Title: A FINISHING FAITH
Topic: More
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Over the past few months, Pastor Jarrett Stephens has been telling stories about ordinary people who trusted God in extraordinary ways from the Book of Hebrews. And maybe – just maybe – you have been challenged to step beyond complacency and embrace a faith that is active, resilient, and fully surrendered.

This week, Pastor Jarrett finally completes this fantastic series, MORE, with an emphasis on finishing this life strong, reminding us that our focus determines our finish.

Scripture Reference: Hebrews 12:1-3

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon notes here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

KEEP YOUR FOCUS: Look Up

Why should our focus continually be on looking UP to Jesus? Are you following his example? Do you have JOY in this race called LIFE? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that Jesus bore the WORST RACE EVER – and he STILL finished strong!

FINAL THOUGHTS: Have you hit a wall in your Christian journey?

Look around at the witnesses. They have gone before us and are encouraging us on the journey.

Look within and, by God’s grace, get rid of anything hindering you from running well. Throw off the sin that is weighing you down. Look ahead and stay in your lane. Run YOUR race.

Look up and set your eyes on Jesus. Gaze on Jesus. Focus on Jesus.

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

KEEP YOUR FOCUS: Look Within

Do ever feel convicted by the Holy Spirit? How can that be a GOOD thing? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that God only wants the best for His children, saying: “We serve a God who loves untangling people from their sin and putting [us] back in the race. It’s what our God does!” Amen!

KEEP YOUR FOCUS: Look Ahead

What is the race set before you? Are you on the right path that God has called you to? Is everyone’s race different?

What is our future reward? Pastor Jarrett reminds us of the promises found in Hebrews (and the rest of the Bible).

KEEP YOUR FOCUS: Look Up

Who are you looking to? Are you looking UP to Jesus? Pastor Jarrett explains what the word “look” means in these verses. It’s a beautiful comparison!

How can those in the Hall of Faith encourage us?

NOTE: No matter what church you go to, join a Sunday school class, Life Group, or small group! What are you waiting for?!?

KEEP YOUR FOCUS: Look Within

What is hindering you from running a fully faithful Christian walk? What do you need to throw aside because it is not helping your faith? What do you need to lay down?

Are you trying to run this Christian race as a sprinter? Pastor Jarrett recalls the three-legged race during Field Day in school, where it’s impossible to go fast and go far at the same time!

Day 5

MANY PEOPLE – EVEN CHRISTIANS – ARE TEMPTED TO BELIEVE THAT HAVING A CHRISTIAN FAITH MEANS THAT LIFE WILL BE ALL SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS. NO PROBLEMS. NO BAD STUFF. IT’S ALL GOOD. WRONG!

There are just a few weeks left of this fantastic series, and this week Pastor Jarrett looks at the final verses, breaking them down into three sections as he offers hope and encouragement as we live a Triumphant Faith.

Scripture Reference: Hebrews 11:32-40

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon notes here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is God trustworthy? Has He proven Himself over and over and over again? Pastor Jarrett quotes one commentator: “If they were able to trust God when they had so little revelation from Him, what are we doing for God with a completed revelation?”

ENTRUST YOUR LIFE AND OTHERS TO GOD

You probably entrust your life to God, but do you entrust your loved ones to Him, as well?

Are you looking at your past and wondering what your future will look like? Do you live too much in the here and now? Or do you look at the bigger picture, knowing that God has a purpose and a plan for everything – the good and the bad?

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Whether you have a faith that delivers or a faith that endures, if you have faith in God, it will be a triumphant faith!!

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett reminded us that Christians around the world are experiencing persecution – including death – for their faith TODAY. Many also seem to experience hardship after hardship. Do they simply just not have enough faith?

How do you handle difficult situations? Do you give up because you don’t think it’s worth it? Or do you push through, knowing God has a perfect plan? Pastor Jarrett looks back at others in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews.

Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett encourages us to really trust God and see the bigger picture.

Why did the author of Hebrews switch gears from victories and deliverances to torture, imprisonment, and even death for those who had faith? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that Christians around the world are experiencing persecution – including death – for their faith TODAY.

A FAITH THAT DELIVERS (vs 32-25a)

Why didn’t the author of Hebrews mention the accomplishments of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel? What did they all have in common?

If all these men had very imperfect pasts, what can we learn from them? What encouragement can we gain? Pastor Jarrett reminds us: “Having a faith that delivers, doesn’t depend on you or me. It depends on God!”

In addition, why didn’t the author of Hebrews mention how much faith these men had? Did he mention the “faith count” of ANY person in this chapter? HINT: Nope. WHY? Because it doesn’t matter!

