Title: Books or Screens: Which is Better?
Topic: Education
Discussed by Edwin Benson
with Return to Order www.ReturnToOrder.org

Edwin Benson is a retired public-school history teacher and now writes for Return to Order. Today, Edwin discusses new research by Columbia University’s Teachers College that indicates students learn more from books than computer screens.

Click here to read Edwin’s full op-ed on this issue.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What did the Columbia University’s Teachers College study reveal about books vs screens?

How did they conduct their study?

Should observations of fifty-nine students dictate the future of teaching?

Why is Edwin Benson surprised that Columbia University’s Teachers College conducted this study?

Why are many schools switching to eBooks and material on hand-held devices?

Does having material on screens have little advantage if it loses its effectiveness?

Are paper books becoming obsolete?

Should we encourage our kids to read actual real paper books?

Title: The Duty of Parents in Education
Topic: Education
Discussed by David Closson
with Family Research Council (www.FRC.org)

As the nation emerges from a year of political, health, and economic crises, a new battle is heating up: the fight for America’s public schools.

David Closson is the Director of the Center for Biblical Worldview at the Family Research Council. He recently wrote: “Most of our children’s educators are not teaching from a perspective informed by biblical truth. Even those with good intentions will not be able to help our children see how Scripture answers the most fundamental questions we face.”

Click here for more on this serious issue from the FRC and David Closson.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is the responsibility of parents and grandparents when it comes to educating the next generation?

Does it matter if education reflects a secular worldview or a biblical worldview?

Do most parents desire a quality education for their children and grandchildren? From Dr. George Barna: Most people have their worldview formed by the age of 13.

Does the process of building a biblical worldview begin at public school, Sunday school, or in the home?

Does classroom instruction in reading, history, science, literature, and even math shape a child’s worldview?

Title: Part 2 of 2 - The Duty of Parents in Education
Topic: Education
Discussed by David Closson
with Family Research Council (www.FRC.org)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Does this still apply to parents today?

Do parents often delegate the character training of their children to someone or something else – TV, movies, video games, and even the kids’ friends?

What are some ways parents can have a more “hands-on” approach to teaching their children and grandchildren?

Title: Education is Key
Topic: Education
Discussed by Jenn Tarbell
with Four Eight Three Fund (www.483.fund/)

Part 1 of 2

Academic performance by students in the U.S. lags far behind their counterparts in other countries. In fact, one in four students will not graduate high school in the US.

Jenn Tarbell has spent over 10 years working directly for and with Christ-centered microfinance organizations as an employee, executive team member, consultant, and board member. Jenn is the co-founder of 483, an organization that seeks to eradicate poverty and help families thrive across the world. She has also co-authored a book, “$4.83 The Cost to Impact a Child for a Year”.

Today, Jenn discusses the importance of educating our children with Biblical, moral ethics and values.

Click here to change a child’s life forever through Jenn’s 483 mission.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is a fundamental grasp of math, with the ability to read and comprehend, vital to success in life no matter where you live? NOTE: Jenn mentions “microfinance” which she will discuss at length in the next segment…

Is the public school system in America excelling in indoctrinating students in toxic ideas? Jenn discusses why parents are so important to the education of their children and why they should be more involved.

Last year during the raging riots, burning, and looting, a survey was released showing that 40+% of millennials believe looting is acceptable. Are we failing to teach our children the moral value against stealing, burning, looting?

Title: Education: Spend Better and Wiser
Topic: Education
Discussed by Kara Belew
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)

The Big Question: Can the Texas Legislature provide meaningful property tax relief while also improving outcomes for our publicly educated children?

New guest, Kara Belew, is the Senior Education Policy Advisor at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Kara leads TPPF’s efforts to formulate policies to use taxpayer funds more effectively to improve student outcomes across Texas.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What percent of public-school students cannot read on grade level today?

What percent of public-school students cannot do math on grade level today?

Will this affect their lives forever – both professionally and emotionally?

