Title: Giving God Your Heart
Topic: Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Author Randy Alcorn: “There is a powerful relationship between our true spiritual condition and our attitude and actions concerning money and possessions.”

Pastor Jarrett Stephens concludes the “Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad” sermon series with a hard-hitting message about how we view and what we do with our money, possessions, and resources that God has entrusted us with.

Scripture Passage: Matthew 6:19-24 and Luke 12:13-21

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Where are your priorities? How can we start making the Kingdom of God a priority in our lives? How can we know if God has our heart – our full attention – our whole lives, including our money and possessions? (Matthew 6:21)

Why is it important to give our money and resources to the church and Christian organizations/charities? Is it a “requirement” to be a Christian? Pastor Jarrett says: “What Jesus wants more than anything is your heart. What you do with your money, possessions, and resources simply shows whether or not he has it.”

FINAL THOUGHTS: Ask God what you should do. It’s not about the amount. I’s about the heart!

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

AN ENEMY OF KINGDOM-FOCUSED LIVING: Stinginess
How much “stuff” do you have? Can you afford to get rid of it? What happens when we free ourselves of “stuff”? How is greed deceptive? Tim Keller wrote in his book “Counterfeit Gods”: “Greed hides itself from the victim. The money god’s modus operandi includes blindness to your own heart.” What was the rich fool’s problem in Luke 12? Was it too much wealth? Or was it how he viewed his wealth as his own? Was he living in the “here and now”?

AN ENEMY OF KINGDOM-FOCUSED LIVING: Short-sightedness
Which is more important: How the world sees you OR how God sees you? br /> How was a fool described in the Old Testament?
WWe are not promised another day on earth. Who will enjoy our “stuff” when we are gone? What are you doing now with your money, possessions, and resources to build the Kingdom of God for eternity? (James 4:13-14; 1 Timothy 6:7)
Does God “need” our money? (Psalm 50:10; Psalm 24:1)

Where are your priorities? How can we start making the Kingdom of God a priority in our lives? How can we know if God has our heart – our full attention – our whole lives, including our money and possessions? (Matthew 6:21) br />

Questions/Issues Discussed:

AN ENEMY OF KINGDOM-FOCUSED LIVING: Selfishness
John Wesley, Founder of the Methodist Church: “Money never stays with me. It would burn me if it did. I throw it out of my hands as soon as possible, lest it should find its way into my heart… Not how much of my money will I give to God, but how much of God’s money will I keep for myself.”
How can giving destroy selfishness?
Are credit cards a bad thing? Pastor Jarrett shares about the first credit card offer he got when he was 18 years old and how debt can destroy lives.

AN ENEMY OF KINGDOM-FOCUSED LIVING: Stinginess
What are the two forms of greed in life? Pastor Jarrett discusses the “takers” and the “keepers”.
How was the rich fool in Luke 12 a combination of both a taker and a keeper?
How much “stuff” do you have? Can you afford to get rid of it?

What happens when we free ourselves of “stuff”?

Day 2

Author Randy Alcorn: “There is a powerful relationship between our true spiritual condition and our attitude and actions concerning money and possessions.”

Pastor Jarrett Stephens concludes the “Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad” sermon series with a hard-hitting message about how we view and what we do with our money, possessions, and resources that God has entrusted us with.

Scripture Passage: Matthew 6:19-24 and Luke 12:13-21

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Where is your focus? How do you give? How do you pray? How do you fast? (Matthew 6:1-18)

As Christians, why is it important for us to focus on eternity and not the “here and now”? Pastor Jarrett asks: “Are you using the resources, possessions, and money God has entrusted to you in a ‘here and now'’ kind of way OR are you living like a citizen of a greater Kingdom?” (1 Peter 2:11; Hebrews 13:14; Philippians 3:20)

Pastor Jarrett reads the Parable of the Rich Fool from Luke 12:13-21.

AN ENEMY OF KINGDOM-FOCUSED LIVING: Selfishness
How many times did the rich man use the word “I” or “my”?
Why do we have a tendency to live for the here and now?
Did Jesus criticize the man for being wealthy? (1 Timothy 6:9; Proverbs 23:4) Pastor Jarrett says: “It’s not wrong to have wealth, but we can’t let our wealth have us!”

How many times are money and possessions mentioned in the four gospels? HINT: A lot!

How many times did Jesus talk about money and possessions? HINT: A lot!

Will we be held accountable for what we do with our money and possessions? How does this reflect our true character and our devotion to God and His Kingdom?

