Topic: A Deep Dive into Galatians
Discussed by David Fleming
with Lanier Theological Library (www.LanierTheologicalLibrary.org)

Day 5

David Fleming, former Senior Pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church, presented the final lesson in the Galatian series on May 30. David is currently the Executive Director of the Lanier Learning Center with the Lanier Theological Library.

The Gospel in not on trial in Paul’s letter to the Galatians. But the people ARE. In the final verses in the book of Galatians, Paul summarizes the case against the defendants.

Scripture Passage: Galatians 6:11-18

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Bottom Line: What evidence really matters? Church attendance? Serving? Tithing? Faith?

Do you have a religion or do you have a relationship?

Will God welcome you into heaven? Or will you hear the words “depart from me; I never knew you”?

If you know Jesus, is he changing your heart? David Fleming reminds us that we are NEVER too old (or young) for Jesus to change us.

Scripture References: Matthew 7:23

POINTS TO PONDER:
Accept grace
Rest in grace
Pass grace on

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How did the cross change Paul? How has the cross changed you? Has the cross “really” changed you?

Do you expect Jesus to do all the work? What are YOU doing? We ALL can do something!

Do good works matter? Do they save us? Do they grant us a place in heaven?

Nothing is better than Jesus. Why would we boast in anything else?

Reminder: Jesus didn’t die for the “good people”; he died for sinners – and that means EVERY person.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Five Accusations Paul leveled against the Galatians:
Discussed on Tuesday:
Enforcers – good persuaders
Showoffs – strutting around
Great talkers – excusing themselves from persecution. David Fleming speaks on this point for several minutes. It’s super important!!
Hypocrites – not everyone keeps the law
FINAL accusation: Boastful – bragging on themselves

Did Paul understand what circumcision meant to the Galatians? Did he know the law? How was he transformed on the Road to Damascus? What was his mission before he found Jesus? What happened to him after he found Jesus?

Is it ever okay to boast? What SHOULD we boast in? What did Paul boast in?

Does God care about family? Hint: Absolutely!

Where do you want to sow your seeds – in the world or in God? What is more important to you – the flesh or the Spirit? Do you try to please yourself or God? Mark says that yes, these are tough questions, but they must be addressed.

Do you ever grow weary of trying to be good and do good things? Are you ever fearful that you will mess up or won’t do enough? We all feel this way – it’s human nature. How did Paul encourage the Galatians to keep going? How can his words encourage us today?

Galatians 6:3 reads: “But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.” Mark digs deeper into other verses to explain what Paul meant…

What is the mission of the Church? Are you helping to fulfill this mission? If not, why not?

Title: Spiritual Living Part 2
Topic: A Deep Dive into Galatians
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

What does it mean to be led by the Spirit? What is Spiritual Living? Last week, Mark Lanier began his lesson “Spiritual Living” but ran out of time. This week he continues this discussion with a closer look at the battle between the flesh and the Spirit.

To view Mark’s video for this lesson, click here.

Scripture Passage: Galatians 5:16-26

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What does “evidence” mean? What evidence do we have that the flesh is at war with the Spirit?

What are the works of the flesh? Mark explains that there are many, many works of the flesh and most have multiple sub-issues. It is a constant battle, but the Spirit is there to help and guide and us. After all, a seed doesn’t grow into fruit overnight. It’s a process.

POINTS TO PONDER:
Live by the Spirit
Put the flesh to death
Trust God for the journey

Mark shares how he was asked to sue and shut down Facebook. Is this even possible?

How did Paul describe the “flesh”? How did he describe the “Spirit”? How did Paul offer encouragement to the people (and to us) on battling the flesh with the Spirit?

God is repulsed by sin. Are YOU repulsed by YOUR sin? OUCH! This one hits hard, doesn’t it?

Mark explains how the Greek language uses a lot of connecting words. It was also sung almost as much as it was spoken. It is also a pretty confusing language, but this is interesting stuff. What happens when the connecting words are removed? This is what Paul did in the letter to the Galatians! He did it on purpose so we could understand his emphasis…

How did Paul find his “church members”?

What did Paul preach to the Jews in the Synagogues? Did many people believe him? Did Jewish leaders keep preaching the same Truth or did they contradict Paul?

