QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Pastor Jarrett shares a sweet memory of teaching his kids how to swim and jump into the pool into his arms. He never just left them there to fend for themselves! Isn’t this how God is with us? We can run away and ignore Him, but He will never, ever leave us alone to do life on our own.

When and how did Jesus predict his death to his disciples? (Matthew 17:22-23, Matthew 26:45b)

How and why are the hands of God both the safest and scariest place to be? Did Jesus entrust his spirit to the safe-keeping hands of God? If he did, how could we do no less? (John 10:28; Hebrews 10:31; Acts 7:59)

Pastor Jarrett gives a preview of the new series he will begin the week after Easter. Reference: Apostles Creed

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

How was Jesus’s death on the cross the completion of his ministry and work on earth? Was this a cry of victory?

WHAT WAS FINISHED? Suffering

Did Jesus suffer, experiencing human emotions and pain? Philip Ryken: “From beginning to end, Jesus Christ lived a life of suffering. From the moment he left the heavenly palaces of light to the moment darkness descended upon him on the cross, he suffered.” (John 1:11)

Who despised and rejected Jesus? (Isaiah 53:3; Matthew 8:20) Pastor Jarrett reminds us today that Jesus came over 2,000 years ago as a “suffering servant” but he will return one day as a King!

Why was it necessary for Jesus to suffer, specifically on the cross? (Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 4:14-16)

WHAT WAS FINISHED? Sacrifices

Are sacrifices sometimes required to complete a task?

What did people do for sacrifices before the death of Jesus? Pastor Jarrett compares the animal sacrifices to swiping a credit card. Who foots the bill? Someone else!

How was the death of Jesus the ultimate sacrifice? Did Jesus “foot the bill” for us? (Hebrews 10:3-4; John 1:29)

Who was the invitation for? Everyone! (Isaiah 55:1; Revelation 22:17; Revelation 7:15-17)

What are you thirsting for? Money? Status? A relationship? A better career? A new house/car? Can anything earthly satisfy our thirst? (Jeremiah 2:13) Pastor Jarrett passionately says: “If it’s not a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, it is a broken cistern and it holds no water!” Why/how is the devil a “distracter”? (Matthew 11:28)

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Was Jesus fulfilling prophecy when he cried out for a drink? (Psalm 69:20-21)
What is the significance of the “hyssop branch”? (Exodus 12:12-24) Pastor Jarrett compares the Passover when Moses commanded the elders to dip hyssop branches in the blood of the sacrificed lambs to the hyssop branch being dipped in sour wine and held to the lips of Jesus to drink.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

A WORD OF AGONY:
Intensity

Is thirst one of the most basic human needs? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that Jesus was fully human and he experienced human feelings and emotions.

When Jesus asked for a drink while dying on the cross, was he experiencing intense physical pain?

How does Psalm 22:14-18 predict and describe the crucifixion of Jesus? Did death on a cross even exist when David wrote this Psalm?

Why did Jesus refuse a drink of wine at Golgotha? What is the “cup of God’s wrath”? (Matthew 27:33-34)

BONUS FACT: There were 29 Old Testament prophecies that were fulfilled in the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. During his life, death, and resurrection, there were a total of 332 of Old Testament prophecies fulfilled! What are the odds of this happening without a perfect God who has a perfect plan? Pastor Jarrett gives some amazing statistics.

Therefore, he briefly discusses the third word at the beginning of the sermon (Monday’s segment): A Word of Comfort.

Why did Jesus “usually” refer to God as “Father”? (John 17; Matthew 5-7)
Did God ever disapprove of Jesus? Of course not! (Matthew 3:17)
Did nearly everyone in Jesus’ inner circle abandon him before his death?

Title: A Word of Anguish
Topic: Words in Red
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 1

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the sermon series: “Words in Red: Seven Last Sayings from the Cross”. This week, he focuses on the words of anguish Jesus uttered using Matthew 27:45-46.

NOTE: This week is actually the fourth word from Jesus on the cross. Pastor Jarrett didn’t want to pass up the chance to have RT Kendall preach last week, but he also wanted to stay on track with the series, which will conclude on Easter Sunday. Therefore, he briefly discusses the third word at the beginning of the sermon (Monday’s segment): A Word of Comfort.

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

STATEMENT #3: A Word of Comfort (John 19:26-27)
Why did Jesus single out his mother? Up until now, Jesus had not mentioned himself one single time.
Why was family so important to Jesus?

STATEMENT #4: A Word of Anguish (Matthew 27:45-46)
What does anguish mean?
Did Jesus feel anguish on the cross?
Was this the first statement Jesus made in darkness?
Book Reference: “Cries from the Cross” by Erwin Lutzer

SUFFERING
Why was death on a cross so painful?
Did Isaiah prophesy about the death of Jesus? (Isaiah 52:14)
Did Jesus suffer emotionally on the cross? (Matthew 27)
Why did Jesus quote Psalm 22 when he was dying on the cross?

Pastor Jarrett reminds us today that we all have times of suffering in our lives. He says: “They come in all shapes and sizes… something is going to happen… that is going to squeeze you.” BUT how did Jesus react to the suffering? He called out to God!