Pastor Jarrett reminds us that being wealthy is not evil – BUT we must focus our attention on heaven, not earthly treasures. (Matthew 6:19-21; Ecclesiastes 5:15; Psalm 49:16-17)

Title: How God Sees Sex
Topic: Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Erwin Lutzer wrote in his book,We Will Not Be Silenced”:  “The cellphone in a teenager’s hand is doing more to shape their worldview than one hour of Sunday School or the admonitions of parents. We are failing to pass our faith on to the next generation because they are captives to the culture, social media, their peers, and the indoctrination by the public schools. Parents clothe their children, feed them, and send them to school, but the hearts of their kids are being stolen and molded by a world that many of us don’t understand.”

Sex is a touchy subject. Pastor Jarrett Stephens uses this sermon to passionately and compassionately explain how God sees sex and why Christians must follow His commands on the issue, not the world’s interpretation.

Scripture Passage: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Questions/Issues Discussed:

HOW GOD SEES SEX: Our Biblical Identity
What should our Biblical Identity look like?
Can our Biblical Identity be whatever we “feel like”? (2 Corinthians 5:17; Colossians 3:10-11; Galatians 3:26-29)
Do our lives really change when Jesus lives in our heart? (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Surrender. Remember Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Protect. Put guards up. (Romans 13:14)
Love. Love them to Jesus.

HOW GOD SEES SEX: Our Sexual Activity
Is ALL sexual activity outside of Biblical marriage a sin? (Matthew 19; Luke 9:23; Matthew 16:24) Pastor Jarrett discusses some sensitive topics, like pornography.
Why does Satan use sex to destroy the family and bring corruption to society?
Is adultery always a sin?
Is pre-marital sex always a sin? Is “fooling around” a sexual sin? (1 Corinthians 6:15-20; Hebrews 13:4) Pastor Jarrett says: “Would that be ok if Jesus was sitting in the chair next to you? Because he is!” Think about it!
Is homosexuality always a sin?
How many couples named in the Bible are “same sex” couples? NONE!
How many Scripture passages mention homosexuality? Do any of these passages advocate for homosexuality? Or do they all condemn homosexuality as a sin?
Is there a difference between same-sex attraction and homosexuality?
Are people born “gay”? Is there a “gay gene”? Proven by science – NO!
Can a person have “same-sex” desires and still be a Christian? (Romans 1:18-32)
What is the root of ALL sin?

HOW GOD SEES SEX: Our Physical Body

Why did God give us physical bodies? What were our physical bodies made for? (1 Corinthians 6:13,19-20; 1 Corinthians 14; 1 Corinthians 15; Romans 12:1; Romans 6:12-13; 1 Corinthians 6:15)

What are you doing to your physical body that causes harm? Pastor Jarrett urges us to ask “does this harm my body” before we do anything.

HOW GOD SEES SEX: Our Sexual Activity

What is sexual immorality? (1 Corinthians 6:13,18; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5)

Why are we commanded to “flee” from sexual immorality? Pastor Jarrett explains that all other sin we are to “fight against” but we are to “flee” from sexual immorality. He also reminds us that: “Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”

Why did God design sex?

What is the purpose of marriage?

Is ALL sexual activity outside of Biblical marriage a sin? (Matthew 19; Luke 9:23; Matthew 16:24) Pastor Jarrett discusses some sensitive topics, like pornography.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett continues to review the last five sermons, explaining why, as Christians, we should view every single issue and situation from a Biblical Worldview, not matter how unpopular it makes us. (Genesis 1:3)

Why does God sometimes tell us “no”? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that it’s not to harm us; it’s to help protect us!

Does God love people who are confused over their gender or sexual identification any less? (Genesis 1:27)

HOW GOD SEES SEX: Our Physical Body
Why did Paul write to the church in Corinth about sex? Do his words still ring true today?
Why did God come to earth in the form of a man, Jesus, in a physical body?
Why did God give us physical bodies? What were our physical bodies made for? (1 Corinthians 6:13,19-20; 1 Corinthians 14; 1 Corinthians 15; Romans 12:1; Romans 6:12-13; 1 Corinthains 6:15)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why does Pastor Jarrett feel the topic of sex, especially sexual identification, is such an important topic? His friend and fellow pastor, Gregg Matte from Houston’s First, recently said: “We have gone in our culture concerning these issues from toleration to affirmation to celebration. And if you don’t, you receive condemnation.”

Why should Christians follow a Biblical Worldview in ALL things? Why should Christians always strive to follow God’s Truth, not the world’s “truth”? Pastor Jarrett offers some examples if “absolute truths” – there is no negotiation. He says: “Truth is truth. It’s narrow and it’s absolute.”

