Part 1 of 3

Bernie Otis is just a man who has seen a lot during his years on earth – all 86 years of them! He was involved in the design and construction of Disneyland food services and hotels in Las Vegas. Now Bernie uses his lifetime of experiences to help bring laughter to others. His heart is with others like him – those growing old but don’t want to!

Bernie has a fun and funny new book out "How to Prepare for Old Age – (Without Taking the Fun out of Life)”. The title alone tells you it’s a great read! Listen in as Bernie explains a little about why he decided to write a book that everyone can read! His wife, who tragically passed away in 2012 from cancer, was a big inspiration to him.

Bernie also talks about death, but not in a depressing way. He says to make sure you establish good relationships with all the people you meet and become aware of the opportunities that are presented to you. When Bernie asks elderly people about the regrets they have in life, the number one answer is that they did not make enough friends and keep relationships strong. “Life is more than just the last two weeks. Death should be a celebration,” he says.

Title: Part 2 of 3 - Getting Old Doesn’t Have to be Boring!

Bernie Otis now spends his days helping elderly people grow older while still having fun! He says, “Many older people don’t want to lose their independence. Their children don’t really know how to approach the issue. This results in bad situations for everyone.

Bernie urges all families to discuss the options available when their parents or grandparents become 65-75 years old. Even teenagers need to be involved in the discussion so they can learn what to do when their own parents get older. Yes, it is a difficult discussion to have, but waiting too long may be too late.

FACT: 65-75% of the deaths occur because of the result of a fall.

Part 3 of 3

Whether you are 15 or 85, it is never too late to live life to its fullest! Bernie’s advice is this: “Get up each morning and do something to help someone who needs help. Do something you like to do.” He also says it is good to have written goals, or a “bucket list” as the young people call it these days. “When you don’t have an objective, then your life is over with. Live each day actively, no matter how old you are.”

Bernie also urges you to stay involved in your elderly loved one’s life, even if they live in an assisted living facility far away. Call them up as often as you can if you can’t physically see them. Take grandchildren to visit them; it will benefit both the old and the young!

Aging begins the moment you’re bored.” – Bernie Otis
