Title: Prime Cuts. No, we're not Talking about Steak.
Topic: Taxes and Government Spending
Discussed by Tom Schatz
with Citizens Against Government Waste  (www.cagw.org)

From Washington to Austin all the way down to your county government…How much of your money is wasted? Tom Schatz is the President of Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW). He is here to enlighten us on just how much of our tax dollars are wasted by our government. First, Forty-six cents – forty-six percent – of every dollar is spent on wasteful programs. When you add it all up, that is 2.6 TRILLION DOLLARS.

CAGW was founded in 1984 after the Grace Commission under President Reagan. Since 1993, they have been issuing reports on programs the government can easily cut or reduce the amount of money being funneled into them. Listen in as Tom discusses “peanut subsidies” across the world. Tom asserts, “It’s hard to get rid of it, because nobody really understand what it is!

And here’s a kicker…. The government gives large US companies, who make billions in profits each year, subsidies (i.e. free money) to advertise is foreign countries. Yes, you read that right! Tom explains just how much money these companies receive – money from YOU! (Hint: It’s over $200 MILLION a year.)

CAGW’s alert on this topic can be found [here].

IF YOU’RE FED UP WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS BEING WASTED, CALL 1.800.BE.ANGRY !!

Title: Double Taxation for Seniors
Topic: Taxes and Government Spending
Discussed by Dan Weber
with Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) (www.AMAC.us)

You work hard. You work harder. You save. You save more. Then you retire. Aaaahhh the easy life, right? Nope. Not anymore! It hasn’t been easy on retirees for the last 15-20 years! Most retirees still have to work pert-time somewhere just to make ends meet.

But, why? Why do they have to keep working? They paid all that money into Social Security every year of their working life, just to be forced to pay more when they retire!

Dan Weber, with the Association of Mature American Citizens, says the IRS has been reaching into the pockets of seniors for nearly 20 years, and they keep reaching deeper and deeper. “Right now, a little over 30% of the people pay the extra Social Security tax. Pretty soon, it will be 50%. All because of inflation,” he continues.

The money that seniors are being taxed has already been taxed when they paid into the system! Double Taxation without representation – except by the Association of Mature American Citizens. AARP has done NOTHING to stop this.

The Association of Mature American Citizens is tracking the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act [HR 589] introduced by Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY). Listen in as Den Weber explains what the purpose of the bill is and how it will help seniors everywhere.

If you are a member of AARP and would like to see if the Association of Mature American Citizens is better for you, click [here].

Topic: Taxes and Government Spending

with www.taxfoundation.org

Part 1 of 3

Will your take home pay be 2% less in January? Are you going to pay more to the federal government starting January the 1st?

Topic: Taxes and Government Spending
Discussed by William McBride
with www.taxfoundation.org

Is it a good thing or bad thing that 23 million Americans will be paying the alternative minimum tax starting January 2013? Is it a good thing that every working American who gets a paycheck will have 2% less to spend in January, in February, etc as compared to their last paycheck in December 2012?

William McBride is Chief Economist at the Tax Foundation. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from George Mason University, where his dissertation involved using agent-based modeling and simulation to analyze the effect of various banking regimes, including free banking, on asset prices. While at George Mason, William was a research assistant at the Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science, which was established by Nobel laureate Vernon Smith as a center for research in experimental economics.

William, have we already fallen down the fiscal cliff? If congress does absolutely nothing between now and December 31st, do you see businesses having more cash in their bank accounts to give raises or extend hours, or just the opposite?

One of America’s most established and relied-upon think tanks, the Tax Foundation has since 1937 worked for simple, sensible tax policy at the federal, state, and local levels. They do this by informing Americans about the size of tax burdens and providing economically principled analysis of tax policy issues.

Gina Hollenbeck, the Capitol Correspondent with Texas Insider, explains the pending consequence of a 1.4% Payroll Tax in Texas: 62-71,000 Lost Jobs, a .3% decrease in real wages, and a .4% reduction in disposable income. Too many Republicans have become "Corporate Republicans". Reports show 80% of Texans will see their taxes increased, 10% will have no change, and 10% will have their taxes reduced. And guess who will get the tax break??? The rich and many big corporations, of course! For more info: www.texasinsider.org

Title: Tom Craddick: "They Must be Inept!" - but are they?
Topic: Taxes and Government Spending
Discussed by Billy Hamilton
with Texas Comptroller's Office www.window.state.tx.us

HB 3 was written to reduce the local tax levy on rural property for Public Education. The intent is to reduce this levy from $1.50 per $100 evalutaion to $1.00. This would reduce the levy for public education by 1/3 (33%) but ONLY reduce your total property tax bill by MABYE 18%. HB 3 was to be revenue neutral - i.e.: it was to reduce in one area but raise taxes somewhere else. The Comptroller's Office says the new taxes will not raise enough. What's Up with this - and who's at fault?

Title: Why spend so much on landscaping, streetscapes, pedestrian and bike paths/trails?
Topic: Taxes and Government Spending
Discussed by Tom Schatz
with Citizens Against Government Waste  (www.cagw.org)

The House just approved the $284 Billion Transportaion bill with over 4,000 special 'earmarks' totalling $12 billion in spending on such things as $200 million for a bridge in Alaska to an island with only 50 residents, $3 million to renovate and expand the national Packard Museum, $18.5 million for implementation and quantification of benefits of large-scale landscaping along freeways and interchanges in the Houston area and much more... In Texas, $35.72 million will be spent for landscaping, streetscapes, pedestrian and bike paths/trails. At $25 per month, this money could be spent to pay for health insurance through the CHIPS program for over 119,000 Texas children. Even Republicans have their priorities misplaced. Title: Is this a 'true way' to cap the growth in government spending?
Topic: Taxes and Government Spending
Discussed by State Representative Jimmy "Jim" Jackson
with Elected Officials

Usually there is more than one way to skin a cat... the same with trying to slow, or cap, the growth in government spending. State Representative Jim Jackson, Republican from Carrollton, explains the reasons behind HB 1479. This is an interesting concept: "Limit the growth in spending for any govermental entity in Texas to 5% from one year to the next with respect to dollars received and spent from taxes on real property." But, many wanting 'their idea' to be the one to pass have turned a deaf ear to any other idea. Politics is the art of compromise and the ability to work with others to achieve common goals. By pushing "my way or hit the highway", many times nothing is accomplished. Time is short. Time will tell us what happens... it will be fun to watch!

Director of Government Affairs with the National Taxpayers Union (www.ntu.org), Paul Gessing, explains Eminent Domain. Does the US Constitution say government can take my property? Is government abusing its power? What if GM wants to build a plant and they say they need my land and I do not want to sell? And - METRO can take land as far as 1,500 feet away from its rail line, if it wants to. What can we do to curb this government abuse?
