Title: Old Testament Road to Jesus
Topic: Old Testament Road to Jesus
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Day 5

Jesus was never a Plan B. Jesus was contemplated before the creation of the world, so said Paul in Ephesians. So it is not surprising that the Old Testament is full of images and prophecies of Jesus.

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus” with a look at Isaiah and King Uzziah.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Another passage that connects Isaiah Chapters 6 and 53 together is actually found in the New Testament: John 12:36-43.

Mark plays a song by Keith Green “Oh Lord You’re Beautiful” about these passages…

Points for Home:
1. Don’t grow proud. Glorify the Lord in all things.
2. Rely on God for your strength.
3. Speak the Gospel regularly – not only to others, but to yourself, too!

Day 4

Jesus was never a Plan B. Jesus was contemplated before the creation of the world, so said Paul in Ephesians. So it is not surprising that the Old Testament is full of images and prophecies of Jesus.

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus” with a look at Isaiah and King Uzziah.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How are King Uzziah and Isaiah connected? Mark reads from Isaiah 6, where God commanded Isaiah to do something very specific.

How did Isaiah respond to being in the presence of YHWH? Did he have any right to be in the presence of God? Did he have any right to be His messenger?

Why did an angel come to Isaiah? What did the angel say to him?

Mark reads from Isaiah 53. This is a beautiful, beautiful passage written by Isaiah about the coming of Jesus. It’s full of grief, hope, love, and salvation.

Day 3

Jesus was never a Plan B. Jesus was contemplated before the creation of the world, so said Paul in Ephesians. So it is not surprising that the Old Testament is full of images and prophecies of Jesus.

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus” with a look at Isaiah and King Uzziah.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Who is Yosef ben Matityahu? You may know him better as Josephus! He was not only a general, but also an amazing Jewish historian and writer. He offers an even more detailed version of King Uzziah’s life than either 2 Kings or 2 Chronicles. For example, Josephus mentions a giant earthquake when King Uzziah was struck with leprosy!

So, how are King Uzziah and Isaiah connected? Mark reads from Isaiah 6, where God commanded Isaiah to do something very specific.

Side note: Why is “holy” mentioned three times in verse 3?

Day 2

Jesus was never a Plan B. Jesus was contemplated before the creation of the world, so said Paul in Ephesians. So it is not surprising that the Old Testament is full of images and prophecies of Jesus.

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus” with a look at Isaiah and King Uzziah.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

In 2 Chronicles 26:6-16, we learn about all the accomplishments of King Uzziah, whose name means “YHWH is my strength”. Why was his strength his ultimate downfall?

King Uzziah is also known as King Azariah, which means “YHWH is my help”. This was also true! So why did God strike him with leprosy?

In 2 Chronicles 26:7-23, the writer tells more of the story. Listen as Mark explains why King Uzziah got in trouble for burning incense in the temple.

Who is Yosef ben Matityahu? More on this tomorrow!

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus” with a look at Isaiah and King Uzziah.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Was King Uzziah a good or bad king – or a combination of both? What does his name mean? What was his alternate name? What does that name mean?

King Uzziah’s dad was King Amaziah. Was he good or bad? Did he allow his pride to overtake him? What happened?

Uzziah’s mentor was Zachariah, which was a good thing! Mark reads from 2 Kings 15, which gives a brief description about the reign and life of King Uzziah. How long was his reign? Why did God cause King Uzziah to have leprosy?

2 Chronicles 26 offers more detailed information about King Uzziah’s life. Tune in tomorrow for more about his accomplishments and ultimate demise.

Why didn’t God want Moses to make more than one Tabernacle? When the Tabernacle was gone, why was there only one Temple? Why isn’t this true today?

Did God have specific requests for the Tabernacle’s furnishings as well? In Exodus 25:10-16 we find the instructions for the Ark of the Covenant.

Day 2

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus”, focusing on the books of Hebrews and Exodus, the Tabernacle, and the Ark of the Covenant.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Was the Tabernacle considered God’s dwelling place among the people? Why were His instructions concerning the construction so specific? Did God tell Moses who would be able to help him with the construction?

Exodus 40:35-36 What happened after the Tabernacle was built? Could the people see the glory of the Lord in the Tabernacle? What was the purpose of the cloud in and around the Tabernacle?

