Why are “witnesses” important in the Kingdom of God? Will God always help and guide us as we witness to others?

What is the purpose of God’s Word? Is it “just a book of stories”? Why should we dive into the Word every day? What if we don’t understand what we read?

Why does God desire a relationship with us? Pastor Brent reminds us of the Parables of the Lost Coin, the Lost Sheep, and the Prodigal Son. (Luke 15)

Why are relationships important? (Genesis 20; Luke 10:25-27; Matthew 5:23-24)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How has God reversed the world? Yesterday, Pastor Brent shared how Abraham and Moses demonstrated the love and person of Jesus without ever even meeting him! Today he discusses the importance of judges, priests, and prophets. He also reminds us that earthly, human kings were not in God’s original plan; kings were man’s idea! It’s all about God’s will and man’s free will.

Jesus had a “small group”. Why did Jesus believe having a small group of friends was important?

Will the Gospel continue if we do nothing? Pastor Brent says: “Yes, but….” (Luke 4:43; Acts 1:8)

Why are “witnesses” important in the Kingdom of God?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why did Mark choose to teach on “Snapshots of Jesus”? Why is it important to learn more about lessons from the Bible that we have heard since grade school (or even earlier!)?

Why are our actions important as Christians? Furthermore, why is it important to take action? Pastor Brent shares a short clip from a past lesson from Mark on focusing our praise from Luke 11:28. Click here and fast-forward to the 22-minute mark.

REVIEW:

Why should we read the Bible with our ears open, as well as our mind and our heart?
It’s easy to get distracted with the things of this world – even at church! How can we stay focused?
God designed the world. Is it how He imagined it would be?

How has God reversed the world? Pastor Brent shares how Abraham and Moses demonstrated the love and person of Jesus without ever even meeting him!

Title: What is Your Worldview
Topic: Snapshots of Jesus
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

WORLDVIEW: An understanding of the world that informs one’s fundamental beliefs and assumptions, which build a framework of ideas and attitudes about the world and how it works.

This week, CFBC Pastor Brent Johnson subs in for Mark Lanier, continuing in the Snapshots of Jesus series with his lesson on “What is Your Worldview”, focusing on Theism.

He looks at three areas:
Evangelism and our entrance into Heaven
The Kingdom of God
Communing with God

To view Brent Johnson’s video for this lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

COMMUNING WITH GOD:

What are some ways we commune with God?

Why should we be careful about what we pray for?

Why don’t we pray more for spiritual matters?

What did Jesus say about the importance of prayer? Pastor Brent shares a parable from Luke 18:1-8 “The Parable of the Persistent Widow”.

Should we be persistent in prayer? Or do we just need to pray for something one time? Pastor Brent has an interesting answer to this question.

Was Jesus persistent in prayer? Pastor Brent reminds us of Jesus praying in the garden (Matthew 26).

Did Paul ever pray persistently? Pastor Brent uses Paul’s thorn in the flesh as an example (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

Final Thoughts: “We need to be people that are letting the Spirit moves us so they will see what God is doing and they want to be a part of it.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

ENTRANCE TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD:

How do we gain entrance into the Kingdom of God? Pastor Brent read from Luke 4:42-44 yesterday.
Why did Jesus heal people? Was this his primary purpose?
What is our purpose as Christians? Would you be able to list out 5 good things about the Kingdom of God in less than a minute?
What are some requirements to enter the Kingdom of God? (Mark 1:14-15)
How did Jesus share the Gospel? (John 3:8)
If a stranger focused on your life, what effects of God living in you would be easily recognized?

COMMUNING WITH GOD:

What are some ways we commune with God?
Are we all at different points of this journey? Is one path “better” than another?
Why should we be careful about what we pray for? Pastor Brent uses the illustration of a vending machine. When what we wanted gets stuck or we get something else instead, we get upset or disappointed. Why? God always knows what is best!
Why don’t we pray more for spiritual matters? Pastor Brent shares some statistics.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD:
The Kingdom of God began the moment He created the world. But why did He have to reintroduce the Kingdom of God to the world? Pastor Brent reminds us of Abraham.

Why did God reveal His laws to Moses? Pastor Brent reminds us that the Mediterranean is the middle of the world and this is where the Promised Land is! How cool is that?

How did Jesus MODEL the Kingdom of God? Pastor Brent reminds us that Jesus was not afraid of causing a ruckus – and we should do the same!

How did Jesus DEFINE the Kingdom of God? (Luke 17:20-21)

What does “Ecclesia” mean? Did Jesus ever talk about this? Is it a Christian term? If not, what was it used for? This is super interesting, so listen close as Pastor Brent explains…

What is the difference between a Christian Worldview and Biblical Worldview?

In this segment today, Pastor Brent discusses a hypothetical “case study” about a young man in his late 20s who did not grow up in church, but decides to visit a church one Sunday. How do the members treat the man? What does he think about the worship and the preaching? What did he learn about “Christianity”? How did this shape his worldview of Christianity?

THE KINGDOM OF GOD:
What is the Kingdom of God?
What is a kingdom?
How do we gain entrance to the Kingdom of God?
How can we commune with God in His Kingdom?
When did the Kingdom of God begin?
Why did God have to reintroduce the Kingdom of God to the world? Pastor Brent reminds us of Abraham.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What factors contribute to our worldview? Have you ever changed your worldview? How did Jesus change peoples’ worldview? Did he have a hard time doing this?

