Title: The Need for Church
Topic: FaceTime: Cultivating Genuine Connection
Discussed by Pastor Jarrett Stephens
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

This week, Pastor Jarrett Stephens concludes the series: “FaceTime: Cultivating Genuine Connection”. The focus of this final sermon is on the Need for Church.

NOTE: Sometimes, the church is referred to as “Church” and sometimes it is referred to as the “church”. There is a difference! Pastor Jarrett will explain and dissect that this week.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Check out his sermon notes here.

Scripture Passage: Ephesians 4:1-6

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Remember: Jesus makes the church! If he is not the center of attention, it is not a church! In fact, Pastor Jarrett says: “The Senior Pastor at Champion Forest is Jesus and always will be!”

INVISIBLE CHURCH
(with a big “C”)
Yesterday, Pastor Jarrett preached about the importance of belonging to a “little c” church. Today, he passionately urges everyone to examine their own life. You may be a member of a “church” but if you aren’t a member of His Church, then it doesn’t matter! (Nicodemus 3)

Rick Warren wrote in “The Purpose Driven Life” 5 Purposes of the Church from Acts 2:42-46
Grow warmer through fellowship
Grow deeper through discipleship
Grow stronger through worship
Grow broader through ministry
Grow larger through evangelism

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

Scripture Passage: Ephesians 4:1-6

Questions/Issues Discussed:

VISIBLE CHURCH (with a little “c”)

Is every member of the church valued and important?
Is it possible to be a member of the Invisible Church and not a visible church? Yes, BUT Pastor Jarrett doesn’t recommend it. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Does the Holy Spirit still speak to Christians today? (John 16:7-8; Ephesians 1:13-14)
What is our hope? How can we keep that hope forever? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that the disciples endured the unimaginable, but they still had hope – they had faith.

NOTE: If you are not connected to a visible church, get connected NOW! Don’t wait.

BOTTOM LINE: What is the church?

Pastor Jarrett rapid-fires through these Scriptures:
Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 4:15-5:23; Ephesians 2:20; Ephesians 5:23-27; Ephesians 4:11-16; Ephesians 5:25; Ephesians 2:21-22; Ephesians 4:15; Ephesians 3

Scripture Passage: Ephesians 4:1-6

Questions/Issues Discussed:

VISIBLE CHURCH (with a little “c”)

Do we have to be “perfect” and have our life together before we come to Jesus? HINT: No – because we can NEVER be perfect!

What does “unity” mean? Why is unity important to Jesus? (John 17:11)

What should our unity in the church reflect? Every church is different, just like people. How do we know which church is “right”? Why does the world view people and the church as hypocritical? Pastor Jarrett says this is a tough one as he discusses our witness to the world…

How is the church like the Body of Christ? (1 Corinthians 12:12-20,27)

Is every member of the church valued and important? Is it possible to be a member of the Invisible Church and not a visible church? Yes, BUT Pastor Jarrett doesn’t recommend it…

Scripture Passage: Ephesians 4:1-6

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Wayne Grudem wrote in his book, “Christian Beliefs”: “…the community of all true believers for all time. That is, the Church is made up of all men and women who have been, are, or ever will be true believers in Jesus.

So, what is the Church? Pastor Jarrett discusses the visible church and the invisible Church.

VISIBLE CHURCH (with a little “c”)
Is it really important for Christians to go to church regularly?
Cyprian once stated: “No one can have God for his Father who does not have the Church for his mother.”
What three types of homes do we need?
Pastor Jarrett discusses why he believes the book of Ephesians is a great example of what a church should be like. Is every church different, just like people? How do we know which church is “right”?

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, text the word JESUS to 77069 and a pastor or counselor from CFBC will call you back.

How are churches different than a business, organization, or anything else?

How does the Bible describe the Church? What did Jesus say about the Church? (Matthew 16:13-18)

Why do we stand up when someone important walks into the room?
What does “standing” communicate?
Will standing in our own strength ever work out well? HINT: No.
How can we know that we are growing in our faith? Pastor Jarrett shares several signs that we are growing spiritually.

