Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens concludes the Acts Forward sermon series this week. He hopes that you have gained three things: devotion to the church, desperation for God, and dedication to take the Gospel to others.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 27-28

Questions/Issues Discussed:

LESSON #4 FROM ACTS
: Sharing the love of Jesus vocally and showing the love of Jesus tangibly helps change the world.
Pastor Jarrett reminds us that mission work doesn’t necessarily mean a trip across the world. Mission work is everywhere! He also shares about a strip center he has been praying over because he believes CFBC could use the space for mission work…

LESSON #5 FROM ACTS:
Keep the main thing – the Gospel – the main thing.
How does the Gospel keep us banded together?
How can we use our differences to make our church and the Kingdom better?

LESSON #6 FROM ACTS:
Be aggressive in spreading the message of the Gospel.
Why was Paul so aggressive when he preached? Why wasn’t he afraid of the consequences?
Why should we support mission work financially? Pastor Jarrett shares a story about flying over Romania…

NEW APP:
Pray.com

LESSON #7 FROM ACTS:
Friendships with people and faithfulness to Jesus are what matters most in life. (Acts 20:24; 2 Timoth 4:7)
Who are your people? You don’t need a bunch! But you need someone to walk this Christian life with.

APPLICATION:

Keep going forward in the name of Jesus for the souls of men and for the glory of God.

Scripture Passage: Acts 27-28

Questions/Issues Discussed:

LESSON #1 FROM ACTS
: God uses ordinary people filled with the Holy Spirit to accomplish his purposes.
Pastor Jarrett shares a quote from a speaker at a conference he recently attended (he doesn’t mention the name): “Never think you are great! You are not great. The gift God has given you is great. It’s very true. Never get over the fact that God chooses to use you!”

LESSON #2 FROM ACTS:
Persecution, suffering, and trying times are a normal part of the Christian journey. (John 16:33)
Remember:
God uses these times to stretch our faith and create dependance on Him.
God uses these times to advance the Gospel.
God uses these times to teach us and conform us to Christ.
God uses these times to grow our prayer life and encourage others who are following us and looking to us.

LESSON #3 FROM ACTS:
The Church is worth giving your life to. (Acts 2:42-47)
Why is it important to belong to a local church? Pastor Jarrett says: “The local church is home base for missions around the world. It should be part of the foundation for a godly marriage and helping you to raise godly children.”

LESSON #4 FROM ACTS:
Sharing the love of Jesus vocally and showing the love of Jesus tangibly helps change the world.
Why should we be involved in mission work? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that mission work doesn’t necessarily mean a trip across the world. Mission work is everywhere! He also shares about a strip center he has been praying over because he believes CFBC could use the space for mission work…

Day 3

Scripture Passage: Acts 27-28

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Paul finally got to Rome after being in Malta for three months after the shipwreck. He was looking forward to seeing the people of the church. But what actually happened, though, when he got to Rome? When was he finally able to see his friends from the church? (Acts 28:16-17a)

Paul never shied away from sharing the Gospel, no matter the cost. Did he do the same in Rome? Was he hopeful that the people would receive the Gospel? (Acts 28:24-28)

Pastor Jarrett passionately discusses the two types of people in the pews at churches across the world: those that receive the Gospel and those that reject it. He wrote this in his Bible: “A prayer for Champion Fores: Lord, that we would never hear and NOT understand or see and NOT perceive. Don’t ever let our hearts grow dull.”

Why does the Book of Acts end so abruptly? Does it end with the same message that it began with? (Acts 1:8; Acts 28:30-31)

Is there a written record of what Paul did after he left Rome? Pastor Jarrett shares some of the theories and the fact that Paul was ultimately beheaded by Emperor Nero.

Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett continues to share lessons we learn from the Book of Acts.

Scripture Passage: Acts 27-28

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why did God send an angel to Paul with a specific message? What was the message? (Acts 27:21-26)

Did the people take heed to the message Paul was given from God through the angel? Did they survive? What happened to the ship? Where did the people go when they abandoned the ship? Did the natives welcome them? (Acts 28:1-2)

What’s the deal with a viper biting Paul? How did Paul react to the viper biting him? What did the natives think of Paul surviving the snake bite? (Acts 28:3-6)

How long did Paul stay in Malta? Did he heal people while he was there?

Did Paul finally get to Rome? Was he looking forward to seeing the people of the church? What actually happened, though, when he got to Rome?

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

Scripture Passage
: Acts 22-26

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What was Paul’s fifth and final response in defense of his faith? (Acts 26:24-32)
How did King Agrippa respond to Paul’s testimony?

Like Paul, be ready with this defense:
What was your life like before Christ?
How did you meet Jesus?
How has your life changed since meeting Jesus?

Be prepared. (1 Peter 3:15)
Be faithful. Trust and entrust.
Be thankful. Pastor Jarrett reminds us: “We know the end of the story. Paul didn’t…We don’t have to have it all figured out.”