Day 5

This week, Mark looks at three pieces of practical advice from Paul’s letter to the Galatians:

1. The seduction of self-justification
2. The freedom to live is a freedom to love
3. The key teaching Paul had for the Galatian communities – and for you us, too.

Scripture Passage: Galatians 5:7-15

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE FREEDOM TO LIVE IS A FREEDOM TO LOVE:
God has called you into freedom. Have you answered the call yet?
Why did Paul write about being free from the “flesh”? Mark references FF Bruce to help explain…
What hinders us from having freedom in Christ?
What does agape love mean? Are you exhibiting agape love to others?
Why should we be “enslaved” in love to one another? (vs 14)

THE KEY TEACHING PAUL HAD FOR THE GALATIAN COMMUNITIES:
Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
Care for your neighbor as you care for yourself.

POINTS TO PONDER:
Grow in love
Grow in knowledge
Show God’s love
Remember where love comes from

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE SEDUCTION OF SELF-JUSTIFICATION:
Do we have any ability to merit the love of God?
If we think we have the right to God’s love, are we setting ourselves up for a trap?
When we have pride instead of humility, Mark says we do one of two things: We either struggle under the weight of our sin and inadequacy OR we live under a pompous lie that we are.
Song writer Isaac Watts wrote the hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”. Why does this song have a significant meaning to Mark?

THE FREEDOM TO LIVE IS A FREEDOM TO LOVE:
Mark also quotes Scottish preacher James Denney, who stated: “The cross is the generative principal of everything Christian in the life of a person.”
What did Paul say about freedom? (vs 13)
God has called you into freedom. Have you answered the call yet?
Why did Paul write about being free from the “flesh”? Tune in tomorrow for more on this.

Title: Lesson 14: Freedom!
Topic: A Deep Dive into Galatians
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 3

This week, Mark looks at three pieces of practical advice from Paul’s letter to the Galatians:

1. The seduction of self-justification
2. The freedom to live is a freedom to love
3. The key teaching Paul had for the Galatian communities – and for you us, too.

To view Mark’s video for this lesson, click here.

Scripture Passage: Galatians 5:7-15

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email
wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE SEDUCTION OF SELF-JUSTIFICATION:

Why is it important to teach and preach the truth of the Word?

Does it frustrate you when people misquote the Bible or twist the words in the Bible to mean something else? It frustrates Mark, which is why he is so careful in teaching the truth.

Why did Paul use circumcision as an example in his letter to the Galatians? (vs 11) Why did others use Paul’s words to say that circumcision was important? Is this really what Paul was preaching?

What does being “saved through the cross of Christ” mean? Are people from the Old Testament in hell because Jesus hadn’t died on the cross for their sins yet? Do babies who die before they hear the Gospel go to hell or heaven?

Scripture References: Acts 16:3; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE SEDUCTION OF SELF-JUSTIFICATION:

Who hinders you from obeying the truth? (vs 7)

Has anyone ever tried to persuade you that the Bible is not true?

Mark confesses that he has been worried about things lately. This is pretty normal, but is it un-Christian?

Have you ever realized that it is GOD who has called you into His Kingdom? He has called you himself! Why do you let things trip you up along the way? Mark shares song lyrics from Bob Dylan to explain why trusting God is all we need.

How did Paul use the analogy of baking bread compared to sin in these verses? The Torah references bread baking as well!
Mark reminds us of the time Satan tempted Jesus. How did he tempt him? What did he tempt him with?

Where was Paul’s confidence? How did he know this was true? Why did he tell the people of Galatia about this confidence? (vs 10)

Did Jesus only die for the “bad people”? Well, yes, he did – because we are ALL bad people!

What was the benefit of the death of Jesus? Once we are saved, can we just continue to live like we once did? This is the message Paul was conveying to the people of Galatia and they were just not getting it. Mark uses the original Greek to explain this and why it wasn’t really about circumcision or uncircumcision; it was about living a life for God and not self. It was about obeying the Law.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Does Paul preach practical advice for the Gospel in other passages (outside of Galatians)?

Why does Mark love Greek so much? Does he believe knowing Greek helps understand the Bible?