Listen as Mark offers a short Greek lesson on the word “tent” or Tabernacle…

Was the Tabernacle where God met with His people? Is this where the people would also follow God?

Mark moves to the New Testament to John 1:14, focusing on the word “dwelt” in this verse: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” It’s interesting that “tent” and “dwelt” have similar Greek spellings and meanings…

Day 5

Mark Lanier continues his series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus”, this week with a look at the book of Ruth, which is a fabulous love story.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How does the story of Ruth communicate the life of Jesus? Mark offers three examples, also including his “Points for Home” as he reveals each one. (For example #1, listen to Thursday’s segment!)

Example #2:
God’s Provident Hand – God provided everything Ruth needed, through hunger, sorrow, and joy. God is always in control, even when our lives seem to be spinning out of control.

Point for Home #2:
Micah 5:2 “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Example #3:
Boaz the Redeemer – Boaz was a man of strength. He was generous and kind, protecting Ruth and her family. Jesus is the ultimate Redeemer. Jesus is the ultimate Protector.

Point for Home #3:
1 Corinthians 1:30 “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.

How does the story of Ruth communicate the life of Jesus? Mark offers three examples, also including his “Points for Home” as he reveals each one.

Example #1:
The Love Story – a story about life and death, then life again. Just like the story of Jesus, right?
Point for Home #1: 1 John 3:16 “By this we know love: That he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

Example #2:

Day 1

What is the difference between a good and a bad shepherd? Why is God called the Good Shepherd? Mark Lanier began a series, “The Long and Winding Road: The Old Testament Road to Jesus”, back in October 2017. Over the next few weeks, he will conclude that series.

This week, Mark looks at several Scriptures to describe Jesus as the Good Shepherd, such as: John 10:15, Numbers 27:16-17, John 7:12, Isaiah 40:1-11, and Psalm 23.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark Lanier begins the lesson this week with a look at John 10:15. Why did Jesus refer to himself as the “Good Shepherd”?

What does Mark mean by “old soil” mean?

Why is it so hard to herd sheep? Listen as Mark tells a funny story of the time he, his wife Becky, and several others attempted to herd his sheep from one area to another. Yes, Mark has sheep. I bet you didn’t know that!

FUN FACT: Did you now that one of the earliest activities mentioned in the Bible was herding sheep?

Key Old Testament Scripture for Jesus as the Good Shepherd #1: Ezekiel 34:1-16
What does a bad shepherd do with the sheep?
What does a good shepherd do with the sheep?
Mark will continue with this scripture tomorrow, so make plans to tune in!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Was God already in existence from the beginning? Mark says that Genesis 1:1 is the key to understanding God, Jesus, the Bible, and everything in between.

Listen as Mark describes in detail why God created each aspect of the Earth. It was “without form” and He “filled that void”. NOTE: Mark uses a great PowerPoint presentation to illustrate this. You can find the link at the bottom of this description…

Part 5

Mark Lanier couldn’t fit all the information about Father Abraham in last week’s lesson, so get ready for Round 2! This week’s focus is on the three men (aka God) who came to visit Abraham and Sarah before their son Isaac was born.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why is the word “see” (or a variation of the word) used over and over again in Genesis 22?

Furthermore, why does this passage also say “Abraham says” or “God says” repeatedly?

Was God being “mean” to Abraham and Sarah? Or, is this proof of God’s love?

Points for Home:

Mark Lanier couldn’t fit all the information about Father Abraham in last week’s lesson, so get ready for Round 2! This week’s focus is on the three men (aka God) who came to visit Abraham and Sarah before their son Isaac was born.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Did Abraham and Sarah fully trust God’s promise of a child? Were they able to fool God? HINT: Nope to both questions.

Abraham finally trusted God on the third day. Why is this day significant?

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: In Genesis 22:2, God said to Abraham, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” These words are echoed in John 3:16 about Jesus.

Why did God provide a lamb as a sacrifice in place of Isaac? Mark explains here that lambs were not generally used as sacrifices. Children were rarely used. Most of the time, goats, female sheep, pigeons, or doves were used as sacrifices.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why did Sarah laugh at God’s promise of children? Mark makes some funny jokes here; you don’t want to miss it!

Mark refers to the birth of Isaac as the second most important birth of all time. The first of course being the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ. After all, without the birth of Isaac, the birth of Jesus would never have occurred.

