Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why are “witnesses” important in the Kingdom of God? Will God always help and guide us as we witness to others?

What is the purpose of God’s Word? Is it “just a book of stories”? Why should we dive into the Word every day? What if we don’t understand what we read?

Why does God desire a relationship with us? Pastor Brent reminds us of the Parables of the Lost Coin, the Lost Sheep, and the Prodigal Son. (Luke 15)

Why are relationships important? (Genesis 20; Luke 10:25-27; Matthew 5:23-24)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How has God reversed the world? Yesterday, Pastor Brent shared how Abraham and Moses demonstrated the love and person of Jesus without ever even meeting him! Today he discusses the importance of judges, priests, and prophets. He also reminds us that earthly, human kings were not in God’s original plan; kings were man’s idea! It’s all about God’s will and man’s free will.

Jesus had a “small group”. Why did Jesus believe having a small group of friends was important?

Will the Gospel continue if we do nothing? Pastor Brent says: “Yes, but….” (Luke 4:43; Acts 1:8)

Why are “witnesses” important in the Kingdom of God?

REVIEW:

Why should we read the Bible with our ears open, as well as our mind and our heart?
It’s easy to get distracted with the things of this world – even at church! How can we stay focused?
God designed the world. Is it how He imagined it would be?

How has God reversed the world? Pastor Brent shares how Abraham and Moses demonstrated the love and person of Jesus without ever even meeting him!

Why did Moses and Elijah depart, leaving Jesus alone? (Matthew 17:8; Mark 9:8) “Moses and Elijah salute their divine successor and then leave him alone in his unchallenged supremacy, the sole object of his disciples’ veneration.” (New Testament commentator)

Is God the sole object your worship? Or do you treat God like a Genie in a bottle? Do you truly want to see the glory of God manifest in all you do? Or do you only seek God when you need something? (John 1:12; 2 Peter 1:16-19)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

CONTEXT OF THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL (Luke 12:13-21)
When Jesus was asked to intervene in an inheritance squabble, what was his answer? Is it more important to take care of our own soul or the soul of others? Why didn’t this man want to give up his “stuff”? Did the man in this Parable understand what Jesus was saying? Why should we give everything to God? Mark warns us NOT to do it for recognition from the world.

CONTEXT OF THE PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS (Luke 16:19-31)
Was this a “real story” as compared to an allegorical tale?
How “rich” was this rich man?
What was the man doing at the gate of the rich man’s house? br /> What happened to both men?
When the rich man was in Hades, what did he ask of Abraham?
What was Abraham’s response?
Why did the rich man ask Abraham to send someone to warn his brothers?
WWhat is the “moral” of this Parable?

THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN (Luke 10:30-35)
Background from yesterday: Origen was a teacher in Alexandria, Egypt in the 200’s AD who taught that Parables should be read as allegories.

What was Origen’s allegorical approach to this Parable? This is really interesting!

What did theologian John Calvin say about Origen’s allegorical approach of this Parable?

THE PARABLE OF THE FOUR SOILS (Luke 8:4-15)
Why is it important to understand the context of the day when reading Scripture?

What is the “moral” of this Parable?

What are Parables?

Mark shares a story a friend of his from the Middle East told him about a scorpion and a tortoise.

Oxford Dictionary definition of Parable: allegory, proverb, discourse, speech, talk

What does Parable mean in Greek? What does Parable mean in Hebrew? Is this what Jesus used when he spoke?

Were Parables widely used by Rabbis and religious leaders? Mark references the book by Steven Notley, “Parables of the Sages”, which explains the Parables used in the Bible and why they were used. What is the purpose of Parables?

Why don’t most Parables use specific references to time or places?

Do Parables describe reality?

Were people telling Parables long before Jesus did?

Mark shares about a school in Alexandria, Egypt in the 200’s AD and a teacher named Origen, who taught that Parables should be read as allegories.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

John Calvin on the Sabbath: “God’s grace doesn’t rest on the Sabbath. The Sabbath is God’s special day to save His people!”