ACT LIKE MEN
Pastor Jarrett sums it up like this: “Grow up.”

Scripture Passage: 1 Corinthians 16:13

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How can we (men and women alike) continue to stand firm in our faith?

How can we be sure that we are following in obedience to God’s plan?

Why do the writers of the Bible compare the Christian life to war? (2 Corinthians 10:3-4; 2i Timothy 2:3-4; Philippians 2:25; Philemon 1:2)

Are Christians really battling a spiritual war every day? (Ephesians 6:11-12) Pastor Jarrett quotes E.M. Bounds and adds this: “We have to prepare ourselves mentally for what we are dealing with in the spiritual realm so we can have victory in the physical realm.”

Do you see yourself as a soldier? This is mainly targeted toward men, as the leader of the family, but it applies to every Christian, as well. (1 Peter 2:4)

Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose-Driven Life”, wrote: “Spiritual growth is not automatic. It takes an intentional commitment. You must want to grow, decide to grow, make an effort to grow, and persist in growing. Discipleship – the process of becoming like Christ – always begins with a decision.”

GROWING IN CHRIST: Give Yourself to God’s Word.
What is a “surrendered spirit”? How is a surrendered spirit the critical link between growth as a believer and obedience?
How many meals do you eat each day to keep your physical body healthy? Do you snack every day, too? Why not do the same for your spiritual body???
When is the best time to start studying the Bible? HINT: NOW!

GROWING IN CHRIST: Give Yourself to God’s Church.
Pastor Jarrett shares about the camp he and his family go to every year…
Why is it imperative for ALL Christians to be part of a Bible-believing church? Pastor Jarrett shares some great reasons…

Scripture References: Hebrews 10:24-25

Pastor Jarrett Stephens continues the series “FaceTime: Cultivating Genuine Connection” with a sermon on Biblical parenting and raising the next generation.

NOTE: Just like last week, when he preached on marriage, Pastor Jarrett urges everyone to listen to the sermon segments this week. It doesn’t matter if you have kids, don’t have kids, your kids are grown, or whether you are single or married. Everyone can benefit from the message this week.

Find Pastor Jarrett Stephens’ sermon here.

Scripture Passage: Psalm 127

Questions/Issues Discussed:

WHO IS RAISING YOUR CHILDREN? (vs 3-5)
Does prayer really make a difference?
Does our example really make a difference?
It’s a hard thing to do, but letting go is part of the process. Pastor Jarrett urges parents to raise their children to change the world for Christ. He tells a story about missionary Jim Elliot, who wrote: “Remember how the Psalmist described children? He said that they were a heritage from the Lord, and that every man should be happy who had his quiver full of them. And what is a quiver full of arrows? And what are arrows for but to shoot?” (Listen to the segment for the full quote)

APPLICATION:
Who is building your home?
Who is raising your children?
Do it all for the glory of God.

Scripture Passage: Psalm 127

Questions/Issues Discussed:

WHO IS RAISING YOUR CHILDREN? (vs 3-5)

What is the best parenting advice Pastor Jarrett ever received?

How do children spell love? TIME! Pastor Jarrett shares how Jewish families would recite Psalm 127 over their children as a prayer for their future.

Why is it important to teach our children about the Lord every single day? Pastor Jarrett offers some great suggestions on how parents can do this and says: “If we don’t disciple our children, their friends and Google will.”

Should parents really set boundaries for their kids? Josh McDowell once said: “Rules without relationship leads to relational disconnect, which prompts rebellion.”

Does prayer really make a difference?

Does our example really make a difference?

