Have you ever considered how great God is? Have you ever really, really thought about it? He is amazing!! From the very beginning in the Garden of Eden, through the flood, through the wilderness, through all of history, God has sustained and taken care of His people. Trust that He is doing the same for you.

Today’s passage is similar to yesterday’s in verse 6. In both verses, Moses is telling the Israelites to not be afraid because the Lord will go before them and is with them.
What are you dreading? What do you fear? Give those worries to God right now! He wants you to! That’s what He is here for.

Sometimes applying lessons from the Torah in our lives is difficult, like in today’s passage. God was giving instructions to the Israelites about what to do when they come in contact with a dead person. This was actually a fairly common occurrence back then; today, not so much! However, we must remember that death is still the result of sin; we just go to God differently now with our confessions…

Yesterday, the topic of Mark’s devotion was “envy”. Today, he discusses rebellion against God. What happens when we rebel? Will good or bad things happen to us and our families? One of the worst “diseases” is envy. It spreads like wildfire. Just ask Moses and Aaron – when you get to heaven, that is. Editor’s note: Have you ever told your kids: “Don’t sit to close to the TV or your eyes will cross”? They probably listened to the warning when they were young, right? Well, once they grew older and realized that wasn’t really going to happen, they probably sat too close to the TV once or twice…
Today’s passage is a warning from God about the significance of the holy sanctuary. Only the high priest was allowed to enter certain areas once a year. King Uzziah did not heed this warning – and he died. But Isaiah did the same thing and he was given a special mission from God! Why? What was the difference?

Is confession still important in a Christian’s life today? You bet it is! Mark uses the twelve-step program,
Alcoholics Anonymous, as an example in today’s devotion. Confession starts a process that is vital to honest living, taking what is hidden and bringing it out into the open.
Think about what you need to confess to God today. Give those secrets to God and seek His forgiveness. Then, be willing to follow His lead.

“Don’t make me tell you twice!” This is a warning pretty much every parent has used at least once when disciplining their child. In today’s Scripture passage, as well as throughout the Bible, God speaks of disciplining His children as a parent. The Christian experience does not remove the Lord’s discipline, nor did Jesus dying on the cross.

“We are what we eat” is something we have all heard. Just as you must be mindful about the food/drink you put in your body, you must be careful about the words and thoughts you put in your mind – and heart.
A sin offering, as mentioned in today’s Scripture, was to make the people holy in spite of their actions and sins. A sin offering was not ordinary. It was for God and before God. The people presented the offering in a specific way, which God received in a specific way. Now, Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice.

In today’s Scripture, God gave instructions to Moses concerning the way they should burn a fire for sacrifice. This was NOT a suggestion. God was serious! Since people sin all day long, the fire must be burned all day long!
Although we don’t burn fires all day long to sacrifice animals for our sins, we do no need to keep our hearts and minds set on God all day long. Mark’s devotion today explains why and how we do this…

Mark Lanier is a trial lawyer. In today’s devotion, he uses an illustration he often uses in the courtroom: anchoring. This is a concept that most people can learn quickly to remember details.
However, this can cause problems when learning about God and the Bible. We have an idea of who God should be and what He should do. When our plans do not align with His, we get confused – or even angry.
Mark writes: “God isn’t something we make in our image. He isn’t something we manufacture out of what seems right or sensible to us. God exists on His own.” This is what God was trying to explain to the Israelites on Mount Sinai…

Has God ever “not” kept a promise to you? After all, the wise Bob Dylan once said: “God don’t make promises the He don’t keep.” This doesn’t mean you will always get what you want – but you will get what God wants you to have! Mark reminds us of the
Prodigal Son in today’s devotion.

Are you living your life addicted to a schedule? Does your work/school/parent life revolve around the calendar? Mark doesn’t advocate for a “schedule anarchy”, but he does offer a warning and advice in today’s devotion. He writes: “My days may be tied to a calendar, but I want my calendar tied to God’s will.” Live a grand life – the life God has planned for you!

The Passover is a Holy Time for Jews. It is also a celebration. The first Passover written about in these verses was also a promise from God. The same is true for the Lord’s Supper, which is a Christian celebration. Mark writes: “No matter how dark the night, or how genuine the fears, God is a redeemer.”

Bad things happen to good people every day. Natural disasters are definitely a major cause, but oftentimes it is human attitude and thoughtlessness that creeps in, catching us off guard.
Moses definitely experienced the latter, evidenced in today’s scripture passage. Pharaoh’s actions and continued disobedience to God directly affected Moses and his people. However, many people mistakenly believe that God is to blame for hardening Pharaoh’s heart.
Mark explains why this is absolutely not true in today’s devotion…

Too many today just pay “lip service” to God. They may thank Him when things are going well, but they don’t really honor Him. This is much like Pharaoh. Our perspective changes when we have complete faith and trust in God. This is the way Joseph lived his life. When his brothers showed up at his door, years after they sold him into slavery, he could have turned them away and sought revenge. What is your reaction to really good news? Have you ever burned with desire to share your good news with others? In today’s passage, Rachel couldn’t wait to share the good news she received. She didn’t hesitate or wait – she RAN! This reminds Mark of the Parable of the Prodigal Son… Some things are just worth running for…