What are the different worldviews? Pastor Brent discusses: Deism, Naturalism, Theism, Existentialism, Postmodernism, and Eastern Pantheistic Monism.

THEISM (the short version)
Prime Reality: There is one true Creator God.
Origin: We were created. We are NOT an accident.
Destiny: We either choose to live with God or reject Him.
Purpose: We are to love God and others.
Morality: God defined what is moral and what is not; we must desire to know what is moral and what is not.

What are some religions that practice Theism? Christian, Islam, Judaism, and Mormonism are just a few. Pastor Brent says: “The question is this: Who is their “god” and what does their “god” tell them is moral?”

What is the difference between a Christian Worldview and Biblical Worldview? Pastor Brent will discuss a hypothetical situation tomorrow…

Title: The Struggle is Real
Topic: Examining God’s CV/Resume
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Most people do not include the “bad things” – the things they struggle with – on a resume. But, why not? Wouldn’t that help a potential employer to know if a person was properly suited for a job?

We all struggle with something. Each day this week, Champion Forest Senior Adult Pastor Brent Johnson uses Genesis 22 (and other scripture) to compare the struggles of the Israelites to modern humanity.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Do you pray that God would give your kids an easy life? Pastor Brent says to STOP DOING THAT!!! Listen in to find out why… He also says to never stop praying for your kids!

What is the significance of The Passover? Is this a way for us to confess our struggles to God?

Pastor Brent shares a personal story about a physical struggle he recently experienced…

Life Application: God uses struggles to mold and prune us.

How did Jacob struggle? Who was the man who fought with Jacob? Was it an angel? Was it a theophany (a showing of God)? Was it Jesus? What did “the man” do to Jacob? How long did they wrestle? Who won? Was it a physical or spiritual “win”?

Side note: Has anyone seen God?

What is the significance of a name?

How did Jacob try to trick his father? Did he finally confess in the end? Why did God change Jacob’s name to Israel?

How and why does God save us from struggles?

Day 3

Most people do not include the “bad things” – the things they struggle with – on a resume. But, why not? Wouldn’t that help a potential employer to know if a person was properly suited for a job?

We all struggle with something. Each day this week, Champion Forest Senior Adult Pastor Brent Johnson uses Genesis 22 (and other scripture) to compare the struggles of the Israelites to modern humanity.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What are the causes of our struggles?

Was God punishing Abraham when He asked him to sacrifice Isaac? Does He punish US with struggles?

Another person who struggled in the Bible was Job. Oh boy, did he struggle!!! Could YOU have handled the pressure? Why did God allow Satan to torment and torture Job? Was God teaching Satan a lesson through Job??? Was it fair? Was it right? Pastor Johnson says this: “I don’t manage God’s agenda. I conform to His will.

Back to Jacob and Esau in Genesis 25-31… What was the birthright of two nations? Why was the birthright sold? How was the blessing stolen? What happened next? Tune in tomorrow for more!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What was the lesson God revealed to humanity through Abraham and Isaac?

BONUS: Where is the “most famous” place in Israel?

Why did Rebecca’s twins, Jacob and Esau, fight in the womb? Was this a sign of wars to come?

Why did God promise Abraham the 12 Tribes of Israel? Listen as Pastor Johnson reminds us of some Biblical history with Jacob and Esau…

Why do we have struggles? Does God purposefully use struggles to help us grow stronger? OR does He keep struggles from us? BOTH! Pastor Johnson uses Isaiah 55:3-8 and 2 Corinthians 5:17 to explain…

What are the causes of our struggles? Tune in tomorrow to hear the answer!

Day 5

Champion Forest Baptist Church has embarked on a church-wide, multi-week study on the book of Colossians with a new series called “Multiply”. This includes Mark’s Biblical Literacy class.

This week’s lesson is from Colossians 3 and is being taught by Associate Pastor Brent Johnson.

If you do not have a church home, this is the perfect time to visit! Click here for more details.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Brent concludes this week’s lesson on Colossians 3 with verses 15-17. In all things, put on the love of Christ. This is our purpose – to love others the way Christ loves us.

How can we show love, though, when we must admonish someone? Do we preface our conversation with “I need to tell you something you will not like, but I do this in the name of the Lord”? Of course not! Listen as Brent offers an alternative…

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Words hurt – a lot. Bullying is a real thing, and it is Satan’s favorite pastime. But guess what? God never bullies or says hurtful words! Brent goes even further, though, and reminds us that even good words should only be said in love to another person, never to make yourself look good.

Colossians 3:12-14 “Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

First, Brent Johnson reviews some of Mark Lanier’s lesson from last week: Paul’s Occupation. What Paul did for a living was very important to his life as a missionary. Remember, Paul refused to accept money for his teaching and preaching, so he had to do “something” to earn a living.

Do you know and love the hymn “How Great Thou Art”? Yes? Brent gives a fresh perspective on music from the Mormon point of view.

What if a Mormon chooses to leave the church? Can they come back? Can they visit their family or friends?

What about prayer? Are their prayers different than Christians?

Today, Brent discusses more of the historical facts that prove Christianity is true and why Mormonism cannot be proven. Also, Mormons do a lot of good; they are very nice people. Why do we need to witness to them? Are there any Mormons that are saved?