THE WOMAN WITH THE DISABLING SPIRIT
Luke 13:10-17
Who was the woman in the Synagogue? What was her ailment? Was she considered an outsider?
Did this woman approach Jesus or did he call her to him? What did he say to her? Did he heal her?
What did the ruler of the Synagogue do when Jesus healed the woman on the Sabbath? Did he indirectly shame Jesus?
How did Jesus rebuke the ruler?

DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM Luke 23: 27-31
What was happening in this chapter of Luke? Why were people following Jesus – crying?
Why did Jesus specifically address the women in the crowd?
Did Jesus ever pretend that the world was perfect and what we should desire? (This is a rhetorical question!)

POINTS FOR HOME:
Quit blaming Jesus for your worries and problems.

Mark concludes his discussion on Martha and Mary with a reminder that we always need to be learning more and more about Jesus and the Word of God. No matter how much we think we know, we can always learn more.

A WOMAN IN THE CROWD SHOUTED AT JESUS Luke 11:27-28

What is the context behind these verses?

Why did the woman in the crowd shout out to Jesus: “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed”? Was this an odd proclamation?

How did Jesus respond to her? Was he reprimanding her? Or was he simply shifting the focus of her praise?

How can we “hear” the Word of God? Mark says: “This (the Bible) is God revealing Himself to us through the ages… so we can know Him better… and have a better understanding of our faith.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How are the four Gospels the same? How are they different? How is Luke unique? Mark reminds us that God makes dramatic U-turns in the lives of His people.

Five passages in Luke about women that the other Gospels don’t have:
Luke 7:11-8:3 (This is the focus of his lesson this week.)
Luke 10:38-42
Luke 11:27-28
Luke 13:10-17
Luke 23: 27-31

Luke 7:11-8:3 (first section thru vs 17)

Where was the town Nain? Why did Jesus go there?

Who was the widow in Nain and why was there a crowd with her?

When someone died back then, why were the people who touched the body considered unclean for seven days? This is very interesting, and Mark quotes New Testament scholar, Joel Green, to explain. (Click the link above and fast-forward to the 26-minute mark for the full quote.)

Who is our “neighbor”? Are they just the people who live next-door or in our neighborhood? Are they just the people who look like us, think like us, and live like us? Or does neighbor refer to “everyone”? (Luke 10:30-35)

How did the Good Samaritan help the man who had been robbed? Dr. Capes lists six things…

How did God reverse the question from the lawyer? How did God reverse the situation in the parable of the Good Samaritan?

Why should we be like the Good Samaritan? Dr. Capes reminds us that compassion can be costly, but it is so worth it!

with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

What is one of the major themes of the Gospel of Luke? Mark says: “God is reversing this world!” This week, Mark Lanier looks at Luke from the perspective of God making a U-Turn.

His focus will be on three areas:
The Good News
The Bad News
Thinking Logically About Both

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

BLESSINGS AND WOES FROM LUKE’S BEATITUDES Luke 6:20-26
The poor receive the Kingdom of Heaven. The rich already got theirs.
The hungry get satisfied. The full will be hungry.
The weeping will laugh. The laughing will mourn and weep.
The hated will receive a great reward in the Kingdom of Heaven. The spoken highly of will be treated like false prophets.
How should this change our mission, vision, and values?

At the trial academy seminar Mark recently hosted, he invited anyone who wanted to hear his testimony to attend a breakfast. 500 people showed up! Praise Jesus! Listen to what else happened when he spoke with a young woman who attended the breakfast. Mark also discusses Luke 16:19-30.

POINTS FOR HOME:
Refocus how you view everything. Refocus how you treat people.
God has done great things – and He is STILL doing great things.
Be on Team God!

BAD NEWS: Luke 1:51-53

Yesterday, Mark compared the proud and the wealthy to dandelions blowing in the wind. He also revealed what God does with the humble and hungry. Today he reminds us that we, in America, have “an embarrassment of riches compared to some people in the world.” What are we to do with the riches God has given to us?

What are The Beatitudes? Mark compares the Gospel of Mark’s Beatitudes to the Gospel of Luke’s Beatitudes, explaining why Luke used 4 blessings and 4 woes in his interpretation. These are more examples of U-Turns in the Bible.

Tune in tomorrow as Mark discusses some of the history behind abortion in America, going all the way back to the Civil War.

POINTS FOR HOME:
Give right. Do it out of character. Do it because it is righteous.
Pray right. Don’t pray for the people listening. Pray for the One who is listening.
Fast right. Don’t tell anyone about it! Do it for the right reasons.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Yesterday, Mark discussed the importance of praying in secret, unlike the Jews and hypocrites. Today, he continues with these verses and also teaches on fasting.

APPLICATION FOR PRAYING
: Matthew 6:5-15

What is the significance of Jesus saying: “the Father who sees in secret will reward you”? Mark references Romans 2:28-29. How does God want us to pray? Mark believes this is a complicated question with a complicated answer… How did Jesus instruct the people to pray? Why should we pray in secret? What is the Lord’s Prayer? (verses 9-13)

APPLICATION FOR FASTING:
Matthew 6:16-18

Many Christians are not big on fasting. Mark admits that he had trouble with fasting, too, at one time. Why is it important, though? What was Jesus’ warning to the people about fasting like the hypocrites?

Why did Jesus command Christians to give to the needy?
More importantly, why did Jesus command Christians to give in secret?
How are we to do this?

APPLICATION FOR PRAYING
: Matthew 6:5-15
Why did Jesus warn the people to not be like the “hypocrites”?
How often did Jews pray every day? What did they pray? Why did they usually pray standing up?

Day 5

Mark Lanier continues the Snapshots of Jesus series with a great reminder this week that God’s Word is intentional and purposeful, comparing the Gospels of Mark and Matthew.

Mark’s focus this week:
Explore the context
Consider the passages
Applying the context to our lives

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Book Reference: “Messengers: Who We Listen To, Who We Don’t, and Why” by Stephen Martin and Joseph Marks

APPLYING THE CONTEXT TO OUR LIVES

Do you love others as Christ loves you? Always? Or only when someone is watching? Or only “some” people?

Mark shares a great story from a case that lasted a decade. What made this case so memorable was a “game” the lawyers played during a “meeting”. The “game” was telling each other about the best concert they ever attended. Mark countered with the great passage from Matthew 20:30-34 when Jesus healed two blind men. What was the lawyers’ reaction to the story?

Do you ever miss out on an opportunity to witness to someone or help a person in need because you are too wrapped up in your own world?

Points to Ponder:

God loves me
God loves you
God is at work

Side Bar/Question: Did Jesus speak Greek, as well as Aramaic and Hebrew? Mark believes that this passage in Matthew indicates that he did!

Why did Jesus call the Pharisees and scribes hypocrites?

When Jesus heard that the Pharisees were offended, what was his epic response? Mark will continue this explanation tomorrow.

Title: Holy Week
Topic: Snapshots of Jesus
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

This week, we are sharing Mark Lanier’s lesson from Palm Sunday. He is still in his Snapshots of Jesus series, but will be teaching from all four Gospels, not just Matthew, in addition to using some Old Testament references, explaining what each day of Holy Week means and why we celebrate it.

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

MAUNDY THURSDAY: John 13:4-9

Mark admits that he has always thought “maundy” was a funny word and shares a story from his childhood to explain…

What does “maundy” mean, though? Is it actually pretty important?

Why did Jesus rise from supper, wrap a towel around his waist, and wash the disciples’ feet? Remember: Only slaves washed people’s feet, so this act being performed by Jesus was extremely confusing to the disciples, especially Simon Peter.

Points to Ponder:

Stand amazed
Meet Jesus
Prepare for Easter

ASH WEDNESDAY: John 12:1-8; Genesis 3:15

What are the two ways Ash Wednesday is celebrated in the Church?

Why did Martha wipe Jesus’ feet with her hair?

What is the significance of Mary using a POUND of ointment? Mark explains a pun that is lost in translation in the John passage…

Why did Judas chastise Mary for “wasting” the ointment?

What was Jesus’ response to Judas?

Francis August Schaeffer, an American evangelical theologian, philosopher, and Presbyterian pastor, once said: “We can truly know God, but we cannot know God fully.”

Mark reads from Revelation 19:11-16, the second coming of Jesus.

HOLY TUESDAY: John 1:29; Acts 8:32; Isaiah 53:7-8
Why does Mark call the Bible the “puzzle of God”?
How did the message and testimony of Jesus evolve?
Why is it important to know and understand the prophecies from the Old Testament in relation to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus?

Did Jesus really take on the sins of every human? Was this “just”? Mark will complete his great explanation for this tomorrow…

HOLY MONDAY: Matthew 21:1-5; Zachariah 9:9; Revelation 19:11-16

Why did Jesus ask for a colt/donkey? Was this an animal “fit for a king” – especially a “conquering king”? Mark has a fantastic explanation as to why Jesus chose this specific animal instead of entering in a grand fashion.

Will Jesus really come again one day? Will he come in the same way he entered Jerusalem or will it be in a different manner? Why is it important to not “label” Jesus? Mark explains why names were so important back then.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

DISTINCTIONS:

Why is God more concerned with the internal than then external?
Why do we strive to be righteous and good?
What is the purpose of the Ten Commandments?
Did Jesus say to hate our enemies? What did Jesus mean when he said “pray for those who persecute you”? Mark explains that “hate” doesn’t mean what we typically think it means.

REMEMBER: Christianity is more than just a list of do’s and don’ts. We are to be transformed by the Holy Spirit!

Points to Ponder:
Listen to Jesus.
Choose wisely.
Work on the inside, too.

What did “heart” mean to the Hebrews?

Is it ever appropriate to use force as a Christian? Mark has a great answer for this!

Scripture Reference: 2 Samuel 22:28; Psalm 37:11

DISTINCTIONS:

How is Jesus different from Moses?

We all know “you shall not murder”. Why did Jesus specifically mention this commandment in the Sermon on the Mount? And why did he add more insight to this?

Why did Jesus also preach about adultery? Was he super serious about this commandment as well?

What is “typology”? This is interesting stuff! Listen close…

How was Jesus “like Moses”? Dr. Capes points out that, unlike the Israelites, Jesus never disappointed His Father.

Points to Ponder:

Jesus liberated women to a new role in the Kingdom.
Jesus elevated the outsider.
Jesus was a friend to sinners.
Jesus was a promise-keeper.

Why is Jesus referred to as the Messiah? What does Messiah mean? Did the Jews at the time believe that two Messiahs were coming? Did they really believe that Jesus was “the” Messiah?

Title: Historical Reminders
Topic: Snapshots of Jesus
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

This week, Mark Lanier COMPLETES his study on Snapshots of Jesus FROM THE BOOK OF MARK with a look at how the Gospel spread like wildfire after the crucifixion of Jesus. He also discusses how people didn’t always do good things in the name of Christianity.

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

Scripture Reference: Mark 8:34-9:1

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark begins this final segment of his lesson with a story from when he was in the fourth grade…

What do we “get” in exchange for our soul? This isn’t a trick question!

New Testament scholar and author, William Lane, once stated: “Jesus was sent to reveal the glory of God in a world whose intoxication with its own glory is well expressed in the thought of gaining the world. For Jesus, this required his submission to the contempt and shame of the cross. Should it require less for us?”

We won’t all die a martyr’s death. But does that mean we should live like we won’t? Think about that one!

