Title: Poor No More: Rethinking Dependency
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Peter Cove
with America Works (www.americaworks.com)

Part 1 of 2

There are three times as many people in America collecting disability benefits than there were in 1990. Peter Cove, the founder of America Works, believes that forty percent of these individuals could be working if given the opportunity. But, how is this achievable?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

America is so deep in red ink, why should we even bother?

How much is currently given to SSI recipients yearly?

Many people currently receiving benefits would once again join the workforce if only given the chance. What can we do to help?

If the government reduced the disability budget by a mere one percent, would that decrease the red ink? The Penny Plan…

What is the “Ticket To Work” program? Listen in to the next segment as he continues to explain how this program works.

Title: From Prosperity to Poverty
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Chuck DeVore
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)

The Texas Public Policy Foundation is hosting a “Prosperity and Poverty Summit” in Austin on Wednesday, October 22 from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm at the Stephen F. Austin InterContinental Hotel. Chuck DeVore is the Vice President of Policy for the Texas Public Policy Foundation. He says the challenge with poverty is not just about material need.

One starting point is employment, but it is only one part of a big puzzle. Mr. DeVore points out that most states where poverty is the highest, there are more socialist-type programs. When you replace GOD with government, things begin to unravel.

Another factor that has caused the rise in poverty is the breakup of the traditional American family. 40.7 percent of all children in America are born out of wedlock. This should be a wake-up call for everyone. On the other hand, immigrants to America (whatever ethnicity) are one-half less likely to give birth out of wedlock.

It’s like a vicious circle.

Chuck DeVore will be discussing proven policy initiatives that help lift individuals and families out of poverty at the “Prosperity and Poverty Summit”. He will also compare the difference in policy and government programs in twelve of the biggest states with their rate of unemployment and poverty.

For example, when the government reports that the “official poverty rate” has decreased, they lump all cities together. However, the cost of living in Brooklyn in vastly differently than in Lubbock. This is how the government convinces low-information voters that their programs work, when in reality, they cause more poverty, more unemployment, and more destruction.

Consider attending the “Prosperity and Poverty Summit” in Austin on Wednesday, October 22 from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm at the Stephen F. Austin InterContinental Hotel hosted by the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Find more information at www.TexasPolicy.com.

Title: The War on Poverty - It's Not what we Expected.
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Rachel Sheffield
with The Heritage Foundation (www.Heritage.org)

Part 1 of 2

FACT: $22 TRILLION has been spent battling the War on Poverty during the last 50 years. This is 3 times MORE than the United States has spent on ALL of our military wars combined since the beginning of our history.

What do we have to show for it?

I believe LBJ had good intentions when addressed the issues driving people into poverty, but the system has become so twisted and corrupt that even some on the left are beginning to question the validity. I really don’t believe that anyone could foresee the mess we are in now, 50 years later.

Rachel Sheffield is a policy analyst with the DeVos Center for Religion & Civil Society at The Heritage Foundation, found at www.Heritage.org Her area of expertise is welfare, marriage and the family, and education.

Listen in as Rachel shares how much Obama wants to spend on the War on Poverty over the next ten years! (HINT: It’s a lot! A whole, whole lot!)

Also, what kind of “extras” do the poor have today? Are they all necessary? Do middle-to-upper class citizen have these “extras”? I know many people far above the poverty line who go without a lot of “extras” these days to make ends meet.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - The War on Poverty - It's Not what we Expected.
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Rachel Sheffield
with The Heritage Foundation (www.Heritage.org)

Since the War on Poverty began over 50 years ago, the poverty rate has remained, for the most part, the same. There has been some fluctuation here and there, but it really hasn’t changed drastically. Why, then, are so many more Americans on government aid? Well, the answer is a little complex. Rachel Sheffield has researched this extensively and she has some answers.

At the height of the recession in 2009, 96% of parents stated that their children never went hungry. This isn’t meant to downplay the hardships that so many families face every day. However, compared to the rest of the world’s poor, America’s “poor” have it pretty good, especially when you consider all the “extras” they are blessed with like TV’s, play stations, and smart phones.

Rachel Sheffield says that the single most important factor in assuring your children will not grow up in poverty is an intact family. Maybe if we had spent $22 TRILLION on strengthening the traditional American family instead of government programs for the poor, we wouldn’t be in this mess today.

It’s time for pastors and community leaders to step up to the plate and promote the family. It’s time our government leaders, from the City Council to the Oval Office, realize that we cannot keep throwing money at these programs, expecting different results than we’ve experienced over the last 50 years.

You can find Rachel Sheffield’s article on this issue at www.Heritage.org.