Do you think that Paul ever felt alone – like God had abandoned him?
Was God actually doing an amazing work in Paul’s life during his time in prison?
Pastor Jarrett reminds us: “He is purifying your faith, which the Scripture says is the most important thing to conform you to the image of Christ. And sometime that can’t happen apart from any other way than waiting on him…Waiting time is not wasted time.
When Felix left Rome, a man named Festus took his place. Why did he travel to Jerusalem and what did the religious leaders ask him to do? What was Festus’ response to the religious leaders? (Acts 25:3-5)

INQUISITION FOUR:

What were the religious leaders accusing Paul of?
Why did Festus ask Paul to come face his accusers?
What was Paul’s response in defense of his faith? (Acts 25:11-12)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

SEVEN SIMILARITIES BETWEEN JESUS AND PAUL GOING TO JERUSALEM:
NOTE: The first three similarities were discussed on Wednesday
.
1. Both had their mind set on going to Jerusalem: No one was going to stop them! Luke 9:51
2. Both were told by friends NOT to go to Jerusalem: Matthew 16:21-22
3. Both knew they were going to suffer when they arrived in Jerusalem: Matthew 20:17-19
4. Both came to Jerusalem with friends: Pastor Jarrett thinks this similarity is very interesting, especially since both men WANTED their friends to be with them.
5. Both were welcomed upon their arrival in Jerusalem: Acts 21:17-20a; Luke 19:36-38
6. Both experienced conflict in the Temple in Jerusalem: Pastor Jarrett reminds us that both men were accused of things they never did. Acts 21:27-31; Acts 21:37-22:2
7. Both were seized and arrested in Jerusalem: Acts 21:31-35

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why were some people, including the disciples, telling Paul NOT to go to Jerusalem?

Who was Agabus? How did he know Paul was in danger? Why did he offer his own warning? This might seem really strange to us, but remember it was the Holy Spirit speaking through Agabus!

But wait! Didn’t the Holy Spirit tell Paul to GO to Jerusalem? Why would the Holy Spirit tell Paul one thing and the disciples and Agabus another thing? Who was right?

Title: What Really Matters
Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Can you imagine if you had everything you want in life? Remember: We only have one chance at life. Make it matter!

Pastor Jarrett’s sermon this week focuses on Paul’s life and ministry and how he lived his life every day – every moment – for God, spreading His message of love to every person he met.

What are YOU doing?

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 20:1-38

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett read from Acts 20-18-35 and discussed Characteristics of Elders/Leaders in the Church. Click here  and fast-forward to the 1-hour mark to view the full list.

Today, he reminds us that most people who attend church or who are Christians are not Elders in the church BUT we have the same responsibilities! He says that Acts 20:24 should be our life verse: “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”

WHAT REALLY MATTERS: Faithfulness to Jesus
What is your calling?
Are you being faithful to Jesus with your talents and gifts?
Are you being faithful to Jesus during the rough times – or just the good times?

When the people realized Paul would never be back to them, how did they react?

APPLICATION:

Do what you have to do to build friendships and be faithful to Jesus.

HOW?

Make friendships and time alone with God, your best friend, a priority.

Hymn of Invitation: Believe for It (CeCe Winans)

NOTE: If you do not belong to a church, find one! If you do belong to a church, find a small group, too! Friendships are important!

: Friendships with People
Who were Paul’s friends? Why did he treasure friendships?
Who are YOUR friends? Who do YOU treasure? Pastor Jarrett offers some startling statistics about loneliness in America…
Why did God hardwire humans for relationships?
Are you a friend of God’s? Did you know that God wants to be YOUR friend?
Pastor Jarrett reads from Acts 20:3-5 and explains the importance of the people and places mentioned. Were these Paul’s friends? Why were they so willing to go anywhere with Paul – even to prison?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

REVIEW:
Why was Paul in Ephesus for three years?

What churches were planted while he was there?

What books of the Bible were written at that time?

Did ALL of Aisia really hear the Gospel because of Paul’s preaching and teaching?

Why did Paul leave Ephesus? Where did he go?

Why was Paul collecting an offering? Who was the money for?

Why was Paul so eager to get to Rome? What happened on the way there? Pastor Jarrett reads from Acts 20:3-5 and explains the importance of the people and places mentioned.

Title: The Reality of Evil and Spiritual Warfare
Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

When was the last time you heard a sermon on the reality of evil and spiritual warfare? Spiritual Warfare – yes. The reality of evil – probably not often.

Pastor Jarrett Stephens believes it is a topic that is extremely important and every Christian should know more about it. This is a fabulous sermon and I encourage you to check out his sermon notes here

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 18:8-20

Questions/Issues Discussed:

APPLICATION #1:
Be Ready. (Discussed on Thursday)
How does a sermon on spiritual warfare actually help us?
Why do we allow bad things to distract us?
Until God returns and rids the world of evil once and for all, what will you be doing?

APPLICATION #2:
Be Wise.
Do you go looking for trouble? Remember: Satan is a super powerful and smart foe!
Does the enemy have plans for our lives? Pastor Jarrett says: “Don’t give the devil an inch, because if you do, he’ll bust down the door!”
Should we “talk” to Satan? Or should we petition Jesus on our behalf?

APPLICATION #3:
Be Armed.
Why should we be prepared with armor in the name of the Lord?
What is the “Full Armor of God”? Is it really important to our Christian walk? You bet!

Scripture References: Ephesians 6:13-18

Scripture Passage: Acts 18:8-20

Questions/Issues Discussed:

God performed extraordinary miracles through Paul and Peter:
Both healed people who were handicapped.
Both cast out demons.
Both raised the dead.
Both were released from prison in a supernatural way.

What did Paul write to the Corinthian Church about miracles?

Why does the book of Acts describe the activities (miracles and healings) in such detail?

What happened in Acts 19:13-16 with a demon? This is an interesting event that proves that evil exists in this world!

Does this demonic activity exist in America? You bet! But if it does, why don’t we see it? Pastor Jarrett says: “Demonic activity is more discreet here in the US, because Satan is no fool. We’re lulled to complacency and sleep in our idolatry.”

What is the purpose of miracles?

APPLICATION #1: Be Ready.
How does a sermon on spiritual warfare actually help us?

