Day 1

Several weeks ago (March 25-29) Mark Lanier asked this question: Where is God? This week, he expands on this and asks: Is God guilty of fraud?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is God one being? Or is He three? He says He is love, but we can see His hatred in certain things. So, is He love or hate? Is He compassionate? Or does He show too much condemnation?

Why can’t we see God?

Is Christianity a belief system that makes sense? Is Christianity “non” sense? Are there conflicting stories from the Bible?

Does the universe exist naturally? Or did God create everything from nothing? Is God within the universe or outside the universe?

Title: The Struggle is Real
Topic: Examining God’s CV/Resume
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Most people do not include the “bad things” – the things they struggle with – on a resume. But, why not? Wouldn’t that help a potential employer to know if a person was properly suited for a job?

We all struggle with something. Each day this week, Champion Forest Senior Adult Pastor Brent Johnson uses Genesis 22 (and other scripture) to compare the struggles of the Israelites to modern humanity.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Do you pray that God would give your kids an easy life? Pastor Brent says to STOP DOING THAT!!! Listen in to find out why… He also says to never stop praying for your kids!

What is the significance of The Passover? Is this a way for us to confess our struggles to God?

Pastor Brent shares a personal story about a physical struggle he recently experienced…

Life Application: God uses struggles to mold and prune us.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How did Jacob struggle? Who was the man who fought with Jacob? Was it an angel? Was it a theophany (a showing of God)? Was it Jesus? What did “the man” do to Jacob? How long did they wrestle? Who won? Was it a physical or spiritual “win”?

Side note: Has anyone seen God?

What is the significance of a name?

How did Jacob try to trick his father? Did he finally confess in the end? Why did God change Jacob’s name to Israel?

How and why does God save us from struggles?

Day 3

Most people do not include the “bad things” – the things they struggle with – on a resume. But, why not? Wouldn’t that help a potential employer to know if a person was properly suited for a job?

We all struggle with something. Each day this week, Champion Forest Senior Adult Pastor Brent Johnson uses Genesis 22 (and other scripture) to compare the struggles of the Israelites to modern humanity.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What are the causes of our struggles?

Was God punishing Abraham when He asked him to sacrifice Isaac? Does He punish US with struggles?

Another person who struggled in the Bible was Job. Oh boy, did he struggle!!! Could YOU have handled the pressure? Why did God allow Satan to torment and torture Job? Was God teaching Satan a lesson through Job??? Was it fair? Was it right? Pastor Johnson says this: “I don’t manage God’s agenda. I conform to His will.

Back to Jacob and Esau in Genesis 25-31… What was the birthright of two nations? Why was the birthright sold? How was the blessing stolen? What happened next? Tune in tomorrow for more!

What was the lesson God revealed to humanity through Abraham and Isaac?

BONUS: Where is the “most famous” place in Israel?

Why did Rebecca’s twins, Jacob and Esau, fight in the womb? Was this a sign of wars to come?

Why did God promise Abraham the 12 Tribes of Israel? Listen as Pastor Johnson reminds us of some Biblical history with Jacob and Esau…

Why do we have struggles? Does God purposefully use struggles to help us grow stronger? OR does He keep struggles from us? BOTH! Pastor Johnson uses Isaiah 55:3-8 and 2 Corinthians 5:17 to explain…

What kind of struggles are there?

What have been some of Israel’s struggles throughout history?

Pastor Johnson reminds us of Abraham and Isaac…
What did God promise Abraham?
Why did God ask Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son?

Ezekiel 20:37 – God has a fence of protection around us. Are you hugging the fence, looking over it for something better? Or do you trust that the fence is there because your yard is so much better?

Psalm 23:6 – God CHASES you! The Message: “Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life.”

Psalm 139: 7 – Do you believe in predestination and free will? Can you escape God? Can you hide from Him?

John 6:44 – Will you ever hear God say: “How did you get in here?” Nope!

1 John 4:19 – He loved us first! Pastor Riling lived in South Africa as a child. His parents were not Christians, but the school he attended taught Bible classes. Tune in on Friday to hear the rest of his story.

with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

How is God unique? Isn’t He just like “other gods”? How do you explain the Trinity to non-believers? Why SHOULD you explain the Trinity to non-believers?

Mark doesn’t consider the Trinity a “hard discussion” but it can be a confusing one. Listen each day as he offers both practical and Biblical advice.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How does the virgin birth prove the existence of God and the Trinity?

If you don’t believe in the Trinity, how do you explain John 1:18? “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.” Mark uses several other Scriptures to back this one up: Matthew 3:16; John 15:26; Ephesians 4:30

How do we know that the Holy Spirit is real?

Lessons to Go:
1. God does not fit into our “categories”
2. Express the unity of the Trinity
3. Worship God as the Trinity

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Can “human” analogies explain who God is? Yes and no…

Is the word “Trinity” in the Bible? If not, when and where did it become a way to explain God? Does the Bible “hint” at the Trinity, though?

New Testament Scripture References: James 2:19; Galatians 3:20; Romans 3:30; 1 Timothy 2:5; 1 Corinthians 8:4; Philippians 2:5-11; Romans 10:9, 12-13

Most other religions center around man getting to God, not God coming to man.
Christianity does not require good works to live eternally in Heaven, unlike other religions.

Day 5

Mark Lanier has been taking us through a new series this year: Examining God’s Curriculum Vitae (God’s Resume). So far, Mark has looked at the love, hate, and justice of God. This week, he adds in death and poses a few questions to explain how all four of these traits of God merge together.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How can we follow God’s example this week?

TAKE ACTION!

1. Understand that God poured out His wrath on Jesus out of love for you. John 3:16
2. Accept sin as sin. “If we’re not willing to admit the severity of sin, we have minimized Jesus’ death on the cross.” Romans 1:32 3.
3. Realize that this changes everything. 1 Peter 2:21-25

Once again, Mark closes his lesson with a quote from Professor Dr. Harvey Floyd: “The simplest thing about the Gospel is that Christ died for our sins. The most profound thing about the Gospel is that Christ died for our sins.”

The key to understanding who God is, is Scripture. Everything we need to know about God is within the pages of the Bible. This week, Mark Lanier will be examining the first character trait of God: love. What kinds of love are there? How are they different? How do we apply the various types of love in our own lives?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What did Paul say about Agape love? Romans 5:8 is one example. 1 Corinthians 13 is another…

The last kind of love is “storge” – a parental love. Doesn’t this describe God perfectly? He is our Father, after all! Mark uses Isaiah 49:15-16 as an example.

But wait! There are two sides to every story, right? There are those that say God must be hateful because of all the war, poverty, starvation, and evil in the world. Nope! Not true. Ecclesiastes 3:8, Isaiah 61 and Amos 5 Romans 12:9; Luke 6:27-36. Tune in next week as Mark discusses this further.

Lessons to Go:
