Title: The Patient Survival Handbook
Topic: Medical Errors
Discussed by Rick Stone
with Rick Stone (www.SynensisHealth.com)
Part 1 of 2
Cancer and heart
disease are the top two killers in the US. Can you guess the third?
Car accidents? Murders? Diabetes? Nope, nope, and nope. The third
largest cause of death in the US is Death by Hospital.
Rick Stone and others at Synensis Health exist to help hospitals obtain
and retain a zero injury goal. Rick says, “There are almost 400,000
preventable patient deaths every year in the US.” That is just the deaths!
This number does not include infections caught while in the hospital, accidental
falls, wrong medication given, and other errors. What do you think that number
is? Listen in!
The fact of the matter is mistakes happen. But the situation could be a whole,
whole, whole lot better! Physicians, nurses, and support staff really do go
above and beyond to make you, the patient, as comfortable as possible in their
goal to for you to be able to go home. Rick calls them “Heroes” and
they are. People make too many assumptions and come to a conclusion too quickly
when errors occur.
Rick says, “We need to think of ourselves as part of the care team, not just
someone who is passively receiving medical care.”

with Rick Stone (www.SynensisHealth.com)
In this second

His co-author’s father was diagnosed with cancer and….Well, just listen in to
hear the sad story.
Rick also explains the various ways patients and their families can become
involved in their care. Being actively engaged is such an important part of the
recovery process. “Ask questions,” Rick says, “and never assume
that what you’re being told is the absolute truth….And have an advocate there
with you to be part of the team. It will maximize your safety.”

Title: Big Medicine’s Push For a Shield From Their Own Mistakes
Topic: Medical Errors
Discussed by Andy Cochran
with The 7th Amendment Advocate (www.7thAmendmentAdvocate.org)
Too many Americans are injured by just a few doctors who continue to make mistakes.
Why do the Medical Review Boards in various states hesitate to discipline their own?
Did the various lawsuit reform groups just spontaneously appear in various states organized by individuals or was there a planned movement by Karl Rove and his big business allies? If so, then why?

Title: One of The Most Dangerous Places In America: Hospitals
Topic: Medical Errors
Discussed by Andy Cochran
with The 7th Amendment Advocate (www.7thAmendmentAdvocate.org)
Segment 1 of 2
Just one preventable death is one too many, but up to 100,000 Each Year? Why
are bad doctors still practicing medicine? Andy Cochran joins us discussing two
recent Wall Street Journal articles. According to a two-pronged survey of
operating-room and critical-care nurses conducted by their professional
associations and VitalSmarts, 84% reported working with people who take
potentially dangerous shortcuts with 26% saying shortcuts had caused harm to
patients. Is now the time to shield health care providers from liability for
their preventable mistakes? More information can be found at

How to increase the
quality of health care in America: revoke the licenses of bad doctors.
Andy Cochran continues discussing two recent Wall Street Journal Articles. Andy
adds a startling statistic: 5.1% of doctors account for 54.2% of medical
malpractice payouts. Of the 35,000 doctors with 2 or more payouts, only 7.6% had
been disciplined; only 13% with 5 or more payouts have been disciplined. Why are
patients not protected by stiffer sanctions? Why do good doctors have to
subsidize the actions of bad doctors? Is the solution a “national shield of
protection” against malpractice lawsuits? Send us your comments by using our

Title: Thousands upon Thousands of preventable medical errors occur every year
Topic: Medical Errors
Discussed by Mary Alice McLarty
with Mary Alice McLarty (www.MaryAlice.com)
Segment 1 of 2
Medical Errors are the 5th leading cause of death in America each
year. “Never-Events”, preventable medical errors, occur thousands
upon thousands of times and many go unreported. Why? Mary Alice McLarty joins us
today discussing events that should have never happened but are happening far
too often. April’s issue of Health Affairs is reporting that medical
errors may be occurring as much as 10 times more often than what is being
reported. Is shielding healthcare providers from liability from their mistakes
the only solution? More information can be found at
www.MaryAlice.com.

Some are arguing
that if the federal government would simply place a shield of protection over
and around healthcare providers, Americans would be better served at less cost.
But is this a good idea? Mary Alice McLarty continues discussing “never-events”,
events that should have never happened but are happening far too often. From
operating on the wrong elbow or kidney, to giving the wrong medications, or
simply ignoring the alarm bells, the patience safety should come first. More
information can be found at www.MaryAlice.com.

Title: Hospital patients die after receiving contaminated intravenous supplements
Topic: Medical Errors
Discussed by Jere Beasley
with Jere Beasley (www.BeasleyAllen.com)
It is estimated that up to 100,000 Americans die
every year from preventable medical errors. Nine died in Alabama
hospitals after receiving contaminated intravenous supplements. Some argue that
if we just shield health care providers from lawsuits, we can solve the health
care crisis in America. By limiting liability will patients be safer? Will
preventable medical errors be reduced? More information can be found at
www.BeasleyAllen.com.
