Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

Are you feeling a little weird right now? Don’t worry! Most people are, too! Mark is in the same boat. This week, he reminds us that God is still in control.

Mark Lanier’s Biblical Literacy lesson has gone ONLINE for the next few weeks out of precaution due to the Coronavirus. On Sunday, March 15, Mark taught on Lent, including Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday, and Good Friday.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is Good Friday? Why do we celebrate Good Friday? Mark reads from John 19:28-30 and shares a story about Lubbock, because… Lubbock.

Do ALL roads lead to Christ? Mark says: “The hub of all roads of history lead to Christ”. From the Garden of Eden until present day: Jesus is the hub of all humanity.

Why did Jesus say “I thirst” before he died? Was it to fulfill his mission on earth?

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Keep your eyes focused on what God is doing. Don’t lose track of the community of believers. Look for ways to further His Kingdom during this time.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is Palm Sunday? Mark looks at John 12:12-15. He points out three things that he finds interesting:
1. The people went out to meet Jesus --- When is the last time you got excited to “meet Jesus”?
2. The people cried out “Hosanna!” --- What does Hosanna mean?
3. Jesus entered on a donkey’s colt --- Why didn’t Jesus ride on a horse? (Zachariah 9:9)

Tune in tomorrow as Mark discusses why we celebrate Good Friday.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Have you ever been wrong? Me, too! Mark continues in Mark 12:24-27. Why did Jesus say: “You are quite wrong!” in verse 27? Because they did not know the Scriptures and they did not know the power of God. Does this mean that people who know the Scriptures are never wrong? Absolutely not! Listen as Mark explains…

So…What is “Lent”? Why has it been important to Christians for centuries? Why do people “give up something” for Lent?

Mark reminds us of “Lazarus Saturday”. Why did Jesus take his time getting to his friend? Was he being mean or teaching a lesson on faith? Have you ever experienced the same situation as Lazarus’s sisters?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

When and where did Spring Break originate? No, it wasn’t in the 1960’s in Florida…

FUN FACT: Pope Gregory began the “God Bless You” trend during the plague.

Think about this: If the church survived the plague and the Spanish Flu, don’t you think the church can survive the Coronavirus?

Tune in tomorrow for more on Mark 12:24-27.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How did the church begin? Did some people try to stop the Christians? Were they persecuted and even killed? What other factors tried to stop the church? Mark reviews some history, saying the church was basically “functioning illiterate”. But good news: The church adapted – just like we are today!

Did you know that the plague normally broke out in the springtime? Kind of makes our situation make a little bit more sense. Tune in tomorrow as Mark discusses more about the plague.