Title: New Testament Survey: James – The Conclusion
Topic: New Testament Survey
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson

Part 5

Church discipline is an issue that is seldom discussed in modern churches. It is even rarer that people are brought before an entire body in regards to unabashed and unrepentant sins. Brent Johnson gives the Biblical explanation of church discipline in the beginning of this final segment today.

How does church discipline connect to prayer, though? Prayer has been the focus of the lesson this week and is actually an important addition to church discipline. Brent offers several areas which more mature Christians can do a better, more thorough job of discipling those in the church who have strayed.

First, Brent uses James 1:5-8 as the perfect example of how to teach those who are needing assistance in their walk with God. These verses remind us that we should not beg God to help us in a situation if we are not willing to fully commit to the journey. Remember, God already has a plan for your life! You just need to realize what it is and go for it! It all boils down to trusting God in all situations.

Brent also urges us to really focus on our prayers, being more specific in requests and thankful for all He has given us. If you have anxiety about a certain situation, pray about it! Ask God to remove that anxiety from your life. Don’t just pray, asking God to forgive you for reacting in a sinful manner. Ask Him to take that sin away!

Part 4

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church and is filling in for Mark this week. On Palm Sunday, Brent spoke on the book of James, but was not able to give all the information he wanted, so he will be concluding that this week.

Don’t show your works to be saved. Show your works as a result of being saved. – Brent Johnson

Prayer is the most practiced activity in the world. People who aren’t even Christians pray. Muslims pray. Pagans pray. Reality TV stars pray! But you can’t just call on God and expect Him to show up! Brent believes that prayer is probably the most misunderstood concept of God. Even Christians don’t fully grasp the meaning.

Brent talks about a story he saw on Facebook about a young man who created a page for prayer. Sounds great, right? Nope! People are so desperate, they actually paid to have non-existent pastors pray for them! Brent has several discussion points concerning this situation. Listen in!

Brent also begins a short sub-topic on “church discipline”. Tune in tomorrow for more on that and the conclusion of his lesson this week.

Title: New Testament Survey: James – The Conclusion
Topic: New Testament Survey
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Part 3

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church and is filling in for Mark this week. On Palm Sunday, Brent spoke on the book of James, but was not able to give all the information he wanted, so he will be concluding that this week.

The book of James contains many references to other Scriptures in the Bible. Yesterday, Brent Johnson mentioned several of those passages. He continues to look at more today, like Acts 1:3 “After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.” Listen in as Brent explains that this verse is the point of Jesus’s life!

The tongue is a dangerous thing. James warned the people to tame their tongue and we should heed that warning as well. How many times have you heard something, whether at church, work, or in a group of friends, and you took that word as truth, told someone else, who told someone else, only to discover that the information was false? We should not only NOT repeat things we do not know are true or not, we should not even listen to it!

Another lesson which Brent brings up in this segment is “sticking to your word”. If you tell someone you will do something, then do it! Unless you are sick or an emergency arises, keep your promise. And never, ever lie to get out of it. We all know this – but how often do you make excuses? Ouch…

One final question from Brent today about being honest: When you are in church, singing praises to God or listening to the sermon or taking communion, are you being truthful to yourself and to God? Are there things in your life that you need to confess before even entering the church building?

Listen in as Brent concludes the segment with a word of warning to treat everyone the same – no matter what. Again, we know this! But how often do you greet the new person in your bible study group with the same enthusiasm as your good friend?

Part 2

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church and is filling in for Mark this week. On Palm Sunday, Brent spoke on the book of James, but was not able to give all the information he wanted, so he will be concluding that this week.

Today, Brent Johnson gives several examples of ways to show the love of Christ to others through the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Remember the warning, though, in verses 19-21. Brent likes to call it the “fruit of the flesh”: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Back to James, in chapter 1:21, he gives us some solutions to avoiding those “fruits of the flesh”. Then Brent jumps over to chapter 3:1: “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” However, look at Matthew 28:19: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Part 1

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church and is filling in for Mark this week. On Palm Sunday, Brent spoke on the book of James, but was not able to give all the information he wanted, so he will be concluding that this week.

Review: James was a sibling of Jesus. The book of James is believed to have been the first book of the Bible written and is referred to as the “Proverbs of the New Testament”. In his previous lesson, Brent discussed “forced perspectives”. You can click on the archives and search under Brent Johnson’s name for each lesson.

We should have joy even during hard times, right? Yes, but it’s sooooo hard! Yes, it is very, very hard to have joy during times of devastation and grief, but knowing we have a loving, caring, faithful father definitely should give us all a considerable amount of joy.

You need to decide if the trial is your fault. If it is, then repent, and don’t blame God,” Brent declares. In James, it says that God does not tempt His people, but He will send trials. “The teacher is always silent during the test.” As Christians, we were never promised an easy-breezy life. Don’t expect it. In fact, be on guard for trials and tests in order to grow your faith.

We live in a fallen world. To change it for the better, we start with one person – one heart – at a time.

Title: New Testament Survey: The Book of James
Topic: New Testament Survey
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Part 5

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, continuing the study on the New Testament Survey as we look at the book of James.

Brent concludes his lesson on the Book of James today. First, he looks at chapter five, which talks about patience and prayer. If you recall, the beginning of the book discusses the importance of prayer.