The first word of this chapter by Paul is “look”. Why is this important?

SIDE BAR: Mark wants you in church! It doesn’t need to be at Champion Forest. He just wants you to go! It’s important!

Who was Paul writing to in this chapter – Jews or Greeks?

Are you a “nice” person? Is your relationship with God based on being “nice”? Is your ticket to heaven based on your “niceness”? This is basically the point Paul was conveying in this chapter with his circumcision comparison. More on this tomorrow.

with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

This week, Mark wraps up on the theology side of Galatians. Next week, he will begin with the practical advice from the letter.

Mark looks at three things:
1. The reality of the letter
2. A bizarre allegory/analogy
3. The summation: a transition from theology to practical advice

To view Mark’s video for this lesson, click here.

Scripture Passage: Galatians 4:12-5:1

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email
wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE SUMMATION: A TRANSITION FROM THEOLOGY TO PRACTICAL ADVICE:
Can we ever merit God’s love because we are “good enough”?
Can we just do whatever we want because we know we’ll be forgiven?
What is the difference between following God out of pleasure and following God out of duty?
What place does “shame” have in the Christian walk?

We all have good days and bad days. Mark reminds us that God is always there, at work in our lives. More importantly, we are His promise!

POINTS TO PONDER:
This is real life.
God makes promises – and one of those promises is YOU.
His promise is to form Christ in you.

How did God use Paul to bring faith to the people of Galatia?
Did Paul have an affection for the people? Did they have affection for him, too?
Mark admits that sometimes he doesn’t feel like teaching class. He is tired. He has work to do. He wants to just stay home. What keeps him going, though?
How do we become more Christlike every day? Was Paul’s letter trying to point the people of Galatia to the same goal?

Who was Theophrastus? What did he write about Paul spitting?
Do some theologians think Paul had epilepsy? Did Paul have an eye issue? Did he catch malaria?
What was Paul’s problem? What is YOUR problem?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Who was Louis Pasteur? Who was Johannes Kepler? What was Ilya Mechnikov? What do their discoveries have in common?

Reminder: The central theme of the Book of Galatians is one question: “How are we okay with God?”

God is 100% pure. We are absolutely not! Why would He love and want us? How can God be “in us” if He is pure and we are not? How can He (God/Jesus) be sinless yet have our sinful blood running through Him? Was Mary “perfect” and “sinless” when she was impregnated by God with Jesus?

God is 100% just. We are absolutely not! This is part of His purity. How does a 100% just God forgive US – 100% sinners? Does every person who has ever lived and will live have the opportunity to accept God’s love, grace, and mercy?

How do we merit God’s mercy by keeping the Law? HINT: We can’t! Tune in tomorrow as Mark discusses more about Paul’s response to the Pharisees who were teaching this false doctrine.

Did Jesus give us the power to keep the Law?

Did Jesus become the curse for us?

How can the Law help us grow in our faith and walk with Christ?

Points to Ponder:
Galatians 1:15-17 The sovereignty of God did not destroy Paul as a person. (It won’t destroy you, either!)
Galatians 2:16 All of faith’s value is in its object – faith directed toward Christ.
Galatians 2:19 The person justified by faith cannot go on wanting to disappoint and shame God – the God who paid the awful price to save me (and you).

What is “moral goodness”? Is this in the Gospel? Mark uses some legal terms to explain and will continue his explanation tomorrow.

This week, Mark does a review of the last nine weeks of lessons on the book of Galatians.

To view Mark’s video for this lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email
wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Was Paul’s Gospel message “made up”? Or was it given to him by God?

Historically, there have been two ideas about authority. Why does Mark believe we are now seeing a third? What is this authority? Is it based on the Gospel?

Side Bar: Mark once helped President George W. Bush with a legal matter and received a personal phone call from him. Funny story…

How does a person stand before God? By the grace of God in Christ…

What does the “grace of God in Christ” mean?

What is “infused grace”?

Why did Paul call the Galatian’s “gospel” perverted? Where the people just confused?

Day 1

This week, Mark does a review of the last nine weeks of lessons on the book of Galatians.

To view Mark’s video for this lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What two terms do scholars use when presenting an argument?

