Topic: Minor Prophets
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

Mark Lanier continues the Minor Prophets with a look at Malachi. This week, he conveys the importance of learning the background and context of the people and events before Malachi’s time.

To view Mark Lanier’s video for this lesson, click here.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Yesterday, Mark discussed Malachi 1:1-3b, reminding us that God loves us – always. BUT there are times when we must face punishment for disobeying Him and His commands.

MALACHI 1:6-8, 11
What does “name” mean in Hebrew?
Why did God accuse the priests of despising Him?
How were the people disobeying God’s commands?
Does our character matter? Why does God’s character matter?

MALACHI 3:10
Why should we “put God to the test”? Is this the only place in the entire Bible that God says to put Him to the test?
How is this verse sound financial advice?
Is tithing really important? Is not tithing like stealing from God?
What does “tithe” mean?

POINTS FOR HOME:
Hear from the God of love. He has a message for you!
Don’t be fake with God. After all, He knows everything about you!

MALACHI 1:1-3b

Why was this prophecy for Israel?

What specific kingdom of Israel was this prophecy for?

What does Malachi mean in Hebrew?

When will/does God love us? Sometimes? When we’re good? When we love Him? When the time is right? God loves us ALWAYS! (1 Corinthians 1:13:4-8a)

Why did God love Jacob but hate his brother Esau? Does this mean Esau specifically or a nation group?

How can God’s love for us be compared to His love for Israel?

How does God make His sovereign choices? (Romans 9:13; Genesis 29:31-35)

Remember: God has chosen you! (Ephesians 1:3-10)

ZECHARIAH 1:13,17 The God of the Future

What do you find comfort in? Food? Shopping? Books?

WHO should we find comfort in? God!

Mark uses an illustration at the end of his lesson using ice cream and hot fudge sauce. What happens to the ice cream when the hot fudge sauce is poured over it? It melts!! What happens in our lives when we ask God to melt our hearts – to save us – to forgive us – to change us?

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE: Psalm 137

CONTEXT OF ZECHARIAH:

Yesterday, Mark discussed when and why the Promised Land (Israel) was divided into two kingdoms and a few of the kings that reigned during that time. He closed the segment with the song, “Rivers of Babylon” by Lamb

What happened to the people of Jerusalem when it fell?

When did the Babylonians conquer the Assyrians? Who and when conquered the Babylonians?

When were the Jews allowed to return to Israel? Was it a tough time for them?

ZECHARIAH 1:1 The God of the Past (Part 1)

What time of year was it when “the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah”?

What does the name Zechariah mean? Mark discusses an Old Testament scholar, Brevard Childs, who wrote a paper on Zechariah. This is really interesting – and funny!

Does God remember our past? Yes – He has a terrific memory! Will He “forget” our past? Yes – because He loves us!

Who was King David? What did he accomplish?

Who was King Solomon? What did he accomplish?

Why did Israel split into two kingdoms? Who was the king at this time?

Which new kingdom was “good” and which new kingdom was “bad”? What did God to the “bad” kingdom? Did the “good” kingdom eventually turn “bad”, too? What was God’s response?

Theme #4 from Haggai: He is With You
How do we know that God is on our side? Is God always ready to help us, if only we would ask? Dr. Fleming shares a story about a dad who asked his son to move stones in a riverbed…

Theme #5 from Haggai: He is Faithful
What promise did God fulfill to the people of Judah? Did they have to wait until they were in full obedience to witness the promise? Will He do the same thing for you?

What is the sum of the themes from Haggai? God is loving, merciful, forgiving, persistently forgiving, sovereign, and able. (Philippians 1:6)

POINTS FOR HOME:
What did God say to you through this lesson? What’s on your to-do list?

