The BIG questions for this week, though, is: Who is Jesus?
Scripture Reference: John 20:30-31
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Mark promised to discuss Nathaniel in this lesson… Now it’s time!
Mark recommends reading Genesis 27:30-33 – the story about Jacob and Esau to understand who Nathaniel was.
How did Jesus know who Nathaniel was? Was Nathaniel confused? Why did he believe immediately?
Mark references the song “Beneath
the Cross of Jesus”.
POINTS FOR HOME:
Jesus: The Lamb of God
Jesus: Worthy of following and bringing others

Title: The Adulteress
Topic: Reading the Old Testament through the Gospel of John
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)
Part 5
Is the Gospel of John that we read today the original manuscript? Is it 100% true and accurate?
Mark Lanier uses a Timeline of Western Intellectual History to explain the various ways the Bible has been translated correctly and incorrectly over the centuries. He focuses on the story of
The Adulteress in John 7:52–8:11.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Over the past few days Mark discussed the various reasons translations of the Bible have changed over the centuries. Today he ties all of this information together to explain why some translations of the Bible do not include John 7:53–8:11.
This story bothers Mark. Here are some questions he has:
Why did the pharisees bring the woman to Jesus?
Did the pharisees catch her in the act of adultery? Or did the man rat on her? Why didn’t the man get in trouble? He was sinning, too! Mark references Leviticus 20:10 and Exodus 31.
What was Jesus’ response to the pharisees? Mark says this: “Don’t start playing Bible trivia with Jesus. You will lose!”
How did Jesus offer compassion to the woman?

The Adulteress in John 7:52–8:11.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Is the King James translation of the Bible accurate? Mark points out that many of the original copies of the Bible had not been discovered yet; therefore, translators used the Latin translation to transpose into English. Does this mean the KJV is wrong? Absolutely not!
The “Codex Vaticanus”, dating back to the 300’s, is one of Mark’s favorite manuscripts of the Greek New Testament. Listen as he explains why…

Before modern technology, many people would gather together. A speaker would dictate to the people what was to be written down. Mark discusses the many problems with this method of writing books…
The question Mark focuses on the rest of the week is this: “How reliable are ancient documents?”
What are some very old fragments of original writings have been discovered? Are the originals the exact same as our copies today?
There are over 19,000 copies of the Greek New Testament translated into different languages. How do original copies of compare to our copies today?

How does the average Greek New Testament read for these verses? Mark uses a hilarious story from his time in college to explain “variant readings”. Trust me – it’s funny and very interesting! Moral of the story: Stick to the truth in the Bible.
Why is it important to know the truth about the Bible? Why is it VITAL that we teach our children the truth? Mark has a great explanation.

Day 2
This week, Mark Lanier takes a look at John 5:1-9, discussing Jesus, God, and the Law.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
What are some things that stand out to Mark about this week’s Scripture Passage?
Why didn’t John give a reason for the feast? He usually did! Why not now?
Scripture References of specific feasts that John mentions:
The Wedding Feast: John 2:13
Passover: John 6:4
Feast of the Booths: John 7:1

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why do we tend to think in random patterns? Mark shares how he loves crossword puzzles! And he also loves the Bible! What do they have in common? Clues!!! But be careful! It’s tempting to include our own thoughts or read something extra in the text…
Mark also shares a story about WW2 and Hitler’s so-called “guidance system”…
Mark reads the Scripture for this week. Tune in tomorrow as Mark discusses what stands out to him in this passage…

Title: Untangling Scripture
Topic: Reading the Old Testament through the Gospel of John
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)
Day 5
Sometimes it is difficult to understand scripture. We all get stuck sometimes.
This week, Mark uses John 4:43-54 to help us untangle some hard-to-understand Scripture.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why do you believe in Jesus?
What is the one thing that God wants from us? This is a no-brainer for Christians, but how do we explain this to non-believers?
To take it one step further… Why do we follow Jesus? What do WE get from following him?
Why should Christians care about politics? Why should we care if a politician (or anyone) is a Christian?
Points for Home:
Honor and believe what Jesus said
Honor Jesus as the Messiah
Honor the God who saves

Day 4
Sometimes it is difficult to understand scripture. We all get stuck sometimes.
This week, Mark uses John 4:43-54 to help us untangle some hard-to-understand Scripture.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why does John use “parallel statements” in his writings? How does this help us to better understand the Scripture?
Why did Jesus go to Galilee? Didn’t he know what would happen?
We all need Jesus. Every single one of us. BUT why did Jesus seek out those who seemed to be at rock bottom? When was the last time you did?
Mark shares about an email exchange he recently had with a person who is struggling to understand how “good people” are different than Christians…

This week, Mark uses John 4:43-54 to help us untangle some hard-to-understand Scripture.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why is it important to know that the official came to Jesus (not Jesus finding the man)?
Why did Jesus address the crowd, not just the man?
Jesus is more than a magician. Did the people in Galilee truly believe this?
Mark references Isaiah 35:4-6 to explain why Jesus went to heal the official’s son…
Why does John link stories together so specifically (from the wedding to Nicodemus to the woman at the well to the official’s son)? More on this tomorrow!

Lanier teaches on the “Woman at the Well”. This is a story many people in the church shy away from because the woman was not what you would call “holy” or “pure”. But remember: God didn’t send Jesus to save perfect people – because there aren’t any!
Scripture Passage: John 4:1-46
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Mark continues to explain why “word order” and the Greek really matters when studying the Bible…
Points for Home:
1. You cannot distract God. Don’t even try!
2. Don’t play games with God. It will never work out well for you.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Men almost never spoke to a woman in public, especially a woman he didn’t know. The woman probably would never have spoken to Jesus if he hadn’t spoken to her first. Why didn’t the disciples question this conversation?
Several times in the book of John, John wrote about Jesus being “thirsty”. What does he mean by this?
Mark offers a brief, but descriptive, lesson from John about Jesus’ passion for saving the lost. How does this compare to Paul’s explanation in Ephesians?
