Title: Study on Colossians
Topic: Study on Colossians
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

This week, Mark Lanier concludes his lessons on Colossians, which was part of a church-wide, multi-week study. This week’s lesson is from Colossians 4

If you do not have a church home, this is the perfect time to visit! Click here  for more details.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is your moral pipe? Is it in a straight line? Or is your moral pipe bent and curved and broken and twisted?

We all get a second chance to straighten our moral pipe each day. Mark reminds us: “Any bending is part of the old you that Jesus put to death on the cross. The new creation is not the bent part. The part that is going to last forever is not the bent part.

Why did God give us a way to live with Him forever in Heaven? Why would He even want to do that?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is the purpose of Jesus’s parable, “The Ten Virgins”, found in Matthew 25, beginning in verse 13?

Mark uses an example of a lamp with oil to explain this parable…

What does the word “watch” mean in this parable?

Mark 13:34 is another good resource to reference when studying this…

Should prayer be more than just repeating a mantra every day? NOTE: The Lord’s Prayer is good, but it is not something we should say every day… Listen as Mark explains why…

Why did Paul also urge the people in Colossae to be thankful in their prayers? Should we do the same?

How did Paul usually structure his letters to the various churches?

Why should practical living be part of our daily worship?

In Colossians 4, why did Paul ask for prayer for an open door?

What does “cronos” mean? Hint: Chronology… Fun Info: In Greek, it is “kiairos”.

Another meaning for the word time is “opportunity”. Listen as Mark explains…

Points for Home: You are the mirror of God. Act like it! The grace of God is the cross of Christ The Bible is instructions for living.

Day 5

Champion Forest Baptist Church has embarked on a church-wide, multi-week study on the book of Colossians with a new series called “Multiply”. This includes Mark’s Biblical Literacy class.

This week’s lesson is from Colossians 3 and is being taught by Associate Pastor Brent Johnson.

If you do not have a church home, this is the perfect time to visit! Click here for more details.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Brent concludes this week’s lesson on Colossians 3 with verses 15-17. In all things, put on the love of Christ. This is our purpose – to love others the way Christ loves us.

How can we show love, though, when we must admonish someone? Do we preface our conversation with “I need to tell you something you will not like, but I do this in the name of the Lord”? Of course not! Listen as Brent offers an alternative…

Points for Home:
1. Set your mind on the things above
2. Kill the things on your to-do list that aren’t important

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Words hurt – a lot. Bullying is a real thing, and it is Satan’s favorite pastime. But guess what? God never bullies or says hurtful words! Brent goes even further, though, and reminds us that even good words should only be said in love to another person, never to make yourself look good.

Colossians 3:12-14 “Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Colossians 3 and 4 are very practical chapters in comparison to the first two chapters. Brent will be discussing some of the differences this week, beginning with a look at Colossians 2:20.

Monks deprive themselves of speech or human contact in order to become more spiritual. What does God say, though, about “human deprivation”?

Brent reminds us what we must do as Christians:
1) Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus and
2) Be accountable for your own actions.

Day 5

Champion Forest Baptist Church has embarked on a church-wide, multi-week study on the book of Colossians with a new series called “Multiply”. This includes Mark’s Biblical Literacy class.

This week’s lesson is from Colossians 2:1-7

If you do not have a church home, this is the perfect time to visit! Click here for more details.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why is taking notes important? Did Paul think it was important to take notes, too? Listen as Mark tells a story from when he had been a lawyer for just a short time. The secretary for his boss refused to take notes!

Have you gotten distracted by life: work, spouse, kids, golf? Is God taking a backseat? You may not even realize it is happening! Mark says: “You’ve taken your eye of the prize.” Don’t let that happen!

Maybe you haven’t gotten distracted, but you live too much by the rules. However, Jesus is not about rules; Jesus is about relationships. Mark looks at Colossians 2:16-23 in today’s lesson.

Mark also says: “We don’t work for Jesus because we have to; we do it because we want to.

Points for Home:
Satisfaction, joy, and answers are all found in Jesus.
Find the truth about Jesus.
Strengthen your relationship with Jesus and watch the effects multiply.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark offers a great visual today in how to keep your faith in Jesus by using Colossians 2:7…

WARNING: Falsehoods will handcuff you! You cannot function properly. You must first recognize the root causes of them. Mark reads further in Colossians in chapter 2:8-15 to explain.

What does incarnation mean?

What does “spiritual circumcision” mean?

Are you walking around diluted from the reality of God? You may be!

Paul wrote over and over and over again “I want you to know Jesus.” Why? Our beliefs affect what we practice. Translation: Live what you believe.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Check out the video of Mark’s class for this lesson! (found at the link below) Seriously, you do NOT want to miss Mark’s AMAZING drawing of Abraham…

How was Abraham saved? Through faith! This is exactly what Paul wrote to the people in Colossians 2. Have faith. Stay strong. Keep on truckin’. (paraphrased, obviously)

Mark says: “You don’t need to look to money, your horoscope, or a magic 8 ball. You don’t need to look any further than the God who made you, who loves you, and who redeemed you in Jesus.