Points to Ponder:
Follow in Jesus’ footsteps
Lose yourself and find Christ
Live in focus and be intentional

Scripture Reference: Psalm 49; 1 Thessalonians 1:3-10

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

Scripture Reference: Mark 8:34-9:1

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why didn’t Jesus just put a stop to all the “stuff” that was happening?

Why is our first response to situations to think of ourselves?

Why would anyone give up their own life to follow Jesus? Mark has a fantastic response to this using the words of Jesus!

What does “save” mean in Mark 8:38? Mark uses the Greek word to explain, which is “sozo”, and also uses song lyrics by rapper Eminem.

Remember: We only have one shot at life. How are you spending yours? Are you living for you or are you living for Christ?

Scripture Reference: Mark 5:23, 28; Mark 6:56; 1 Corinthians 15

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Are people desperate for meaning in their life? Are they desperate for more? Mark says: “True Christianity makes no difference in haves or have nots… True Christianity is a calling that breaks down all of the barriers of this world that divide us.”

What does “deny” mean? Mark explains using the Greek word “aparneomai” and a law story.

Why did Peter deny Christ? How did Jesus know? What was Peter’s response to Jesus’ proclamation? Furthermore, why is our first response to situations to think of ourselves?

One more important question: Why didn’t Jesus just put a stop to all the “stuff” that was happening?

Questions/Issues Discussed

Mark reminds us today: “Just being close to Jesus doesn’t change your life. Trusting in Jesus does. Just coming to church doesn’t change your life. Trusting in Jesus does. Just hanging around Christians doesn’t change your life. Trusting in Jesus does. Just reading about Jesus doesn’t change your life. Trusting in Jesus does.”

MIRACLE #3: SICKNESS AND DEATH: Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter (Mark 5:21-43)
Who did Jesus meet on the way to the ruler’s house?
What kind of faith did this woman have?
Did Jesus say anything to this woman to heal her?
What were the disciples’ reaction to this miracle?
What was the role of women back in the day? It wasn’t politically correct, for sure!
How did Jesus treat women? Not the way most men did, for sure!
Yesterday, Mark taught a little bit on the synagogue ruler who asked Jesus to heal his young daughter. What happened when Jesus got to the man’s house?
How did Jesus comfort the father?

Questions/Issues Discussed

Mark begins today’s segment reciting the lyrics from the hymn by Mary Ann Baker “Peace! Be Still!”

MIRACLE #2: DEMONS: Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon (Mark 5:1-20)
Mark recently taught about this miracle in class so he skips over it for the sake of time, but he does urge people to read the passage on their own time.

MIRACLE #3: SICKNESS AND DEATH: Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter (Mark 5:21-43)
After the stormy sea episode, Jesus and the disciples were met by a ruler of the synagogue by the sea. What did this ruler ask of Jesus?
What does the word “saved” mean in this passage?
Who did Jesus meet on the way to the ruler’s house?
What kind of faith did this woman have?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Sometimes we read familiar stories in the Bible and we don’t get all we need from the message. Today, Mark points out some things you may have forgotten or even overlooked from this passage.

MIRACLE #1: NATURE: Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41)
Why were the disciples so scared about the storm?
Did the disciples want Jesus to help them bail out the water? Why didn’t they ask for a miracle instead?
Didn’t the disciples realize who Jesus was? Mark says: “They didn’t have a clue!”
How did Jesus respond to the disciples’ persistence that he wake up? Mark says: “The same story that talks of his humanity, contrasts it to his divinity.”
Mark ends this segment today with a great quote from St. Augustine.

Think on this: God rebukes the storm because He isn’t simply a creature experiencing the winds. He is the Creator of the winds!

Title: What is Your Worldview
Topic: Snapshots of Jesus
Discussed by Pastor Brent Johnson
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

WORLDVIEW: An understanding of the world that informs one’s fundamental beliefs and assumptions, which build a framework of ideas and attitudes about the world and how it works.