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back. /strong>

Day 5

FACT: One out of every one persons will die. Shocker, right? Where will you spend eternity when you die?

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the sermon series: “Words in Red: Seven Last Sayings from the Cross”. This week, he focuses on salvation.

Scripture Passage: Luke 23:32-43

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Martin Luther: The Great Exchange 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

HOW CAN WE BE ASSURED OF LIFE AFTER DEATH?
Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett explained why “Jesus, the King of the Jews” was written above his cross and the choices the criminals who died next to him determined where they would spend eternity.
So how can WE be saved?
Acknowledge that you are a sinner.
Acknowledge that you need a Savior who is sinless.
Pastor Jarrett adds: “Be humble.”

WHAT WILL LIFE AFTER DEATH BE LIKE?
Will all Christians who acknowledge their sin and need for a Savior live in Heaven – paradise – forever?
What will paradise look like? (2 Corinthians 5:8)
Will Jesus really return one day and make a new heaven and a new earth? (Revelation 21:1-4)

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

HOW CAN WE BE ASSURED OF LIFE AFTER DEATH?
Why was “Jesus, the King of the Jews” written above his cross? (Luke 23:38; John 19:16b-22) Pastor Jarrett also goes back to the birth of Jesus to explain further. (Matthew 1:20-21)
What led to the criminal’s change of heart?
He acknowledged his own sin. (Romans 3:23)
He acknowledged the innocence of Jesus. (Luke 23:41b)
He sensed the Spirit of God drawing him close. (John 6:44)
So how can WE be saved? Do the same thing the criminal on the cross did!

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

WHO CAN HAVE LIFE AFTER DEATH?
Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett reflected on the thief on the cross who was reviling Jesus one minute and defending him the next. Pastor Jarrett said: “If there was ever a person who was an unworthy candidate for salvation, it was this criminal.”

Today, Pastor Jarrett shares about a book by author Philip Yancy that included information about the mass murderer Jeffrey Dahmer. Did Jesus die for him, too? How could that even be possible? Wasn’t the Apostle Paul a murderer, as well? (1 Timothy 1:15) Aren’t we all just as sinful as these men?

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

What does the Christian Worldview state about salvation? Pastor Jarrett offers several Scriptures: Acts 4:12; Acts 16:30-31; Romans 10:9-10, 13; Ephesians 2:8

Must every person reflect on the questions: “Am I saved?” Will every person answer that question when they die?

Do many people doubt their salvations? Pastor Jarrett admits he has many times!

WHO CAN HAVE LIFE AFTER DEATH?

Can anyone be saved? Is anyone “too far gone” for Jesus to save? Pastor Jarrett reminds us of the prophecy in Isaiah 53:11-12.

How does Jesus’ “red letters” response to the thief on the cross prove that ANYONE can be saved? (Mark 15:27-32) Pastor Jarrett says: “If there was ever a person who was an unworthy candidate for salvation, it was this criminal.”

Pastor Jarrett shares about a dear friend who is more like a grandmother who recently passed away and reads from Psalm 90:10 and 12.

Did God hardwire us to know, deep down, that there is something more to life than “life”? (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

Does every religion acknowledge that there is an afterlife? How do we know, as Christians, where we will spend eternity?

Title: A Word of Forgiveness
Topic: Words in Red
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens begins a new sermon series: “Words in Red: Seven Last Sayings from the Cross”. This week, he focuses on forgiveness.

Scripture Passage: Luke 23:33-34

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Was Jesus’ prayer “Father, forgive them” answered? Absolutely. 100%.

What can we learn from Jesus’ prayer of intercession on the cross?

Evangelical speaker, author, and radio personality Erwin Lutzer once stated: “Forgiveness sounds like a marvelous idea – until you’re the one who has to do it.”

Pastor Jarrett shares about the opportunity he has every semester to talk with masters-level college students about forgiveness and conflict resolution. He talks about the abuse he suffered as a child by a coach and the forgiveness he gave that man. Pastor Jarrett says: “If God can forgive me, who am I to not be able to forgive someone else?” Amazing, amazing story…

FINAL THOUGHTS: Matthew 6:14-15 The forgiven, forgive.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Why didn’t Jesus stop his own death? Why did he, instead, ask forgiveness for US? (Philippians 2:6-8; John 10:18)

Is any sin overlooked by God? Are all sins treated equally by God?

Did Jesus really die for the people who nailed him on the cross? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that, although we weren’t physically there, WE ALL nailed him on the cross – every single human who has lived, is living, or who will live in the future. (Ephesians 1:7; Psalm 103:12)

Are you ready to be held accountable for your sins when you die? English Bible Teacher and Theologian A.W. Pink said: “Sin is always sin in the sight of God whether we are conscious of it or not. Sins of ignorance need atonement just as truly as do conscious sins. God is holy, and He will not lower His standard of righteousness to the level of our ignorance; ignorance is not innocence.”

Was Jesus’ prayer “Father, forgive them” answered? Absolutely. 100%.
