Title: 11 Myths of Higher Education
Topic: Is College Worth the Cost?
Discussed by Dr. Thomas Lindsay
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)
Part 1 of 3
In America, there is a three-fold crisis in higher education:
1. College is becoming increasingly unaffordable.
2. High tuition rates are forcing students and their parents to burden themselves with historically high student loan debt.
3. Thirty-six percent of students, after spending four years in college, demonstrate little-to-no improvement in their capacities for critical thinking, complex reasoning, and clear writing.
Dr. Thomas Lindsay is the Director of The Center for Innovation in Education within the
Texas Public Policy Foundation. Listen as he discusses the dire situation of college tuition and education in America. He has “11 Myths in Higher Education” that every parent must read immediately.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Are too many college students (and their parents) paying too much and learning too little?
When did people begin to see a problem?
What is being done about this?
Myth #1: Our public universities are fulfilling their constitutional obligation to protect the First Amendment on their campuses.
FACT: At least one-third of American universities and colleges have speech codes.
“If we lose free speech on our campuses, it’s just a matter of time before we lose it in the public square,” Dr. Lindsay warns.

Are parents beginning to push back against the increasing higher education
tuition costs?
Myth #6: In Texas, tuition had to increase to make up for state cuts in
higher education. Listen as Dr. Lindsay reveals some shocking numbers here!
Do the majority of students still attend college full-time?
Do Federal Education Funds go to poor students?
Myth #9: Administrative costs have remained steady and have not
contributed to skyrocketing tuitions and student debt. This one is actually
laughable!
Is a college degree required to prove you are “smart”?
Parents: Before sending your student to college, schedule a meeting
with the recruiting office. Ask them how many companies are recruiting from that
particular college in the area of study your child wishes to graduate. This is
very important! If not many students find jobs quickly, move on to the next
college.