Part 1 - Day 5
Mark Lanier is writing another devotional! Yay! This new book will be a daily devotional guide based on the Torah. For the next several weeks, Mark will be offering a glimpse into some of those writings.
NOTE: At the end of January, the Champion Forest Baptist Church body will begin a study on Colossians. This includes Mark’s class. If you do not have a church home, this is the perfect time to visit! Click
here for more details.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Do you have a hard time giving your all to Jesus? Me, too! How can you change that? Stop throwing a fit like a toddler, yelling “mine, mine, mine!” and start saying “yours, yours, yours”.
The last Torah devotion Mark discusses this week is from Exodus 35:30-33, which is the beginning of the construction of the Temple.
God has called YOU by name. He doesn’t call you as a group or even a family. He has called YOU. He has called you as an individual. More importantly, He not only calls you, He WANTS you! He knows everything about you and He still WANTS you! He knows what you’ve done and He doesn’t care!
Finally, don’t look to others for something to do. He will make a way. Once you discover His will and plan for your life, don’t compare yourself to others who are doing the same thing. Just bring your strengths (and even your weaknesses!) to His altar and He will handle the rest. Just trust Him.

What does “zchr” mean? Does it have anything to do with the name “Zechariah”? How do the Hebrew and English translations differ? Listen as Mark tells a story about an author/professor who wrote on this topic and how Mark was able to locate him. It’s a funny story!
Next Torah Devotional: Exodus 35:21 “And everyone who was willing and whose heart moved them came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the tent of meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:
FIFTH TORAH DEVOTION: God is an Action God
How is God an “action God”?
Prayer: For God to act in your life
SIXTH TORAH DEVOTION: The Power of Obedience
Deuteronomy 30:11-14 “11For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.
12It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend
to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’
13Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear
it and do it?’14But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.”
Why is it so hard to be obedient?

from the Life of Christ” series to bring back Torah Devotionals. He will be sharing some of his favorite devotionals from his book on the subject, which is almost ready for final print! Stay tuned in coming weeks for information about its release.
Don’t worry! Next week, Mark will be back with the “Devotions from the Life of Christ” series with a look at the Woman at the Well.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
FIRST TORAH DEVOTION: To Whom Do You Listen?
Numbers 14:39 “When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly.”
What is the backstory?
Where do you get your advice for life decisions? Are you listening to God or others?
Mark advises this: “Recognize the strength of counsel from those who follow God and live faithfully.”
Prayer: For ears to hear and hearts to obey

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Fifth Devotional: Deuteronomy 32:18
Where is your focus?
Magicians practice and train for years to keep our focus away from their trick. They want to trick you!
Are you looking at the shadows or the light? How you view the world will determine your focus.
Are you plugged in to God? If not, you will fall for anything and become distracted.
Final Devotional: Deuteronomy 34:9
We’re at the end of the Torah! This verse reads: “Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.”
Why on earth does Mark use this particular verse to end his Torah devotional book? Well, that’s not the end of Deuteronomy! Keep reading verses 10-12…

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Fourth Devotional: Deuteronomy 32:1-4
LISTEN UP! Moses had something important to say. He told the people “Give ear oh heavens!” He wasn’t just talking to the Israelites; he was talking to everyone and everything!
What did he have to say that was so important?
Why does God want to use YOU? Are you qualified?
Fifth Devotional: Deuteronomy 32:18
Where is your focus? Mark will expand on this tomorrow!

Second Devotional: Deuteronomy 31:6
Is the protection of God a real thing, or just metaphorical?
Are you dreading something – a problem, a hard task, a divorce? What are you doing about it?
Remember what Moses said: “Be strong and courageous!”
Third Devotional: Deuteronomy 31:8
Is God really by your side – no matter what – no matter when?
Listen as Mark discusses your “God sandwich”…
The Hebrew word for dismayed is “chatat” (kuh-taught), but the root of the word means “to bust or shatter”.
Scripture reference: Jeremiah 51:56.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
What is a “dying declaration”? Yes – this is relevant to Torah devotions! Listen in!
First Devotional: Deuteronomy 33:1, 27
What was Moses’ dying declaration?
Before he died, Moses did a lot of good deeds, right? He also did a lot of not-so-smart things, too. One of the good things he did was actually a confrontation with the Pharaoh. What happened there?
Mark uses an illustration to explain his point on this devotion. It’s too funny not to include in the radio versions, though, so enjoy!
Does God ever get tired of holding you? HINT: Nope!
Mark says this in tomorrow’s segment: “Don’t slum through life. Dwell with God…If God is your dwelling place, He is there forever. Will you stay there in His arms or are you going to wander like Moses?”

