Title: State with Hard Education Choices
Topic: Education
Discussed by Todd Ziebarth
with National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (www.PublicCharters.org)

Our current public education system is just broken. When 50% of students in Texas never finish high school, something is wrong. Texas has one of the best economies in the world, but we can’t even keep our kids in high school long enough to get a diploma. If we can’t even graduate students who can read and do simple math equations, our economy won’t be that great for much longer.

Todd Ziebarth is an expert in school choice, advocating for more charter schools and helping to enact laws in numerous states on the issue. He says many school districts are resistant to the idea of school choice because they don’t want to lose control of the students. It’s their ego. Their pride. It’s about job security. It’s about money.

There are eight states that do not allow charter schools at all. Of the forty-two states remaining, many charter schools are in danger of failing miserably. Texas ranks about the middle of the herd right now. Texas only allows two types of charter schools. Listen in as Todd explains those choices.
