Title: Sexual Abuse in the Church
Topic: Sexual Abuse in the Church
Discussed by Dr. Harry Pearson
with Focus on the Family www.Family.org

Disclaimer: Use caution when listening to this segment around young children. Issues discussed might be upsetting or hard for little ones to understand.

More than a 10 women have come forward with allegations of sexual abuse from powerful Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. And, unfortunately, research shows that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused/assaulted before the age of 18, regardless of socio-economic demographic. Yes, this is even true in churches across America.

Listen as Dr. Harry Pearson, counselor at Focus on the Family with military training on this issue, shares more about the aftermath of sexual abuse and how to prevent it within the church.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Does sexual abuse leave scars for life?

Are too many churches ignoring this serious issue?

Do most predators threaten to harm their victims’ family in order to silence them?

Parents and grandparents should not be afraid of leaving children with volunteers during Sunday School or other church events. But should they still be cautious?

If abuse has occurred, what steps should be taken to for recovery?

Concerning the news… If/when a child/teen hears information concerning this issue, questions are sure to follow. Listen as Dr. Pearson offers some advice for this situation. “Sitting down and talking with your kids about sensitive issues is important so they know that you are safe to talk to,” he states.

Title: Ashley Madison Hack
Topic: Marriage
Discussed by Dr. Harry Pearson
with Focus on the Family www.Family.org

Sometime internet hackers are applauded and sometime they are hated. The Ashley Madison cheating-for-married-people hack has affected millions of people – celebrities, athletes, average Joes, and even pastors and leaders in the church. But was this a good or a bad hack?

Dr. Harry Pearson is an Addictions and Pastoral Counselor with Focus on the Family.  When people – men or women – use a website like Ashley Madison, there are obvious underlying issues. First, Dr. Pearson urges all couples to seek pre-marital counseling before you even get married. Understanding God’s meaning for marriage and placing Him above all is key.

Second, Dr. Pearson says prayer is essential to every marriage. When the divorce rate for Christians is almost equal to couples who do not attend church, it becomes a spiritual problem. Pray with and for your spouse every day. Listen in as he discusses other key dos and donts for couples.

If you or someone you know needs marital advice, please call Focus on the Family at 800.A.FAMILY. They can help counsel you and will help you contact a licensed Christian marriage counselor in your area. Don’t wait for an affair to make a change because then it may be too late.

Title: Habits and Addictions: Don't be Obsessed
Topic: Habits and Addictions
Discussed by Dr. Harry Pearson
with Focus on the Family www.Family.org

Sometimes bad habits become bad addictions. Celebrities aren’t the only ones who have problems with drugs and alcohol. It could be your neighbor, a co-worker, a family member, a child, or even the person sitting next to you in the pew.

Dr. Harry Pearson is an Addictions and Pastoral Counselor with Focus on the Family  Dr. Pearson encourages us to take care of ourselves, first and foremost. If we take care of ourselves and eat healthy and get enough sleep, we won’t need drugs or alcohol to “cope” with the curveballs life throws at us. “These substances are very addictive. You will lose control. No matter how hard you try. No matter what you say. You will lose control.

Most people start abusing prescription drugs, drinking too much, or using illegal drugs to “feel better”. But GOD wants to help you feel better! Dr. Pearson discusses some of the warning signs of someone who might have a bad habit that is quickly becoming a bad addiction. “An addiction problem is beyond your ability to conquer. You need help. You need to be in a program,” Dr. Pearson says. “Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed. We are all in the Body of Christ,” Dr. Pearson continues. “You don’t have to be alone. You don’t have to feel guilty.”

If you or someone you know is suffering from an addiction, please call Focus on the Family at 855-771-4357 or go to your church – any church – to seek help from a pastor. They care. They love you. They can help. But more importantly, God loves you and wants to help you find your way to Him. “Do not define yourself by your feelings. Define yourself by your identity in Christ,” Dr. Pearson urges.