A FAITH THAT ENDURES (vs 35b-38)

Why did the author of Hebrews switch gears from victories and deliverances to torture, imprisonment, and even death for those who had faith? Pastor Jarrett reminds us of the persecution that others in the Bible experienced.

Day 5

WHAT IS CAUSING YOU TO NOT TAKE THAT STEP OF FAITH? DOES IT SEEM IMPOSSIBLE, ILLOGICAL, AND UNBEARABLE?

Over the past few months, Pastor Jarrett Stephens has been telling stories about ordinary people who trusted God in extraordinary ways from the Book of Hebrews. And maybe – just maybe – you will be challenged to step beyond complacency and embrace a faith that is active, resilient, and fully surrendered.

This week, Pastor Jarrett looks at three different people – Moses, Joshua, and Rahab – who all trusted God in very difficult circumstances and everything turned out just perfectly.

SOME GREAT QUOTES SHARED BY PASTOR JARRETT:

A.W. Tozer: “God never calls His people to play it safe.”

Elisabeth Elliot: “If we are to have faith, we must learn to risk – risk our comfort, our plans, even our lives – for the sake of Christ.” Pastor Jarrett shares WHY Elizabeth said this. It’s an amazing story!

Louie Giglio: “Faith and risk are inseparable. You can’t stay in the boat and walk on the water at the same time.”

Martin Luther King Jr.: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

Hudson Taylor: “Unless there is an element of risk in our exploits for God, there is no need for faith.” Pastor Jarrett recommends reading the book: “Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret”.

Scripture Reference: Hebrews 11:29-31

Questions/Issues Discussed:

A RISKY FAITH TRUSTS GOD WHEN THE COST SEEMS UNBEARABLE

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett told the story of Rahab, the prostitute who helped the Israelites when they conquered Jericho. (Joshua 2:1-11)

Did Rahab know who God was? If not, where did her faith come from? How did she know that helping Joshua and the Israelites was the right thing to do? (James 2:25)

Did you know that JESUS is a descendant of RAHAB??? AMAZING!!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Whatever God is calling you to do – even if it seems impossible, illogical, and unbearable – take the step and make the move in FAITH.

A RISKY FAITH TRUSTS GOD WHEN THE COMMAND SEEMS ILLOGICAL

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett told the story of Joshua leading the Israelites to conquer Jericho, which seemed crazy! (Joshua 6:1-5)

What are we commanded to do that seems crazy? Pastor Jarrett discusses prayer, loving our enemies, tithing, and rejoicing in suffering. He also gives a few examples of people who did something crazy, but everything turned out perfectly.

A RISKY FAITH TRUSTS GOD WHEN THE COST SEEMS UNBEARABLE

Who was Rahab? (Joshua 2:1-11)

Why was she specifically mentioned in the Hall of Faith?

A RISKY FAITH TRUSTS GOD WHEN THE COMMAND SEEMS ILLOGICAL

What if what God is asking of us just seems crazy?

Who was Joshua? Why was he the man in charge after Moses passed away?

Why was he commanded to conquer the city of Jericho? HOW was he commanded to conquer them?

How big was Jericho? How many soldiers did they have?

Day 2

A RISKY FAITH TRUSTS GOD WHEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES SEEM IMPOSSIBLE

Why was Moses commanded to part The Red Sea? Did the people trust Moses to take care of them? (Exodus 14:10-14)

When you face an impossible circumstance in life that prompts fear, will you freeze up and start whining and complaining – airing out your frustrations on God or someone else? Or will you turn to God and cry out “God, I trust you!” (Exodus 14:19-22) Pastor Jarrett offers some encouragement and hope…

Day 5

WHAT IS A COURAGEOUS FAITH? A COURAGEOUS FAITH CHOOSES TO OBEY GOD DESPITE THE COST AND HOW CRAZY IT SEEMS, BECAUSE FAITH SEES WHAT THE WORLD CANNOT SEE.

This week, Pastor Jarrett looks at the courageous faith of Moses and his parents.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

After Moses left his home with the Pharoah and went back to his people, did his faith waiver or grow stronger? Pastor Jarrett reminds us of Moses’ actions which led him to flee to the wilderness for 40 years alone and what happened next that proved he had a crazy, obedient faith.

What was Moses’ reward for having a courageous faith? What is OUR reward for having a courageous faith? Can our courageous faith really have an impact on others?

FINAL THOUGHTS:

If you put your eyes of faith on what is unseen (the eternal reward) you will not live for the things of this world.

JOSEPH

How did Joseph live his life? Was he faithful and trusting in God?

How did God repay Joseph’s faithfulness?

BOTTOM LINE: Joseph was an important guy. He could have been buried with the Pharaohs and important people. Why, then, did he insist that his bones be sent back to and buried in Israel? (Exodus 13:19)

How did God test Abraham’s faith? Have you ever felt tested? How did you handle that test? (1 Peter 1:6-7) Yesterday, we shared a great quote from Pastor Jarrett. If you missed it, check out the archives.