Scripture Passage: Acts 18:8-20

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is the significance of the Hall of Tyrannus? How long did Paul stay in Ephesus preaching in the Hall of Tyrannus?

Pastor Jarrett discusses the dangers of our instant gratification society. He says: “Sometimes we take this mindset into our spiritual lives. We think if I read the Bible consistently for a week, I ought to be growing in holiness. I ought to be a spiritual giant by now!”

Did Paul understand that it takes time to develop spiritual habits? Did his dedication pay off?

What are YOU doing to spread the love of God and the Truth of the Gospel? Pastor Jarrett says: “We have to do everything we can while we can because the clock is ticking!”

Did God perform extraordinary miracles through Paul? More on this tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett compares Paul and Peter…

Scripture Passage: Acts 18:8-20

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett reminds us of some of Paul’s background and time in Ephesus for his third missionary journey: Why did Paul spend so much time in Ephesus? Remember: Paul wrote two letters to the Corinthian church in Ephesus. Was Ephesus a “dark city”?  G. Campbell Morgan wrote: “The atmosphere of the city was electric with sorcery and incantations, with exorcists, with all kinds of magical imposters.”

Who was the goddess, Diana? Pastor Jarrett shares how long it took to make the temple dedicated to her. You can actually travel to see its ruins today.

Why is it important to plant churches in the “dark cities” – especially when the occult is present?

What did Paul always do first when he visited a city or town?

How can unbelief harden our hearts? Pastor Jarrett says: “The more you say ‘NO’ to the voice of God, the harder your heart gets.”

Scripture Passage
: Acts 18:8-20

Questions/Issues Discussed:

FACT #1 ABOUT SPIRITUAL WARFARE: We struggle with real evil.
Does Satan manifest himself in our world today? Pastor Jarrett says: “Just look around!”
Did God “create” evil? This is a loaded question, right? Pastor Jarrett does a great job of explaining why God is NOT the creator of evil.
What is the difference between moral evil and natural evil?

Scripture Reference: Romans 1

FACT #2 ABOUT SPIRITUAL WARFARE: We have a real enemy.
What are the different names of the enemy found in the Bible?
Does Satan really want to kill us?
What did Paul write about the enemy? (Ephesians 6:12)
Who are Satan’s demonic forces? What is their main objective?
Was Satan a created being? Pastor Jarrett again has a great explanation for this…
Should we fear the enemy?

Scripture References: John 10:10; 1 Peter 5:8; 2 Corinthians 11:14; Ephesians 2:2; 1 John 4:4

FACT #3 ABOUT SPIRITUAL WARFARE: We are in a real war.
If the enemy is invisible, is the war invisible? Pastor Jarrett says: “There is a war taking place all around us. And just because it’s invisible, don’t think for a moment that it doesn’t exist! That type of thinking can get us in some real trouble.” He then rapid-fires some great Scripture passages that address the spiritual warfare we face as Christians.

Title: Clarity
Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

What is clarity? How do we make clear to people what we are trying to convey, whether it be to our children, co-workers, or even unbelievers? Pastor Jarrett Stephens believes CLARITY is essential when talking about Jesus. His theological message this week will focus on salvation, baptism, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 18:24-19:10

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why is baptism required AFTER salvation? Pastor Jarrett says: “If you get in the water and go through the ordinance of baptism and you’re not saved, you didn’t get baptized – you took a bath!” Amen!

CLARITY ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT:

Is speaking in tongues evidence of salvation? Pastor Jarrett uses four different passages in Acts to explain why this is NOT true, saying: “Speaking in tongues is not evidence of salvation. It was, in these specific texts, evidence of an authentic move of God.”

Theologian John Stott said this: “The norm of Christian experience, then, is a cluster of four things: repentance, faith in Jesus, water baptism, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Though the perceived order may vary a little, the four belong together and are universal in Christian initiation. The laying on of Apostolic hands, however, together with tongue-speaking and prophesying, were special to Ephesus, as to Samaria, in order to demonstrate visibly and publicly that particular people groups were incorporated into Christ by the Spirit; the New Testament does not universalize them. There are no Samaritans or disciples of John the Baptist left in the world today.”

Scripture Passage: Acts 18:24-19:10

Questions/Issues Discussed:

CLARITY ABOUT SALVATION:

What is the only way to salvation?
What did Peter and others preach about salvation?
Back to Apollos… How did he learn about the death and resurrection of Jesus? How did he know to put his faith and trust in Jesus?
Why didn’t the men who followed John the Baptist realize what real baptism was?

Scripture References: Acts 15:6-11; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 John 5:11-12; John 14:7

CLARITY ABOUT BAPTISM:

Why does Pastor Jarrett compare John the Baptist to a Duck Dynasty character?
What did Jesus’ disciples preach about baptism?
Why did Apollos only know of John the Baptist’s baptism?
Do we know if Apollos was baptized by emersion?
Why did the followers of John the Baptist get baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus?
Why do Baptists have such specific baptism rules?
What did Jesus preach about baptism?

Scripture References: Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16; John 1:31-33

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Who was Apollo? Did he have a teachable spirit? Pastor Jarrett shares about a preaching professor who attended his previous church and gave him some great advice.

Why did Paul go to Ephesus?
Why did Paul ask the people (the disciples) there if they had heard about the Holy Spirit and baptism? What was their response?
Why did Paul baptize these men?

Why does Pastor Jarrett believe that what we learn and study about the Early Church is “descriptive”, not “prescriptive”? Listen as he explains what he means by this and also reminds us why we should base our belief on ALL of Scripture, not just a verse or two.