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Theme #3 from Haggai: Go and Do
Yesterday, Dr. Fleming discussed the importance of building a temple to worship in and what the temple represented.
Had the people forgotten God’s promise? Do YOU ever forget God’s promise to you?
Does obedience make God happy? Does God still love us when we are disobedient?
What happens when we are obedient to God?
Why is it so hard to just “go and do it”? Shouldn’t it be super easy?
Why doesn’t God just snap His fingers and do it for us?
Does God want us to stay in our “comfort zone”?
Why must we experience difficult situations?
Dr. Fleming mentions the book, “Experiencing God” by Henry Blackaby. Click the lesson link above and fast-forward to the 58-minute mark to view the “Seven Realities of Experiencing God” from the book.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

MISPLACED PRIORITIES
What was the problem with the people of Judah? Why were they so dissatisfied with their lives?
What was Judah’s prophecy from God about the people’s problems and priorities? Dr. Fleming says: “It’s not about what we have. It’s about what has us.” So true!
The Real Question: Where are you with Jesus? Where is Jesus on your list of priorities?

Theme #3 from Haggai: Go and Do
Why are our actions just as important as our spoken words?
Why were the people commanded to build a temple?
What did the temple represent?
Did God “need” the temple? If not, why did the people need to build it?
Does obedience make God happy?

Tune in tomorrow for more on this theme and a great reminder from Dr. Fleming that God doesn’t forget His promises to us, but sometimes we have to go outside of our comfort zone to experience that promise.

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

Theme #1 from Haggai: God Speaks
How many times did Haggai write a version of “God spoke” in the two chapters? A LOT!
Was Haggai’s letter his opinion or his own words? How do we know that God spoke to Haggai?
Why is it important to pay attention and take notes when we are listening for and to the Word of God? Dr. Fleming shares a story about one of his first ministry assignments. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Theme #2 from Haggai: Consider Your Ways
What exactly does “consider your ways” mean? Dr. Fleming references James 1:23 and Isaiah 6:4-5 to explain…
How often do you look in the mirror and “judge” yourself? OUCH!
Have you ever considered that your problem is actually YOU? OUCH AGAIN!

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

ZEPHANIAH 1:1

Yesterday, Mark explained the purpose and meaning behind Zephaniah’s family name. How are they connected to God? How did their lives reflect the Kingdom?

Today, he urges us to think about what our own name means. How are we connected to God? How are our lives reflecting the Kingdom?

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3

Why did God, through Zephaniah’s prophecy, claim He would “reverse” the world? In fact, He said He would “utterly sweep away everything”. Why?

Mark shares about a time in the fourth grade when his mother made him clean the bathroom – and then reclean the bathroom. Is this how our own lives are? We clean and clean and clean but there is always more cleaning to do.

How does God “clean” us? (2 Corinthians 3:18)

1When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. 2The more they were called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols. 3Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them.”

Mark shares a great song by the group LAMB (Joel Chernoff), “Ephraim”.

How can this passage show us the faithfulness of Jesus and the unfaithfulness we have? Mark reminds us that God has a purpose for each of us; sow the good seeds!

HOSEA 7:4,6
4They are all adulterers; they are like a heated oven whose baker ceases to stir the fire, from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. 6For with hearts like an oven they approach their intrigue; all night their anger smolders; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.”

When we become Christians, should we be on fire for God until the day we die? Mark uses a wood-burning oven to explain…

HOSEA 10:13-14
13You have plowed iniquity; you have reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way and in the multitude of your warriors, 14Therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle; mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.” Do remember what happened to Jacob when he married the wrong sister? That was a major “oops” moment! Just like the people who didn’t put their trust in God!

HOSEA 9:10
Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved.” If we worship or idolize the wrong things, will we really become like them? Mark says ABSOLUTELY --- Don’t be like the Dufflepuds!

HOSEA 11:1-3
1When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.  2The more they were called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols. 3Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them.”

lest I strip her naked and make her as in the day she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and make her like a parched land, and kill her with thirst.” Mark explains that this verse is actually in the middle of a much larger metaphor within the whole second chapter of Hosea. (Exodus 20:14) Under Israelite law, what were the responsibilities of the husband? What was the wife responsible for?

How is this verse a metaphor for the husband/wife relationship?

