Title: The Un-Prescription for Autism
Topic: Autism
Discussed by Dr. Janet Lintala
with Love Autism Health (www.loveautismhealth.com)
Part 1 of 2
April is Autism Awareness Month. The latest reports from the CDC (March, 2014) indicate that 1 of every 68 children is on the Autism Spectrum, nearly double the number from 2004. The rate for males is an astonishing 1 in 54.
New guest, Dr. Janet Lintala, is the author of "The Un-Prescription for Autism: A Natural Approach for a Calmer, Happier, and More Focused Child". Many people are still confused about autism, the causes, the symptoms, and any cures. “We are changing our approach to how we look at autism and how it starts,” Dr. Lintala says. “The new thinking is that autism has always been with us, but we just haven’t recognized it.” She goes on to express her personal opinion concerning environmental influences and other information that is being discusses in the medical field, including a new term “neuro-diversity”.
Truth be told, there really isn’t a sure-fire answer to what causes autism. Some say it’s the mercury in the shots babies and toddlers receive. Some say it’s the mom’s fault for doing something while she was pregnant. Some, like Dr. Lintala, believe the environment plays a role. But why is there such a big difference in the number of boys versus girls who have been diagnosed with autism? Dr. Lintala explains how the “diagnosis process” has worked in the past and why they are changing it for this very reason.
Autism has reached such a high level that the disorder is gaining more and more attention. This is GOOD NEWS! More money is poured into research for causes and cures for autism than ever before. Awareness is spreading like wildfire. A few decades ago, only 1 in 10,000 children were diagnosed with autism because so many children were dismissed with “behavior issues” or fell into other categories. Dr. Lintala says, “You can’t see what you don’t know.” Well, people know now! Listen to the next segment as she discusses more from her new book, “The Un-Prescription for Autism: A Natural Approach for a Calmer, Happier, and More Focused Child”.

Title: Part 2 of 2 - The Un-Prescription for Autism
Topic: Autism
Discussed by Dr. Janet Lintala
with Love Autism Health (www.loveautismhealth.com)
Dr. Janet Lintala is the mother of three boys with a variety of issues such as Autism Spectrum disorder, Tourette syndrome, OCD, anxiety, and ADHD. She has a B.A. in Genetics and graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic, but all her studies could not prepare her for that first diagnosis nearly twenty years ago. In fact, she recalls feeling crushed and grieving the future. It took her a while, but she finally came to the conclusion that his diagnosis was not a death sentence. “He was still the bright, happy, loving child I had before,” Dr. Lintala states.
Dr. Lintala has made it her mission to help other parents struggling with that same fear and doubt. So many parents want to “fix” their child – they want a cure. Right now, there isn’t one. But there is hope! “Autism itself is not the problem. The autistic brain is amazing!” Dr. Lintala declares. “It’s the associated health and behavior issues that are so heartbreaking.”
This is exactly why she wrote her book, “The Un-Prescription for Autism: A Natural Approach for a Calmer, Happier, and More Focused Child”. She acknowledges that her son would have had a much happier childhood if she had only been given the same information and help when he was diagnosed.
“What heals the child, heals the family,” Dr. Lintala likes to say. Having a child with autism is challenging and even exhausting at times, but it doesn’t have to be hopeless.
“We need to shift our thinking and understand what’s actually going on with these kids. They’re not bad kids; they’re just having a hard time dealing with the world,” Dr. Lintala reminds us.
“Kindness, love, and time” are the three things she encourages family members and friends to give those who have autistic children. Search online and discover more about autism disorders so you can be a team-player, not a spectator on the sidelines.