CLARITY ABOUT SALVATION:

Is it important for churches to go “deep and wide”? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that devotion, prayer, worship, preaching, and small groups are all important.

Who was Apollos?
How did he learn about Jesus?
Did he know a lot about Jesus?
Was he excited about Jesus?
Why did Priscilla and Aquila pull him aside to “explain to him the way of God more accurately”? (Acts 18:26) Pastor Jarrett spends several minutes speaking about the significance of this…

Do you ever want to do something, but you get an uneasy feeling? That’s the Holy Spirit!

Do you ever feel awkward sharing the Gospel? We all feel that way sometimes! Pastor Scott shares about a new app called “Life on Mission” created by the North American Mission Board. Click here for more information and to download the app.

KEEP PURSUING JESUS THROUGH HIS WORD.

Will every person see Jesus in a dream like Paul?
Did Paul only receive his guidance and commands from God through dreams?
If Paul didn’t have a “Bible”, how did he receive his commands and guidance?

TAKE OPPOSITION IN STRIDE.

Did Jesus promise an easy life as a Christian? Or did he warn of opposition?
Paul had already been persecuted many times; he expected to be persecuted again. What was different when he was brought before the tribunal in Corinth?
Sosthenes was the leader of the synagogue. Why did the tribunal beat him?
Do you ever wonder why people reject the Gospel? Why do people get so offensive about the thought of a loving savior named Jesus?

Paul was a smart guy. In fact, he was a really smart guy. However, he didn’t trust in his own intellect. Instead, he relied on God’s wisdom and guidance. Why did he write to the Corinthians about this?

Were the Corinthians guilty of acting “spiritually superior”? Were they, in fact, filled with sin? Scripture Passage: Acts 17:16-34

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What does “Athens” mean? Was Athens a God-worshipping city? Or was it a “god-worshipping” city? Xenophon, a Greek writer, a disciple of Socrates, wrote: “Athens was one great altar, one great offering, to the gods.”

Paul arrived in Athens a broken and bruised man – physically. How was he spiritually? Why did he go directly to the synagogue? What did he find there? What did he do at the marketplace?

Paul was eager to speak to the people about Jesus everywhere he went – even when they rejected him. Pastor Jarrett shares a story about a man he met in India who had hundreds of “gods” in his store and he was eager to talk about them. What was their purpose? Were the “gods” doing their “job”?

What are some idols people worship today? Are you sharing how Jesus is so much better than those idols? Pastor Jarrett says: “Just because we don’t have temples and little statues, don’t think for a moment that our world is not full of idolators.”

Day 1

Are you eager to speak about Jesus? Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues in the Acts Forward series with encouragement as we seek to gain the knowledge we need to be eager to speak to others about Jesus.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 17:16-34

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett begins the sermon by reminiscing about the very first sermon he preached when he was only 17 years old. He says: “It was horrible!” But it was also great… He also talks about a few other times he was eager to speak, but also very nervous.

What was the vision Paul had in Athens? Pastor Jarrett gives a run-through of the events and reminds us that Athens was flush with “gods” and pagan and devil worship.

with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues in the Acts Forward series with encouragement that we can all use as we “Point People to Jesus”.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 17:1-21

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett says: “We live in an Athenian world…people following their own little gods, doing their own little thing. The most effective way we can point them to Jesus is to be able to talk with them about the truth of God’s Word and why it’s a greater truth and more objective truth than anything they are ascribing to.”

APPLICATION: If we seek to know the Scripture like Paul and examine the Scripture like the Bereans, then we will be able to point people to Jesus in an effective way.

Day 3

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues in the Acts Forward series with encouragement that we can all use as we “Point People to Jesus”.

Scripture Passage: Acts 17:1-21

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why is it important to give financially to your church? Pastor Jarrett says: “If you look at it as building enhancements or carpet or paint, then you’re looking in the weeds.”

Why did Paul and Silas go to Berea? How were they received there?

Side Note: Why are many churches called “Berean”?

Pastor Jarrett uses the illustration of a hand to show how we should meditate, memorize, study, read, and hear God’s Word. He says: “When we read the Bible, it reads us!”

When the Jews found Pual and Silas in Berea, what did they do? Where did Paul go afterward? Pastor Jarrett points out that Paul went where the people were. Are you?

Scripture References: 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Timothy 3:15-16

Scripture Passage: Acts 17:1-21

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Did Paul know the bigger picture?

Why were some of the Jews jealous of Paul? What did they do to find Paul?

Side Note: Is your church turning the community – the world – upside down for Jesus?

Pastor Jarrett points out that it had been a mere 20 years since the death and resurrection of Jesus when the Early Church was on fire for the Gospel! He also points out that now we hear more about scandals, division, and compromise than we do about the love of God.

Paul had been to many towns. His message was not always well-received. What was so different in Thessalonica?

Why did Paul and Silas go to Berea? How were they received there?

Scripture Passage: Acts 17:1-21

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why did the Jews have a hard time wrapping their heads around Paul’s message?

How could Paul continue to preach the Gospel and the love of Christ after all he had suffered? Pastor Jarrett admits that he would have a hard time!

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM PAUL ABOUT PERSEVERANCE:

Don’t give up so easily when things don’t go your way.
Don’t get bent out of shape when reality doesn’t line up with your expectations.
Stay faithful to Jesus even when it’s difficult.
Stay focused on Christ even when it “appears” that God has forgotten you. Remember: He will NEVER forget you!

Did Paul know the bigger picture? Pastor Jarrett shares about the death of a friend from Dallas who was always pointing people to Jesus.

Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Scott Riling

Day 5

Pastor Scott Riling continues in the Acts Forward series this week with a look at beginning of the second missionary journey of Paul. The journey did NOT start out well for him, but God had big plans.

Find Pastor Scott Riling’s sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 16:16-40

Questions/Issues Discussed:

A PHILIPPIAN JAILER
(Acts 16:25-40)
Did Paul and Silas know that the jailer would be saved while they were in prison?
What happened when Paul and Silas sang and praised Jesus in prison?
Did the prisoners stay or run for their lives when the earthquake occurred?
Why did the jailer want to be saved? How did Paul and Silas respond?
Did others in the jailer’s house believe, too?
When Paul and Silas were told they were free to go, what did they do?

Pastor Riling reminds us today that there is nothing – absolutely nothing – that you could ever do to make God turn His back on you. There is always room at His table and in His arms.

Day 4

Pastor Scott Riling continues in the Acts Forward series this week with a look at beginning of the second missionary journey of Paul. The journey did NOT start out well for him, but God had big plans.

Find Pastor Scott Riling’s sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 16:16-40

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Yesterday, Pastor Riling discussed some Scriptures dealing with spiritual warfare, reminding us that GOD breaks our chains. GOD battles for us.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Do not understand the devil and take him lightly. 2 Corinthians 2:10-11; 2 Corinthians 11:14; Acts 19
You do not have authority over the devil – Christ does! Matthew 28:18; Matthew 10:1; John 14:17; 1
Submit to Christ because He is your protector and your defender. Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 6:10-11; James 4:7

THE ANGRY MOB
(Acts 16:19-24)
What happened to Paul and Silas after Paul cast the demon out of the young girl?
Why were they really angry with Paul and Silas? Was money all they really cared about?
Did Paul and Silas try to fight back? Or did they allow suffering for the cause of Christ? Pastor Riling admits that he has never purposefully ask to suffer for the cause of Christ. Have you?

A PHILIPPIAN JAILER
(Acts 16:25-40)
Did Paul and Silas know that the jailer would be saved while they were in prison?
What happened when Paul and Silas sang and praised Jesus in prison?
Did the prisoners stay or run for their lives when the earthquake occurred?

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Why do we try on our own? We crave the good times, but when the bad times come, what do we do?

Pastor Riling reminds us that GOD breaks our chains. GOD battles for us.

Do not understand the devil and take him lightly. 2 Corinthians 2:10-11; 2 Corinthians 11:14; Acts 19

Scripture Passage: Acts 16:16-40

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why is it so significant when the Holy Spirit speaks?

ENSLAVED YOUNG WOMAN (Acts 16:16-18)
Who was the first person Paul and Silas met when they arrived in Macedonia? Why did Paul find her “annoying”? What was her “spirit of divination”? Was this a bad thing? How was Paul able to discern so quickly that the young girl was possessed by a demon?

What is “false gospel”? Pastor Riling believes we are seeing this today when people, especially believers, add to or take away from the Gospel. He says: “When we see a false gospel, we need to stand against it and proclaim the true Gospel.”

Why do we crave “mountain top experiences”? Is this wrong? Pastor Riling says not necessarily, but we need to be careful…

Title: The Showdown at the Jerusalem Council
Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues his sermon series on the book of Acts with a look at the Jerusalem Council.

He focuses on four areas this week:
1. The Issue
2. The Solution
3. The Conclusion
4. The Action

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 15:1-35

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett closes the sermon this week with some great takeaways we can learn from the Showdown at the Jerusalem Council.

Takeaway #1: There are hills to die on in the church, but they are few and far between. An old Protestant Motto: “In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.” Is the Bible the final authority that we should follow? Pastor Jarrett says: “There is no wiggle-room.” The Bible is God’s word. Jesus was born of a virgin. He is the son of the living God. He lived a perfect, sinless life. He died on a cross as a substitute for me and you. He was physically resurrected, physically ascended and is physically coming again. His Church is his Bride.

Takeaway #2: Conflict is inevitable. Use it as an opportunity for growth. What can we learn from the Early Church about how to handle conflict? How can we use conflict as an opportunity for growth? Pastor Jarrett says: “Address it swiftly and boldly. Just make sure you are doing so with empathy and compassion.”

Takeaway #3
: Be willing to surrender freedoms for the sake of the advancement of the gospel. What conclusion did the Jerusalem Council come to? Is there anything that you are doing or saying that is leading people away from Christ? Do you have a heart for unity?

Scripture References: Galatians 5:13

Hymn of Invitation

Title: The Showdown at the Jerusalem Council
Topic: Forward: A Study Through Acts
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 4

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues his sermon series on the book of Acts with a look at the Jerusalem Council.

He focuses on four areas this week:
1. The Issue
2. The Solution
3. The Conclusion
4. The Action

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XJssR511vs

Scripture Passage: Acts 15:1-35

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Richard C.H. Lenski was a Lutheran Pastor in the early 1900’s. He wrote a number of New Testament commentaries. He once wrote: “A bridge to heaven that is built of 99/100 of Christ and even only 1/100 of anything human breaks down at the joint and ceases to be a bridge. Even if Christ be thought of as carrying us 999 miles of the way, and something merely human be required for the last mile, this would leave us hanging in the air with heaven being still far away.”

The Solution: Let’s have a Showdown in Jerusalem
Why was it so hard for the Pharisees and the people to understand that circumcision was no longer necessary? Remember: We are not saved by our works. Only through faith in Christ. This was a new way of thinking for them! Pastor Jarrett says: “Jesus + Nothing = Everything!”
Can we add anything – anything – to the work Christ accomplished on the cross and in his resurrection?
James, Jesus’ half-brother, did not believe until after the resurrection. What happened after he finally did believe? What was his nickname? This is really interesting!

