Title: What Matters Most
Topic: Loving Your Neighbor
Discussed by Pastor David Fleming
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Note: Every year, Champion Forest Baptist Church hosts a Dream Banquet on the Sunday before MLK Day. This event honors the great Martin Luther King, Jr. and special guests offer insight on how the church can branch out into the community. If you missed this year’s Dream Banquet at Champion Forest Baptist Church, make plans to attend next year. It is always held the Sunday before MLK Day.

During Pastor David Fleming’s sermon on January 14, several references are made concerning the event. We decided to keep the comments regarding the event in his sermon because they remind us what Jesus said about being a Good Samaritan.

Please enjoy this week’s sermon, “Loving Your Neighbor” on Luke 10, from the sermon series “What Matters Most”.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Further application:
1. Don’t overlook the significance of race… Jesus mentioned the difference in race and religion on purpose! He was “pushing on their prejudice”.
2. Don’t ignore the racial divide in our country. We should be moving closer together, not father apart. If the church doesn’t step up, our nation is in more trouble than we care to admit. “You cannot read the Bible and see anywhere that God turns or blinks at injustice,” Pastor Fleming remind us.
3. What are you doing to unite with others? What are you NOT doing? Can you empathize with your neighbors? Do you know their story?

Do you know their scars and the battles they have fought?

Doing something is better than doing nothing.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

NOTE: Listen to yesterday’s segment to hear Pastor Fleming’s first two suggestions on how you can be a good neighbor…

How can you be a good neighbor?

3. Do something immediately. Don’t call a committee meeting. Don’t conduct an online survey. Don’t Google to see the best way to help. JUST DO IT!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. commented on the Parable: “I imagine that the first question the priest and the Levite asked was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what would happen to me?’. But by the very nature of concern the Good Samaritan reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?’.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

NOTE: If you missed yesterday’s segment, click on our archives to hear the first four Parables of Interest.

Parable Points of Interest:
5. A neighbor is more than the person “like me” who lives next door. What does “like me” mean? Do you have a neighbor the same skin color, ethnic background, religion, job, same number of children that you do? If not, how do you treat them?
6. A neighbor is anyone, anytime, anywhere.

How can you be a good neighbor? 1. Look for an opportunity – not a liability, The Good Samaritan saw an opportunity to serve, so he did! He did not hesitate; he just acted.
2. Feel compassion deeply. Compassion is not a heart or head thing; it comes from deep in your gut. Pastor Fleming asks this question: What would it be like to be that person? To have their scars and carry their burdens?

Tune in tomorrow for Pastor Fleming’s last suggestion and an excellent quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. concerning this Parable.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Listen as Pastor Fleming continues to discuss the Parable of the Good Samaritan…

The Jewish man couldn’t even utter the word “Samaritan”. Why did Jews dislike Samaritans so much?

Parable Points of Interest:
1. This story has a familiar, predictable context. After all, Jesus often spoke of helping others.
2. There is an unexpected twist. The Jew expected the Samaritan to hurt the man even more than the robbers did, but he helped him instead.
3. Jesus asked a question of his own to the Jewish man. Jesus was curious to see if the Jewish lawyer was really listening to what he had to say.
4. Ask this question: What kind of neighbor am I? The only thing we can control is out attitude toward our neighbors, no matter their attitude toward us.

Tune in tomorrow for the other two Parable Points of Interest, plus more!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Should we ask “who is my neighbor”? OR should we ask “what kind of neighbor am I”?

What does the law say about Eternal Life?

Do we really have to love everyone – no matter what – no questions asked?

Luke 10 “The parable of the Good Samaritan” This is a classic story of hatred, love, mercy, and forgiveness. Who was the better neighbor? (This should be obvious!)