Kara recently discovered evidence that a Texas school board did not discuss its students’ reading and math performance levels for an entire year. Is this a common practice among many school districts across the country? Listen as she elaborates…

What if Steve Jobs and the Board of Directors of Apple never discussed the progress on the iPhone?

Are the reading/math problems restricted to those who cannot speak/read English very well? Is the problem strictly in low-income areas? Or is this a problem which affects every race, sex, age, and social status?

FACT: Only 16% of high school students who take the SAT/ACT are college-ready.

Are there ways to improve student results within existing taxpayer resources?

What is the Texas Supreme Court’s position on this issue?

Title: Kids Can’t Read or Do Math
Topic: Education
Discussed by Dr. Thomas Lindsay
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)

In 1955, prompted by the reading problems experience by the child of a friend, Rudolf Flesch wrote the book “Why Johnny Can't Read”. The book became a huge bestseller and is still in print today. Flesch realized many children were not learning to read because of the method of instruction they were exposed to in school.

Has anything changed over the last 64 years? Dr. Thomas Lindsay responds…

Dr. Lindsay is the Director of TPPF’s Center for Innovation in Education and is a Senior Constitutional Scholar. He has more than two decades experience in education management and instruction, including service as a Dean, Provost, and College President.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Some believe that the “old” method of teaching spelling is harmful to students. Is this true?

What is the ‘look-say’ method? Is it the same as whole word or whole language method of teaching? Are these methods effective?

What is phonics? How is/was phonics taught? Is phonics effective?

Have there been demonstrative studies showing which method is most effective for more students?

Why aren’t elementary school teachers teaching phonics in public schools?

FACT: In Texas, 54% of students cannot read at their grade level.

Does reading to children beginning at an early age really help them learn? Do songs and games help as well? Click here  for more on this issue.

Title: Tax Incentives Needed to Close Workplace Skills Gap
Topic: Education
Discussed by Peter Murphy
with Invest in Education Foundation (www.investineducation.org)

The most recent job numbers from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that there are actually 400,000 more jobs available than the number of unemployed workers. Read that again. Yes – the jobs are there. Where are the workers?

Peter Murphy, Vice President of the Invest in Education Coalition, discusses various options Congress and the Trump Administration should act upon immediately. Click here  to view the report about HR5153.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is there a need for more skilled blue-collar workers?

What is the starting wage for many of these jobs? HINT: It’s more than you think!

If these jobs are not filled, will it hurt the American economy?

Do manufacturers consider the demographics of an area before building their factory to ensure they will have enough workers?

How can the government help fill these jobs with tax incentives for students in community colleges and high school?

What is the mission of the Invest in Education Coalition?

Other organizations like Bridging America’s Gap are helping to spread the word about this issue, as well. You can find them here

Title: Students Left Needing More
Topic: Education
Discussed by Phyllis Schlafly
with Eagle Forum (www.eagleforum.org)

On the last day of 2015, the longest serving member of President Obama’s Cabinet, Arne Duncan, quietly stepped down from his official position. The Washington Post called Arne “the most powerful Education Secretary in U.S. history.” However, the truth is the Federal Government now provides about ten percent of the money spent on public schools. Duncan used that money, to an extent never before, to impose his will on local schools.

Arne Duncan’s departure gives us the perfect opportunity to examine the state of America’s public schools and the government has only made them worse. Phyllis Schlafly is here today to details those failures. First, Common Core is absolutely not helping students perform better – even the teachers hate it!

One of the biggest disappointments in education now is the high number of students who don’t even know how to read. FACT: Did you know that Phyllis Schlafly has written several books on how to teach young students how to read? You can find First Reader here. You can find Turbo Reader here

Phyllis also discusses the endorsement of Hillary Clinton by two national teacher organizations. Hillary has promised to shut down under-performing schools, but how can she if the teachers support her? Phyllis says, “If she closes under-performing schools, she’d be closing most of the schools!” Isn’t that the truth?