Why do you pray? Is it simply out of obedience or habit? Or is prayer more meaningful to you? Brent tells a story of meeting a Muslim woman at a bus stop who told him why she prays! Listen in to hear this great story with a reminder to us all that prayer is so very, very important.

How did you learn to pray? Did you, one day, just decide you needed to pray? No, probably not. You more than likely either heard or saw someone praying, asked questions, and tried it out for yourself! Whether you were a child or an adult, you studied someone else and modeled their behavior. But is this really the best way to learn how to pray? Listen in as Brent reads from the Book of James concerning prayer. It just might step on some toes because there are mentions of fasting and confessing sins before others….

Some believe that God hears the prayers of many concerning a specific issue over and above the prayers of one or two. This is absolutely not true! Brent reminds us of the prayer Jesus lifted up in the Garden of Gethsemane. He took the disciplines, led only a few deeper, and then prayed by himself. Do you remember what happened next? Jesus found the disciples sleeping! He then asked them to “watch and pray” – but he didn’t tell them what to pray for! Listen as Brent recounts the rest of the story, plus more!

Point for Home: Are you just praying to pray or are you really looking for the truth of God?

Title: New Testament Survey: The Book of James
Topic: New Testament Survey
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Part 4

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, continuing the study on the New Testament Survey as we look at the book of James.

Editor’s Note:
When good things happen to you that you weren’t expecting, do you thank God for it? We all do for the “big stuff” and especially the things we specifically prayed for. What about the little things, though? Maybe you’re running late for work and hit every green light on the way. Did you thank God for the ease in traffic? Maybe you found a coupon for an item you needed, but didn’t have the extra money for. Did you thank God for saving you money? Maybe your child cleaned their room without you asking multiple times. Did you thank God for their obedience? (And then tell your child that you’re proud of him?)

Another issue that James addressed was “faith and works”. This is a tricky one, especially for Baptists. Listen in as Brent reads from James 2, beginning in verse 14. James mentioned several Old Testament believers and what they taught concerning this issue. And Brent brings up another good point: After church on Sunday, what do you do to include others around you in your faith story? Do you just go to lunch, go home, and continue with life throughout the week? Or do you actively engage in conversations with those you meet? By talking and taking action, you show that faith is really alive in you! Our actions don’t “save” us, but our faith should produce action automatically!

Brent also discusses James 3:1-8 – Taming the Tongue. We have all said things in anger or the heat of the moment that we regret later. It happens because we are human. These verses aren’t all about “watching our mouths”, though. James also warns that we really need to know the truth about God’s Word. Obviously, the people James wrote to didn’t have Bibles, but he still told them to know what God said concerning certain issues. How? Read your Bible! Second, study His Word – don’t just read it. When it comes time to speak, if you really know what you’re talking about, you can speak the truth!

In James 4, he warned the people against arguing with each other. This is another big issue in every church across America. Why is there such division when it comes to the people of the church? What good does it do to constantly complain about the music selection or the temperature of the Worship Center? Why argue about who is bringing what to the potluck? Who really cares if there are thirty handicap parking spaces? Keep your focus on the One who really matters! He is the real purpose.

with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Part 3

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, continuing the study on the New Testament Survey as we look at the book of James.

When you are not prepared for a certain situation, you will oftentimes “react” one way. However, Brent points out that if you anticipate a circumstance, you will “respond” differently. Today, he looks at temptations and our “reactions” or “responses” to them.

The longer we are Christians, the easier it should be to resist temptation, right? Nope! A lot of times, it gets harder! This is exactly why we need a Savior to help us choose the right path, the right answer, the right goal, the right friends, the right job, the right spouse. For the long-time Christian, Brent says “Get with it!” Change your perspective from “just getting by to having abundant life”.

Sometimes, the way God helps us handle certain disappointments or situations is by constantly placing reminders in our path. He’s not doing it to tease us or be mean; he’s reminding us that there is something better around the corner. In James, we learn that God will use those trials – those temptations – to strengthen our faith in a way we cannot even imagine. We just have to stick with Him and not give up.

However, James warns us that we cannot be so enthralled with what God is going to do in us and through us that we miss opportunities to be His hands and feet. This goes along with the “forced perspective” idea. Listen in as Brent explains.

Part 2

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, continuing the study on the New Testament Survey as we look at the book of James.

Have you ever been “ambushed” by one of those workers at a mall kiosk? Brent tells a story today about hand exfoliation and lotion that is not only hilarious, but ties into the book of James! Yes, believe it or not – it does! People are constantly trying to sell us something – mall kiosk workers, food companies, car dealers – even churches! Listen in as he expands on “forced perspective” from yesterday’s segment.

In the book of James, we immediately see that he is talking to a specific group of people. He didn’t begin the book with a general greeting; he had a purpose. Brent goes on to explain that the people James was writing to were poor, persecuted Jews who didn’t know what to do. James wanted to give them hope for the future. The way he did this was to “force their perspective”.

How do you encounter trials? Do you face them head-on, relying solely on God to help you through? Do you complain to others first under the guise of a “prayer request”? This is often a hard undertaking for new Christians, although “seasoned Christians” often have difficulty, as well. However, if you have been a Christian for a long time, what kind of example are you setting for others when a crisis occurs?

Tune in tomorrow for more from Brent on this topic.

with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Part 1

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, continuing the study on the New Testament Survey as we look at the book of James.