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Another surprise: Mark has already started another devotional book! Will he ever stop? Probably not! Listen as he gives a brief explanation…
In Matthew 5:17, Jesus said: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Why did he feel the need to point this out to the crowd during his Sermon on the Mount?
Did Moses mention Jesus? Mark looks at John 1:45 as a reference. But, wait! Why does he mention a verse in the New Testament if he’s talking about Moses in the Old Testament?
What is hearsay? Are there exceptions to the hearsay rule? Mark shares a story about law school and evidence… Tune in tomorrow for more on this and how it all connects to the Law (Torah).

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Torah Devotion: You Want It. You Take It. You Pay the Price.
Why is obedience demanded from God?
But – if He gave us a choice and if He offers grace, why do we have to be obedient?
Mark quotes Paul from Galatians…
Torah Devotion: Rex Lex or Lex Rex: Deuteronomy 17:18-20
Is the King above the law?
What is the Magna Carta?
Should we treat everyone with the same love God gives us?
Torah Devotion: Someone is Coming: Deuteronomy 18:15

David fought a HUGE giant, Goliath. Do you have giants in your life?
Was David supposed to be at the battle site? Wasn’t his job to watch the sheep?

Continuation of Torah Devotion: What Does God Require of You: Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Were the people confused about who God is? Remember, they were accustomed to “little gods” who were just like them, only “super-sized”.
Mark takes a short biology break to explain our DNA and PPAR: peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors. This is interesting stuff, y’all! Listen closely!

Did the people believe that “Big God” was the same as the “little gods”?
Were the Israelites instructed to destroy all the false gods? Did they?
What are “Asherim Poles”? Do you have one in your life?
Do you treat God like a magic pill? Mark Lanier: “If you don’t destroy for the false gods, they will destroy you. You have to cut them out.”

Mark starts the lesson this week with Psalm 119:97 “Oh how I love your law (Torah). It is my meditation all the day.” Aren’t verses from the Psalm meant to be songs and poems? Why does this verse mention the law?
Why did God give us the law? Mark offers three (3) good reasons…
Next Scripture reference: Psalm 119:92 “The law (Torah) of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver.” There’s another verse about the law in the Psalms! Again, why?

Why is Mark Lanier writing a devotional book about the Torah – the laws of Moses?
Review:
What is the TaNaKh?
Torah: The Law – Genesis through Deuteronomy
Nevi’im: The Prophets – Joshua through Malachi
Khetuvin: The Writings – Psalms through Chronicles
Why do many Jews read through the Torah every year? Why is Mark structuring his devotional book in the same way?

Do you get bored reading the Bible – especially Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy? What did Paul say? Mark quotes 2 Timothy 3:16-17. ALL Scripture is breathed out by God – even the Old Testament!
In this segment today, Mark also reviews what the Torah, Nevi’i, and Khetuvim are.
Does God keep His promises? You bet he does! Tune in tomorrow as Mark offers a look at Deuteronomy 1:8.

Click

Part 1 - Day 4
Mark Lanier is writing another devotional! Yay! This new book will be a daily devotional guide based on the Torah. For the next several weeks, Mark will be offering a glimpse into some of those writings.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Is God “just a supersized human”?
What does “zchr” mean? Does it have anything to do with the name “Zechariah”? How do the Hebrew and English translations differ? Listen as Mark tells a story about an author/professor who wrote on this topic and how Mark was able to locate him. It’s a funny story!
Next Torah Devotional: Exodus 35:21 “And everyone who was willing and whose heart moved them came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the tent of meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments.”
Mark reminds us that our lives are not our own. Our finances are not our own. We don’t sing “I Surrender a Tenth” (Mark actually sings this! Listen in!) We must give God everything if we expect to receive the benefits.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Was Jesus mentioned in the Old Testament? You bet! How often? A lot! When was Jesus first mentioned?
Does your life have the form of melting jello? In Genesis 1, God formed the earth, then He filled it. Will you allow God to fill your life this year?
I love the quote from Mark about why the Bible was written. Mark says, “The Bible was not written about other people. It was written about them and YOU.”
The next passage Mark discusses is Genesis 7:24-8:1. Tune in tomorrow as he continues to explain why this passage is often misquoted and why skeptics use these verses to say God is “just a supersized human”.

Questions/Issues Discussed:
Mark continues to discuss how the Psalms is important to the Torah using Psalm 119:97 “Oh how I love your law (Torah). It is my meditation all day long.” He also references 119:19.
The Torah reading plan is called a “Parashah” and is divided into 52 sections, one for each week of they year.
How are each of the sections in the Torah reading plan titled? Listen as Mark explains why he wants to stay within the same Jewish guidelines.
What did Jesus meditate on? He didn’t have the Bible to read, that’s for sure!
Over the next few days, Mark offers a preview of his forthcoming Torah devotional book… Tune in tomorrow as he continues to discuss Genesis 1:2.

What is the Torah?
What does Tanakh mean? Listen as Mark explains that the word is actually comprised of three other Hebrew words:
T – Torah (LAWS Genesis through Deuteronomy)
N – Nevi’i (PROPHETS Joshua through Malachi)
K – Khetuvim (WRITINGS Psalms through Chronicles)
What are the laws of the Bible? Are they simply the 10 Commandments?