Phyllis closes the interview by urging parents – and all voters – to be vigilant when it comes to voting for candidates, especially President. Know who they are and what they stand for. “The big fight is within in the Republican Party,” she says. And above all – go to your precinct convention on election night, get elected to your Senatorial convention, state convention, and national convention. Use your voice for good!

Title: When to Opt Your Kid Out of School Activities
Topic: Education
Discussed by Eric Buehrer
with Gateways to Better Education www.GoGateways.org

Part 1 of 2

The new school year is in full-swing. I’m sure your younger child has come home with a folder full of information about upcoming events and activities to participate in. If your children are older, in junior or high school, you might have received an email from the administration office. It’s nearly impossible to read all the information and decipher what is acceptable and what is not.

Many parents are not sure how to respond when they are confronted with something at their child’s school that they don’t necessarily agree with. Some are fearful their child might be bullied or looked down upon if they complain. Some don’t want to be viewed as “that parent”. Some parents don’t even realize they have the right to say no!

Eric Buehrer encourages parents to stand up for their beliefs and let their voice be heard. First, he says to pick your battles: Is it really that bad? Ask others to evaluate the situation with you. Oftentimes an outsider will help the situation seem clearer. Also, make sure your facts are correct. Sometimes your kid says one thing, but it is really something altogether different.

Listen to the next segment with Eric as he shares some more tips for parents.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - When to Opt Your Kid Out of School Activities
Topic: Education
Discussed by Eric Buehrer
with Gateways to Better Education www.GoGateways.org

When questioning something taught at your child’s school, Eric tells parents to pay close attention to the teacher. Is he/she showing a bias toward what information is being taught? Is the teacher being fair or sharing too much of their own opinion?

Sometimes children should be completely opted out of the activity and other times it is a great opportunity for parents to teach their children a lesson in discernment. Openly discuss the information being taught with your child and encourage him/her to give their opinion and ask questions.

Inquire how long the subject or activity will be taught. The longer the subject is taught, the stronger the effect will be on your child. The worst thing you can do is let your child receive one-sided information from a teacher who may not have the same morals and values you do.

Title: Character Education
Topic: Education
Discussed by State Rep. Dwayne Bohac
with State Rep. Dwayne Bohac (www.Bohac.com)

Albert Einstein once said: “Most people say that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: It is character.” State Representative Dwayne Bohac says too many kids are simply not up to par when they graduate because they have not been taught “character traits”. He points out, “It’s not about the money; it’s about the character.”

The infusion of traits like self-discipline, persistence, gratitude, optimism, hope, kindness, honesty, and courage are what children need to be taught. We can’t always rely on their parents or whoever is raising them to instill these traits in kids.

Dwayne believes all of these character development traits must be coupled with academic lessons – math, reading, writing, history, science – everything. Listen in as Representative Bohac explains that he is not getting this idea from theologians; these are behavioral scientists – some who may be atheists! “It does not cost a great deal of money, but it does require effort, especially from parents.”

Parents must become more involved in their children’s school work and activities; they are, after all, our future. If children aren’t productive during their school years, it is likely that they won’t be productive or successful in life. Dwayne cites a study from Oregon State University that found some shocking results when students were taught character traits along with their academic lessons. Listen in for the results and to hear more about the bill Dwayne is going to file soon concerning this matter.

Title: State with Hard Education Choices
Topic: Education
Discussed by Todd Ziebarth
with National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (www.PublicCharters.org)

Our current public education system is just broken. When 50% of students in Texas never finish high school, something is wrong. Texas has one of the best economies in the world, but we can’t even keep our kids in high school long enough to get a diploma. If we can’t even graduate students who can read and do simple math equations, our economy won’t be that great for much longer.

Todd Ziebarth is an expert in school choice, advocating for more charter schools and helping to enact laws in numerous states on the issue. He says many school districts are resistant to the idea of school choice because they don’t want to lose control of the students. It’s their ego. Their pride. It’s about job security. It’s about money.

