Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark has quite a lot of knowledge in Hebrew and Greek. He has studied the languages for decades. He is not simply guessing at what the Truth is. He knows.

Who is God? And why is Joseph Smith’s account of Him wrong? Mark uses the story of the Samaritan woman at the well as an example, as well as others in Timothy and Colossians.

Mormons take so much from the Bible “literally”, like the passage in Isaiah 49:16 where God says “I have engraved you Israel in the palms of my hands”. Does this mean that God has physical hands?

The important thing to remember is that God is always at work in you – without fail, His “hands” are covering you. Tomorrow we will look at 1 Samuel 5:11…

During the 1800’s, the majority of countries, especially the larger ones, had a national religion. Not so in America. The Founding Fathers made sure that the people would be free to practice – or not practice – whatever religion they wanted to.

Day 1

For the first lesson this New Year (from January 8, 2017), Mark Lanier dives right back into his series “Why I Am Not…” with part three of “Why I Am Not a Mormon”.

There isn’t much about the Mormon faith that Mark Lanier doesn’t like. In fact, he loves the people and is impressed with their devotion and dedication to the Lord. However, from his perspective, Mormonism is just not right; it’s not truthful. It’s just too inconsistent. And that is not okay with Mark.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Do Mormons believe the Bible is true? Why do they believe the Book of Mormon is “supplemental material”? If they are both correct, they should never contradict each other. But…they do!

What was life like in the 1820’s in America? Mark believes that understanding the history of the time really gives you more of an idea of Joseph Smith’s frame of mind.

Mark also compares Europe to America during that time and describes the various denominations within the Christian faith that were constantly popping up. He will continue with this explanation tomorrow, so make plans to tune in!

John 1:1 “In the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” How did Joseph Smith translate this verse? Hint: The translation is not even close to the Greek!