This week, CFBC Pastor Brent Johnson subs in for Mark Lanier, continuing in the Snapshots of Jesus series with his lesson on “What is Your Worldview”, focusing on Theism.

He looks at three areas:
Evangelism and our entrance into Heaven
The Kingdom of God
Communing with God

To view Brent Johnson’s video for this lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

COMMUNING WITH GOD:

What are some ways we commune with God?

Why should we be careful about what we pray for?

Why don’t we pray more for spiritual matters?

What did Jesus say about the importance of prayer? Pastor Brent shares a parable from Luke 18:1-8 “The Parable of the Persistent Widow”.

Should we be persistent in prayer? Or do we just need to pray for something one time? Pastor Brent has an interesting answer to this question.

Was Jesus persistent in prayer? Pastor Brent reminds us of Jesus praying in the garden (Matthew 26).

Did Paul ever pray persistently? Pastor Brent uses Paul’s thorn in the flesh as an example (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

Final Thoughts: “We need to be people that are letting the Spirit moves us so they will see what God is doing and they want to be a part of it.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

ENTRANCE TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD:

How do we gain entrance into the Kingdom of God? Pastor Brent read from Luke 4:42-44 yesterday.
Why did Jesus heal people? Was this his primary purpose?
What is our purpose as Christians? Would you be able to list out 5 good things about the Kingdom of God in less than a minute?
What are some requirements to enter the Kingdom of God? (Mark 1:14-15)
How did Jesus share the Gospel? (John 3:8)
If a stranger focused on your life, what effects of God living in you would be easily recognized?

COMMUNING WITH GOD:

What are some ways we commune with God?
Are we all at different points of this journey? Is one path “better” than another?
Why should we be careful about what we pray for? Pastor Brent uses the illustration of a vending machine. When what we wanted gets stuck or we get something else instead, we get upset or disappointed. Why? God always knows what is best!
Why don’t we pray more for spiritual matters? Pastor Brent shares some statistics.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE KINGDOM OF GOD:
The Kingdom of God began the moment He created the world. But why did He have to reintroduce the Kingdom of God to the world? Pastor Brent reminds us of Abraham.

Why did God reveal His laws to Moses? Pastor Brent reminds us that the Mediterranean is the middle of the world and this is where the Promised Land is! How cool is that?

How did Jesus MODEL the Kingdom of God? Pastor Brent reminds us that Jesus was not afraid of causing a ruckus – and we should do the same!

How did Jesus DEFINE the Kingdom of God? (Luke 17:20-21)

What does “Ecclesia” mean? Did Jesus ever talk about this? Is it a Christian term? If not, what was it used for? This is super interesting, so listen close as Pastor Brent explains…

What is the difference between a Christian Worldview and Biblical Worldview?

In this segment today, Pastor Brent discusses a hypothetical “case study” about a young man in his late 20s who did not grow up in church, but decides to visit a church one Sunday. How do the members treat the man? What does he think about the worship and the preaching? What did he learn about “Christianity”? How did this shape his worldview of Christianity?

THE KINGDOM OF GOD:
What is the Kingdom of God?
What is a kingdom?
How do we gain entrance to the Kingdom of God?
How can we commune with God in His Kingdom?
When did the Kingdom of God begin?
Why did God have to reintroduce the Kingdom of God to the world? Pastor Brent reminds us of Abraham.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What factors contribute to our worldview? Have you ever changed your worldview? How did Jesus change peoples’ worldview? Did he have a hard time doing this?

What are the different worldviews? Pastor Brent discusses: Deism, Naturalism, Theism, Existentialism, Postmodernism, and Eastern Pantheistic Monism.

THEISM (the short version)
Prime Reality: There is one true Creator God.
Origin: We were created. We are NOT an accident.
Destiny: We either choose to live with God or reject Him.
Purpose: We are to love God and others.
Morality: God defined what is moral and what is not; we must desire to know what is moral and what is not.