Scripture References: Romans 11:6; Galatians 2:16, 21; Galatians 2:9

The Conclusion: Salvation is by grace alone but be sensitive to others
Why should we be sensitive to others – believers and unbelievers alike?
What was the big picture in the new covenant?
Why did Paul and Barnabus warn the new believers not to continue with their old habits?

Scripture References: Ephesians 2:8-9

The Action: Write a letter to the churches educating and informing them on the decision.
Pastor Jarrett briefly discusses the letter and how it was such an encouragement to the new believers.

Scripture Passage: Acts 15:1-35

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The Solution: Let’s have a Showdown in Jerusalem

Were the Pharisees that Paul and Barnabus confronted true believers? Pastor Jarrett reminds us: “It’s possible to be a Christian and not have the correct understanding of certain doctrine…Let’s give people grace. Let’s give people space.”
Why were the Pharisees so reluctant to embrace the new teachings of the disciples?
Was there outright fighting among the Pharisees and Paul and Barnabus?
How did Peter “open the door to the Kingdom of heaven”?
Why was it so hard for the Pharisees and the people to understand that circumcision was no longer necessary? Remember: We are not saved by our works. Only through faith in Christ. This was a new way of thinking for them! Pastor Jarrett says: “Jesus + Nothing = Everything!”

Scripture Passage: Acts 15:1-35

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How is one made right with God? How can we be sure our sins are forgiven and that our eternal future is secure? Pastor Jarrett says: “If we can’t be sure on this, we can’t be sure of anything.”

The Issue: What the Church believes and teaches about salvation
Why was Peter’s vision from God so important to the timeline?
What was the gift? Who was the gift for?
What were the Pharisees telling the people? Were they right or wrong?

Scripture References: Genesis 17

The Solution: Let’s have a Showdown in Jerusalem
What was at stake when Paul and Barnabus went to Jerusalem to confront the Pharisees?
Have you ever been in the middle of a church split? Why were Paul and Barnabus ready to split the church over these issues?

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues in the Acts Forward series with his sermon from last week: “The Sending Church”, when he preached on our responsibility to further the Kingdom of God in three areas: seeking God, sending our best, and growing HIS Kingdom, rather than our own.

This week, he expands on each of these thoughts, using Scripture after Scripture in each segment to encourage us along the way.

Scripture Passage: Acts 14

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Practical Application #3: It’s a privilege to join God in His work and give Him all the glory.
Why did God choose Paul and Barnabus?
Why does God choose to use US? We aren’t special! But He chooses US!
What are YOU doing to further His Kingdom? You may not be called to teach Sunday School or travel the globe, but you ARE called to do SOMETHING!

This week, he expands on each of these thoughts, using Scripture after Scripture in each segment to encourage us along the way.

Scripture Passage: Acts 14

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why did the people turn on Paul just days after they worshipped him as a god? What did Paul write to Timothy and the church at Galatia? Was he encouraging them to push forward – no matter what? On their way back to Antioch, why did Paul and Barnabus travel back through the places that persecuted them? Were they crazy???

PRACTICAL APPLICATION #1:
Missionary and church planting enterprises are worth it! Is God the ultimate missionary? How are people around the world – and in your own community – going to hear about God’s love unless we send people to tell them?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION #2:
All churches need localized leadership as well as strengthening and encouragement. Why should we encourage one another? Remember: Paul didn’t just plant a church and then leave them alone. He wrote to them and went back to visit them as often as he could.

Tune in tomorrow for Practical Application #3: t’s a privilege to join God in his work and give him all the glory.

Day 3

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues in the Acts Forward series with his sermon from last week: “The Sending Church”, when he preached on our responsibility to further the Kingdom of God in three areas: seeking God, sending our best, and growing HIS Kingdom, rather than our own.

This week, he expands on each of these thoughts, using Scripture after Scripture in each segment to encourage us along the way.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 14

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett tells the story about the Roman Poet Ovid, who wrote “Metamorphosis”, which linked together all the great mythical stories of the past. This is really interesting! It also ties into New Testament Scholar, Dr. Steven Walton. What was his opinion of the story of the elderly couple and the gods? To view his picture and other information, click here and fast forward to the 47-minute mark.

Why do we need discernment and wisdom to know when to share the Gospel? How can we gain this knowledge?

Why do we need to share the Gospel? G.K. Chesterton: “When people stop believing in God, they do not believe in nothing. They believe in anything.”

Back to Acts 14: Why did the people turn on Paul just days after they worshipped him as a god?

They are committed to sending their best. Why is it important for churches to train and send missionaries to all parts of the world? How can YOU be a missionary in your own community?
They are committed to growing the Kingdom of God over their kingdom. Where is the focus of your church – on numbers in the pew or souls in heaven?

Who are some people in the Bible who fasted?

What can you fast from? It doesn’t have to be from food; you can fast from technology, the news, certain kinds of music… You can fast from anything! And it doesn’t have to be a full week. Start off slowly and follow God’s voice.

Before the Christmas break, Pastor Jarrett Stephens and others from CFBC were preaching from the Book of Acts. Pastor Jarrett continues in the series this week with his sermon “Turning Point”.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 13:1-3

Questions/Issues Discussed:

SEEK AFTER GOD: Through Worship

Worship – a right and willing response to who God is and what He does.

Do you worship while you work? You should be!

