Title: Science and Faith: Enuma Elish vs Genesis
Topic: Is God Guilty of Fraud
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)
Day 5
Mark Lanier has been teaching about the role of science within our Christian faith. This week, Mark compares Genesis to the Enuma Elish, which is a different account of Creation.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
What were the “gods” in the Enuma Elish like? Were they like God or just super-sized humans?
Were the “gods” friendly or often jealous and violent? Mark discusses another battle – this time for the four winds… NOTE: This is pretty graphic, so be careful with little ears around!
How do we know that God created the universe?
Join Mark next week as he compares the Egyptian Book of the Dead story to Genesis 1.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Review of week 1 of Creation vs Evolution:
Why should we keep the integrity of Scripture?
Do we still need God?
How did the disciples learn about creation?
Why is it important to remember ALL of history and not just some of it?
Do too many people read the Bible out of context?

Day 5
Is God a God of faith or a God of science?
This is a very controversial topic that is not discussed nearly enough, especially in Baptist churches.
This week is Part 3 of “Is God a God of Faith or a God of Science”. Mark discusses five reasons Christians should embrace science.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
5 Reasons Christians Should Embrace Science:
1. It will enhance our ability to read the Bible. (This was in Tuesday’s segment.)
2. It will have a positive effect on our evangelism. (This was Wednesday’s segment.)
3. We learn more of God through science and the world. (This was Thursday’s segment.)
4. Ethical issues demand that faith dialogues with science. (This was Thursday’s segment, too.)
5. God is not discussed in science books.
Are all scientists unbelievers? Absolutely not!
Simon Conway Morris is one of the leading evolution experts in the world, but he is a Christian! Why?
Why does faith need to be taught along with science?
Take Action Now Steps:
1. Praise God all day long
2. Trust God all day long
3. Learn about God all day long

with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)
Day 3
Is God a God of faith or a God of science?
This is a very controversial topic that is not discussed nearly enough, especially in Baptist churches.
Over the next few weeks, Mark Lanier will unpack this question. While he does, he wants you to keep an open mind. Lay aside any biases you may have and listen very closely to all the evidence he presents.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why do people choose faith over medicine?
1. Religious conflicts
2. Controversy in society
3. Medical uncertainty – Mark offers several examples of this conflict…
Are faith and science opposite views? Mark says: “This is not the biblical view!”
So… what DOES the Bible teach about science?
Take Responsibility!
Mark uses the Scientific Method to explain….
Scripture References: Genesis 2:15; 1 Samuel 1:12; and Isaiah 2:11-12.

Day 2
Is God a God of faith or a God of science?
This is a very controversial topic that is not discussed nearly enough, especially in Baptist churches.
Over the next few weeks, Mark Lanier will unpack this question. While he does, he wants you to keep an open mind. Lay aside any biases you may have and listen very closely to all the evidence he presents.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Are faith and science in competition to each other?
Two areas of concern:
1. Creation or Evolution?
Creation: Where did God come from? If nothing created God, then what…???
Evolution: Where did gorillas come from? If nothing created gorillas, then what…???
2. Faith or Medicine?
Mark uses Matthew chapters 1-8 and the Sermon on the Mount…
Mark also uses a several examples from a medical study entitled “When patients choose faith over medicine”. Tune in tomorrow as he discusses three conflicts from this study.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Why is the human race so competitive? Mark uses two unlikely explanations: Herbert Spencer, a Darwinist, and Richard Dawkins, an atheist.
Spencer believe it is in our DNA (pg 444 of his book: “Principles of Biology”).
Dawkins said: “Faith is belief in the teeth of the evidence that science gives” in his book, “The Selfish Gene”.
Are these explanations logical and reasonable?
Are faith and science in competition to each other? Not necessarily… Tune in tomorrow for more on this!

