Title: What if Jesus isn’t the Reason for the Season?
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by Dr. McKay Caston
with Dr. McKay Caston (www.mckaycaston.com/)

Part 1 of 3

We all have seen the banner that reads: “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” But, is Jesus the reason for season?

Dr. McKay Caston teaches theology and homiletics, leads the Doctor Ministering Program in Gospel Renewal and Pastoral Leadership, and serves as Director of the church planting residency for Metro Atlanta Seminary. Today, he discusses the “real reason for the season”.

Click here to read Dr. Caston’s article on this topic.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Applying Biblical theology, is Jesus the reason for the season?

If not for sinners in need of rescue, would Jesus have been born? (Mattew 1:21; 1 Timothy 1:15; 1 John 4:10)

O Come, All Ye Faithful” is one of the most celebrated hymns during this season. But is anyone truly faithful? Is anyone truly worthy? (Romans 3:10)

How should we approach the manger of the Christ child?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is our need for grace the reason for the season?

Is Jesus the unrivaled focus for the season?

Are our eyes to be fixed on Jesus this Advent season? Dr. Caston says: “When we have that Jesus-centric perspective on Christmas, it really enables us to have a holiday that is not nearly as commercialized, but is very much a devotional leverage for the human heart to know, to worship, and to treasure the Jesus who actually treasures us.”

JOY (Pastor Jarrett)
What brings you joy, especially at Christmastime?
Do you rejoice in the birth of Jesus? (Luke 2:10); Matthew 2:10)

In 2 Kings, who were the “servants of the Lord”? Who did they follow?

Why do we have a negative idea of slavery today?

How cool is it to be a servant of the Lord? Mark explains why we, as Christians, should not have a negative idea about being slaves to the Lord.

How can we be slaves, yet be strong at the same time?

As children of God, do we have anything to fear?

Day 5

Life is full of ups and downs. Life is full of contrasts. God does incredible things. He is always reliable, but not predictable. This week, Mark offers a “buffet” of sorts from Luke’s account of the events leading up to the birth of Jesus.

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

Scripture Reference: Luke 1:24-37

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

BUFFET ITEM #4: GOD IS NOT PREDICTABLE – BUT THAT’S OKAY!
(Luke 1:34-37)
What was Mary’s response to the angel’s proclamation?
Why did the angel tell Mary about her relative Elizabeth’s pregnancy?
Is anything impossible for God? Nope! Mark says: “God’s not deliberately throwing you curveballs. But He has always done the unanticipated.” He then reminds us of Josephe’s life, mana from heaven, and the disciples, which only could have been orchestrated by the Creator. He also reminisces about an old Amy Grant song: “How Can We See That Far

POINTS TO PONDER:

Give God the time.
You are loved.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

BUFFET ITEM #2: CATCH THE CONTRAST
(Luke 1:26-29)
How did the angel greet Mary? Was this a normal greeting? Or special?
Why did the angel call Mary the “favored one”?
Why was Joseph more than likely much older than Mary? Was this the norm back then?
Have you ever been confused by your life circumstances? Me, too! Mark reminds us to listen to the voice of God. He will guide us!

Scripture Reference
: Zephaniah 3:14-15; Zechariah 9:9; Joel 2:21

BUFFET ITEM #3: CATCH THE CRESCENDO
(Luke 30-33)
Did you know that God does incredible things? It’s true! Every day He does amazing things!
What else did the angel tell Mary? Mark explains why Luke relayed the angel’s message in such a specific way…
Does God still work in our lives today? Absolutely!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

BUFFET ITEM #2: CATCH THE CONTRAST (Luke 1:26-29)

Why does Mark believe that this story by Luke is for everyone? Mark says: “In spite of every card that has been dealt to you in this life, right now at this moment you are loved by the most awesome being that is beyond your ability to even understand. He knows your name. He knows exactly what you’ve done. He knows exactly where you are. And He loves you.” Bottom Line: God cares for you!

Why was Mary so confused (greatly troubled) by the angel’s proclamation? Would YOU be confused, too?

Mark takes a few minutes to explain why people were betrothed so young back then and when this all changed…

BUFFET ITEM #2: CATCH THE CONTRAST (Luke 1:26-29)

Title: One Perfect Life
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by John MacArthur
with John MacArthur (www.gty.org/christmas)

His was the most significant, most important, and only perfect life ever. And it all began in a humble stable, in a small village called Bethlehem. As thoughts turn this month to the incarnation of the Son of God, John MacArthur helps focus your worship with a two-part Christmas special that blends what the four gospels say about Jesus and His perfect life.

The first part, “A Son Is Given”, takes you to the events leading up to Bethlehem—angels announcing the births of John the Baptist and Jesus, Mary proclaiming her worship of Christ, Zechariah offering a benediction for the coming King, and the shepherds coming to Bethlehem to worship the Messiah.