There are eight states that do not allow charter schools at all. Of the forty-two states remaining, many charter schools are in danger of failing miserably. Texas ranks about the middle of the herd right now. Texas only allows two types of charter schools. Listen in as Todd explains those choices.

Title: Leave Your Rights at the Door
Topic: Education
Discussed by Eric Buehrer
with Gateways to Better Education www.GoGateways.org

Part 1 of 2

As a former public school teacher and now a licensed minister and founder/president of Gateways to Better Education, Eric Buehrer can relate to both sides of the religion-in-schools debate. He says there are seven basic freedoms that students and teachers have in public schools. These freedoms come directly from the Department of Education – not from a religious group or organization.

First, students and teachers are allowed to pray, read their Bibles or other religion material, and talk about their faith in public. They can organize a Christian club or other religious group and even announce their meeting times via the PA system, fliers, and bulletin board postings. Teachers cannot deny students the right to talk about their faith or Jesus or God within class assignments, homework, or even oral debates.

So why do we keep hearing stories about students being persecuted in school? Eric says that although most of these laws have been around for over twenty years, most principals, teachers, and administrative staff are completely clueless as to what the law actual says.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - Leave Your Rights at the Door
Topic: Education
Discussed by Eric Buehrer
with Gateways to Better Education www.GoGateways.org

Eric Buehrer continues to talk about the seven freedoms that students have in public schools. This was not something Gateways to Better Education just pulled out of thin air. This is not something the religious right has concocted. These seven freedoms are given directly from the government and have been in effect since 1995. Most teachers have never seen them. Most principals would deny they even exist. Make sure you print out the FREE legal guidelines found at www.GoGateways.org

Teachers are also have rights while at work. Listen in as Eric explains that teachers have the right to talk about their faith at lunch or the break room. Teachers can form a bible study with other teachers. Teachers are also encouraged to oversee student-led Bible and religious clubs. Don’t be shy about your faith!

Eric also discusses whether or not students can attend outside religious meetings during instructional time. Forty states have laws regarding this matter. What about Texas? Listen in as Eric explains!

And what about sporting events or even graduation? If a student is chosen to give a speech, they are allowed to pray and talk about Jesus, God, and their faith. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Title: Our Schools are Failing Our Students
Topic: Education
Discussed by Dr. Vince Bertram
with Project Lead The Way (www.PLTW.org)

Part 1 of 2

Dr. Vince Bertram is the author of a great new book, One Nation Under-Taught, which debut on the New York Best Seller at #7! Dr. Bertram was a school principal for a number of years in Indiana and was also a school superintendent. He has been in the public education system for a long time and has seen the ins and outs, the ups and downs – the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Today, Dr. Bertram discusses the failing school system in America. He says, “The problems we are facing in the American public education system can no longer be denied.” He also believes that many of the problems can be blamed on global focus groups who attempt a “one size fits all” method of teaching.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - Our Schools are Failing Our Students
Topic: Education
Discussed by Dr. Vince Bertram
with Project Lead The Way (www.PLTW.org)

We have known for several years now that American students are falling behind other countries in the areas of math, science, and technology. We can now add engineering to this list. What is wrong? Why can’t our students keep up? This is not just a problem with lower income or poverty stricken school districts; it is a growing problem in middle to upper-middle class districts, as well.

Dr. Vince Bertram reviews some startling statistics concerning these subject areas. He says, “They are impaling our economy and creating major barriers for our students to be able to compete for jobs.” With the advancement of technology in today’s society, we need all the math, science, technology, and engineering kids we can get! Encourage your children or grandchildren to not only read every chance they can, but to also up their game in science and math.

Listen in as Dr. Bertram discusses what other countries are doing to advance their students compared to the United States. The answer may surprise you! Log on www.PLTW.org  for more on this serious issue.

Title: Failing Schools in Texas
Topic: Education
Discussed by Lance Izumi
with Pacific Research Institute (www.PacificResearch.org)

Pacific Research Institute recently did a study of the Texas public education system and the results will probably shock you! Lance Izumi, the Senior Director of Education Studies, says that many parents in middle to upper-middle class neighborhoods think their schools are just fine, when the opposite is most likely true.

