Title: Grandparents Raising Grandkids
Topic: Grandparents and Relatives Raising Children
Discussed by Melanie Flowers
with Flowers 4 Judge
Part 1 of 3
Just a couple of
years ago, over ten percent of the kids in TEXAS were living with their
grandparents or other relative.
What problems would you face if one or more of your grandkids showed up on your
door step and it became your responsibility to care for them?
How do you enroll them in school? How do you approve health care, how would you
pay for their health care? Melanie speaks with us today as a concerned parent,
please do not construe any statement as legal advice.

Title: Part 2 of 3
Topic: Grandparents and Relatives Raising Children
Discussed by Melanie Flowers
with Flowers 4 Judge
Just a couple of
years ago, over 440,000 kids in TEXAS were living with their grandparents; over
150,000 kids were living with a relative. Over 10% of the kids in
Texas are living in a household not headed by one or both of their parents.
Bad things happen to good people. Car wrecks happen. Some adults abuse drugs and
become incarcerated. Sometimes parents are not competent. What happens if a
child – a grandchild, a niece/nephew – just shows up?
Attorney Melanie Flowers suggests some steps someone should take. Melanie speaks
with us today as a concerned parent, please do not construe any statement as
legal advice.
