Topic: Grandparent: Be Intentionally Spiritual
Discussed by Deborah Haddix
with Deborah Haddix (www.deborahhaddix.com/)
Part 1 of 3
Grandbabies are great! Until they become teenagers – then the relationship seems to change overnight.
Deborah Haddix is a writer, speaker, and Christian life coach. She also serves as Resources Director for the
Christian Grandparenting Network. Today she shares “Six Practical ideas for Grandparenting Teens”.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Do children change when they become teenagers? Deborah says this has a “yes” and “no” answer…
Does God intend grandparents to be involved in their teenage grandchildren’s lives?
Does the Bible address the role of grandparenting? Deborah gives several examples and says: “There are no passes on our Biblical role.”
How can Deborah help grandparents be more intentional in their grandchildren’s lives?

Title: Part 2 of 3 - Grandparenting Teens
Topic: Grandparent: Be Intentionally Spiritual
Discussed by Deborah Haddix
with Deborah Haddix (www.deborahhaddix.com/)
Questions/Issues Discussed:
How can grandparents mentally and spiritually prepare to bond with their teenage
grandchildren?
Is quality alone time important? They may act like they don’t want to spend time
with you, but they really do! Take the time to do it.
What if we don’t have anything in common? How can we bond? Deborah says: “Consider
their likes and preferences because they are much more likely to spend time with
you if its around something they like and enjoy.”
Why is just being there to listen important – no talking back, no judging, no
giving advice?
Can grandparents have house-rules without placing too many expectations?

Title: Becoming Spiritually Deliberate
Topic: Grandparent: Be Intentionally Spiritual
Discussed by Pastor Ed Ethridge
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)
Day 1
God designed grandparents to come along side parents in the spiritual training of children. However, the concept that grandparents play a strategic role in the character and faith development of a grandchild is rare.
Pastor Ed Ethridge wants grandparents and parents alike to imagine what could happen if they came together, becoming more spiritually deliberate with the younger generation.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Has Pastor Ethridge personally witnessed parents and grandparents be positive and deliberate spiritual role models?
Can focusing on one simple scripture passage each week be a starting point? Terry uses Proverbs 13:4 as an example. How can grandparents use this verse as a teachable moment?

Title: Kids Missing Heaven. Who’s Fault?
Topic: Grandparent: Be Intentionally Spiritual
Discussed by Pastor Ed Ethridge
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)
Part 1 of 2
The sad truth: Recent research from Barna’s demonstrates that the world in which this next generation is coming of age is one that stands apart from that of their parents and grandparents. The post-truth world they inhabit no longer shares the same moral principles or societal values, leading to a more relativistic worldview among teens and a growing religious apathy.
The problem: Christianity today has less influence on Gen Z than on any previous generation.
Pastor Ed Ethridge will be discussing the important influence both parents AND grandparents have on the next generation. Pastor Ethridge is the Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care at
Champion Forest Baptist Church.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Do our children and grandchildren face spiritual battles that we never faced? Pastor Ed believes the increase of peer pressure is one example…
Are Christian parents eager for their children and grandchildren to develop a lasting faith in Jesus as the Son of God?
OR are Christian parents more concerned with their kids getting good grades and excelling in extracurricular activities?
Who is responsible for the spiritual formation, nurturing, development, cultivation, promotion, and development of children? Teachers? The church? Friends? Television and movies? Or are YOU – the parent or grandparent – responsible?
What role does the Church have in partnering with parents and grandparents?
Are public schools spiritually dangerous places for Christian students? This is a loaded question with a loaded answer! Listen in!

Title: Part 2 of 2 - Kids Missing Heaven. Who’s Fault?
Topic: Grandparent: Be Intentionally Spiritual
Discussed by Pastor Ed Ethridge
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)
Questions/Issues Discussed:
How can the Church better equip parents and grandparents to fulfill their
God-ordained role as the spiritual shepherds of their children and
grandchildren? Pastor Ed references 2 Timothy and Proverbs…
While devotions are helpful, is the Bible the best “self help book”?
How can parents and grandparents begin to teach their children to love and
follow Jesus Christ all the way to heaven?
Bottom line: What is more important: Success in the world or a real relationship
with Jesus?