In Texas, for example, PRI discovered that 60%, or 673 non-low-income schools, had half or more of their students in at least one grade level fail to reach the “recommended” level of satisfactory academic performance on a 2013 STAAR exam. In addition to this, schools have been “deflating” grade bench mark results so that it appears more students are passing each subject, when in reality less than half of the students are actually passing! How do the school district get away with this? Listen in as Lance explains the sad reality.

One way to determine if your child needs help is to sit down and read an age-appropriate book with them. If they cannot read the book without assistance, then something is wrong – not necessarily with your child, but with the system.

There is nothing wrong with being an involved parent – make monthly parent/teacher meetings, volunteer once a week in the class, help your child with their homework. Don’t just simply trust the “results”. After all, they are government-run tests and we all know how well that usually turns out.

Finally, what about school choice? Should parents be given more choice on where to send their child to school? Lance Izumi says that when Sweden began offering nation-wide school choice, the school systems improved dramatically because the principals now had to fight for their students. Should Texas and America begin universal school choice to improve competition, grades, and test scores?

Title: Does Your Child Really Know How to Read?
Topic: Education

Something is wrong when a high school English teacher at an award-winning public school shockingly reveals that her 11th grade students can’t read. This is not an isolated case in one school in a far-off land.

Phyllis Schlafly blames the professors who are teaching a “progressive” way of reading to the young college kids who want to be teachers. Listen in as Terry and Phyllis discuss the problem that started decades ago.

What about math and science? How do American students fair against students from around the world? With common core, students are encouraged to draw pictures. Pictures! For math! What’s up with that?

Title: Class Sizes are Exploding
Topic: Education
Discussed by Stacy Washington
with Project 21 (www.NationalCenter.org)

Part 1 of 2

America is great. We have the most freedom of any nation in the world. We have great trading policies. We have great health care opportunities. Or we did once upon a time. We have free public education for anyone who wants it – including illegal immigrants.

Wait a minute! Aren’t illegal immigrants, even children, supposed to be sent back to their home country? We all know by now that this is not the case. Over 90,000 unaccompanied children have entered the United States this year. This number does NOT include the number of illegal immigrant children who have crossed the border with a parent or other adult.

Stacy Washington is a former school board member and is part of the National Center for Public Policy Research’s division of Project 21. She says that there is not another nation in the world which allows illegal immigrants to attend school for free. In fact, their parents are sent to prison and the children are deported! She also points out that the deportation process is much, much faster in other countries, as well.

Many of these illegal immigrant children coming to America from south of the border do not speak Spanish, but some other language that is considered dead in the modern era. Teachers must be hired to translate for these children, new curriculum must be purchased, schedules rearranged. School districts are not prepared for this increased cost.

Furthermore, unlike American-born children who are required to have up-to-date shot records or a doctor’s note exempting them from immunizations, these illegal immigrant children are COMPLETELY EXEMPT. They are bringing diseases – some deadly – to our schools, infecting hundreds, if not thousands, of our children.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - Class Sizes are Exploding
Topic: Education
Discussed by Stacy Washington
with Project 21 (www.NationalCenter.org)

Teacher associations and unions all advocate for smaller classrooms. Schools are already overcrowded. Funding is already limited.

Stacy Washington says that the influx of illegal immigrant children that are flooding our nation’s public school system will have astronomical effects on every student in the classroom. When you think about it, our children only receive four (4) hours of instructional time during the school day. Time is spent traveling from class to class and doing extra-curricular activities such as PE, music, and art. Younger students have recess. All students obviously need to eat lunch.

When you add several illegal immigrant children who to don’t speak English to these already overcrowded classrooms, the instructional time dwindles down even further because teachers must help the non-English speaking students more often.

If 90,000 illegal immigrant children enter the public school system in America this year, and each student costs an average of $9,000, that will add an additional $810 Million to our already over-extended budgets. Teaching students English as a second language adds even more to the cost.

