Day 5

Merry Christmas!! Listen each day this week as Mark Lanier offers the history behind some of the most beloved Christmas carols.

Note: The talented singers that help Mark out with the carols are Clark Robison, Bill Drout, and Pastor Brent Johnson.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The fourth carol that Mark looks at is one of the lesser-known carols: “Good King Wenceslas”. What is this song?!?! It’s an old Latin medieval song about a king or duke on Boxing Day, December 26 from the 1200’s. The song is titled: “Tempus adest floridum”.

Listen as Mark tells a hilarious story from the “Oxford Book of Carols” about : “Good King Wenceslas”.

The final carol is the most famous carol of all time: “Joy to the World”, from Psalm 98. Isaac Watts, the author this carol, did not intend the song to be sung at Christmastime! It’s actually about the second coming of Jesus! You learn something new every day, especially on the What’s UP Radio Program from Mark Lanier’s Biblical Literacy lessons!

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” was originally written in Latin in the 1100’s! We use the tune from the 1400’s and the version translated into English in the 1860’s! WOW!

There is some other very interesting information Mark shares about this hymn… Listen closely!

The third Christmas carol Mark discusses is “We Three Kings”. The author of this carol intended the first and fifth verses to be sung by a choir, while the middle three verses should be sung by three different men. (Mark discusses this in tomorrow’s segment, so tune!!!) Mark uses Isaiah 60 and Genesis 26 to explain this carol.
