Title: LESSON 13: The Uniqueness of Israel
Topic: Biblical Law: A Reflection of God’s Character
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

There are many different interpretations of laws from the Bible, especially those in the Old Testament. How are we to know which ones to still follow and which ones we do not need to follow? This will be the focus of Mark Lanier’s lesson this week on the uniqueness of Israel.

For this week’s lesson, click here.

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why did God give Israel separate rules? Did He just want to be a mean God? Or was it to set them apart to reflect His character?

Why did God save the Israelites?

How can WE show the reflection of God through obeying His laws?

Are you lifting God up high in your life? Are you lifting Him up to others?

Do people even know that you are a Christian?

Scripture References: Amos 2:6; Isaiah 57:15; John 13:15

Applying the Tenth Commandment to our own lives:

Take pleasure in what is right before God.
Enjoy things – but use God’s discernment on how and when to enjoy them.

FINAL THOUGHTS: God is the ultimate recycler. He takes all our trash and makes it into something new and beautiful!

This week, Mark discusses the Ninth and Tenth Commandments: Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor and Thou Shall Not Covet.

For this week’s lesson, click here

If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email wantmore@biblical-literacy.org

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How is the Ninth Commandment a Reflection of God’s Character?

Was Jesus always honest, even if the truth would step on toes? Yep!
How is the Spirit of God Truth?
How do we know that God is real – that God is Truth?
Why do we have an inner desire to do right and struggle when we do wrong?

Applying the Ninth Commandment to our own lives:

Pledge to be truthful.
When in doubt, tell the truth.
Do what is right, not what is easy.
Scripture References: John 16; John 17

Tenth Commandment: Thou Shall Not Covet

What does “covet” mean? More on this Thursday and Friday.

Scripture References: Genesis 2:9; Genesis 3:6

God is honest. One of His core beliefs is truthfulness. God is authentic. God speaks Truth. God is Truth. Guess what? The devil is the OPPOSITE of truth!

Mark reminds us that it’s not easy being honest, but it’s the character of God, so it should be our character, too. Was Jesus always honest, even if the truth would step on toes? Yep!

How is the Spirit of God Truth?

Day 4

This week, Mark discusses the Eighth Commandment: Don’t Steal.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why are there laws about the right to own property?

Are there some people who do not believe “normal citizens” have this right?

Where do we get the word “Communism” from? Just look at Karl Marx. Don’t worry… Mark Lanier doesn’t get “too political”.

How do we know that God is a giver, not a taker, and we should be the same? (See Scriptures below.)

Applying the Eighth Commandment to Our Own Lives: Grow before the Lord in generosity, self-discipline, and transformation. More tomorrow…

Are you content with what you have?

Is it okay to desire things? Yes. Is it okay to desire things you shouldn’t have? No. Is it okay to steal the things you want and definitely shouldn’t have? Absolutely not.

Why does God want us to work and not steal? Mark offers a warning, though, about not working too much. He says: “God is not only interested in you; He is sufficient for you.”

Why are there laws about the right to own property? This is an interesting history lesson. Tune in tomorrow as Mark continues with this and talks about one man who did not agree with this and has many, many followers…

Day 5

Are the 10 Commandments the only laws Christians should follow today?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

MYTH #1 ABOUT BIBLICAL LAW: The Law doesn’t apply to us today because Jesus nailed it to the cross.

What about Scriptures like Romans 6:14 “the believer is not under law, but under grace” and Ephesians 2:15 “abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances”? What do these passages mean? Mark reminds us that we must look at MORE Scripture before and after certain verses to see the full context… Did Jesus abolish the Law?

MYTH #2 ABOUT BIBLICAL LAW: The moral sections of the Old Testament Law is binding on believers, but not “other” sections.

Why does this sound so appealing to many people? What are “moral” laws in the Old Testament? Do Old Testament Laws that are not mentioned in the New Testament still apply to us today?

Day 5

Science offers great hopes for tomorrow. Scientific knowledge is constantly expanding and things that were science-fiction 50 years ago are taken for granted today.

To some degree, people may fall prey to the idea that all areas of civilization progress like science does. This assessment would not be accurate or fair. A clear example is in the area of law.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What were the commands AFTER the 10 Commandments?

Did God command any of the other legal codes before OR after the 10 Commandments?

Back to the Basics: God made everyone to be in His image. We share God’s moral make-up. What is good for God is good for us. Our holiness comes from Jesus (not the law).

Closing Scripture: Psalm 17:15
