Title: Service
Topic: Getting Through What You’re Going Through
Discussed by Pastor David Fleming
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Has something knocked you down? You couldn’t avoid it and it’s hard to “just get over it”.  God will use you through your tough circumstance. He will use you after it, too!

Champion Forest Baptist Church Senior Pastor David Fleming concludes the sermon series, “Getting Through What You’re Going Through”, this week with his final sermon: “Service”.

Pastor Fleming has several ways our grief can help us to serve others, both during and after a tragic circumstance.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

People want to hear your testimony. They want to hear about your struggle and how you overcame your darkest hour with God’s help. He has given you an amazing opportunity to share the Gospel. Tell them. Don’t be shy.

Paul used his experiences to share the Gospel with others. He was like everyone else, struggling daily with various afflictions. It was God’s help that saw Paul through those times. It was God’s help that inspired him to help others through the same situation.

Don’t waste your pain,” Pastor Fleming implores. “Don’t waste your suffering. Don’t let them be for nothing. Let God use you to ease someone else’s suffering.

Homework assignment: Think about someone you know who is going through a difficult time. Can you help them? Yes? Then help them! Don’t wait any longer. This is YOUR opportunity to serve them.

YOU are qualified to help others. Your experience gives you the tools to help others. Don’t even think you are not good enough. You are.

How can your pain be a platform to share the Gospel?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Does suffering help to humble/soften us so we can better serve others? Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Can our pain give us more empathy/sympathy to the suffering of others?

What is the difference between empathy and sympathy?

Is it okay to just be human and feel the pain? HINT: Yes, of course!

Can our challenges give us credibility?

Pastor Fleming has several ways our grief can help us to serve others, both during and after a tragic circumstance.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How can you help others go through what you’ve gone through? In the final stage of grief, “Service”, God will use our circumstance to help others. You have the experience. You know what the shock and struggle feels like. Now it’s time to give back.

You’re not helping in spite of what’s happened to,” Pastor Fleming states. “You’re helping others because of what’s happened to you.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-7 Paul had been through a lot, but was comforted in the midst of it. He did, however, recognize a greater purpose and became better qualified to serve others because of his sufferings.

Title: Surrender
Topic: Getting Through What You’re Going Through
Discussed by Pastor David Fleming
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

For the past several weeks, Champion Forest Baptist Church Pastors David Fleming and Averri LeMalle have been encouraging us with a sermon series: “Getting Through What You’re Going Through”.

Everyone has struggled with grief in their life – and that grief looks different to everyone. However, there are five stages of grief that we all experience. The first three are: shock, struggle, and sorrow.

This week, Pastor Fleming will be discussing the fourth, and quite possibly, the most important stage of grief: Surrender. We all must, at some point, surrender our grief to the Lord. Surrendering means we are willing to accept what we cannot change and only God can provide the comfort we so desperately need.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Have you memorized Romans 8:28 yet “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”? Pastor Fleming challenged us to memorize this verse this week. Memorize it. Believe it. Trust it. Know that it is true.

Enjoy listening to an amazing video testimony from a sweet couple, Jim and Rebecca Patterson, from Champion Forest Baptist Church. Grab some Kleenex!

Closing thoughts: We are taught to never quit, but in order to move on and get over it, we must surrender everything.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is it wrong to continue to live your life the way you did before tragedy struck?

Is survivor’s guilt a real thing?

Pastor Fleming mentions a great book that everyone should own: “Grace Disguised”, by Jerry Sittser. You can order a copy here.

No matter what happened, you have a right to live again. You have a responsibility to live again,” Pastor Fleming says.

How do you accept what is hard to accept? The final suggestion Pastor Fleming has for us in order to fully surrender to God is: Look for His hand. Lay your “yes” at His table.

Even in our worst times – even in our grief – God is working in us and through us to improve us – to make us more like Jesus.

Surrendering means we are willing to accept what we cannot change and only God can provide the comfort we so desperately need.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Don’t let others make you feel guilty about the manner in which you grieve. Sometimes holding on to the pain and grief is beneficial – for a time, but not for forever. Pastor Fleming says: “Unforgiveness is a poison we prepare for someone else but we drink ourselves.” We are not punishing them; we are punishing ourselves.