Title: A bad reaction to a bad problem.
Topic: Education
Discussed by Bishop Council Nedd
with Project 21 (www.NationalCenter.org)

As an experienced teacher, Bishop Council Nedd has seen the devastating effects an influx of children can have on a school. Already underfunded and overcrowded classrooms are not prepared for the massive amounts of children coming over the border.

Bishop Council Nedd explains how the rush of illegal children coming to American schools not only puts a financial hardship on school districts, but also places an academic strain on individual classrooms and teachers. Schools are not prepared with qualified teachers to teach English as a Second Language to these children, many of whom speak a language other than Spanish. Children who speak English should not have to suffer academically because one or two students in the classroom do not understand the lessons.

You can learn more about this and other issues with Project 21 at www.NationalCenter.org.

Title: Money Will Not Solve the Education Malaise in America
Topic: Education
Discussed by Dr. Paul Peterson
with Dr. Paul Peterson (www.PaulEPeterson.org)

Money is not the cure-all. Removing bad or ineffective teachers is not the cure-all.

In my honest opinion, liberal-democrat-progressives brought in new-spelling and new reading techniques and most students are far behind in reading skills. These same “experts” broke the teaching methods for math and science and now they want us to trust them with Common Core.

Common Core cannot continue. Period. Bring back the basics. Give the kids ample recess time. Teach them how to climb a rope and jump a hurdle, instead of tossing a plastic ball back and forth so they “don’t hurt someone”. Teach them the fundamentals of music. Every day. And let them paint and get messy for crying out loud! Kids need to be creative. They yearn for originality. Teachers want their kids to have fun learning! Stop all the testing and just teach!

Title: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Topic: Education
Discussed by James Golsan
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)

Part 1 of 3

The problem isn’t how much money is spent on education in Texas. The problem is how it is being spent.

James Golsan says that one area where money is being mismanaged is administration. In addition, $11,000 is being spent on EACH student in public school in Texas. Is this really necessary?

One possible solution is school choice.

Listen in as James explains.

James is an Education Policy Analyst with Texas Public Policy Foundation. In this segment, James discusses the drop-out rate in Texas vs the attrition rate.

Texas Courts are complaining that we are not spending enough on education. If you ask me, we’re spending too much! But where do we begin cutting costs?

Part 1 of 2

President Lyndon Johnson’s “Head Start” educational program has been a dud since the beginning. Now, $180 BILLION later, some people are seeing the light. President Obama even said, “It’s not whether an idea is liberal or conservative, but whether it works.” Well, Mr. President, it’s not working, so what do we do now?

Many services are offered thru the Head Start program, but it is geared mainly toward preparing pre-kindergartens across the nation for school, teaching everything from ABC’s to nutrition. However, the US Department of Health and Human Services own report shows little to no impact on cognitive, social and emotional stabilization, and parent participation - which are all vital in the education of children. Is the program actually harming children?

Donna Garner has over 30 years of experience in education.

She has seen it all - traditional education, progressive education, and what some are now calling subjective education. CSCOPE snuck in under the radar at nearly all schools in Texas so most parents don’t even know what it is! According to Donna, all parents should investigate if their child’s school has implemented CSCOPE.

There are 2 types of education: 1) Traditional Education - phonics, classical literature, geography, history, and fact-based math. 2) Project-Based Education - children give their “opinion” on subjects and no answer is really wrong, environmental extremism, politically correct.

The second type is the basis of CSCOPE. What’s even scarier is who the founder is and who she has ties with….

Segment 1 of 2

Who has the primary responsibility for making critical decisions about the education of school-aged children: their parents or the government? That is a fundamental question about education policy that faces the United States as it attempts to build educational institutions for the twenty-first century. Some believe that professional educators, government officials, and the public education system as a whole are best positioned to make educational decisions for children. But how are students performing today as compared to 30 or 40 years ago? More information can be found at www.FRC.org