How on earth is this verse a metaphor for “God is love”?

Why should we always look to God and His Word for answers – not the world?
How can we know, without a shadow of a doubt, what God’s will is for our lives? Mark encourages everyone to spend time in The Word every single day, saying: “God rewires our brains when we spend time with Him.”

QUESTIONS / ISSUES DISCUSSED:

METAPHORS IN HOSEA: Hosea 2:1
“…the Lord said to Hosea, 'Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom'” WOW! What a way to start a Book of the Bible! What’s UP with this? What in the world was God trying to communicate? Did “wife of whoredom” mean a “prostitute”? Or simply someone who didn’t follow God like she should?

METAPHORS IN HOSEA: Hosea 4:10-12
What’s UP with the “whoredom” again? Mark uses law lingo to explain…
What are “futility curses”? Do we experience the same thing today? Mark compares it to running on a treadmill…
What is a “metanarrative”? Are these found throughout Scripture? What is the biggest metanarrative about God and His people?
Why is the bride of Christ called a “whore” in Hosea? How do YOU feel about that???

How do we know if we are doing what we’re supposed to be doing?
Why should we always treat people with kindness and love? How is our treatment of others a reflection of Jesus?
What is the only substitute for justice? Pastor Fleming explains that mercy is the only substitute.
Does God care about “social justice”?

What If…? Amos 6:1-8
What if we don’t believe?
What if we ignore God?
What if we call evil “good” and good “evil”?
What if we become comfortable with our sin and the sin of others?
What if we forget that we need God?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What Do We Do? Amos 5:4-23
Is God a part of our plan? Or are we a part of God’s plan?
What are you substituting for Jesus? What/who is your idol? Pastor Fleming urges us to examine our lives closely and says: “It becomes a bad thing when it becomes a substitute for the main thing.”
Are you being sincere when you worship God? Will He hear/listen if our hearts aren’t in the right place?
What is the bottom line of Amos’ warning to Israel? Should we heed his warning as well?
How do we know if we are doing what we’re supposed to be doing?
Why should we always treat people with kindness and love?

Scriptures that act as a warning:
Mark 7:6-7
Matthew 7:21-23
Colossians 2:16

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What Do We Do? Amos 5:4-23
If we don’t listen to the voice of God, will we know what to do?
What does it mean to “seek the Lord”? Is He hiding from us? Or are we hiding from Him? Pastor Fleming shares a sweet story about his grandson, Fletcher, playing hide and seek.
Where are we to seek the Lord? Is it about a place – or about the person (God)?

Pastor Fleming reminds us of the importance of actually going to church on a regular basis. He also offers a warning: “Going to church doesn’t mean you are seeking the Lord… The address where you check a box…does not mean you came…seeking the Lord.” Ouch! Think about that for a minute and listen as he explains this statement using John 8:58 “Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.'”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Yesterday, David Fleming discussed the timeframe of Amos chapter 5…

What time is it NOW – TODAY?
Is God still working out a plan in the lives of His people?
Are we witnessing the “worst time ever” in the world today?
Will it get better or worse? (Read Revelation…)
Pastor Fleming reminds us that we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves. He also points out that being a Christian doesn’t mean life will be perfect; we will still have troubling times. What matters is Who we turn to and how we handle those hard times.

What Do We Do? Amos 5:4-23
Why did Amos tell the people to seek the Lord?
What does it mean to “seek the Lord”? Is He hiding from us? Or are we hiding from Him?
If we ignore God’s voice and do our “own thing”, what will happen? Did the Israelites do this? What happened to them?

AMOS 4:6

What does “I gave you cleanness of teeth” mean in this verse? Mark recalls his daughter, Sarah, who loved to sing from an early age and the fun (funny) songs she would make up…

Does God inflict pain without a purpose?

AMOS 4:9-12

Does God withhold judgement and punishment?

Does God sometimes give less punishment than we think is deserved?

Does God sometimes give more punishment than we think is deserved?

