Title: Scalia’s Court: A Legacy of Landmark Opinions and Dissents
Topic: Book Review
Discussed by Kevin Ring
with Author

Author Kevin Ring has written a great book, “Scalia’s Court: A Legacy of Landmark Opinions and Dissents”, about Justice Scalia and the impact he had on the Supreme Court. It is not a biography about the man, but rather a compilation with outstanding details of Scalia’s decisions.

The Table of Contents for “Scalia’s Court: A Legacy of Landmark Opinions and Dissents” reads as follows: Separation of Power, Race, Abortion, Gun Rights, Death Penalty, Rights of the Accused, Religious Freedom, Illegal Immigration, Homosexuality, Sexual Equality, Free Speech, Non-Speech, and Unfree Speech, and Obamacare.

Kevin Ring did a superb job of portraying Justice Scalia in the positive light he deserves. Kevin says, “He wrote opinions that influenced the country – even when he lost!” He explains one specific dissent concerning partial birth abortion which actually later became law. Listen in as Kevin  also reveals that Scalia was even able to convince several other Justices to change their opinion on cases to win the majority opinion! This demonstrations just how influential Scalia was.

A book like this is only possible because he was such a brilliant communicator and writer,” Kevin Ring states. “He cared about language. He was funny and sarcastic. But [above all] he was persuasive.” Other Justices seem downrigh t boring in comparison!

The last question asked of Kevin concerns the nomination of a new Justice. Should the Senate allow Obama’s choice or wait until the next President is sworn in? Listen in to hear Kevin’s opinion.