Why should we participate in both private and corporate worship? Pastor Jarrett encourages everyone to get back into church as soon possible. Quit staying home – unless you’re sick, of course!

SEEK AFTER GOD: Through Prayer and Fasting

Prayer is communion with God. Prayer connects us with God.

Fasting is abstaining from something physical for a period of time in order to seek God in a deeper more meaningful way. Fasting is starving the flesh and feeding the Spirit.

Alabama Pastor Chris Hodges with Church of the Highlands: “Prayer connects us to God. Fasting disconnects us from the world.”

Bill Bright, former leader of Campus Crusade for Christ: “I believe the power of fasting as it relates to prayer is the spiritual atomic bomb that our Lord has given us to destroy the strongholds of evil and usher in a great revival and spiritual harvest around the world.”

Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett preaches more on the importance of fasting.

Pastor Jarrett shares about the Celebration of Life service he recently presented for a man he greatly respected. This man’s life verse was Matthew 6:33. What is “supernatural secret sauce”? Can this also be called the “jumper cables” to our heart? What is your “spiritual diet”?

SEEK AFTER GOD

Worship – a right and willing response to who God is and what He does. (Pastor Jarrett’s interpretation)
Why should we participate in both private and corporate worship?
What should our attitude be when we worship?
Is there a “right way” to worship?
Can God speak to us through worship?

Will God sometimes use bad people to further His plan and purpose? Pastor Riling tells the story of Moses, who was saved by the daughter of the very king who was trying to kill him!

Day 4

Pastor Jarrett received a fantastic phone call from astronaut Shane Kimbrough FROM OUTER SPACE! This phone call reminded him of Apollo 13 and the famous words Jim Lovell spoke, “Houston, we have a problem”, which led him to this week’s sermon, “Jerusalem, We Have a Problem.”

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 6:1-7

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The Early Church in Jerusalem had a SOLUTION (vs 2-6)

Why were the deacons thought of as “less than”? Were they actually pretty important?

What were the criteria to be a deacon?

Pastor Jarrett shares about the special service they recently had to ordain new deacons and discusses some of their responsibilities in the church… Are the deacons the only ones called to serve in the church? HINT: Absolutely not! It’s everyone’s job! Pastor Jarrett shares a football fable to explain why everyone has a job to do within (and outside!) the church.

Why does Champion Forest model their church after the Early Church?

What was their solution to the problem the Hellenists faced?
Why didn’t they allow their different opinions to divide them?
Pastor Jarrett shares some of the core ideas of Champion Forest and explains why they lead this way.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The Early Church in Jerusalem had a PROBLEM (vs 1)

How did the Early Church deal with the problems they faced?

How should WE deal with the problems WE face today – both individually and corporately?

What is the difference between opposition and dissention?

Who were the “Hellenists”? What separated them from the Hebrews?

Commentator John Phillips once stated: “The tension between Hebrews and Hellenists went back a long time, to the very beginning of the Hellenist Period, when the brilliant world of Greek thought and culture burst upon the Jews and threatened to destroy Judaism, both with its philosophy and by its persecution.”

What were the Hellenists complaining about? Did the Hebrews have the same problem?

What can we learn from the Early Church about storming the gates of hell? Is the Church still storming the gates of hell today? This is the focus of Pastor Jarrett Stephen’s sermon, “Jailbreak” this week in the sermon series “Forward: A Study Through Acts”.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Acts 5:12-42

Questions/Issues Discussed:

OPPOSITION = AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE JESUS
Why didn’t the disciples stop sharing about Jesus?
Who was the Pharisee named Gamaliel? How did he “save” the disciples?
What did the disciples do after they were beaten?
Why did they continue to share the Gospel?
Would YOU continue to share the Gospel if you suffered the same opposition the disciples did?

Scripture Passage: Acts 5:12-42

Questions/Issues Discussed:

OPPOSITION = AN OPPORTUNITY TO OBEY JESUS

How did God deliver the disciples from their opposition?

Pastor Jarrett passionately says: “You don’t have life if you don’t have Jesus” and then he shares Scripture after Scripture about life in Jesus….

Scripture References
: John 1:4; John 3:16; John 6:35; John 8:12; John 10:10; John 11:25; John 14:6; John 20:30-31; 1 John 5:12

JESUS = LIFE

When and how did the disciples obey Jesus?

How would your life change if you obeyed Jesus immediately? Would it be a game-changer?

Charles Stanley: “Obey God and let him worry about the consequences.”

Why should we obey Jesus?

What did the Sanhedrin do when they realized the disciples were not in jail anymore? Were they confused? Did they try to stop the disciples again?

Scripture Passage: Acts 5:12-42

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Opposition comes in many forms. What opposition are you facing today? What can we gain from opposition? What can we learn from opposition?

OPPOSITION = AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRUST JESUS

The apostles did exactly what Jesus told them to do. What happened when they obeyed?

Warren Wiersbe: “It is an honor and a privilege to suffer with Christ and be treated by the world the way it treated Him. "The fellowship of His sufferings" is a gift from God. Not every believer grows to the point where God can trust him with this kind of experience, so we ought to rejoice when the privilege comes to us.”

Why does Satan put us through trials?

What does Jesus put us through tests?

Scripture References: 1 Peter 1:6-7; James 1:2-4

Opposition = Opportunity

What was the opposition that the Early Church faced?

Why were the Sanhedrin jealous of the disciples? What did they do in retaliation?

What opposition does the Church face today?

