QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
PRAY WITH FAITH: (James 5:15)
Do you have faith when you pray? Or do you pray just to pray? Yes! There is a difference! (James 1:6-8)
Do you believe that God really does want what is best for you – even when/if you get a different answer than you are expecting?
Is there a “formula” for praying and receiving a “yes” answer? HA!
NO!
American evangelist, pastor, and educator R.A. Torrey once stated: “Nothing lies beyond the reach of prayer except that which lies outside the will of God.”
PRAY WITH FERVENCY: (James 5:16b-18)
What does “fervently” mean? Why is this so important? Pastor Jarrett urges us to examine our prayer life and if it lacks fervor, change it!
How did the prophet Elijah pray?
Can praying with hope, faith, and fervor really give us encouragement? (Romans 15:4)
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Stand strong in your faith.
Make decision by faith.
Trust God in the face of the impossible.
If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and
Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor

Why are elders in the Church important?
Why do we anoint in the name of Jesus? This is very important! Listen close!
Is confession important when praying, even praying with others? (Psalm 32:3-5)
Why should we confess our sins before taking the Lord’s Supper? (1 Corinthians 11:27-30)
Does prayer really draw us closer to God? (1 John 1:9)

Day 5
Wouldn’t it be great if the Christian life was easy and comfortable?
Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the sermon series on the book of James. Their desire during this series is for you to grow in a sincere and genuine faith, firmly knowing what you believe and why, and then living out that belief in your daily interactions with those in your home and community.
Scripture Passage: James 5:7-12

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
John Blanchard stated: “Biblical patience is not rotted in fatalism that says everything is out of control. It is rooted in faith that says everything is in God’s control.”
JAMES’ MOTIVATION: The Lord is compassionate and merciful.
Does God really hear our cries and pleas for help? If so, how can we still have patience and be positive?
How does God’s kindness lead to repentance? (Romans 2:4)
Are you ever dishonorable or unholy toward God? Why? Remember He is compassionate and merciful!
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Look Up! Christ is coming.
Look Back! God has been faithful.
Look In! Concentrate on what God is forming in you.
Look Out! God wants to use downtime to reveal Himself to you.
Look Forward! This is just a season. “This too shall pass!”

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
JAMES’ MOTIVATION: The Lord is Judge.
What is a Judge? Is God really the Ultimate Judge? Is God the Sovereign Judge?
Do you have confidence that God is signing off on all things that happen in your life – even the hard times?
Did you know that realizing and acknowledging God is Judge can remove grumbling and fear from your life? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that God judged the Israelites for their disobedience BUT He also brought them something so much better!
Scripture References: Hebrews 9:27; Matthew 25; 2 Corinthians 5:10; 1 Corinthians 3:13-15
JAMES’ MOTIVATION: The Lord is working a plan that is for His glory and our good.
Wouldn’t it be great if we knew God’s plan for our lives? BUT if we knew the plan, we wouldn’t have faith! Pastor Jarrett clarifies that tough times are not good and reminds us of Job, Jeremiah, and Isaiah. He says: “Not everything that happened to God’s prophets was good in and of itself, but it was ultimately for their good and for God’s glory.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Does anyone know when Jesus is coming back?
Are we living in the Last Days now?
Why should we be ready for the return of Jesus at any time? Are you excited for the second coming of Jesus? (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; 1 Peter 5:6-10; 2 Peter 3:8-12)
Pastor Jarrett reminds us that having close Christian friends is so very important. After all – Jesus had twelve of them! They can and will help us through those tough times.

Why did James repeatedly rebuke the wealthy who didn’t share their riches?
Who was the Minor Prophet Amos? What was life like for Amos and the people at that time? What was his warning to the people about their wealth? (Amos 6:1a; 4-8)
How and why is pride the root of all sin?
We can use our wealth for good. But can our wealth also harden our hearts and cause us to sin?

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the sermon series on the book of James. Their desire during this series is for you to grow in a sincere and genuine faith, firmly knowing what you believe and why, and then living out that belief in your daily interactions with those in your home and community.
Scripture Passage: James 4:13-17

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
REALITY #1: The Uncertainty of Life
Pastor Jarrett: “The only certainty in life is that life is uncertain.”
Who was James writing to in this passage? Who had he already written to previously?
Why did James single out specific people?
Why did James warn the people about choosing their own destiny/future?
Were the people living as if God didn’t exist even though they were believers?
Pastor Jarrett passionately talks about the people in Israel and the war and terror they are experiencing once again. Be in prayer for peace in the Middle East.