Day 5
What is wrong with the Biblical picture of both a loving AND hateful God?
Mark Lanier continues with his theme: “Is God a God of War or a God of Peace”. This week, his focus is on ideas and considerations – not solutions!
Questions/Issues Discussed:
FAIR OR UNFAIR QUESTION?
What is the future of evil? Simple answer: DEATH!
Does evil gradually get “better”?
Take Action Steps:
1. See a mind change through prayer and worship. (Romans 12:2)
2. Wait for healing. Remember some days are good. Some days are bad. But healing is coming. (Revelation 21:5)
3. Struggle for God’s good. Do what you can NOW to lessen the pain. (Matthew 25:35-36)

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Should God just let us live for a really long time?
FAIR OR UNFAIR QUESTION?
Why is there evil in the world?
Why can’t ALL the world be beautiful?
Does sin bring destruction to beauty? Mark says: “The beauty of this world is marred by sin. This is why there is evil.”
Why does God give us choices?
Where is God?
Have you ever asked this same question: Where are you God?
Mark says: “God is working to bring good from evil, so don’t blame Him!”
Why does God give us choices?
Does sin and evil break God’s heart?
Scripture Reference: Genesis 3. This was God’s warning to us!

Questions/Issues Discussed:
FAIR OR UNFAIR QUESTION?
What is evil? Not examples of evil, but the definition…?
Is evil a fact or an opinion?
Is evil subjective?
Is evil how society feels?
Is evil historical values?
Mark says this: “To someone who believes in the Biblical God, evil and good are defined by a moral God. We must accept His Word.”
Should God just let us live for a really long time? Would you WANT to live for a really long time? Tune in tomorrow for more on this…

Questions/Issues Discussed:
What is the Socratic Method?
Are you asking the “right” questions? Mark offers an example of a case study: The Bible or the Enlightenment: which is the source of American religious liberty?
Why would a loving, moral God use evil or allow evil to occur?
While this is a logical question, is it fair?
FAIR OR UNFAIR QUESTION?

If you are a parent, you have probably heard the question “But why?” And you have probably responded “Because I said so!” on more than one occasion! But this answer is not always good enough…
Why is honesty important?
Are there ever gray areas?
Are some answers absolute?
Are some answers hard to swallow?

HOW SHOULD WE READ AND INTERPRET THE BIBLE?
Does God have justifiable reasons? Book reference: “Hard Sayings on the Bible”. What did God tell Abraham about his future? Was God’s plan fair and just? Or did God have a reason for His judgment?
Are God’s actions always for the greater good?
Baneful: the baneful injection of degenerate idolatry and moral depravity. What does that even mean? Listen as Mark Lanier translates!

Questions/Issues Discussed:
HOW SHOULD WE READ AND INTERPRET THE BIBLE?
Does God have divine immunity?
Book Reference:
“Show Them No Mercy: 4 Views on God and Canaanite Genocide”.
Is God good? Or is God evil? If God has immunity, is He “only” good?
Will we ever understand God’s point of view? Does God WANT us to continue to learn more about Him in an attempt to understand Him?

2. Some alter God himself
Mark continues his illustration of Marcion, a heretic whose writings have been destroyed. Why? Because his ideas were really crazy!!
3. Some alter how we read the Bible
Ancient Example: Origins and Philo of Alexandria
Mark likens Philo’s works to a three-layer cake: literal, moral, and allegorical.
Another Ancient Example using the allegorical level: Joshua: humanity’s sin; age and gender; and livestock
How does Joshua “represent” Jesus?
Modern Example: Eric Seibert’s
“Disturbing Divine Behavior”. Is he wrong or right?

Day 1
Mark Lanier has
decided to change the name of his current series from God’s Curriculum
Vitae to “IS GOD GUILTY OF FRAUD?” This week, he will be examining and investigating a very popular question, especially from unbelievers: “Is God a God of war or is He a God of peace?”
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Mark begins the lesson with a story about a time he was invited to speak to a class at Wheaton College. He asked the class this question: What is your own personal struggle with believing there is a God and if He is really who He says He is? What were the results of this informal survey?
IS GOD A GOD OF WAR OR A GOD OF PEACE?
What does this question even mean? Of course, He is a God of peace! But… there is so much war in the world – and in the Bible! How can this be? Mark uses Aristotle as an example…
Over the next few days, Mark will be comparing 1 Samuel 15:3 to several verses in both the Old and New Testaments.