There are several “James” in the Bible, so which one wrote the book of James? There is a lot of controversy over this issue, as the writer only identified himself as “as a bond servant for Christ.” Most scholars, however, agree that this particular James was the half-brother of Jesus. Listen in as Brent gives some more family history and some interesting information about this James person.

This week, Brent approaches the book of James as if it were a theological library for practical uses. In fact, James is one of the most practical books in the Bible with suggestions on how to change your perspective to God’s view. When this book was written, many Christians were not very well perceived. The first wave of persecution was on the horizon and the people were discouraged.

James desired for us to have a willing relationship with Christ and not be tricked into a “forced perspective”. Tune in tomorrow to hear a story from Pastor Brent Johnson which relates to this.

Brent uses some visual illustrations throughout the lesson this week, like the basketball picture he references today. To view them, please click on the link below for the handouts.

Day 5

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, studying St. Patrick.

Today, Brent concludes the lesson on St. Patrick. He discusses the books and chants that St. Patrick wrote, specifically about hardships. Brent reads one of his favorite chants from St. Patrick and from Deuteronomy 6. You can find the handouts online with this information at the link below.

Points for Home:

1) God can use a lot for a little. Example: Moses.

2) Hardships should draw us closer to God. We should not only comfort others, but should accept help from them when bad things happen in our own lives. Pride is always a person’s downfall.

3) Confess what has happened in your life.

Listen in as Brent goes into more detail.

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Attend the early service at 9:30 AM and then go the Family Life Center (located near the center of the church building) for his Life Group class, which begins at 11 AM. Mark’s class averages about 800 people every Sunday, so don’t be shy! Come and join them this Sunday!

Day 4

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, studying St. Patrick.

When things didn’t turn out the way that St. Patrick had envisioned, he didn’t tuck tail and sulk in the corner. He definitely did not have an easy life and he had every reason to be angry with God. Instead, he prayed – fervently.

He had been a slave for so long that when he was finally free, he did something very unorthodox. He didn’t party or get drunk or spend money unwisely. Nope! He shared the Gospel! That’s all he wanted to do. He shared the Gospel to the ship crew that he was able to board immediately after his release from slavery. Not everyone accepted and believed in Jesus, but they were open to the Truth. He planted the seed; God can do the rest.

St. Patrick was a deacon for around 30 years. He was then appointed Bishop when he was 60 years old. But he almost wasn’t given the title! Listen in as Brent Johnson explains why. He also discusses in more detail how many people St. Patrick touched through his faithfulness and willingness to follow God’s will.

NOTE: Brent Johnson says, “
When you’re doing God’s will, it’s not always easy. That doesn’t mean you’re doing the wrong thing. It just means that, in your hardship, you can learn how to minister to other people.”

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Day 3

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, studying St. Patrick.

Brent Johnson continues to discuss some back history of St. Patrick. Did you know that he banished all the snakes from Ireland? Well, there weren’t snakes there to begin with, so…

Everything Americans do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is basically made-up. The parade is just for fun. The green beer is gross. Turning rivers green is dumb. And the four-leaf clover should actually be bad luck, not good luck! Listen in as Brent tells a fun personal story involving one of his twin daughters.

Back to St. Patrick… Brent continues to discuss more about the background of St. Patrick and when he came to the revelation that he was in need of saving grace. After his conversion, St. Patrick became very obedient to God’s commands over his life. He also lived a very lowly life. As he traveled around Ireland, sharing the Gospel, he never accepted any gifts from anyone. Why? Listen in as Brent explains. One aspect of being a Christian that St. Patrick was very passionate about was a believer’s “prayer life”. He felt it was vitally important to spiritual growth to spend time in prayer, not for ourselves, but for others.

Fun Fact: St. Patrick had a dream and he walked 200 miles to see if it was true or not! Listen to find out what happened next!

Day 2

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, studying St. Patrick.

Brent Johnson continues to discuss some back history of St. Patrick. Did you know that he banished all the snakes from Ireland? Well, there weren’t snakes there to begin with, so…

St. Patrick’s family was very wealthy and probably would have had a different kind of life if he hadn’t been kidnapped and sold into slavery at the age of 15. He did have a Christian upbringing, and, after he was captured, he wrote several “confessions”, which Brent reads from in this segment today.

As a slave, Patrick was assigned to be a “shepherd”. This is not really a very “good” job – you slept with the animals, outside, and it was a hard life. Patrick knew what a “good life” looked like; he knew he was blessed before his enslavement. However, he knew he might not have given his life to Christ if he had not been kidnapped. That’s why, when he looked back on his life, he was actually grateful for his hardships.

Your circumstances can either push you toward God or push you away from Him. Which will you choose?

Day 5

St. John Chrysostom

The Points for Home:

Brent discussed the first PFH yesterday: Thank God for preachers. How would we know about Jesus if it weren’t for preachers?

The second PFH is: Be willing to receive the Word and examine the Scriptures. It’s not enough to just listen to the preacher and believe everything he tells you. Make sure you actually know the truth.

You’re spiritual journey is not about your preacher; it is about you and your zeal for the Kingdom of God. St. John Chrysostom believed that studying the Scriptures was vital to a Christian’s walk with Christ. In fact, he once said: “For that to fade away as you walk out the doors, is like pouring water into a bucket with holes in it. It does not do much good.”