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the sermon series on the book of James. Their desire during this series is for you to grow in a sincere and genuine faith, firmly knowing what you believe and why, and then living out that belief in your daily interactions with those in your home and community.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
RESULTS OF WAR/CONFLICT:
Enmity with God: Enmity is hatred and leads to distance.
Enemy of God: God loves you! Do you love Him back?
Have you ever heard of Paul’s fellow worker, Demas? What happened to him? Did he follow Christ or follow the world? Pastor Jarrett reads from Philemon 1:23-24, Colossians 4:14, and 2 Timothy 4:10.
HOW TO WIN THE WAR:
Grace. Period. End of the war. Give grace. Give more and more and more grace. In return, you will receive more and more and more grace from God.
How to receive more grace: be humble, be submissive to God, and repent.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett warned us how Satan uses sex (which is a good thing!) as something bad – pornography. Today, he reminds us how our words can be harmful to others, comparing it to emotional murder.
REASON #2 WE HAVE WAR/CONFLICT IN RELATIONSHIPS: We cave into fleshly desires.
Are you a “my way or the highway” kind of person? Remember: Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life – not you!
How often do you pray about your conflict before reacting? Pastor Jarrett says: “All
answered prayer begins with an ‘ask’.” He warns us, though, to be
careful when we pray to not seek fleshly desires, calling those “diseased
prayers”.
RESULTS OF WAR/CONFLICT:
Enmity with God. Enmity is hatred and leads to distance.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Do you often blame the other person/persons for your problem/war/conflict? Is it *really* always their fault?
What/who is the common denominator?
REASON #1 WE HAVE WAR/CONFLICT IN RELATIONSHIPS: We embrace worldly wisdom.
How often do you “Go Incredible Hulk” on people?
Do you want peace in your life/relationships? Listen to God – not the world!
Where do you have conflicts? Pray about it and seek God’s wisdom!
Do you care more about being right in an argument than you care about being right in a relationship? Think about that! How can you change that attitude? Stop seeking the world’s wisdom and approval!
NOTE: If you missed last week’s sermon with Mark Lanier, he did a great job preaching on Worldy Wisdom vs Godly Wisdom. Check out our archives for the segments.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Pastor Jarrett Stephens begins the sermon reminiscing about the fun 80’s television shows he loved to watch, especially
The Incredible Hulk. Why did Dr. Banner (the star) want to have super human strength? What made him so strong? Are we all a little bit like Dr. Banner/The Hulk? How does this apply to James and the Bible?

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
EXAMPLES OF EARTHLY WISDOM:
The ends justify the means. Mark uses the book, “The Prince”, by Niccolò Machiavelli as one example and the song, “Here for a Good Time”, by George Strait as another example.
You can do it. Conceive it. Achieve it. Mark reads from the book, “You Can Do It Yourself”, by Eli Vlaisavljevich.
The means get you to the right end. (James 3:15-17) NO!! God will make your path straight! Lean on God, not the world.
EXAMPLES OF GODLY WISDOM:
Suffering comes, but joy underlines the suffering. (Matthew 5:11-12; John 16:33) Let God’s joy infuse your life.
Human achievement without God is spittle! (Philippians 3:8) Ask for wisdom and be prepared to get it!

Day 3
Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
James 2:24: “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”
So, which is it?
Pastor Scott Riling continues the sermon series on the book of James. Their desire during this series is for you to grow in a sincere and genuine faith, firmly knowing what you believe and why, and then living out that belief in your daily interactions with those in your home and community.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Is there a right kind of faith? Is there a right kind of Christianity? Is true faith lived out in works?
(Johns 2:23-25)
Is having a saving faith more than just believing the right things? (Mark 12:28-34) Pastor Scott reminds us that even Satan believes in God and His son Jesus! He knows everything about the Bible, but he is the sworn enemy of God.

