Part 1 of 3

Syria (or Assyria) was the first major Empire in the world; it was even mentioned in Genesis 2:14. The Assyrians were nice, loving, caring people who had a heart for God.

Then there was Neo-Assyria several hundred years later. These were not a peaceful people, slaughtering every person in their path. It was during this time when Jonah enters the picture and warns the people of Assyria to repent, or else. Well, they repented! Hallelujah!

The Assyrians and the Babylonians are significant to the history of Syria, especially after their repentance. They produced the fundamental basics of mathematics, the Pythagorean Theorem, the concept of zero, 360 degrees in a circle, parabolic domes and arches, and longitude and latitude in geography. Wow! All without Google, smart phones, or free Wi-Fi!

Interesting fact: Aramaic was the spoken language in Syria and most of the nations; it is even the language Jesus spoke. This language existed until 2013, when the last known Aramaic tribe was destroyed by ISIS terrorists.

Syria was the very first nation to be completely Christian – every single person was a Christian, no exceptions. This was during the time of Paul, who we know loved to preach the Word! Under the guidance of Paul, the Syrians, who consequently created the word “Christian”, spread the Gospel throughout India, Mongolia, and even China!

We also attribute universities and even hospitals to the Christian Syrians. For centuries, countries modeled their universities and hospitals after the Christian Syrians. Listen in as Historian Bill Federer discusses these interesting facts about Syria.

In 634 AD, the Muslim Arabs entered Syria, killing Christians and claiming the land as their own. Then in 1268 AD, the Muslim Turks invaded Syria, selling the women into slavery, beheading the men, burning churches…basically what we see happening now in Syria.

Bill Federer also discusses the crusades, which were in response to a plea for help from the Christian Syrians. Some crusades were successful; others were not. Unfortunately, the last traces of any Christian in Syria was in 1291 AD.

It’s really sad when you think about the history of Syria, how it went from being the first Christian nation in the world at 25 BC to being completely obliterated in 1291 AD. Many lives in the Eastern Hemisphere were touched by the Christian Syrians. Many lives were changed. Many souls were saved for eternity.

But the killing wasn’t over! Over 17 million Christians were killed from Persia to Central Asia by a crazed Turkish Muslim leader by the name of Tamerlane beginning in 1399. Tamerlane rounded up the Christians and murdered them, even using their skulls to erect huge towers.

Thankfully, a peaceful leader was able to overthrow the murderers, putting the military in charge of keeping the peace. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a whole lot better. There was peace for hundreds of years, until the last election in Syria, when the new leaders invited the bad guys back to play. And now our leaders in America are supplying the new terrorist groups with money and guns.