St. John had a great solution for his followers – and even us today. Listen in as Brent explains and gives the third and final PFH.

Yesterday, Brent discussed the five main points St. John Chrysostom wanted the people to always remember: 1) there is the Son of God; 2) there will be a resurrection of the dead; 3) the flesh is seated in heaven; 4) Jesus will come again; and 5) the Jews will be cast out and the Gentiles will come in. St. John was under the mindsight that the Jews will not be in heaven.

Brent also brings up the interesting fact that Matthew would never utter the phrase “The Kingdom of God”; he always said “The Kingdom of Heaven”. Luke, however, would say, “The Kingdom of God.” But, why?

The Points for Home start early this week. The first PFH is: Thank God for preachers. How would we know about Jesus if it weren’t for preachers? Brent will continue with the PFH tomorrow. Brent also gives another Greek lesson about angels, so listen in!

Listen in every day to hear a portion of Mark’s lesson.

Day 3

St. John Chrysostom

Up to this point in this week’s lesson, Brent Johnson has given us the background of St. John Chrysostom – where he grew up, his education, his salvation, his mother’s influence on his life, and how he became Bishop.

Today, Brent takes a deeper look into St. John’s life as a Bishop – what he did greatly affected the people, the other priests, and even his own health. He preached a lot about repenting and his faithfulness was greatly rewarded. But then he was exiled! Twice! This ultimately led to his painful and horrific death. Listen in as Brent explains these events.

During the time of St. John, being a Christian was the “in thing” – most people were Christians in name only, not in their spirit. He aimed his sermons at the truly saved, but had a servant’s heart for everyone, especially the poor. Brent goes on to discuss in more detail some of St. John’s excellent sermons. He once said, “I cannot let a day pass without feeding you the treasures of Scripture.” Wow. What an example of faith and commitment.

St. John Chrysostom had five main points he wanted the people to always remember: 1) there is a Son of God; 2) there will be a resurrection of the dead; 3) the flesh is seated in heaven…Listen in to hear the last two promises!

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Day 2

St. John Chrysostom

So who was St. John Chrysostom? He was born in Antioch, Syria – where the term “Christian” originated. He was raised by a single mom after his military father was killed. Although it is believed that his mother was a Christian, St. John was raised with a pagan education. He even went to school to be a lawyer!

Listen in as Brent Johnson fills in the rest of the background of St. John, how and when he became a Christian, and what he did after. He eventually became the Bishop of Constantinople and he did amazing things for the people. Listen in and make sure you tune in tomorrow to hear more!

Brent also brings up a good point talking about sins. When a person in leadership, specifically ministers, mess up big-time, are their sins still forgivable? Should they still be allowed to lead others in the name of Christ?

Fun Fact: Chrysostom was not St. John’s real last name. It was given to him after he died because of his eloquent speaking ability. Chrysostom is a combination of two Greek words meaning “Golden Mouthed”.

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Attend the early service at 9:30 AM and then go the Family Life Center (located near the center of the church building) for his Life Group class, which begins at 11 AM. Day 1

St. John

Brent Johnson is the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. He is filling in for Mark this week, studying St. John. At the beginning of the lesson, he asks the question: “Who is your favorite pastor?” Even though he has already completed this week’s lesson, he would love to have an email from you on who your favorite pastor is! His email is bjohnson@cfbc.org

Brent also explains what makes a preacher “good”. Is it their teaching? Is it where they went to seminary? The way they dress? Brent reveals that a survey recently showed that 90% of people said the pastor was the deciding factor as to whether they joined a church or not.

You may not be a preacher or leader in your church, but as Christians we should trust God to lead us to a church that will feed us spiritually. If your church is not helping you grow in the Lord, then it is time to look for a new one. Period.

Jesus talked a lot about the importance of preaching. Matthew 4:23 is a great example of Jesus teaching to others. Tune in tomorrow as Brent continues with this thought pattern and begins his lesson about St. John, a great preacher himself.

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Attend the early service at 9:30 AM and then go the Family Life Center (located near the center of the church building) for his Life Group class, which begins at 11 AM. Day 5

The Origin of the Canon

Brent concludes his lesson on The Canon today. No one has ever proven the Bible to be untrue. When you read the prophesies, sometimes they are hard to understand. But, if you “study”, even a little bit, they become clearer and clearer. So, in essence, the Bible proves itself!

Do we serve God because of what we get out of it or do we serve God because He is the creator God? It doesn’t matter what happens on our end; it only matters what happens in the end. There is one aspect of The Canon that Brent looks at today: The Apocrypha. These are considered “hidden books” of the Bible. Listen in as Brent explains why the Protestant Bible doesn’t include the Apocrypha.

There was years of silence and many people wondered “Where is God?” Have you ever questioned God? Have you ever wondered “Why isn’t He answering my prayer?” He always, always answers – sometimes the answer is no; sometimes the answer is yes; and sometimes the answer is wait.

Fruit for Home: When the moment comes, will you be ready? When time is spent and you are standing before the pearly gates, will the Heavenly Father know you?

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Day 4

The Origin of the Canon

What is the best way to read through the Bible? Many people read it like a novel, and that isn’t always the best approach, especially if you’re a new Christian. If you are looking for a new and different way to read through the Bible in a year (or longer!) try the Context Bible approach that Mark Lanier developed. All the outlines and information can be found at his website listed below.