Paul added some very wise words to this letter in Colossians 2 in verses 6 and 7: “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

There were three towns in the Lycos Valley: Colossae, Laodicea, and Herophilus. The letter in Colossians 2 is directed to these towns.

Where do we get the word “agony” from?

Why did Paul choose to struggle for the people?

Economic Lesson: Supply and demand is first. But, we must also remember that opportunity costs something (not necessarily money). Mark discusses why this, specifically, affected Paul so greatly.

Why did Paul write Colossians 2:1-5 in one long, continuous sentence?

What is the Greek word for “mystery”? Why did Paul write of God’s mystery? What was God’s mystery?

Fun Fact, which has nothing to do with the lesson, but interesting anyway: Scholars don’t know exactly why the New Testament is ordered in the manner it is. Listen as Mark Lanier discusses the two main theories. He also offers a short geography lesson.

What satisfies your heart? What satisfies your mind? Where do you find satisfaction? What is the source of your joy? What makes you happy and joyful? Where do you find the answers to the nagging questions of life?

The world’s response is: Money, the internet, food, or your horoscope.

Mark’s response: A SONG!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Who on earth is Philo and why did he write about the invisible God? Listen as Mark explains that Philo was a pretty smart man and many people followed his teachings – and still do.

Other “problems” with Colossians 1:15-29 2. The sing-song A/B words
a) Paul specifically wrote “in heaven AND on earth” etc to explain that God was over everything.
3. The Prototokos (mention of Jesus as the first-born)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How to dig deeper into the Scripture:
1. Look at other Scriptures that are similar
2. Look for other commentary on the issue (Mark mentions “The All Sufficient Christ” by William Barclay)
(These two were discussed on Tuesday’s program. Click on the archives to hear more.)
3. Look for “good” commentary – this is different than the above! A good resource is the “New International Commentary of the New Testament”.
4. Look at Greek text (if you know it!)

In addition to studying the Scriptures in depth, Mark says that sometimes there are “problem passages” or “problem words”. Listen as he discusses the following:
1. Visible/invisible
a) How can God be both visible and invisible?
b) What does “icon” mean?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is there a “right” way to study an Epistle (letters)? Mark has some suggestions:
1. Read the entire Epistle all at once
2. Make notes and ask questions
3. Once you’ve read the entire Epistle, study it in sections
4. Apply the information to your life

Did Paul intend for his Epistles to be read one verse (or line) at a time?

Why is it important to know who the Epistle was written to?

Why do modern versions of the Bible have subtitles? Paul obviously didn’t do that!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What was the “good news” for Paul?

In 1 Corinthians 15:1, Paul reminded the people of Corinth the same thing he is telling the people of Colossae. Why was this message so important?

Isaiah 27:6 “In days to come Jacob shall take root, Israel shall blossom and put forth shoots and fill the whole world with fruit.” This is an Old Testament claim of the good news, or Euaggeliou – the Gospel.

Mark continues with this same explanation by looking at Isaiah 11:2 and 9…

The people of Colossae knew who Paul was. They knew him well, in fact. Why did he begin his letter to the Colossians by introducing himself?

Colossian 1:3-14 is a prayer from Paul to the church in Colossae.

Why did Paul include faith, hope, and love in this prayer?

Mark continues to use other Scripture passages to explain Paul’s warning from Colossians 2:21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”

Why was Paul so concerned that the church was in danger of being captivated by false teachings?

Why was there such disagreement over circumcision?

Christianity is the prophetic fulfillment that God promised to the Hebrew nation (Jews). Were the Jews taking advantage of this fact by bullying the Gentiles?

Colossians 2:21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!” Why have so many sermons been preached on this verse as a warning?

What was Paul’s purpose in this verse? Was there an event which led him to tell this to the people of Colossae? Tune in tomorrow as Mark uses other Scripture passages to explain…

Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 1

We hope you enjoyed the Torah devotions presented by Mark Lanier the last few weeks.

On January 28, Champion Forest Baptist Church started a church-wide, multi-week study on the book of Colossians with a new series called “Multiply”. This includes Mark’s class. If you do not have a church home, this is the perfect time to visit! Click here  for more details.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The letter of Colossians was written to the people in Colossae by Paul.

Listen as Mark offers a geography/history lesson about the Middle East/Mediterranean area…

Were there volcanoes?

What about sheep – were there a lot of sheep?

Was the coast essential to life in the City?

There were banks and financial institutions and three different population groups, including Jews. How are these two facts connected and why is it significant? Tune in tomorrow for more!