How can WE, sinful humans, stand before a perfect God? Mark recommends reading the book of Romans for further study.

Why was Paul upset when he wrote the letter to the people of Galatia? When did he write the letter?

Does Paul’s letter relate to non-believers more than it does to believers?

Does Paul have the authority to tell us how to stand before God?

Where should our authority come from? Do too many people in today’s society try to make God fit into their box? Do they try to change Scripture? Are too many acting as their own authority?

Was Paul’s Gospel message “made up”? Or was it given to him by God?

Title: Lesson 5: Focused and Faithful
Topic: A Deep Dive into Galatians
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 1

Pastor Jarrett Stephens subs in for Mark Lanier this week. He continues with the Galatians series with his lesson “Focused and Faithful”.

For this week’s lesson, click here. NOTE: Due to technical difficulties, the last few minutes of the lesson is unavailable.

Scripture Passage: Galatians 2:1-14

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is the Gospel? Is adding to or taking away from the Gospel wrong?

What is Paul doing in this letter to the Galatians? Two things: Defending his ministry and defending the Gospel.

What were the false teachers doing? Were they a threat?

Why was Paul so passionate about the Gospel? Pastor Jarrett says that if you have lost your passion, think about what brought you to Christ in the first place.

Why did Paul take Titus with him to Jerusalem? Why did Luke write about this? More on this tomorrow…

Title: Lesson 4: A Letter of Grace
Topic: A Deep Dive into Galatians
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

This week’s lesson is a little different than others. Mark received a long email from a class member with a question about Paul’s letter to the Galatians. You may have the same question. So, Mark’s focus will be on that email this week in his lesson entitled “A Letter of Grace”.

The Question: Is the Gospel more than just the “Good News”?

For this week’s lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is our response to the Gospel just as important as Jesus death on the cross? This one is tricky…

Is the Gospel meant to save us?

Remember the time Paul was in prison and the soldier thought Paul had escaped after an earthquake? What happened next?

Why does Paul quote the Septuagint?

Bottom Line: The Gospel message is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Mark recommends reading “The Cross and the New Testament” and “The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross”.

Scripture References: Romans 1:16; Acts 16:25; Acts 17:16, 25; Joel 2:32; Isaiah 40:9

Is there a difference between duty and earning? This might not make sense, but just listen as Mark discusses this…

Is our response to the Gospel just as important as Jesus death on the cross? This one is tricky. More on it tomorrow…

Why did the people want Paul dead? What happened when they captured him?
Paul’s life was not full of sunshine and roses. Why didn’t he just give up?
Did Paul deny his past? Or did he embrace the mistakes he made that led him to Christ?
How does God equip us?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Did you know that Mark had COVID-19 last November? Thankfully he is doing great (obviously)! He was told to take a specific kind of medicine. Why didn’t he just take whatever he wanted instead of following the doctor’s advice? It’s the same way with the Gospel.

Did Jesus just die for a few select people? Did he die for only the people who do good works? Did Jesus die for only people back in his time? No. Nope. Absolutely not. He died for every person!

Why did Paul warn the people not to preach a different kind of Gospel message? Was he upset over the Galatians’ disobedience?

What is grace? Mark quotes Frederick Fyvie “F.F.” Bruce: “The grace of which Paul speaks is not simply a benevolent attitude on the part of God or Christ. It’s demonstrated in God’s saving pact in the death of Christ.”

How did Paul preach the Gospel? Did he warn the people not to preach a different kind of Gospel message? Mark reads from 1 Corinthians 15. More on this tomorrow…

What does “deliver” mean? How did Jesus do this for us? What can Jesus deliver us from? Is there anything that Jesus doesn’t deliver us from? Remember: God didn’t spare Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace; He saved them as they went through it.

Who is the Church? Mark reminds us that the Church is not a building or a denomination; it’s the people who share in the redemption that comes from the cross of Christ.

Greek letters normally started with the word “grace”. Why did Paul mix the Hebrew and Greek together? This is super interesting. Listen close!

What is the Grace of God? What is the Peace of God? What is the Peace of Christ? Are they the same thing?

Mark shares how a copy of Professor Floyd’s Greek New Testament has helped him time and time again. (Use the link above to view the visuals for this.)