Now, on to Septuagint… You know how different words in the English language mean different things? Well, many people get confused by the teachings in the Septuagint. Brent concludes the lessons this week (today and tomorrow) by explaining it in easy to understand terms. The disciples knew what they were doing when they recounted their experiences. The scholars were very specific when they translated those stories. This was not on accident.

God doesn’t need us to over think Him. God doesn’t need embellishment. God just needs us to study The Canon and know it so we can tell others about His love, mercy, and forgiveness.

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Attend the early service at 9:30 AM and then go the Family Life Center (located near the center of the church building) for his Life Group class, which begins at 11 AM. Day 3

The Origin of the Canon

When you study the Word of God, you can’t help but grow. Brent warns us, though, not to judge others because they might not use a Bible on Sunday morning. Many people use an iPad or smart phone these days. Not everyone is as “spiritual” as another person. We are all at different levels of awareness with God. It doesn’t matter what level we are on, as long as we stay committed to getting to the next level.

During the time when the various books of the Bible were written, they obviously didn’t have them comprised in a “book”. They were written on scrolls and moved so frequently from place to place that they were hard to keep track of. So, why are the books in “our” Bible in the order they are in? Listen in as Brent begins to explain why! He will continue tomorrow with a great story and reminder of why we always must look ahead.

BONUS: If you listen closely to this segment, Brent also gives a free lesson on Star Trek and Klingons!

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Day 2

The Origin of the Canon

When there is an important event in your life, you want to record it – video, pictures, written testimony. The most significant events in history are written in the Bible. And that is why it is closed. Shut. Complete. Nothing else SHOULD be added to the Gospel. Nothing else CAN be added. Those who add to it are lying. Brent uses scripture from Deuteronomy and Revelation to support this.

FACT #1: Remember what the first book ever printed on a printing press was? THE BIBLE.

FACT #2: Do you know what the number one selling book of all time is? THE BIBLE.

FACT #3:: The Bible was written over a span of 1,500 years by 40 different authors, stretching over 3 continents and in 3 languages.

All these facts are important because it makes the Bible authentic and true. Other Canons, specifically the book of Mormon, written by Joseph Smith, are not God-ordained. Brent explains why.

But, where do we get The Canon? Why do we have it? What is the significance? Brent begins to explain the purpose of the Bible in this segment. He will continue tomorrow, so make sure you tune in!

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Day 1

The Origin of the Canon

Mark apologizes that he is not able to be here again this week. He is a busy, busy, busy man! Brent Johnson, the Associate Pastor of the Biblical Literacy Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church, will be filling in for Mark this week, studying The “Origin of the Canon”.

Learning about the canon is an “explosive subject” (Get it? Canon. Explosive. Well, different kind of cannon….) It will ignite your passion for God, His Word, and His people.

The writer of Hebrews says this: “The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword…discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

However, Brent points out, if the writer knew about canons, he would have written this differently. Brent explains why he believes this, gives a little history lesson, and discusses why studying the Bible is vital to the life of Christians, so listen in. There’s also a little tidbit from Vicar Melvin Tinker! Don’t miss it!

If you do not have a church home, Mark invites you to come to Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Day 5

It’s Revelation Time!

Mark has taken us through John and the Book of Acts and now we are finishing the Context Bible Plan with Revelation. The sermons will contain the meat of the lesson each week, so make sure you listen online or attend in person. Log on to www.ChampionForest.org for service times and locations.

Introducing: Pastor Brent Johnson!

Brent Johnson will be filling in this week for Mark Lanier. While Brent is new to listeners of the What’s UP Radio Program, he is no stranger to Champion Forest Baptist Church. He has been with Champion Forest’s broadcasting and media department for 8 years. He has previously been a youth pastor and Executive pastor at other churches. Brent and his wife Holly have 2 twin daughters who are almost 12 years old.

Brent Johnson is looking forward to his new role as Associate Pastor of the Biblical-Literacy class at Champion Forest.

Throughout history, God has given the tools to humans to relay His story. He also enables certain people to teach us His Word. We wouldn’t be where we are today if they didn’t heed His call. You must be careful, however, about false teachers.

Through our trials, through our pain, we must continue to study God’s Word, pray, and offer thanks to Him. Sometimes His answer is “yes” and sometimes His answer is “no”. He expects us to listen and accept His response. Yes, it is hard when the answer is “no”, but sometimes it is necessary.

Listen in as Brent explains why in Revelation, it says “We give thanks to the Almighty, who is and who was.” The quote usually continues “and is to come”, right? Why doesn’t it in Revelation?

We’ve studied the other six seals on The Scroll. So, what comes after the Seventh Seal – the Seventh Trumpet? Is that the end? Is there more? Listen in as Brent discusses what the earth will look like – what hell will look like – and what heaven will look like after the Seventh and Final Seal is broken.

Mark Lanier, the leader of the Context Bible study at Champion Forest Baptist Church, is a practicing attorney who also holds a B.A. in Biblical Languages from David Lipscomb University. He is both a committed student of Scripture and an excellent communicator of its truths.

Yesterday, Brent explained the significance of trumpets. Today, he discusses how each trumpet brought a different form of judgment onto the earth. Listen in as Brent describes them and gives Scripture references for each.