Favoritism is Unchristian (James 2:2-4)
Why should we apply this James passage to other areas, such as racism?
Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett quoted Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. from a
Meet the Press Interview from
April 17, 1960.
Today, he discusses the recent movie,
The Jesus Revolution, and passionately pleads with his own church, CFBC, to love everyone they meet – no matter what, saying: “Let’s never bow down to preference and partiality… Christianity doesn’t have a caste system.”
So, why is favoritism so bad anyway? (1 Samuel 16:7; Job 34:19; Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9)

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Pay Attention (James 2:1)
About the sermon title… What does “favoritism” mean?
Why did James call out the peoples’ sin? How did he even know about their sin?
At this time in history, there weren’t many “middle class”. Is this why “rich people” were shown favoritism?
Favoritism is Unchristian (James 2:2-4)
How do you react if someone “good looking” comes into your office, church, life group, etc? Do you act the same way with someone who is dressed poorly?
What happens in our heart when we judge others on their outward appearance? James calls it “evil thoughts” and some translations say “evil or worldly motives”. Pastor Jarrett says: “Making judgements about people is not inherently simple or wrong. We are called to be discerning… and make certain judgements… But we are not called to judge in hypocrisy.”
Why should we apply this James passage to other areas, such as racism? Pastor Jarrett quotes Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. from a

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
REFLECT ON THE WORD (James 1:22-25)
Why is it so important for Christians to study the Bible intently and memorize Scripture? (Galatians 6:7-9 & 1 John 2:15-17)
Is it also important to join a small group and have an accountability partner?
RESPOND TO THE WORD (James 1:22)
Are you “walking the walk” or just “talking the talk”?
How can we “respond to the Word”? Pastor Jarrett says: “If there is a command, obey it! If there is a promise, claim it! If there is a sin, avoid it! If there is an example to follow, then follow it! If there is a lesson to learn, then take it in!”
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Receive, reflect, and respond to the Word that saves you and sanctifies you. Do this, and if you are ever arrested for being a Christian, there will be more than enough evidence to convict you.
If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett used the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-9) to explain why we should come before God with a humble heart and be quick to listen and slow to speak (Ephesians 4:26). He begins the segment today confessing about his childish eating habits. It’s pretty funny so listen in!
RECEIVE THE WORD (James 1:19-21)
Is it ever okay to be angry?
Were people in the Bible ever righteously angry? (Hebrews 4:12)
Have you ever been angry with God? Was it “really” God’s fault? (2 Corinthians 6:14; Hebrews 13:4; Proverbs 19:3)
Is it possible to live however we want to and still expect to hear from God?
HINT: NOPE!
Why has God planted His Word in our hearts? Is it really that important? Pastor Jarrett reminds us of the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31 and Ezekial 36).

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Pastor Jarrett discussed deception and disobedience yesterday…
THE PROCESS OF TEMPTATION: Death (vs)
How can temptation bring us physical and spiritual death?
Do we invite death into our life each time we give into temptation?
Pastor Jarrett reminds us: “Sin takes us further than we want to go, keeps us longer than we want to stay, and costs us far more than we are willing to pay.”
Is sin ever “secret”? Or will our sins be “found out”? (Galatian 6:7-8)
Why is death the ultimate price when we give into temptation? Pastor Jarrett recommends everyone re-read Genesis 3.
CAN WE TRUST GOD? Yes! God wants good!

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:
Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett discussed how our “desires” can tempt us – even good desires!
THE PROCESS OF TEMPTATION: Deception (vs 14)
What does “deceive” mean?
How can we be deceived when we are tempted? Pastor Jarrett uses the illustration of a fishing lure as he talks about our natural sexual desire, reminding us to “Look for the hook!”
THE PROCESS OF TEMPTATION: Disobedience (vs 15)
The timeline between desire and deception is sometimes long. However, the timeline between deception and disobedience is usually very quick. Why?
Can Satan “force” us to sin? Pastor Jarrett uses a football illustration to explain how Satan tempts us. He then makes a sermon confession about ice cream…

PRAYER PROVIDES A PROPER PERSPECTIVE ON PAIN AND PROBLEMS THAT PRODUCES PERSEVERANCE AND HELPS US FIND PURPOSE (James 1:12)
“What did I do to deserve this”? Why is this a normal response for us?
Why do we experience trials? (Romans 8:29) Pastor Jarret believes there are two reasons: discipline and development.
Why does God discipline us? Think of Jonah…
Why does God want us to develop and grow our faith? Think of Daniel…
Will some of our trials remain a mystery this side of heaven? (James 1:12)
Pastor Jarrett shares a great exercise by
psychologist Jonathan Haidt.
PRAYER PROVIDES A PROPER PERSPECTIVE ON PAIN AND PROBLEMS THAT PRODUCES PERSEVERANCE AND HELPS US FIND PURPOSE ON THE PATHWAY TO PERFECTION (James 1:1-12)
What does “perfect” mean?
Will we ever reach perfection?
Does God want us comfortable, living in convenience? Or does God desire our “completeness”?
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Comfort others with the comfort with which you have been comforted. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
