Title: Republicans can Lead on Mental Health Treatment
Topic: Homelessness
Discussed by Bruce Chapman
with Discovery Institute (www.discovery.org)

Part 1 of 2

Tucked away in the gun law Biden just signed is a provision increasing funding for preventive outpatient treatment for mental illness. This is an important step toward solving America’s mental-health crisis but only part of what’s needed. Happily, help may be on the way if Republicans take back Congress in November.

Bruce Campbell is the co-founder of the Discovery Institute and current Chairman of the Board. Today Bruce discusses rising crime and suicide rates, which can be directly connected to the rise in homelessness across the nation. He says: “America needs leaders who will boldly tackle some of its unrelenting problems.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Do a variety of unrelenting problems plaguing America correlate with mental illness? Terry and Bruce discuss homelessness, crime, and rising suicide rates. Bruce also reveals that nearly 50% of the homeless are mentally ill or drug addicted or both.

How have liberals treated the mentally ill since the 1960’s? Can some of the problems be traced back to the introduction of Medicaid and “community-based facilities”? Bruce explains what community-based facilities are and what they are allowed and not allowed to do to help the homeless.

Are streets, emergency rooms, and jails the new “asylum”?

Does providing housing and/or a meal actually treat the root cause of mental illness? SHORT ANSWER: No, not at all.

Are there more people diagnosed with psychosis residing in America’s prisons than in state hospitals?

Can prisons adequately provide help for the mentally ill – both short and long-term?

Book reference: “Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to Mental Health” by Dr. Thomas Insel, former head of the National Institute of Mental Health.

What are some bold steps that must be taken to combat homelessness, crime, and rising suicide rates associated with mental illness? Bruce shares some positive national legislation that has already been presented and recommends other steps that can begin at the local and state levels.