Title: How Do We Win the War on Poverty?
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Shelby Emmett
with Project 21 (www.NationalCenter.org)

Part 1 of 2

A recent Rasmussen survey revealed that likely voters trust Republicans more on 9 out of 15 issues. That’s good news, right? Well, not really. The issues which voters are more likely to trust Democrats include: the environment, social security, healthcare, establishing a national energy policy, and education. Where did we go wrong?

Today’s interview with Shelby Emmett is focused on The War on Poverty. What do we have to show after 50 years and trillions of dollars, when over 70% of black children do not live in a 2-parent household and millions and millions of families are on food stamps?

Shelby says that one problem with the government’s WOP programs is that they are creating policies to deal with where people are today and not where they need to be. For example, for schools who receive extra funding for children who are in poverty, those children must remain in poverty or the school doesn’t get the extra money.

Poor people are told by the government that they are victims of their circumstances and, therefore, deserve free food and shelter and help to pay their bills. This creates more voters and more dependency. The cycle just keeps repeating itself. There is no end.

Listen in as Shelby discusses the black family 50 years ago compared to today and why LBJ really began his War on Poverty.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - It's All About Perspective
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Shelby Emmett
with Project 21 (www.NationalCenter.org)

Shelby’s grandfather was a big influencer in her life. He used to tell her: “Shelby, the only things you are entitled to are to breathe and to pay taxes. That’s it. Everything else is a luxury.” Life is hard, but it’s your choice what you do with it. Nothing is going to be handed to you on a silver platter. You don’t deserve anything unless you work hard and earn it.

Shelby comes from a single-parent household. She worked as many as three jobs to pay her way through college. She never expected the government to give her anything, and still doesn’t. She says it all comes down to individual ambition.

Listen in to hear more of Shelby’s personal story, how she overcome every obstacle to be where she is today, and gives some encouragement to parents.

Title: Independence or In Dependence? The War on Poverty.
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Dr. Patrick Fagan
with Marripedia www.marripedia.org

Part 1 of 3

Fighting poverty has been an excuse to expand bureaucracy for decades. In fact, America now has over 92 programs dedicated to the epidemic.

Epidemic. That is what it is. We have more people – individuals and families alike – receiving government assistance than ever before.

What started out as a simple, quick fix, has now become a way of life for so many. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) wants to know what Americans have to show for it. Listen in as Dr. Patrick Fagan, with the Family Research Council, explains.

Food stamps, Medicare, Social Security, and housing assistance, while well-intentioned, aren't solving the problem. Rep. Ryan says, “Federal programs are not only failing to address the problem, they are also, in some significant respects, making it worse."

For too long,” Ryan continues, "we have measured compassion by how much we spend instead of how many people get out of poverty.

Well, in my opinion, spending $800 BILLION dollars every year on anti-poverty programs is far too much money to spend on a broken and battered system. But, how do we fix it? Is it too late to even bother?

Dr. Fagan says financial breakdown isn’t the issue. The real issue is…….Listen in to find out!

Title: Part 3 of 3 - Independence or In Dependence? The War on Poverty.
Topic: War on Poverty
Discussed by Dr. Patrick Fagan
with Marripedia www.marripedia.org

Conservatives like Rick Santorum understand that reducing poverty is as simple as this: "Work, graduate from high school, and get married before you have children."  Do that and your chances of ending up in poverty are about 2 percent.

It’s time for Congress to make the connection between America's financial mess and our cultural one. While the left looks for the answer to poverty in welfare programs, our nation's greatest hope continues to be in the home. What is necessary is a married mother and father -- an advantage only 45% of this generation enjoy.

Listen in as Dr. Fagan concludes his interview with how we can all help right what’s wrong in America.

Title: War on Poverty Did More Harm than Good
Topic: War on Poverty
Written by Krista Kafer
with www.coloradofutureproject.com

Today, the U.S. has spent $20 trillion on well over 100 anti-poverty programs supplying cash, subsidies, and other benefits. The poverty rate, however, barely budged.

The legacy of the War on Poverty provides a clear answer: Welfare smothers industriousness and personal responsibility, the very keys to economic mobility. Less than three percent of full-time workers live below the poverty line. The average poor family with children works 800 hours a year, or about sixteen hours a week.

Jesus said there will always be poor among us. Does that mean we should not try to help the less fortunate?

How much “help” is too much? We should help those in need, but we have spent (wasted) about $19.8 Trillion dollars trying to lift those out of poverty.

We have only created a state of dependency and destroyed the family structure.

We also need to encourage blacks to become involved in politics – the “right” kind of politics. Show them the TRUTH about the Democratic Party and how they are ruining America.

As an assistant secretary of labor under LBJ, Daniel Patrick Moynihan warned that the premise and concept of the War on Poverty would be detrimental to black America. The infamous split between the races that Moynihan predicted created a deficit between white and black in key areas such as education, income, and net worth.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.