Title: Our Place in Politics
Topic: Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the “Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad” series this week with a hard-hitting message about our place in politics. Many Christians do not believe that we should be involved in politics, but Pastor Jarrett is not one of those Christians. In fact, he believes that Christians have a divine responsibility and role as it relates to politics.

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

CHRISTIAN ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Influence and Advocate

NOTE: Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett discussed our role as influencers, stressing the importance of Christians running for office and voting for God-fearing candidates. How can we make a difference in our community through politics? (Jeremiah 29:4-7)

Why should Christians always advocate for those who need help the most? Pastor Jarrett quotes Dionysius, the Bishop of Alexandria.

Can one person really make a difference, though?

Why is it important for Christians to be careful how we submit, obey, pray, preach, influence, and advocate in politics?

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Be respectful, kind, loving, offer grace, and be civil with everyone – no matter what they believe.
Don’t fight the battle like the world. Fight the battle for God.
We don’t live for a kingdom on earth. We live for a future Kingdom to come.

How can Christians influence politics? (Matthew 5, Sermon the Mount; Philippians 3:20)

Is Patriotism good or bad? (Matthew 5:13-16) Pastor Jarrett explains that there is a fine line and Christians need to be careful, saying: “As Christians, we can’t put our love for country OR anything else for that matter above our love and devotion to God! Our Kingdom citizenship is the priority.”

How can we be “salt and light”? Why was salt a valued commodity in the time of Jesus? How does light expose the darkness?

Why do we need more Christians who truly fear God in public office?

CHRISTIAN ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Pray and Preach

Why should we pray for our leaders? (1 Timothy 2:1-3)

What are we commanded to pray for specifically for our leaders?

What if we don’t approve of the leaders God has placed in government? Is it worth complaining about it? (Daniel 2:21; Psalm 75:7) Pastor Jarrett says: “Don’t let who is in power give you heartburn. God is in control… After all, preaching is more important than politics.”

What command did Jesus give us about evangelism and discipleship? (Matthew 28:18-20)

CHRISTIAN ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Influence and Advocate

Why should we fight for our country? Is freedom in our country important? Pastor Jarrett reminisces about 9/11…

How is “politics” specifically defined? Oxford Dictionary: “The activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power.”

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett reminded us that when we trust in Jesus, we are given a new identity; we are “in Christ”. When we trust in Jesus, we are given a new family called the Church. When we trust in Jesus, we are given a new citizenship in heaven. When we trust in Jesus, we are given a new ministry which is referred to as reconciliation. (Ephesians 2:13-16; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20)

How is the Gospel unique from every other message? (Ephesians 2:11-22; Acts 9; Acts 10; 1 Peter 2:9)

What is the “chosen race” – the “third race”?

HOW TO FIGHT RACISM:

Consider Others

Did you know there are over 50 “one another” passages in the Bible? What did Paul write the church about loving others? (Philippians 2:1-5) Pastor Jarrett closes this segment today with a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr’s “Letters from Birmingham Jail”.

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

Title: The Amazing Race
Topic: Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 3

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the “Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad” series this week with a message about unity and love for every person, revealing how the Revelation 5 prophecy is the fulfillment of the Genesis 12 promise.

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What do we learn from Jesus in the New Testament about loving others? (John 4:1-45; Luke 7:1-10; Mark 7:24-30; John 18)

Should Christians Embrace “Critical Race Theory”?

What did Jesus accomplish in his death?

Pastor Jarrett says: “Any competing worldview or organization will always fall short in their ability to bring peace and reconciliation. It doesn’t have the power to do what Jesus does.”
     • Do as Paul said and take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
     • We must make sure we are not led astray by various kinds of strange teachings and controversial speculations. (Hebrews 13:9, 1 Timothy 1:4)
     • We must funnel and filter everything through the gospel first and foremost.

Is Jesus always the answer? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that when we trust in Jesus, we are given a new identity; we are “in Christ”.

Day 2

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the “Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad” series this week with a message about unity and love for every person, revealing how the Revelation 5 prophecy is the fulfillment of the Genesis 12 promise.

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Last week, Pastor Jarrett used Genesis 1:26-27 to remind us that every human being is loved by God, known by God, and created by God. Every human being has value. He goes a step further today and states: “Each person has equal worth and dignity”.

Author and Theologian Art Lindsley wrote: “It is contradictory for Christians to walk into church proclaiming the worthiness of God while cursing someone who God created in his likeness. How believers treat people is an indication of how they value God.”

When did racism originate? Pastor Jarrett refers back to Genesis 6-10 and God’s judgement upon wicked men with a massive flood over all the earth, explaining how different races and languages came about. (Click here and fast-forward to the 47-minute mark to view the map that Pastor Jarrett discusses.)