Do tests help shape and form us? Do tests strengthen, develop, and define our faith? Do tests help us be more like Jesus?

Maybe a better question is this: Do you ever get mad at God because He is testing you? Does it ever feel personal? Have you ever wondered what in the world God’s plan actually is because it seems so bizarre? (Genesis 22:2) Pastor Jarrett imagines how Abraham must have felt taking his only son, Isaac, up the mountainside knowing the task set before him.

How did God test Abraham’s faith? Have you ever felt tested? How did you handle that test? (1 Peter 1:6-7) Pastor Jarrett says: “God is never done testing us. Our life will be a series of tests that God either puts us through or, at a minimum, He allows us to go through so that who we truly love, what we truly follow, [and] the sincerity of our faith…will be revealed.

DON’T WASTE YOUR WAIT: Application

Have hope in God’s promises. (Hebrews 11:11; Isaiah 40:31; Psalm 25:3a; Psalm 27:14; Psalm 31:24) Pastor Jarrett shares a sweet story about his own mother making a promise to him as a child and the many, many years he waited patiently for her to fulfill that promise.

Find strength in community. (1 Peter 3)

Experience joy in the journey. (Genesis 21:1-7)

FINAL THOUGHTS:

You were never meant to walk through life alone. If you want true joy, even when it’s tough, you can find it in Jesus.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

LESSONS FROM SARAH: There will be moments of doubt.

Remember Sarah’s reaction to God’s promise of a baby when she was 90? She laughed and doubted God! Then she did something totally crazy… Read Genesis 16:1-6.

While in the waiting period, have you ever been tempted to take matters into your own hands? Have you ever actually jumped the gun? How did that turn out? (Proverbs 3:5-6)

LESSONS FROM SARAH: There will be moments of difficulty.

How long have you been waiting? Have there been times that you thought you couldn’t take another step and couldn’t take another breath? Have you ever wanted to just give up? Pastor Jarrett reminds us: “God never promised us an easy journey. He promised us His presence on the journey.”

Who is guiding your decisions – God or the world?

DON’T WASTE YOUR WAIT: Application

Have hope in God’s promises. (Hebrews 11:11; Isaiah 40:31; Psalm 25:3a; Psalm 27:14; Psalm 31:24)

Tune in tomorrow for the final two applications.

DON’T WASTE YOUR WAIT:

What is the purpose of the Book of Hebrews?

Will “good things really come to those who wait”? Pastor Jarrett reminds us of others who waited patiently and the Lord blessed them abundantly.

Can waiting teach us dependence, trust, faith, and humility? Can waiting also teach us submission to the will of God?

LESSONS FROM SARAH: There will be moments of disbelief.

How old were Sarah and Abraham when God told them they were to be parents? What was their response? (Genesis 17:15-19; Genesis 18:9-15)

What has been your reaction in the past to situations God has placed you in? Have you reacted similarly to Abraham and Sarah? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that it’s okay to be shocked and amazed, but to have faith and continue to wait patiently. After all, nothing is too difficult for God.

WHAT DOES GOD SEE FROM US WHEN HE LOOKS DOWN AT THE WORLD AND THE EVIL AND CORRUPTION THAT IS EVERYWHERE? WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO RIGHT THE WRONG? ARE YOU REPENTANT AND PRAYING FOR NOT ONLY YOUR OWN LIFE, BUT FOR YOUR NEIGHBOR, COMMUNITY, STATE, COUNTRY, AND THE WORLD?

FEAR GOD

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett began discussing the importance of having a healthy fear of the Lord.

What does “fear of God” actually mean? Pastor Jarrett says: “Honoring God from so deep within that it motivates us to live a life wholly pleasing to Him.”

Do you tremble in fear of God? Tremper Longman (Old Testament professor at Westmont College): “One properly fears Yahweh because he is the most powerful being in the universe. Only fools would not be afraid of a being who has the power of life and death over them. Such persons do not understand their place in the cosmos and thus do not know how to act in the world. All other wisdom builds on this point and there is no wisdom without it.”

What are some other Scriptures about fearing the Lord? (Proverbs 9:10; Deuteronomy 10:12; Ecclesiastes 12:13)

OBEY GOD

Why should we obey God – no matter what is asked?

Why should we obey God – no matter what others think?

Why should we obey God – no matter the cost?

FEAR GOD

Why should we fear God?

Does fear really keep us grounded in our faith?

Do many people today lack a healthy fear of the Lord? Pastor Jarrett believes social media is proof that people have lost not only their faith, but also their fear of God.