Thought for today: Praying is such an important aspect of a Christian’s life. Are you praying to worship God? Or are you just praying to pray? What are you teaching your children about prayer?

Brent Johnson is looking forward to his new role as Associate Pastor of the Biblical-Literacy class at Champion Forest.

Through the Context Bible Plan, Mark lays out Revelation in a way that has really never been done before. God desires us to be students of the Word, and with the Context Bible Plan, you can do it!

Yesterday, Brent discussed the Fourth and final Horseman and the fifth seal. He also explained why it is so important not to take the Lord’s name in vain. He said it’s more than just cussing or saying “Oh, G-d”. Have you ever made a promise to God? “I’ll quit this” or “I’ll do that”, if only You will... Sometimes even our prayers could be viewed as taking His name in vain if we aren’t careful.

Today, Brent moves on to the Sixth Seal, beginning in Revelation 6:12. Six different occurrences happen to six different groups of people. There is a great earthquake. The sun becomes black. The full moon becomes red. The stars fall to the earth. The sky vanished like a scroll. And, finally, every mountain and island was moved from its place.

The six groups of people who are affected are: The Kings of the Earth, the generals, the rich, the powerful, the slave, and the free. So, basically, everyone will be affected in one way or another by the Sixth Seal.

Next come the Four Angels, the number 144,000, more symbols and numbers, and their significance in regards to the End Times. The Angels come in between the Sixth and Seventh Seal, which introduces the next set of trumpets.

Trumpets were important in John’s time for several reasons. First, trumpets were used to gather the people together for assemblies. They were also used as a warning. In battle, the trumpeters first in line – even before the soldiers!

In today’s segment, Brent Johnson reviews the Four Horsemen: The First was a White Rider on A White Horse. Some believe that the rider and horse represent something evil, but Brent explains that, in Revelation, the color white always refers to being holy.

The Second Horseman rode a Red Horse; this color represents the slain Christians who were killed for their faith. The Third is the Black Horse whose rider had a pair of scales. The third seal represents economic woes.

Tune in tomorrow to hear about the Fourth Horseman and more!

Quote of the lesson today: “No matter how you look at the Book of Revelation, the outcome is the same: God wins!” Amen! Isn’t that something to look forward to?

It’s the Little Things that Matter

Yesterday, Brent started discussing the importance of the seals on The Scroll. The seals, which represent the blood Jesus shed for us on the cross, bound The Scroll together. The seals also represent authority, authenticity, and integrity.

You can’t pick and choose which parts of the Gospel you want to follow. This isn’t Luby’s. You can’t just choose chicken, potatoes, a veggie, and dessert. You have to take one of everything or nothing at all. Yes, there are some prophecies that haven’t come true, but of the ones that have, have been exactly the way it was predicted.

We must remember that we were created by God and for God. He wants and desires our fellowship! The greatest way we can worship Him is to lay down all our burdens at His feet. The second way to worship Him is to witness to others.

Interesting Fact: Nike derived their slogan straight from a Greek word! Listen in as Brent explains!

It’s the Little Things that Matter

Through the disciples, God revealed Himself to the people. We are still reaping the benefits of His Revelation! Amen! As Christians, we are the revealer of secrets. That’s why we have the Bible. Now, the Bible is definitely NOT a secret. Obviously! But so many people are still in the dark about the Gospel and saving grace of Jesus Christ. That is certainly true across the world – even in your own community.

Is your life revealing Jesus Christ? Do your neighbors know? Do your co-workers? Does the cashier at the grocery store? What about the guy who just cut you off in traffic? Are your actions revealing Jesus Christ? We have a responsibility to reveal the secrets of God to everyone around us – even (and especially!) when we don’t want to.

In this second segment today with Brent, he takes a deeper look at The Scroll, which Mark covered last week (you can access archives here or found at the link below). When John found out about The Scroll, he wept bitterly. Why did it affect him so intimately?

Also, remember the significance of the seven seals? Just like the seals bound The Scroll together, the blood of Jesus Christ binds us to Him. It is His protection over us. It is His promise.

When you think about the disciples and how they worked together in groups or pairs, you realize the importance of being around other Christians. That is why it so vital to be plugged into a church, particularly a Bible Study Class. Sure, there are hypocrites in the church – but aren’t you one, too?

God wants us to be in fellowship with other Christians so we can grow together as we learn more about Him. It’s hard to learn something new on your own. When you are with others who are studying the same thing, you’ll remember more and be able to apply it to your life better and in more practical ways.

Favorite quote from today’s segment: “To obey is better to sacrifice.” Listen in as Brent explains this statement.

Title: THE CONTEXT BIBLE: LESSON 46
Topic: The Context Bible
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 1

It’s the Little Things that Matter

In this first segment this week, Brent gives a brief introduction of who he is. Make sure you check out the slides because there are some very embarrassing….I mean cute, yeah cute…pictures of Brent as a child. :)

Brent continues the Context Bible Plan with a brief review of the Book of Revelation that Mark has been teaching the last few weeks. Revelation is “revealing” to us – it is the study of the Apocalypse. It is not something He saved for the end; He actually began way back with Abraham! Through His people, He will reveal Himself to the world.

Teachers will come and go. Pastors will be here for a while and then move on. But the Word of God will remain forever. Don’t keep it a secret. Pass the legacy to your children and others, so the world may know the Truth.

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”