Fast-forward to Genesis 22. This is the story of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, to save the people. Mark calls this a “blue print of Jesus”. The stories are extremely similar.

Where did God tell Abraham to take Isaac? Why is this place significant?

Tomorrow, Mark will discuss other aspects of the story, such as: Abraham and Sarah’s deceit before God, the significance of the “third day” in both stories, and were children ever offered as sacrifices.

Mark Lanier couldn’t fit all the information about Father Abraham in last week’s lesson, so get ready for Round 2! This week’s focus is on the three men (aka God) who came to visit Abraham and Sarah before their son Isaac was born.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark begins the lesson in the Gospel of John, Chapter 8 beginning in verse 48. Jesus, at this point, is trying to explain to the Jews something about Abraham and the devil that they just don’t understand.

Listen as Mark reads from the passage, focusing on the word “see” in verse 56. He will continue this explanation throughout the week, as well as detailing Abraham and Sarah’s lack of faith concerning God’s promise of offspring.

Part 4

Mark Lanier is continuing his new series “The Old Testament Road to Jesus” this week with a look at Abraham, with some references to Moses in the mix.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How does Jesus connect Moses and Abraham? It all comes back to the burning bush. Moses was very confused. He wanted confirmation that God was who He claimed to be. He knew the people would not believe him. After all, they had over 100 gods! Which ones was calling his name from a burning bush?

Mark uses an excellent visual presentation during this segment. He even has pictures of two real scrolls! Click on the link below to view the video for this lesson to view the PowerPoint slide.

Why wouldn’t Jews write name of God? Do Orthodox Jews still refuse to write his name?

Mark finally gets into the story of Abraham near the end of this third segment. But first – a little lineage review…

Part 3

Mark Lanier is continuing his new series “The Old Testament Road to Jesus” this week with a look at Abraham, with some references to Moses in the mix.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Abraham appears in Genesis 11, but Mark first looks at John 8, beginning in verse 31, when Jesus was speaking to some struggling Jews who were challenging Jesus. They actually accused him of lying about their past enslavement! They argued with Jesus about their “true father”, Abraham and even asked Jesus if he was a demon!

Listen as Mark reveals the great response Jesus gave these Jews. But, did it work? Did they still want to stone him? They called him a Samaritan, which was an ugly, ugly insult, so obviously they weren’t listening very closely!

How does Jesus connect Moses and Abraham? It all comes back to the burning bush. Mark will continue to discuss this tomorrow, so tune in.

Part 2

Mark Lanier is continuing his new series “The Old Testament Road to Jesus” this week with a look at Abraham, with some references to Moses in the mix.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Is the Old Testament just “fluff” or are there specific and significant pieces of information that pave the way toward Jesus, the Messiah?

What are the scrolls? Why are they called the “Books of Moses” if Moses didn’t appear until Exodus and died at the end of Deuteronomy?

Listen as Mark offers some great information about the scrolls, their origin, and their purpose.

Abraham appears in Genesis 11, but Mark first looks at John 8, beginning in verse 31, when Jesus was speaking to some struggling Jews. Tune in tomorrow for more explanation…

Title: The Flood
Topic: Old Testament Road to Jesus
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Part 5

Mark Lanier is continuing his new series “The Old Testament Road to Jesus” this week with a look at Noah and The Flood. This story, of course, is found in Genesis Chapters 6-8 and a little in Chapter 9. The Key to Understanding The Flood: God brings judgment on sin, but also saved His remnant that seek and serve Him.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Today, Mark Lanier concludes his lesson on The Old Testament Road to Jesus: The Flood. The final Biblical Interpretation of The Flood is simple and straight-forward: Jesus is the Ark of Redemption. Listen as Mark reads from 1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.”

Final Thoughts:
God judges sin
Sin doesn’t self-improve
God’s redemption is because of His covenant loyalty

Next week: Father Abraham!

Part 4

Mark Lanier is continuing his new series “The Old Testament Road to Jesus” this week with a look at Noah and The Flood. This story, of course, is found in Genesis Chapters 6-8 and a little in Chapter 9. The Key to Understanding The Flood: God brings judgment on sin, but also saved His remnant that seek and serve Him.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The story of Noah is a story of God’s salvation of His people – a Messianic story. It is yet another story that shows how God used His people to spread the Truth and purpose we have on this earth.

