Part 1 of 3
Seventy years ago, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Today, Japan and America are close allies. But did it take dropping two atomic
bombs to achieve this alliance? Were they necessary?
James Kunetka is the author of “The General and the Genius: Groves and
Oppenheimer, the Unlikely Partnership That Built the Atom Bomb.” His previous
books are books are about Los Alamos and the Manhattan Project. In his latest
book, he reveals information about the two men who were directly responsible for
orchestrating and executing the greatest scientific feat of the
twentieth-century: General Leslie Groves and physicist Robert Oppenheimer. These
men were responsible for creating the atomic bomb.
FACT: From 1942-1945 2 Billion dollars were spent creating the
atomic bomb. That was a lot of money back then! It would be a lot of money now!
“Today isn’t a day that we celebrate,” James says solemnly, “but it is a day
that we acknowledge.” We look upon this day differently than those who lived in
1945 did. Listen in as James gives some background on himself, as well as Groves
and Oppenheimer, the purpose of the atomic bomb, and why it was ultimately
decided to use it.
Listen to the next segment as author James Kunetka reveals some secrets! You
don’t want to miss it!

Some secrets need to be shared!
While he can’t share any of the “technical” details, James does reveal
interesting information about the relationship between Groves and Oppenheimer.
He also discusses the early radiation tests, why those in charge were afraid to
test the bomb publicly, and what actually happened in Hiroshima.
James also discusses some of the historical context behind the decision to
ultimately use the atomic bomb. It was more than just “let’s see if this thing
works”. It was a difficult decision for all involved.

James Kunetka is not only a
best-selling author, he is also the retired Associate Vice President of the
University of Texas. He concludes this interview by discussing more about the
events leading up to dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Japan’s
ultimate surrender.
James also reveals how the creators of the atomic felt after it was dropped. Was
there remorse? Do they wish it hadn’t happened? Were they glad? Could things
have been different? After all, our prisoners were not treated like kings and
queens by the Japanese.
As for the future, James says, “How to make an atomic bomb is fairly well
understood. Making an H-bomb is harder. The chief difficulty they have is
finding the plutonium they need for the guts of the bomb.” Let’s pray they don’t
obtain it – ever!