So… what does “fear of God” actually mean? Pastor Jarrett says that to have a fear of God means “honoring God from so deep within that it motivates us to live a life wholly pleasing to Him.”

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Can “putting on the full armor of God” really help us? Pastor Jarrett believes – and explains why – the answer is absolutely YES, saying: “Sin takes you farther than where you want to go, it will keep you longer than you want to stay, and it will cost you far more than you are willing to pay.”

Is the Holy Spirit the Governor of your life? Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to restrain you? What is the result of not allowing the Holy Spirit to be Governor of your life?

How does Scripture describe the time that Noah lived and the reason for the flood?

Total disregard for the marriage covenant (Gen. 4:19)

Rapid advancement in technology (Gen. 4:22)

Widespread violence and the devaluing of human life (Gen. 4:23)

A population explosion (Gen. 6:1)

Rampant evil (Gen. 6:5)

Immorality and corruption as normative patterns within human relationships (Gen. 6:12)

Preoccupation with temporary matters (Luke 17:27)

Materialism (Luke 17:28)

Rejection of the authority of God’s Word (1 Peter 3:18-20)

No concern for God in either belief or conduct (2 Peter 2:5)

Is God aware of the state of our world today? Does He care? Is He even paying attention? Pastor Jarrett passionately reminds us that God absolutely knows what is happening, but it’s our responsibility to speak up about the mess!

A FAITH THAT SPEAKS GIVES GOD THE VERY BEST.

Pastor Jarrett Stephens began a new sermon series last week entitled MORE telling stories about ordinary people who trusted God in extraordinary ways from the Book of Hebrews. And maybe – just maybe – you will be challenged to step beyond complacency and embrace a faith that is active, resilient, and fully surrendered.

This week, he preaches about the faith of Abel – yes, the Abel who was killed by his own brother, Cain. If Abel was so faithful, why did he die in the manner in which he did?

Scripture Reference: Hebrews 11:4

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

WORSHIP GOD SINCERELY

Is your worship sincere? (Proverbs 16:2; Proverbs 21:2; Jeremiah 17:10; 1 Samuel 16:7)

Does our offering matter to God? Or is the HEART of the offeror what He pays attention to? Does God look past WHAT we’re giving to WHY we’re giving? (Romans 12:1; Colossians 3:17)

Are you worshipping God with a faith rooted in trust?

GIVE TO GOD GENEROUSLY

WAIT a minute! Pastor Jarrett has been talking all week about how it isn’t how much we give, but why and how we give. So, does the amount that we give really matter? Pastor Jarrett uses the story about the widow’s sacrificial gift from Mark 12:41-44 to explain what it means to give generously.

What did Abel bring to God as a sacrifice as an act of worship? Was it truly a faithful sacrifice? Did he give generously to God?

NOTE: Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Jarrett shares how he makes his mother’s famous Jalapeño Corn dish!

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

WORSHIP GOD SINCERELY

Abel’s offering to God was considered to be an act of worship. Why was Cain’s offering rejected? (Genesis 4:3-4a)

When and why did people begin offering slain animals to God as an act of worship – not just as a sacrifice? (Genesis 3:21; Hebrews 9:22)

What story did Jesus tell that relates to the faith of Abel? What word did Jesus use to describe Abel’s faith? (Matthew 23)

How was Cain described in the New Testament? (1 John 3:12)

Does our offering matter to God? Or is the HEART of the offeror what He pays attention to?

FAITH: HOW TO DESCRIBE IT

Can faith unlock God’s mighty power? (Mathew 9:29; Matthew 21:21-22)

Does the size of our faith matter? Does the size of our faith impress God? Does the size of our faith mean God will listen to our pleas and prayers first before others? HINT: No. No. And no.

Have you ever thought about how your faith pleases God? Pastor Jarrett urges us to imagine the huge smile on God’s face every time we demonstrate an unwavering faith and trust in His powerful plan for our lives.

How can we increase our faith? (Romans 10:17)

FAITH: DECLARE IT

Can we “speak” things into existence? Can we just magically make positive things appear in our lives? Pastor Jarrett shares the Greek and Hebrew words for this: Bologna and Hogwash!

Pastor Jarrett shares 3 great, short prayers we can begin praying NOW to increase our faith:
Lord, I choose to experience MORE of you by walking by faith, not by sight.
Lord, because you can do MORE than I could ever ask, think, or imagine, I will pray bold prayers in faith and will leave the results up to you.
Lord, nothing is impossible with you, so help me to attempt MORE for your glory.

Can we have faith in something that we have already seen? (Romans 8:24b)

What is the meaning of “conviction” as it pertains to Scripture and faith?

Why do some people describe faith as the sixth sense? (Romans 12:3)

How do we exercise faith every day? Pastor Jarrett offers just a few examples…