Make a fist. Do it. Hold your hand tight in a fist. Don’t let go! Hold it tight until you hand throbs. Now, slowly let your fingers open and feel the relief as your blood begins to flow again. This is how it feels to forgive.

How do you accept what is hard to accept? After you lean up on the Lord and you have let go of the pain, you need to learn to live again.

Why were King David’s servants confused with his worshipful spirit after his son’s death?

Is it wrong to continue to live your life the way you did before tragedy struck?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Did David’s sin cause his son’s death?

Would it have been easier for David to keep sinning instead of surrendering to the Lord?

Does the “why” really matter?

Why is it so easy to trust people we have never met, yet so hard to trust God? Listen as Pastor Fleming offers several examples…

How do you accept what is hard to accept? The second suggestion Pastor Fleming offers is: Let go of the pain – and the perpetrator of that pain. This is also called “forgiveness”.

David wrote Psalm 51 after his sin with Bathsheba. His confession did not prevent his son’s death. Why?

This week’s mission: Memorize Romans 8:28 “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

In 2 Samuel 12, King David’s son became ill. King David mourned and fasted. When his child died, however, King David worshipped the Lord! How could he do this? Pastor Fleming believes it is because King David was able to surrender his grief to the Lord.

How do you accept what is hard to accept? Pastor Fleming has four suggestions, and the first is: Lean on the Lord.

Could God have prevented King David’s son’s death? Tune in tomorrow as Pastor Fleming offers more insight on “leaning on the Lord”.

Title: Sorrow
Topic: Getting Through What You’re Going Through
Discussed by Pastor David Fleming
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

Champion Forest Baptist Church is in the midst of a short new series: “Getting Through What You’re Going Through”.

Each sermon will focus on a different stage of grief. Pastor LeMalle encouraged us last week through the second phase, “Struggle”. This week, Pastor David Fleming will discuss why allowing ourselves to have sorrow is vital to the recovery process.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The third way to overcome your sorrow: Work through your grief. You may never “get over” your pain; it may never fully go away. “Closure is a myth,” Pastor Fleming states. “Instead integrate that experience into your future.” As soon as possible, return to normal, everyday activities. Learn to laugh again, have fun, and enjoy life.

The final suggestion Pastor Fleming has for those who are in the midst of sorrow is: Hold on to hope. Hope is the one thing that separates the believer from the unbeliever. Paul told the church in 1 Thessalonians 4 that it was okay to grieve, but to never lose hope that God will perform a miracle.

Pastor Fleming has a “Grief Inventory” homework assignment for you! Don’t worry – it’s easy!

1. Make a list of the sad and bad things that have caused your grief.
2. Identify what you lost, what the cost was, and when it happened.
3. Write down how you felt at that moment and how you feel now
4. Evaluate your progress over time as you’ve worked through it
5. Take the list to God and allow Him to heal your heart, soul, and mind

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

What if YOU are the person who is experiencing sorrow after a tragic event? Pastor Fleming has four suggestions: Embrace your grief. Don’t stuff it down. Pastor Fleming shares how it took him six months to fully express the sorrow he experienced after his father died.

Pastor Fleming also suggests that you do not shy away from sharing your grief with others. Being alone is okay, but don’t stay alone for long. Withdrawing and isolating ourselves is not ever good for us, especially when we are grieving.

Day 3

Champion Forest Baptist Church is in the midst of a short new series: “Getting Through What You’re Going Through”.

Each sermon will focus on a different stage of grief. Pastor LeMalle encouraged us last week through the second phase, “Struggle”. This week, Pastor David Fleming will discuss why allowing ourselves to have sorrow is vital to the recovery process.

The Scripture passage this week is Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Fleming has three suggestions for helping others who are in the third stage of grief. The first is: “Stop trying to cheer everyone up!” (This is actually a quote from Pastor Rick Warren.) Paul even tells us in Romans 12 to “weep with those who weep”. Cry with them. Get angry with them. But don’t ever argue with them; instead agree with them over their sorrow. There will eventually be a time to cheer them up, but wait a while first.

The second way to help others in their sorrow is: Don’t underestimate the power of prayer. Let your friend know you are praying for them – and tell them how and what you are praying for! Write a note, with your prayer spelled out so they can read it. Stop them in the hallway at church and say a quick prayer right there.