What can we learn about The End from John’s writings in Revelation? How do we know that this is really going to happen one day? (Revelation 5:9-10)

What is God’s end goal? Can we help fulfill God’s goal with missions and witnessing to the nations? Theologian John Piper wrote in his book, “Let The Nations Be Glad”: “Missions exist because worship does not.”

What should our desire be as Christians?

On the other hand, what is Satan’s end goal? How can we fight against our enemy?

Day 5

NOTE: If you are pregnant and need help or if you have had an abortion and need counseling, please do not hesitate to call CFBC to speak to a counselor or a pastor at 281.440.3800. You can also text “624” to 77069 or click here  for organizations that partner with CFBC.

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues with the “Chasing Sanity in a World Gone Mad” series this week, with hard-hitting message on the sanctity of life from a Biblical Worldview.

Find Pastor Jarrett’s sermon here.

If you have questions about a sermon, please contact Champion Forest at questions@cfbc.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

COMMON QUESTIONS FROM OUR CULTURE ABOUT ABORTION:
As a mother, don’t I have the right to control my body?
Pastor Jarrett explains that a baby is not a “part” of a woman’s body; the baby is a separate person and that person has value. “The right to our body is not absolute,” he says, giving several other examples.

What about in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk?
Pastor Jarrett offers some statistics and facts concerning these situations, being very sensitive and compassionate. He says: “That baby is loved, known, and created by God and therefore has value. We have to fall on the side of choosing life for the baby.”

Pastor Jarrett also passionately reminds us that God takes all of our shame and guilt. If you have had an abortion or encouraged someone to get an abortion, there is forgiveness.

What about those who are poor, can’t afford a child, or will bring that child up in poverty and/or in harm’s way?
Pastor Jarrett believes the same applies: Every baby is loved, known, and created by God. No matter their social status, every person matters from the moment of conception.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Taking away life isn’t the answer. Choosing life is.

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back/strong>.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is a baby – a child – a human? Pastor Jarrett offers several Scriptures to describe a baby outside of the womb: Jeremiah 3:15; 1 Peter 2:2; Luke 2:12; Luke 2:16; Luke 18:15. He then reads about John the Baptist leaping inside Elizabeth’s womb when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was near, found in Luke 1:41 and Luke 1:44. The same word is used to describe a baby both inside and outside the womb.

What about scientific proof? Pastor Jarrett reveals some amazing scientific facts about babies in the womb.

Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett shared a great quote from Peter Kreeft, a Professor at Boston College. Click here and fast-forward to the 42-minute mark for the full quote. It really explains a lot and would be great to have on hand when discussing this topic with non-believers.

Is every human being born with a sin nature? (Romans 5) Pastor Jarrett shares a short video of two little boys fighting. Click here and fast-forward to the 47-minute mark.
So, why do we sin? Why can’t we stop sinning? Why is the world riddled with hurricanes and floods and other natural disasters? Why do people get cancer and other diseases? (Romans 8:18-23)

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Many people wonder: If God is good, then why does He allow pain, suffering, and evil? If God is all-powerful, surely, He can stop it all!

How can Christians be a beacon of hope during tragic times?

Why do we often fixate on what we don’t know? If we knew the reason “why”, would it really help us? Pastor Jarrett says: “Our goal is not to understand or solve the problem of evil, pain, and suffering. Our goal is to look at this problem through the lens of Scripture.” (Deuteronomy 29:29; Isaiah 55:8-9; 1 Corinthians 13:12)

The fact of suffering undoubtedly constitutes the single greatest challenge to the Christian faith and has been in every generation. Its distribution and degree appear to be entirely random and, therefore, unfair. Sensitive spirits ask if it can possibly be reconciled with God’s justice and love.” Theologian John Stott

Yesterday, he humbly asked for prayer (for staff and church unity) and grace (because you probably won’t agree with everything!). Today, he encourages us to have hope for the future and to remember the goal is eternity in Heaven for every human being.

Why is it important to bring glory to God in everything we do? Pastor Jarrett urges caution and love, especially on social media.

Does the information we ingest really affect our opinions? Colossians 3:2-3; Romans 12:2; Philippians 4:8

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett takes the first few minutes of his sermon to explain why he has chosen specific topics to preach on in this new series, such as sexuality and homosexuality. Today, he humbly asks Christians to pray for the church staff and to give them some grace (because you probably won’t agree with everything!). Tune in tomorrow as he encourages us to have hope for the future and to remember the goal is eternity in Heaven for every human being.
