Title: Your Money Tree Wilting?
Topic: Focus on the Family
Discussed by Dr. Daniel Huerta
with Focus on the Family www.Family.org
The wilting money tree is a problem many parents are facing – even
those who are wealthy. It seems like the more money you have, the more stuff you
buy!
Danny Huerta recently offered his opinion concerning a
USA Today article by Brett Graff, which challenged parents to “strategically
about their spending decisions”. Listen in as he discusses the importance
of focusing on the family, not things.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Are too many families, parents in particular, spending too much on things and
activities for their kids and grandkids?
Is this mad rush to spend so much on things and activities for our kids leading
to a wilting money tree? Danny offers three money rules: make your own normal,
make God the center of everything, and teach kids the value of money. Listen in
as he expands on each.
How should parents and grandparents begin to think strategically about the way
money is used to provide activities and opportunity for kids?
Should parents re-evaluate their spending commitments during the summer months
before the school year begins? Sometimes it’s harder than “writing a PHD paper,”
Danny believes.

Title: Parenting Tech Obsessed Kids
Topic: Focus on the Family
Discussed by Dr. Daniel Huerta
with Focus on the Family www.Family.org
Parents, your children want you to pay attention to them.
Studies from both secular and Christian sources prove that your kids are hungry
for “interpersonal connectivity”. Just turn the cell phone and television off
and talk to your kids. If dinner is too hectic with after school activities,
then sit down at breakfast. If breakfast is too difficult, then try it at dinner
time, even if it is just twice a week. Put the phone down. Sit at the table, not
on the couch. And talk to your kids. If you are running from work to soccer to
piano to church, try turning off the radio and talking while you are driving –
even with a mouthful of CFA! After a few weeks, you will notice a dramatic
difference in not only your children, but you as well.
Danny Huerta is a Family Counselor with Focus on the Family. He is here
today to discuss “Parenting Today’s Kids in a Tech-Obsessed World”. As
a counselor with a private practice, he talks with parents frequently on this
very issue. For example, when a new video game is released, kids and teens want
to spend hours and hours perfecting their skills to get to the next level and
win. Listen in as Danny explains that oftentimes too much game or screen time
can actually change their brain and personality! “Their brains are actually
being restructured.”
Children and teens may not be thrilled with you when you begin to limit their
game and screen time, but over time they realize it really is the best thing. “We’re
not here to make our kids happy,” Danny reminds us. “We’re here to help
them lead lives that will have happiness.” Danny has some great tips for
parents who want to limit their kids game and screen time but aren’t sure where
to start. Listen in as he gives some helpful suggestions.
COMPUTER AND PHONE TIP: There are many online filtering
websites which ensure your kids are not viewing inappropriate material, such as:
Net Nanny, Covenant Eyes, Be Secure, and others. It is vital that you have a
protection on your computer, especially with curious teens in the house. There
are also apps for smart phones.
