Title: Universal Basic Income: Good or Bad for Texans?
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by James Quintero
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)
Alexander Fraser Tytler: “A democracy … can only exist until
the majority discovers it can vote itself money out of the public treasury.
After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most
benefits.” (Click
here for the full quote.)
Today, James Quintero explains what happens when a Democracy falls into this trap, specifically by the implementation of Universal Basic Income. James is the Policy Director for the
Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Government for the People Campaign.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
How do we compete against Santa Clause?
What is meant by “Universal Basic Income” (UBI)? James Quintero explains the danger of UBI’s and why there should be serious consequences if local officials ignore/break Texas law. His suggestion: “Hit the bad actors in the pocketbook.”

Title: The US Needs a Responsible Budget
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by Dr. Vance Ginn
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)
Part 1 of 3
The Federal Government has borrowed more than 30 trillion dollars – not to mention the state and local government, public education, and hospital and water district debt that tax payers owe.
The list is almost endless.
Dr. Vance Ginn is the Chief Economist at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Dr. Ginn previously served as the Associate Director for Economic Policy of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) at the
Executive Office of the President during the Trump Administration.
He recently wrote: “If we can have less spending, taxing, and regulating, we can compete and return to the real prosperity earned in 2019 rather than the increased dependency on government today. Otherwise, America can’t compete.”
Click
here to read more on this topic from Dr. Ginn.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
How did we arrive at this perilous junction? Dr. Ginn explains that it is definitely NOT a revenue problem; it’s strictly a spending problem. And both parties are to blame.
We have been here before. What course of action was taken by bold leaders?
Can we tax our way out of this hole? Short answer: NO.
When a family is on a budget, they cut out extras like eating out and extra-curricular activities like movies. Should the Federal Government start cutting out the extras?

What is the Penny Plan? Would it work for the Federal Government? Dr. Ginn

Title: The Economic Decline of Houston
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by James Quintero
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)
Part 1 of 2
Moody’s Investor
Services, one of the nation’s top three credit rating agencies, recently awarded
Houston a negative rating due to increased government spending, rising debt
payments, and mounting pension costs.
James
Quintero is the director of the Center for Local Governance at the
Texas Public Policy Foundation. James says, “Moody’s report is a clear
indication that the City of Houston needs long-term structural spending and debt
reforms so as not to become the Detroit-of-the-South.”
James also explains what went wrong in Detroit, specifically with pension plans.
Houston is not as bad as Detroit – yet – but it could happen far sooner than
many believe if policies don’t change. If the private sector operated its
pension plan like the government does, someone would go to jail. Period. What
they are doing is illegal and they should be held liable for their illegal
activities.
FACT: The difference between the three unfunded liability
pension plans and the money that is actually on hand has grown to $3.2 Billion
in Houston. James gives more details about each separate entity within those
three plans.
This problem isn’t central to only Houston, either; this is a statewide issue.
Listen in as James Quintero gives some suggestions about how to get a handle on
the situation, starting with the State Legislature.

FACT: Think the amount of debt

$57.5 Billion. That is just unacceptable.
Where do we go from here? We must take control of the situation before it gets

Title: Will Houston become the Detroit of the South?
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by Dr. Lawrence McQuillan
with Independent Institute (www.Independent.org)
Elected officials have routinely
promised government employees fat pension plans but have not fully funded these
obligations. Now, there aren’t enough workers paying into the system to cover
the obligations to a tune of approximately $4.7 Trillion deficit across the
country. Texas owes $300 Billion of that and Houston has $14 Billion in
obligations.
Dr. Lawrence McQuillan is a Senior Fellow
and Director of the Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation at the Independent
Institute. He is here today to help us better understand the dire circumstances
our elected officials have placed us in.
If business owners handled their employee pensions the way the local and state
governments do, someone would go to prison! “The laws that govern private sector
pensions are very strict. If the same shenanigans happened in the private
sector, people would go to jail!” Dr. McQuillan laments.
He goes on to discuss the deficit in Houston and what the future may look like.
Will Houston become the next Detroit?

Half of the president’s new $56

with annual income greater than $200,000. The proposal includes additional
funding for projects like the Promise Zone Initiative to revitalize high-poverty
communities, as President Obama intends to create 40 new Promise Zones on top of
the 15 already in the works.
If that doesn’t make your head spin, President Obama wants those making over

Being a government-run enterprise is both a blessing and a curse. Sure, there are a lot of advantages inherent in being a government-run enterprise, but also a lot of strings that come attached as well. The Postal Service is not only a rare privileged monopoly; it is an even rarer money-losing monopoly because of politically imposed inefficiencies. Nicki Kurokawa analyzes the Post Office.
Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution states that one of the specific powers of Congress is "To establish Post Offices and Post Roads." Unfortunately, if
Congress can't successfully do the things it's actually empowered to do, how can

Title: HEY GOVERNMENT - HOME ECONOMICS COUPONS ARE COOL AGAIN! Part 1 of 2
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by Pete Sepp
with National Taxpayers Union (www.ntu.org)
If government spending were reduced to its 2007 level, America would have a balanced budget - including a $163 billion surplus. This conclusion was discovered by a non-politician, George LeMieux, who was appointed to a vacant US Senate seat in Florida. So, why can’t our elected politicians figure this out?!?! Log on to www.NTU.org for more on this and other financial issues.

Title: WILL TEXANS HAVE TO PAY MORE FOR OUR DRIVER’S LICENSES, TAGS, AND GAS?
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by Justin Keener
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)
The Texas government has enough money. But they, like everyone else these days, are getting greedy. A bill has been introduced that would raise the gas tax by 10 cents, impose a $1.00 per hour parking fee in certain areas, charge a $15 emission fee, charge $250 to register your car if you move to another county, and double - yes DOUBLE - the cost of your driver’s license. Tell your Representative and Senator NO! Guest Justin Keener is with the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Log on to www.texaspolicy.com for more information or to find your elected officials.

Title: Where must we draw the line? Part Two
Topic: Government Spending
Discussed by Pete Sepp
with National Taxpayers Union (www.ntu.org)
When will we, the American Taxpayer, run out of money? Why must the American Taxpayer pay for every disaster? When will this madness stop? Currently, the US Government has a 9 trillion dollar debt, about $30,000 owed by every man, woman and child in America. This will have to be paid back someday. You prioritize your spending, don’t you? At some point, you just stop spending, or you go bankrupt. Why must we pay for every disaster? This madness has to stop!