Part two, “Immanuel, God with Us”, follows the gospel narratives from after Jesus’ birth to His last hours on the cross.

Title: It’s OK to Say “Merry Christmas”!
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by Mary Elizabeth Castle
with Texas Values (TxValues.org)

Every year governments try to ban references to Christmas in public schools and on public property. Many stories and questions regarding such restrictions reach the desk of Texas Values team members during the Christmas season.

Mary Elizbeth Castle is a Policy Advisor for Texas Values. Today she discusses their “Merry Christmas Project”.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Can students be banned from passing out candy cane pens with a Christmas message?br />

White Christmas”, composed by Irving Berlin, and sung so memorably by Bing Crosby in the movie by the same name, is familiar to many. It’s definitely a song for the season, but for more reasons than you may realize.

Carter Conlon, with Times Square Church, will take you deeper into its meaning as he digs into the Word of God in “White Christmas: A Closer Look”.

You can scour the New Testament from Matthew chapter 1 to Revelation chapter 22, and you will find no indication whatsoever of the date that Jesus was born.

When did the church begin celebrating the birth of Christ?

When did the church decide December 25th was an appropriate day?

What about Santa Claus?

Mark Lanier covers these issues and more.

Title: No Room in the Inn
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by Carter Conlon
with Times Square Church New York (www.tscnyc.org/)

Opening with a dramatic reading of Luke 2:1-14, this special program presents the challenge of the Bethlehem story when an innkeeper decided there was “no room in the inn.”
There was a knock at the door, a plea for a place to birth a child. But someone would have to give up a bed and the cries of a newborn might disturb sleep. Suddenly it just became easier to say, “We’re sorry, there’s no room.

This Christmas message from Carter Conlon, including a stirring testimony of a young woman who did find room in the inn, reminds the people of God to respond when a “knock” comes. Will it be a phone call to answer, a meal to provide, a guest invited to celebrate the season? Are we ready to answer the knock and make room in the inn?

Why did the angels specifically mention that they would find a baby, not a king? Pastor Fleming shares a funny story about a five year old in a Christmas play who saw baby “Jesus” for the first time!

Title: A Son is Given
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by John MacArthur
with John MacArthur (www.gty.org/christmas)

Part 1 of 2

His was the most significant, most important, and only perfect life ever. And it all began in a humble stable, in a small village called Bethlehem. Of course, the Christmas season honors the incarnation of the Son of God. And for this Christmas, John MacArthur has narrated a two-part audio special that blends what the four gospels say about the birth of Jesus – the beginning of that one perfect life.

The first part, A Son Is Given, takes you to the events leading up to Bethlehem, when the angels announce the births of John the Baptist and Jesus, Mary proclaims her worship of Christ, Zechariah offers a benediction for the coming King, and the shepherds come to Bethlehem to worship the Messiah.

Part two, titled Immanuel, God with Us, follows the gospel narratives from after Jesus’ birth to His last hours on the cross.

As you enjoy the holiday season, listen to this two-part series with your loved ones, and remember that Christmas is a time to honor the birth of Christ, the beginning of the only perfect life the world’s ever known.

Title: When Your Kid is the Grinch
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by Dr. Daniel Huerta
with Focus on the Family www.Family.org

“I want! I want! I want! I want!” Is this all you are hearing right now from your kids?

Danny Huerta offers some great advice for curbing your child’s Grinch-like attitude, focusing on serving others this Christmas season in a way every child can relate to and understand.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Too many people – of all ages – are too focused on “things” at Christmastime (and all the time). How can we stop this materialistic attitude?

What can parents do for their children to teach thankfulness?

Should parents set a budget for Christmas presents and stick to it?

How does serving others teach our children (and us) to be more thankful?

For more tips, click here.

Title: Recap of the Christmas Season
Topic: Christmas
Discussed by Meeke Addison
with Urban Family Talk (www.urbanfamilytalk.com)

Meeke Addison is the Director of Communications for Urban Family Talk, a ministry division of the American Family Association. She is also the co-host of “Airing the Addisons” with her husband Wil. She is here today to give us a recap of the Christmas season. Many people who celebrate Christmas and sing of Christ’s birth really have no idea what it really means to be a Christian. Meeke says, “We have perfected the commercialization of our Savior. We have been able to detach ourselves from his mission and get googly-eyed.

Even as a baby in the manger, Jesus was crying out to his Father in Heaven: “Just one more for You!” As Christians, we must continue to remind the unsaved of the real purpose of Jesus Christ’s mission on earth. It wasn’t to perform miracles. It wasn’t to boast about being a perfect man. It wasn’t about the disciples and the work they did in his name. Jesus came as a sacrificial lamb to one day die on a cross for our sins.

Meeke believes that we are all put on this earth for a purpose – we all have a specific mission to complete. “Every breath is yours on loan from God. There is nothing you have done to deserve or secure it,” she says. We are truly blessed beyond merit.