Scripture Passage: Psalm 127

Questions/Issues Discussed:

WHO IS BUILDING YOUR HOME?
(vs 1-2)
Are you too busy building your home around your career?
Are you too busy building your home around your kids extracurricular activities?
Why do we need God’s protection over our family? Pastor Jarrett reminds us that Satan went after families first – and he still does today.
Will God only protect us if invited? Pastor Jarrett offers an interesting perspective on this…

Scripture References:
Psalm 121:3-4

WHO IS RAISING YOUR CHILDREN?
(vs 3-5)
What does “heritage” mean in this passage?
Do your kids truly know that they are gifts to you – a blessing?
Charles Spurgeon once said: “He gives children, not as a penalty nor as a burden, but as a favour…Where society is rightly ordered children are regarded, not as an encumbrance, but as an inheritance. And they are received, not with regret, but as a reward.”
Why did Solomon compare children to arrows? NOTE: Pastor Jarrett will be preaching on the “arrows” for the rest of the segments this week…

Who was Solomon, the author of Psalm 127?
What will your family legacy be?
What does the word “vain” mean? Why is this significant in this Psalm?
Why is our family foundation important? Does it really have to be “solid”? Pastor Jarrett shares a lesson he learned from his father, who is a brick-mason and carpenter.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What are some great theories on parenting? Is there a “perfect” theory? How does the Bible approach and teach on parenting?

Why should we stop focusing on our past mistakes, especially when it comes to parenting?

Pastor Jarrett briefly discusses this quote from Pastor Larry Osborne from his book, “Ten Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe”. Chapter Three is entitled “A Godly Home Guarantees Godly Kids”. He wrote: “Every son and daughter of Adam is a born with a sin nature. Sometimes it gets the upper hand. When it does, it’s not someone else’s fault – not even Mom or Dad’s.”

What are the Psalms of Ascent (Psalm 120-134) and why were they written? This is really interesting! Pastor Jarrett will continue his discussion on this tomorrow.

Day 5

Pastor Jarrett Stephens begins a new 8-week sermon series entitled “FaceTime: Cultivating Genuine Connection.” The focus this week is all about mothers (the sermon is from Mother’s Day).

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 1-2

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Jarrett passionately discusses the possibility that Roe v Wade will be overturned in America (with the decision about abortion left to individual states). He says: “We have an obligation as Christians to always fight for life. This is not a time to gloat, but to step up like never before.”

He also mentions that CareNet (a local Houston pro-life pregnancy center) is looking for a RN. Email LauraMartinez@carenetnw.com or call 281.444.8036 for more information.

Pastor Jarrett also reminds us that we ALL have sin in our lives. If you have had an abortion, or you are the male partner of a woman who has had an abortion, contact the H3 Helpline here or call 1.866.721.7881. The phone call is completely confidential. There IS healing in Jesus’ name!

Back to the Sermon:
After she finally became pregnant, how did Hannah keep her word to the Lord? Did Hannah have more kids? Did her son, Samuel, become a prophet of the Lord?

APPLICATION: If you want a genuine connection to your kids, connect with God first. Then, make sure your kids know and love Him, too. Just like a puzzle, all the pieces will come together.

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 1-2

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why does Pastor Jarrett love the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”? He reads the words from this hymn…

How did God change Hannah’s outlook on life? Had her circumstances changed? Heath Thomas once said: “The order of events is not empty! Hannah found joy and deep faith as she found her deepest needs met in God. Faith-filled Hannah found a source of joy and security greater than her hope of sons: God himself!”

Pastor Jarrett uses the rest of this segment today to talk about the “moms” in his life. He also passionately discusses the possibility that Roe v Wade will be overturned in America (with the decision about abortion laws left to individual states). He says: “We have an obligation as Christians to always fight for life. This is not a time to gloat, but to step up like never before.”

Who was Hannah? What do we know about her from Scripture? What did her husband do when he found out she couldn’t have children? Did she feel as if God had abandoned her? How long did Hannah feel this way? What did her husband say to her as she grieved? (Guys – take note here! This is what NOT to say to your wife when she is sad!)

Why does God open some women’s wombs and close some? Pastor Jarrett doesn’t have a good answer for this. The question grieves him. He reminds us that God does see our pain and He does hear our prayers.

How was Hannah able to have faith and worship God through her sadness?

What was happening in the Church during this time? Were the leaders (men) behaving in a godly manner? Would it have been easy for Hannah (or anyone) to just turn their back on God and give up?
