Day 5
Mark never thought that he would still be teaching virtually 22 weeks into the Coronavirus Epidemic. But, here we are…
This week, he looks at New Testament Scriptures (like John 8) and travels backward to Abraham.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Mark goes back to John 8, where he began class back on Monday. Jesus claimed he talked to Abraham and the people thought he was crazy – a demon, in fact! How did he respond to their unbelief?
Final Thoughts:
Humanity has thrown away the truth of God to be their own boss, therefore our sin has become our master.
But we are meant for something more! Cry out to God today to save you! He has unconditional love for you!

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all tell pretty much the same stories. Why and how are John’s different?
How did John tell the crucifixion story? Why did he point out that Jesus carried his own cross? Did Isaac carry his own wood, too? Mark reads from John 19:17 and John 1:29.

What is so special about the Tabernacle? Is it one specific place now? Is it in our hearts? Is it everywhere? Mark reads from Exodus 40:34-35.
When did the Tabernacle become the Temple? Did the people violate the Temple, too? Did the glory of the Lord depart from the Temple? Mark uses Ezekiel 10 and 11 to explain this…
Did God just leave the people? Or did He make a promise to the people? Mark uses several Scriptures to reveal how God will return in glory.

Mark Lanier continues his look at the Road to Emmaus. This week his focus will be on Jonah. What is the purpose/message/theology of the story? Is it real or just an illustration?
If you have a prayer request, need Scripture encouragement, or would like a copy of Mark’s lessons each week, email
wantmore@biblical-literacy.org
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why does Mark have a complex about teaching on Jonah? Funny story!
Did Jonah “really” spend three days in the belly of a giant fish?
Why is the book of Jonah one of Mark’s three favorite books in the Old Testament?
Why didn’t Jonah go to Nineveh? Mark uses a map of the Middle East to explain the trip Jonah would have taken to get as far away as possible from Nineveh.
Tune in tomorrow as Mark continues to explain Jonah’s voyage and the “fish” that “swallowed” Jonah.

Scripture Passage: Luke 24:13-35 The Road to Emmaus
Click here to view Mark’s lesson on YouTube.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Mark concludes his discussion of Luke’s version of the crucifixion of Jesus.
LITTLE DETAILS WE MISS:
“The journey to faith is a journey from sad, thick-headedness to enthusiastic joy.” This statement from Mark pretty much sums it up, but we will continue with the lesson anyway…
Why were they men sad? Well, obviously because Jesus had just been crucified. But why else were they sad?
Why did Jesus want to know why the men were sad? What was Jesus’s response to their story?

Topic: Biblical Study while Living with Corona
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)
Day 2
This lesson was taught the Sunday after Easter; therefore, there are several references to Easter in Mark’s lesson this week.
A lot of people all around the world get dressed up and excited for Easter. They go to church and remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. But what happens after Easter? Where is the excitement? Where is the dedication? Where did all the people go?

Questions/Issues Discussed:
LUKE’S JOURNEY:
Who was Luke?
Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. He wrote the books to Theophilus, a student.
Luke is the longest Gospel.
Why did he write so much about journeys?
What stories does the Gospel of Luke include that the other Gospels don’t?
What stories in Acts does Luke write about?
Mark says that the story in Luke 24 is written like an hourglass. He begins this explanation today, but tune in tomorrow for more!

Day 5
What did Easter Sunday look like to you?
Did it feel different? It did for me and my family, for sure! Enjoy a special “Easter Round 2” lesson from Mark Lanier.
Click here to view Mark’s lesson on YouTube.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
What does the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and the empty tomb mean to us?
What storms are ahead for us? Will life continue in quarantine or will it end? WHEN will it end?
Mark describes two of the paintings in the chapel – one is on the dome on the ceiling! Click
here and skip ahead to the 32-minute mark to see these beautiful paintings. (You can also use this link to hear the special song, “Germs on the Run” by Phil Keaggy.”
NOTE: Former CFBC Pastor David Fleming once again put together a fabulous list of scriptures for you to study this week. Email
info@lanierfoundation.org to get your copy of the “Victories of God” scriptures. You can also request the “God’s Promises” and “God Working in Us” scripture lists, as well, if you missed those.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Let the storms rage and the winds blow, because we are standing on a rock!

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why the empty tomb?
Simple: The empty tomb is the victory of God. Sin cannot win over God.
If there is no empty tomb, why would we even go to church (or online church)?
If there is no empty tomb, we have no reason to even be excited about anything!
Scripture References:
1 Corinthians 15:12-19
Romans 6:8

Questions/Issues Discussed:
How does a just God apply justice without destroying humanity?
Sin is like cancer. You can speak, but if you gossip – that’s cancer. You can work, but if you cheat at your job or don’t do it properly (lie) – that’s cancer. Jesus took that cancer on himself when he died on the cross. That’s why his death was necessary.
Scripture reference: Galatians 3:13

Questions/Issues Discussed:
How will the Coronavirus change the world in the future? Mark discusses a poll of twenty “experts” and what their opinions mean for Christians.
How has the cross impacted history? Mark says this: “As much as the Coronavirus may be a hinge upon which this world pivots, and the world may never be the same again… I’ll tell you this: It’s not the hub of history. The hub of history is the cross of Jesus Christ and the empty tomb.”
Note: Mark Lanier mentions Pastor Stephen Trammell’s Easter sermon in today’s segment. If you missed it, don’t worry! We have it on our website, too. Search the archives on our homepage, using the days April 20-25. Directly below Mark’s lesson each day is the sermon segment. Easy peasy.

What instructions did God give to the Israelites at this time? Did God also issue a warning?
Now enter the Babylonians… Who and where did they conquer? What did they do to the Jews?
Who was Jeremiah? What did God tell him to do? Were the Israelites to just sit down and be defeated? Or did God command Jeremiah to encourage the people to live life to the fullest? Mark reads from Jeremiah 29…