The third way to help others through their time of sorrow is: Walk with them. Galatians 6:2 tells us to “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Be patient and allow your friend to experience sorrow. “But, be careful,” Pastor Fleming warns. “Encourage their progress but don’t force arrival.” Don’t ignore the issue; remember the tragic event (when the time is right).

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Sorrow is evidence that we have lived and loved deeply,” Pastor Fleming states.

Are you afraid to lose control? Or are you just afraid of the result if you aren’t in control? Cultural expectations often have an effect on our grieving process, specifically when it comes to expressing sorrow.

Have you ever suppressed your sorrow? “Ignorance won’t make it go away,” Pastor Fleming warns.

Even Jesus grieved! Grieving is good for the soul! The Bible is full of examples of people just like us who grieved and who got through their grief.

Do you know someone who is grieving? Pastor Fleming quotes fellow Pastor Rick Warren: “Stop trying to cheer everyone up!” Why would he say that?

In life, there are peaks and there are valleys. Joys and sorrows. As Christians, our approach to the hard times should be different than non-believers.

Sometimes, you must “bottom out” in order to recover our joy. Grief is the bottom, but that’s where we can get our footing and begin to rebuild.

What is sorrow? Pastor Fleming explains that sorrow looks different to everyone. But, sorrow is also more than just emotional; it also affects our physical condition and relationships.

Is it okay to complain to God? Yes, absolutely! Be honest with Him. Get mad. Yell and cry out. God would rather you turn to Him rather than away.

“If you’re going to complain, at least complain to Someone who can something about it,” Pastor Averri LeMalle says.

Who are you consulting in times of crisis? Friends? Family? Your Pastor? Those are all great, but when do you consult God? He should be the first person you turn to for clarity and comfort, not only in prayer, but reading the Scriptures, too.

Pastor Averri uses Psalm 13 to encourage us in this first segment. David, the author of this Psalm, was in the midst of great sorrow. David was asking God where He was; why did it seem as though God had turned away from him? The end of the Psalm gives us hope, though!

Day 5

Champion Forest Baptist Church is beginning a short new series: “Getting Through What You’re Going Through”.

Many people in Texas are still suffering the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Some have family members or friends who were affected from hurricane flood waters in Florida or Puerto Rico. Of course, there was also the tragedy in Las Vegas that the whole nation is reeling from.

How does one “handle” these type of situations? Pastor David Fleming and others will be going through the five stages of grief over the next few weeks. The first stage of grief is “SHOCK”.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Pastor Fleming begins the conclusion of his sermon today on the first stage of grief with a great story about a Sequoia tree’s firm foundation. They may be weak and vulnerable above ground, but their roots grow far and wide and strong below the surface. The same can be said for solid friendships within the body of Christ. He also shares another story of people helping people. Grab some tissues!

Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Tune in next week as Pastor Averri LeMalle shares the second installment in the “Getting Through What You’re Going Through” sermon series, focusing on the second stage of grief “STRUGGLE”.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Listen as Pastor Fleming shares a personal story of people who helped him and his wife in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Galatians 6:10 “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Maybe you are not in a tragic situation or haven’t experienced one in while. Soon enough, you will probably be tested! Pastor Fleming has advice for this situation, too: be prepared, lay a firm foundation in the Word, and strengthen your connections to others now.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

When bad things happen to us, there are three steps Pastor Fleming recommends we follow: turn to the Lord, let others help, and delay big decisions. Pastor Fleming becomes very passionate over the last one. Listen as he explains why…

What if you know someone who is grieving? What can you do? Pastor Fleming once again has three action steps: show up, don’t minimize the situation, and take initiative.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why is shock and denial our first response to tragedy?

Is it possible to just “get over” something horrible that happens to you?

After the initial shock, what should our next response be? Turn to the Lord and pray. Listen as Pastor Fleming discusses this further, as well as the next two steps. He continues this conversation in tomorrow’s segment.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why do bad things happen to good people? This is a question that has been asked since the beginning of time. Pastor Fleming reminds us of Psalm 23, “The Lord’s Prayer”.

Every person in the world are in one of three stages of a crisis: in the midst of, coming out of, or heading into one.

The Five Stages of Grief: Shock, Struggle, Sorrow, Surrender/Sanctification, and Service. This week’s focus is “shock”.
