Title: Lessons from Labor Day
Topic: Lessons from Labor Day
Discussed by Pastor David Fleming
with Champion Forest Baptist Church (www.ChampionForest.org)

Day 5

This week’s sermon is a reminder of what Labor Day truly means – Biblical style. Pastor David Fleming uses passages from both the New and Old Testaments to encourage us to take advantage of the Sabbath and not take advantage of the time God has given us here on earth with the ones we love.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How to redeem and use the space in between:
1. Invest time in building relationships (God, family, friends)
2. Take care of your body with exercise – it makes you happy!
3. Have some fun – take vacations!
4. Protect your margins – take time for yourself!

We all have 24 hours each day. If God had more He wanted us to do, He would have given us 25 hours.

The Key to Balance: Work hard. Rest easy. And live well in between.

Day 4

This week’s sermon is a reminder of what Labor Day truly means – Biblical style. Pastor David Fleming uses passages from both the New and Old Testaments to encourage us to take advantage of the Sabbath and not take advantage of the time God has given us here on earth with the ones we love.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

(continued from Wednesday…)
How can we labor for God?

2. Take time to rest (Mark 6:31a)

God doesn’t take a day off so you can!” Pastor Fleming reminds us.

FACT: The CDC has labeled sleep deprivation as a major health epidemic in America. There are quite a few health risks that are associated with sleep deprivation, as well. Listen as Pastor Fleming reveals more information… Pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship, Honolulu, Hawaii, Wayne Cordeiro, once wrote about experiencing “burnout”: “Your soul is like a battery that discharges each time you give your life away. It needs to be recharged regularly.

3. Make space to live (Mark 6:31a-32)

God did not make us to work so hard that we do not have space to live,” Pastor Fleming. What does leisure mean in this passage? Breaking News! Pastor Fleming is human, too! Listen as he shares a personal story about the drive-thru at CFA… What are you doing with your life outside of work? Are you too busy to rest? Are you too busy to have fun? Are you too busy to enjoy a hobby?

Day 3

This week’s sermon is a reminder of what Labor Day truly means – Biblical style. Pastor David Fleming uses passages from both the New and Old Testaments to encourage us to take advantage of the Sabbath and not take advantage of the time God has given us here on earth with the ones we love.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

(continued from Tuesday…)
How can we labor for God?

2. Take time to rest (Mark 6:31a)

Why did God rest? What did God say of HIS day of rest? Did God model the need for rest for us to follow? Did God command us to rest? If so, why don’t follow this commandment like we follow the other nine? Do you rest enough? Why is rest important for our work? Why do we feel guilty for resting?

John Piper once said: “Sleep is a parable that God is God and we are mere men. God handles the world quite nicely while the hemisphere sleeps. Sleep is like a broken record with the same message every day: Man is not sovereign. Man is not sovereign. Man is not sovereign.” Will your co-workers survive without you? Will you survive without them?

Day 2

This week’s sermon is a reminder of what Labor Day truly means – Biblical style. Pastor David Fleming uses passages from both the New and Old Testaments to encourage us to take advantage of the Sabbath and not take advantage of the time God has given us here on earth with the ones we love.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

(continued from Monday…)
How can we labor for God?

1. Work hard to provide (Mark 6:30 and Genesis 2:15)

Pastor Fleming also references Colossians 3:23-24… Do you trust that God knows what’s best for you – even in your place of employment? We do our best work OUTSIDE the church. We learn many thing: perseverance, patience, endurance, long suffering, unconditional love, spiritual principles, and trust. Concerning your job, Pastor Fleming says: “You get paid to serve God there!” Are you “pastoring” the people at your workplace?

2. Take time to rest (Mark 6:31a) Listen as Pastor Fleming reveals some labor statistics…

Extra Scripture Reference: Exodus 20:8 – Remember the Sabbath What is the Sabbath? Why did God rest?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

What is Labor Day?

Do you labor for God?

How can we labor for God?

1. Work hard to provide (Mark 6:30 and Genesis 2:15)

Are you wasting your life just doing something to get by? Did God hardwire hard work into our DNA? Your job is a divine appointment for God. (Pastor Fleming will expand on this tomorrow…)

Does God believe in hard work? Do you know how many hours you will work in your lifetime (based on a 9-5 job)? HINT: It’s a lot!
