Title: Paid Sick Leave: Good or Bad?
Topic: Paid Sick Leave
Discussed by Annie Spilman
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

Part 1 of 3

Recently, Annie Spilman was a panelist at a forum sponsored by the Texas Public Policy Foundation. The topic was the “Cost and consequences of mandating paid sick leave for employees working inside the city limits of Austin”. Annie is the Legislative Director of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) – Texas.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is NFIB and who do they represent?

What workers are exempt from Austin’s paid sick leave benefits?

Title: Part 2 of 3 - Paid Sick Leave: Good or Bad?
Topic: Paid Sick Leave
Discussed by Annie Spilman
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Paid sick leave is a great idea…on paper. But is it really a good plan for “every business”?

Under the Federal Medical Leave Act, aren’t workers allowed paid time off?

Is NFIB fighting hard to keep this sort of mandate away from other cities in Texas (and across the nation)?

How is the paid sick leave calculated?

Does the Austin ordinance allow for a city “Czar” to oversee ALL employment records for ALL businesses within the city limits, including small businesses? Listen as Annie explains why this is so extremely dangerous – for everyone.

Title: Part 3 of 3 - Paid Sick Leave: Good or Bad?
Topic: Paid Sick Leave
Discussed by Annie Spilman
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Did the Austin City Council site any studies showing a need for government-mandated paid sick leave for all employees?

Did the Austin City Council site any studies showing either a positive or negative effect on employees who receive government-mandated sick leave?

What are small businesses expressing to NFIB concerning this issue?

Do most employers already provide paid sick leave to their employees? Why the need for a government-mandate then?

Rhetorical Question: Do we just roll over and accept this atrocity or should we fight back?

If you are a small business owner concerned over this issue, please contact NFIB at 512.476.9847 or click here.

Title: Small Business Left Behind
Topic: Small Business Issues
Discussed by Ashley Fingarson
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

When examining the current U.S. tax code, two things are clear: it is unnecessarily complex and it is unfair.

Congress is considering comprehensive tax reform. In other words, they are preparing to reward their friends and punish their enemies.

Small Businesses are about to be ‘left behind’, holding larger tax bills, while big businesses reap tax cuts. Let your voice and concerns be heard. If you own a small business, join the NFIB.

Listen in.

Title: Teach Your Children How to Generate Money - and Have Fun!
Topic: Lemonade Day
Discussed by Molly Young
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

Teach your children how to generate money, participate in Lemonade Day 2013 the First Sunday in May. Michael Dell, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates all operated Lemonade Stands when they were kids.

Help your children pick a location, plan and purchase supplies, keeping track of all their expenses. When the day is over, help then reconcile their books by adding up their sales (money collected) and subtracting all the expenses and show them “how much money they generated”.

Then teach them how to spend some, save some, and share some. Let them decide.

We all can pledge to purchase a glass of lemonade on Lemonade Day.

At a time when big government, big labor, and big business seem cozier than ever before, it will interesting to see whether the Supreme Court decides to reconsider previous precedent of eminent domain. Should ht government be afforded the ability to forcibly transfer property between private parties, particularly small businesses? Isn’t there something in the Constitution about this???

Title: America Needs a New Jobs Council Headed by the NFIB
Topic: Economic Growth
Discussed by Holly Wade
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

The last 4 years have been extremely tough on American families and businesses alike, especially small businesses.

Holly Wade, a Senior Policy Analyst with NFIB, takes a look at what we can expect to see over the next 6 months or so. Most small businesses (80%) did not add new employees in the latter part of 2012. And quite a few small business owners couldn’t fill positions they had open! Now that Obama has disbanded his Jobs Council, which didn’t accomplish much to begin with, what’s the next step?

Topic: Business Issues
Discussed by Cynthia Magnuson

Will this bus tour highlight the fact that small businesses are sitting on the sideline - in effect, causing the continuation of the recession?

What challenges do small business owners have in starting, maintaining and growing their business?

Is health care - finding affordable health insurance - a huge concern for many small business owners?

What about the tax code - is the uncertainty of the federal tax code causing many small business owners to postpone any business expansion plans?

How can our listeners learn more about this bus tour? Will you be holding town hall meetings
along the way, where business owners can express their frustrations and concerns as well as offering solutions?

Title: Is America Creating Jobs and Putting More People Back To Work?
Topic: Job Creation
Discussed by Holly Wade
with National Federation of Independent Business (www.NFIB.org)

How many hundreds of thousands of small businesses belong to NFIB? What kind of questions do you ask them every month? How long has NFIB been doing this? Are these scientific surveys?

Do you believe that your snapshots represents the economy as a whole? Do you know of any huge manufacturing arm that is actually hiring?

Is it still true that upwards of 80% of new jobs in America each month are created by small business firms? Can you define a "small business" for our listeners?

Holly Wade serves as an expert in providing in-depth research and analysis on small business policy issues including health insurance and international trade. In addition, she produces the monthly Small Business Economic Trends survey with NFIB's chief economist and other policy related surveys of small business owners.