How are we to tackles opposition? Pastor Jarrett uses another football analogy. He also says this:
Sometimes God allows persecution and opposition to come to believers. And sometimes God appoints persecution and opposition to come to believers. Either way, persecution and opposition should serve to strengthen our trust in and dependance on God and grow our faith in him.”

Is opposition ALWAYS from Satan? HINT: Nope. Pastor Jarrett explains using a quote from the Life Application Bible.

The Early Church was growing by the thousands. Is your church growing? How can your church grow? How many people in your community still need Jesus? Pastor Jarrett shares about a future church project…

KEY DESCRIPTOR #2: The Model Church had a Fear of God

Barnabus laid all he had at the apostles’ feet. Then Ananias did the same…or so he said. What did he actually do? What was the consequence? Did his wife lie and experience the same consequence?

What does “fear of God” mean?  Is it just “fear” or is it more than that? Pastor Jarrett has his own definition for this: “Honoring God from so deep within that we live a life wholly pleasing to Him. We hold Him in highest esteem – not man. It’s all about Him. It’s all for Him.”

Can we ever lie to God and not reap the consequences? Absolutely not.

Is God just waiting for us to mess up and send His wrath upon us? Absolutely not.

Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett offers Scripture and Scripture on why we should fear God.

How did the Early Church show generosity to others?
Does God show favor to those who are generous?
What are you doing with your free time? Do you stay shut in or go on a lavish vacation? Or do you serve others? NOTE: It’s important to take “me time” to recharge, but it’s also important to give your time to others, as well.

Does God favor unity or division?
Why is unity so important to not only our individual walk with Christ but also our corporate walk?
Is your guard up against Satan’s scheme to divide?

Scripture Passage: Acts 3:1-26

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why does God choose to heal some people in the here and now on earth and others He heals in heaven? Pastor Jarrett says: “It’s not something I can explain. It’s a divine mystery. But I take comfort in these words.” (He then quotes Isaiah 55:8-9)

APPLICATION #3: Pray for Jesus to be exalted.

Do you pray for the name of Jesus to be exalted above everything else?

As you pray for a miracle, are you praying for his name to be exalted?

Are you living your life to exalt his name?

Day 4

Have you ever felt hopeless? Neglected? Rejected? We all have at one point or another. The good news is this: God will never, ever leave us! He is always right by our side. He knows every situation and circumstance we will face in life. He is fighting with us.

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the sermon series on the book of Acts with his sermon “Footloose”.

Scripture Passage: Acts 3:1-26

Questions/Issues Discussed:

APPLICATION #1: Pray for Divine Appointment
What is a divine appointment?
What was Peter and John’s divine appointment that day?
What will be YOUR divine appointment today? Pastor Jarrett warns us to not be too busy or distracted to see our divine appointments. In fact, go look for one!

APPLICATION #2: Pray for Miracles
About the lame man… What was more miraculous: his physical healing or his spiritual healing?
Does God still perform miracles? You bet!

FACT: There are 14 miracles performed in the book of Acts!

What is the purpose of miracles?
Can you put yourself in the lame man’s position? Can you imagine how he felt on a daily basis?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

A MESSAGE PROCLAIMED (Acts 3:11-26)

Pastor Jarrett says that every message that is preached and proclaimed should be three things: Scripture-saturated, Christ-centered, and Spirit-filled. Did Peter take the credit for healing the lame man?

What was Peter’s response to the people?

Why does Champion Forest offer an invitation at the end of the service? Is it only for those who are not saved or need prayer?

Tune in tomorrow for applications from Pastor Jarrett’s sermon.

A MIRACLE TAKES PLACE (Acts 3:1-10)

How did Peter help the lame man?

What does the name of Jesus mean? Pastor Jarrett quotes Richard Longenecker, a New Testament scholar.
What happened to the lame man when Peter spoke the name of Jesus?

WORSHIP

Are you “all-in” for God? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that not only are discipleship and fellowship are important, but so is worship.

Are you joyful and generous? Does your face reflect the love of God? Can people see a difference in you?

How often do you pray? Not just at church or before a meal… How often do you really pray? Do you treat worship as prayer time? Well, you should!

Remember: Jesus needed prayer and so do we!

Pastor Jarrett says: “We commit to an aggressive pursuit of God through prayer for spiritual awakening in our church, community, country, and world.”

FELLOWSHIP
Are you living life with your Church body?
Are you encouraging others in their Christian walk?

Pastor Jarrett shares some wise words from Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose Driven Life”. He also points out that not one time in Acts 2:42-47 is a singular person mentioned.

If Pastor Jarrett had to sum up Peter’s sermon in one sentence, it would be: “God sent Jesus as Scripture predicted and you rejected and killed him, but because he is God’s holy one, he was raised from the dead and is now exalted at the right hand of God.”

The people responded to Peter’s message with great enthusiasm. Do you respond to the Gospel with this same enthusiasm?

Scripture Passage: Acts 1

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Without the Holy Spirit – without His guidance, leadership, and direction – we can do nothing. Pastor Jarrett tries to make a glove pick up the Bible and be a disciple. Is this possible? Can he just “will” the glove to open the Bible? Of course he can’t because that is not its purpose. And you can’t be who you are supposed to be or do what you’re supposed to do without the Holy Spirit.

THE MISSION (vs 8)
William Carey was a great missionary. Pastor Jarrett shares a little of his story…

How many languages exist in the world? Do all of these languages have a written Bible? Are there still people around the world (even in America) who have never heard the message of the Gospel?

Are you praying for sensitivity toward those who don’t believe?

Are you praying for the courage to speak up?

Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett completes his sermon, offering encouragement to motivate us as we go out into the world to share the Gospel to others.