Does God ignore our sin?
Does God know about our sin – about the skeletons in our closet?
Will God always forgive and forget our sin when we come to Him in confession? Mark offers encouragement through a touching story…

AMOS 3:13-14

Why is trust and faith so important as we obey God’s plan?
Do we sometimes take for granted that God will see us through difficult times?
What are you leaning on during those difficult times – and even in the good times?
Mark tells a two-sided story – one part happy and one part scary, saying: “I hope that I am a little more cognizant of thanking God and relying on God even for the things that are ordinary in our day-to-day. It’s a question of focus and what we lean on.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

AMOS 2:6

Why is it easier for us to see sin in others, but not ourselves?

Who was St. Francis of Assisi? What did he accomplish? How did he help many, many people around the world?

How can we become a person that changes the world?

AMOS 2:14-16

How can the story of Rocky be found in this passage? Listen as Mark explains this one!

Can we save ourselves? Obviously not! What are some things we can do, though, to serve God in a righteous way? Mark reminds us that God opposes the proud and haughty, but He helps the humble. He gives us the power to overcome anything.

Do you sometimes practice confirmation bias?

Why is it easy for us to see sin in others, but not ourselves?

AMOS 2:6
Where was Amos at this time? Was he continuing his prophecies?
Were the people of Israel a little surprised that Amos was prophesying about them?

Side Note: Remember King David’s sin with Bathsheba and having her husband killed? What was the outcome of this?
What were the Israelites doing to incur the wrath of God?

Mark will continue to share the story of St. Francis of Assisi tomorrow….

AMOS 2:1-2

Listen as he talks about this class, Practical Aspects of Preaching, and what he learned about preaching at funerals and weddings.

Why should we honor all life? “How we speak [about] and treat the dead, is a statement of how we view the living,” Mark says. He also explains that we should be inspired and transformed when we show honor to others, which in turn honors God.

AMOS 2:4
Who were the people of Judah?
What did they do to invoke the wrath of God?
Did they mean to be “bad” people?
What is “confirmation bias”? Mark will continue to explain this tomorrow…

Did the king of the Ninevites repent and command the people to repent as well?
Did the people obey?
Did God forgive the people of Nineveh – these horrible, horrible people?
Does God still forgive “the worst of the worst of the worst”?

Why did Jesus compare his own death and resurrection to Jonah’s three days in the belly of a fish? (Matthew 12:39-41) NOTE: Click here and fast-forward to the 1-hour mark to view the picture of Jonah that Mark mentions.

Why do Jews today read the story of Jonah during Yom Kippur?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

THE HINGE (Joel 2:12-17)

Does God want to just punish us all the time? NO! But too many people (even believers) think God loves to punish His people.

How do people see YOU?

Why is the Christian life centered around love? Are you exhibiting this love to others all the time, no matter what?

AFTER THE HINGE (Joel 2:18-3:21)

Why is repentance important to God? How did Joel point the people to repentance?

Mark once again shares a song from his childhood. No, it’s not the BIBLE or Jesus Loves Me. It’s “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” from the Rolling Stones, explaining that the world will never satisfy us; only God can satisfy us.

During the time of Joel, why did God only anoint a few people? How and why is it different today?

Did Joel’s prophecy come true? Are we still waiting? (Acts 2:16-21)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

BEFORE THE HINGE (Joel 1:1-2:11)
Mark shares a story from Judge Ted Poe who once had a 5-year-old girl set to testify in his court. What was the dilemma? How did Judge Poe determine if this girl was old enough to testify?

What tragic event was happening at the time of Joel?

How were the people suffering? Did they view their circumstances as a “worst case scenario”?

Mark reads some of the lyrics from Bob Dylan’s 1979 song, “When You Gonna Wake Up”. When battling tragedy and awful situations, why is it important to be very specific in our requests to God? Doesn’t He already know what we need? Mark says “yes, but…” Why did Joel write “day of the LORD”? Is this phrase used often in Scripture?

How does God clean up our garbage? Mark uses this time to talk about “garbage” in the world (aka sin).