What are some religions that practice Theism? Christian, Islam, Judaism, and Mormonism are just a few. Pastor Brent says: “The question is this: Who is their “god” and what does their “god” tell them is moral?”

What is the difference between a Christian Worldview and Biblical Worldview? Pastor Brent will discuss a hypothetical situation tomorrow…

Day 5

This week, David Capes subs in for Mark Lanier. David is the Director of the Lanier Theological Library.

He looks at three charges leveled against Jesus:
Jesus was a friend of sinners.
Jesus was a Sabbath breaker.
Jesus was in league with the devil.

To view David Capes’ video for this lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

CHARGE #3 AGAINST JESUS: Jesus was in league with the devil. (Mark 3:22-27)

Jesus had been performing many miracles, including casting out demons. Who did the people claim Jesus was – a miracle worker or a demon?

In the parable that Jesus told in response, who was the strongman? David reminisces about Olympics wrestling from years ago…

How can you bind the strongman? (Matthew 12:27-29).

POINTS TO PONDER: WHO IS JESUS?

Jesus was a friend to sinners – and we should be, too.
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath – not a breaker of the Sabbath.
Jesus is taking back the world – we work with him.

Yesterday, David discussed when the Jews began and ended each day, using a great illustration. He also read from the Dead Sea Scrolls.

What is the Mishnah? How many categories of work were included in the Mishnah? David Capes discusses a few of them, which were mainly just daily activities back then – and even many that apply today! He then shares about the first time he moved to Texas when he tried to buy a can opener on a Sunday.

When the Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath, what was his response?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

CHARGE #1 AGAINST JESUS: Jesus was a friend of sinners. (Mark 2:13-17)

What is the difference between “sinners” and “sinners”? To answer this question, David Capes asks another one: “Who makes it to your table?” Think about that for a little bit… Do you have friends who are “sinners” (unbelievers)? When was the last time you shared the Gospel with them? When was the last time you shared a meal with them? When was the last time you prayed for them? How did Jesus respond to the Pharisees accusing him of being a friend to sinners?

CHARGE #2 AGAINST JESUS
: Jesus was a Sabbath breaker. (Mark 2:23-28)

Why were the disciples “working” on the Sabbath? Did the Pharisees again accuse them, including Jesus, of breaking the Sabbath? How did Jesus respond? David Capes reminds us of the 4th Commandment: Honor the Sabbath Day. More on this tomorrow…

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How do you see Jesus? “How we see Jesus is very often a function of our culture,” David says, giving some examples. “But it’s not just about where you are from; it’s about WHEN you are from,” he continues. Click the link above to view some of the pictures he uses; they are pretty funny!

How did Mark (the Gospel writer) see Jesus?

CHARGE #1 AGAINST JESUS
: Jesus was a friend of sinners. (Mark 2:13-17)
What did Jesus tell Levi to do when they met? What was Levi’s profession? When the Pharisees saw Jesus with “sinners”, what did they do? What was Jesus’ response to their accusation?
What is the difference between “sinners” and “sinners”? More on this tomorrow…

Title: Where are You Headed in Life?
Topic: Snapshots of Jesus
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

Mark Lanier continues his series, “Snapshots of Jesus”, discussing the journey of life. Why are the roads we travel important?

Mark travels on three roads in the lesson this week:
The Road/Pathway
The Way of Life
The Way of Salvation

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The Way of Salvation:
Mark 10:52
Mark tells the story of the blind man, Bartimaeus, who called out for help from Jesus. Why did the people tell Bartimaeus to be quiet? Why did Jesus stop by Bartimaeus? Did Jesus know what he wanted? Was Bartimaeus healed both physically and spiritually? What did Bartimaeus do after Jesus healed him? He followed Jesus “on the way”!

The Way of Salvation: Mark 1:2-3
Why did Mark (the disciple) quote Isaiah: “prepare the way of the Lord” and “who will prepare your way”? Why is it so difficult for us to trust God’s plan? Because we are human and He is God! Trust Him!