In this segment, Mark uses several Scripture passages from the New Testament, in addition of Ezekiel 14, as further proof that the story of The Flood is true: Matthew 24 (The Mount of Olives), Hebrew 11:7, and 1 Peter 3:18.

Did Jesus know when the second coming was going to be? Why did Jesus reference The Flood (Matthew 24)? The third aspect of the Biblical Interpretation of The Flood is found here: God judgment is real.

The passage in Hebrews gives us the fourth aspect of the Biblical Interpretation of The Flood: Faith is the key to salvation from God’s judgment. Does this still apply to us today? You betchya!

This story, of course, is found in Genesis Chapters 6-8 and a little in Chapter 9. The Key to Understanding The Flood: God brings judgment on sin, but also saved His remnant that seek and serve Him.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The second aspect of the Biblical Interpretation of The Flood is “God brings judgment, but keeps His covenant promise of salvation.” Mark uses Isaiah 53 and 54 to illustrate this point…

In the above passage, we learn that the people are just plain wicked. Did God want to destroy the earth again? Would He have done so if He had not already promised Noah that He wouldn’t?

In this segment today, Mark plays an old song, “Sing O Barren One (Lamb)", based on Isaiah 54. The artist is a friend of Mark’s from Philadelphia, Joel Chernoff.

Part 2

Mark Lanier is continuing his new series “The Old Testament Road to Jesus” this week with a look at Noah and The Flood. This story, of course, is found in Genesis Chapters 6-8 and a little in Chapter 9. The Key to Understanding The Flood: God brings judgment on sin, but also saved His remnant that seek and serve Him.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark concludes his thoughts on the beginning of Genesis Chapter 6 and the beings mentioned.

THE FLOOD FACTS: What does Noah’s name mean? Why is this significant? Was Noah meant to save the earth from further destruction? Who shut the door to the Ark? What does the rainbow represent? Was Noah apprehensive about the task God gave him?

Mark has several aspects to the Biblical Interpretation of The Flood that he will be discussing this week. The first: God brings judgment, but also saved His remnant that seek and serve Him that can be turned around. Mark uses Moses in Exodus 2 to explain…

Why is the word “basket” significant to this passage? Note: It has something to do with the Ark!

Tune in tomorrow to hear the next aspect of the Biblical Interpretation of The Flood: God brings judgment, but keeps His covenant promise of salvation.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why was the Book of Hebrews written? Who was it written for? Does it “disguise” Jesus and his real purpose?

Was there really a universal flood? Does “all” really mean everything or “just a bunch”?

In Genesis 6, there are some strange “things” mentioned. Were there angels walking the earth who married men? Were they just really beautiful women? Do we know for sure? Listen as Mark discusses this. But, wait! This isn’t the point of the story. Tune in tomorrow for the twist!

Is there more than one God? Not “little gods”, but more than one “big God”? If there is only one God, why does Genesis 1:26 say “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…”?

Why did God rest on the seventh day? Was He just tired? Or was He finished?

How does Genesis 2 describe humanity?

Part 2

Mark Lanier is beginning a new series which will last through the end of the year: The Old Testament Road to Jesus. Starting in the book of Genesis, Mark will be discussing the various events which point to the truth about the prophet’s teachings on the coming of Jesus Christ.

Man is obviously different than animals in many ways. Listen as Mark not only explains “how”, but “why” using the original language of God: Hebrew.

Is there more than one God? Not “little gods”, but more than one “big God”? Yes, this is confusing, but Mark will discuss this is more in detail tomorrow. You don’t want to miss it!

Mark’s good friend, Phil Keaggy, has a great new song for us today! Enjoy the peaceful melody at the beginning of this segment before Mark dives into the lesson.

Many believe that the book of Hebrews was written by Paul. But was it really a sermon by Clement? Mark is not going to debate this, but does reference Hebrews 1:1 with his own translation.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Do stories we learn as children in Sunday School often give us the wrong picture about what really happened?

Does information get lost or mistaken when translated from language to language? How important is the “era” when studying Scripture?

In Scripture, we are told that we are made in God’s image, born with a sinful nature, and Jesus Christ is the answer for our atonement. However, there are so many different “types of Christian denominations”. How can one know what to believe? Dr. Longman has a two-part answer to this question, the second of which will be discussed in tomorrow’s segment.
