Without electricity, can poverty be eliminated? Without electricity, can
hunger become a thing of the past? Without electricity, can we increase
life-expectancy?
Dr. Frank Clemente is a retired professor from Penn State, where he was chosen
as Professor of the Year in 2006 by the senior class. He has spent a lifetime
researching various types of energy – including coal, wind, and solar. He says
that access to energy greatly improves the quality of life. Dr. Clemente gives a
personal example of how not having access to energy and clean water greatly
affected his own family.
Before the automobile replaced horses as the main form of transportation,
disease was rampant. Before electricity, the life-expectancy was only 40 years
old. When electricity-producing coal plants were brought to cities and towns,
the quality of life improved dramatically. When cars and trucks replaced horses,
cities and towns became cleaner and there was less disease.
Dr. Frank Clemente will be the keynote speaker for the luncheon on Friday,
September 26 for the “At the Crossroads: Energy and Climate Policy Summit”.

gives another personal account of how the lack of electricity has affected his
family. He and his wife are the parents to four biological children and four
adopted children. One of their adopted children came to them at the age of 6,
weighing only 35 pounds, because of the lack of electricity in his home country.
Dr. Clemente says we must do all we can to ensure that future generations have
the same access the inexpensive, reliable energy that we have had. We must
ensure that future generations are not saddled with massive energy mandates that
will cost billions of dollars. We must ensure that future generations will have
a better quality of life.
Gross, but interesting fact: If you took a glass and filled it with water
straight from your toilet, you’d have cleaner water than 50% of the world’s
population. Why? Because they do not have access to electricity. Listen in as
Dr. Clemente discusses the many benefits of electricity and the need for coal
power.

wants everyone in the world to have the same access to electricity that we in
American have. That doesn’t mean that it is our responsibility as Americans to
provide electricity to other countries, but we can certainly give them the
knowledge on how to obtain inexpensive, reliable energy.
The world’s population is expected to increase to 9.6 Billion people by 2050.
Without access to inexpensive, reliable energy, third-world countries will never
be able to lift themselves out of poverty. In fact, many developed countries,
including the United States, are actually trying to hold back third-world
countries by attempting to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in favor of solar
and wind powered energy, which are expensive and unreliable.

Summit” on Thursday and Friday, September 25 and 26 in Houston.