POINTS TO PONDER:
Life is a journey, so trust God while you follow His way.

Mark travels on three roads in the lesson this week:
The Road/Pathway
The Way of Life
The Way of Salvation

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The Way of Life: Mark 6:8
What did Jesus tell the disciples to take on their “journey”? Do you ever feel helpless and all alone? Mark reminds us that God is with us every step of the way: “It’s a walk of faith. Shake the dust off your feet and keep going.”

The Way of Life:
Mark 8:3
This is the story pretty much every person, especially Christians, knows: Jesus feeds the crowd with a few loaves of bread and fish. The lesson in this passage is: God will meet all of our needs.

The Way of Life: Mark 9:33-34
Why didn’t Jesus want anyone to know that he was traveling through Galilee?
What were the disciples discussing “on the way” to Capernaum?
Remember: The Early Church was once called The Way. The disciples were obviously on the wrong journey at that moment. They were all being arrogant, when they should have been humble.

The Way of Life: Mark 12:14
People asked Jesus if they should pay taxes to Caesar. What was his answer? Was he avoiding the question with his answer? NOPE! Dig deeper and you will see: The way of Christ is the way of God. Listen as Mark explains this…

Questions/Issues Discussed:

PASSAGES CONTAINING THE SON OF MAN
Mark explains that people put these passages into different buckets; he uses three buckets:
Present Activity, Suffering, and Future Vindication. (Mark taught on present activity on Tuesday and suffering on Wednesday.)
Suffering: Mark 8:31; 9:9; 12; 31; 10:33; 45; 14:21; 41
What did Jesus tell the disciples after he returned from a short time of private prayer?
We know the end of the story. We have faith and trust in that. But the people, specifically the disciples, did not know the end. They had a hard time trusting and believing what Jesus was saying. How would YOU have handled that?
Future Vindication: Mark 8:38; 13:26; 14:61-64
What did the high priest ask Jesus? Was he trying to trick him?
What was Jesus’ response?
Mark breaks down each phrase in Mark 14:61-64 into the Greek, explaining the significance.
What did Daniel prophesy about Jesus – the Son of Man?
After hearing Jesus’ proclamation (aka the truth), what did the high priest ask of the people? What was their decision?

Was Jesus confused by the peoples’ unbelief?
Will Jesus ever force his way into someone’s life?
What will happen if we choose the “wrong side”? Mark tells a story from his high school years about a parable a friend told him about heaven…

Scripture Reference: James 2:19

Questions/Issues Discussed:

JESUS IN THE WAR Mark 5:1-20
Why should we know – and live – the Lord’s Prayer?
Mark reminds us that pretty much everything in our world can be used for both good and evil. It’s OUR responsibility to know – and choose – how to use what we have been given. He says: “We do not want spiritual narcissism to control our lives and desires.”
Which “side” are you on? Think about it. Which “side” are you REALLY on?

Scripture Reference: Matthew 6:9-15

DON’T MISS HIM Mark 6:1-6
Did Jesus once again surprise the people with his teachings? Why were they so confused?
Why did the people call Jesus “the son of Mary” and not “the son of Joseph”? This is really interesting! Listen close…

Questions/Issues Discussed:

NOTE: During this segment, Mark uses some disturbing audio that Pastor Jarrett Stephens filmed in India of a woman who was possessed by a demon. Although it has a very good ending, it might be upsetting to some people.

JESUS IN THE WAR Mark 5:1-20

What were the tombs like back in Jesus’ time? Who lived in the tombs?

Why did a man from the tombs approach Jesus?

Did the serpent (Satan) just happen upon Adam and Eve in the Garden? NOPE! Satan – the number one demon – had a purpose from the beginning. Can demons turn what is holy and pure into something perverted? Do demons come to destroy the world? Mark reminds us: “Demons come to destroy the image of God in people.”

Back to the man from the tomb…How did he know who Jesus was? What was his plea?

What did Jesus do to the unclean spirits that were inside of the man?
