Title: Why I Am Not a Jew…Or Am I? Part 3
Topic: Why I Am Not a Jew…Or Am I?
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)

Part 5

Mark Lanier is back with another “Why I Am Not a Jew” lesson! Mark will be discussing more about the history and laws of Judaism this week.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How can a righteous God just overlook our sins? Well, He can’t. Someone must pay the penalty. That is why Jesus died. Jewish traditions, however, exist to atone for sins. Is this right? Was there ever a need for these traditions? Do we still need them?

Mark also discusses two Jewish traditions in today’s concluding segment in “Why I Am Not a Jew…Or Am I?” One is found in Zechariah 14:6, pertaining to light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” Why is this significant in regards to the Jewish faith? Listen as Mark explains how light was a luxury in Biblical times.

Many Jewish traditions involve some type of sacrifice (not the killing, blood everywhere type of sacrifice). Is this necessary still today? Isn’t this why Jesus came to Earth and died for our sins?

Part 4

Mark Lanier is back with another “Why I Am Not a Jew” lesson! Mark will be discussing more about the history and laws of Judaism this week.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark Lanier reminds us that “Jewish law was never intended to make anyone righteous before God, because no one can follow it perfectly.

Abraham’s promise didn’t come through the law; it came from faith. Abraham’s obedience came through faith in God, not faith in the law. How could a father be willing to kill his own son unless he fully trusted God and His plan? After all, this was not a normal request from a loving God.

Mark Lanier reveals why Mount Moriah is so significant as he retells the story of Abraham and Isaac. This is a story we have all heard many times, but Mark explains it in a new and fresh way as it pertains to Jewish law. Listen in!

Part 3

Mark Lanier is back with another “Why I Am Not a Jew” lesson! Mark will be discussing more about the history and laws of Judaism this week.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Jesus was very clear that he did not come to abolish the laws in Israel. He came to fulfill them! This was very confusing to the people, especially the Jews.

Mark Lanier will be looking at laws in the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Why did Adam and Eve sin? What happened after they sinned? What did God say to them in Genesis 3?

Abraham was extremely obedient, so much so that he was willing to do the unthinkable in submission to God. In Romans 4: 13, Paul says: “For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

Part 2

Mark Lanier is back with another “Why I Am Not a Jew” lesson! Mark will be discussing more about the history and laws of Judaism this week.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Today, Mark Lanier focuses on Genesis 12:1-3 1Now the Lord said to Abram, 'Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.'”

These are very important verses for several reasons. Listen as Mark gives an English lesson on the word “Christianity”. What does each part of the word actually mean and how is it broken down from Greek and Hebrew?

So, how do these verses and the meaning of Christianity tie into Judaism?  Mark uses Paul’s letter to the Romans as an example.

Finally, Mark looks at some of the roots of Judaism and how they compare to Christianity.

Part 1

Mark Lanier is back with another “Why I Am Not a Jew” lesson!  Mark will be discussing more about the history and laws of Judaism this week.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why are you a Christian? Because your parents are? Because of an experience as a child? Are we right or wrong in our belief of Christianity?

Mark discusses his favorite authors, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, during this segment. Their individual journeys to Christianity were both unique.

So, why are some people Jewish? Are some “more Jewish” than others? Are we all a little bit Jewish? Mark also quickly reviews the “Thirteen Principles of Faith”. NOTE: Listen to the last lesson on “Why I Am Not a Jew, Part 2” for more on this.

What is the difference between the old and new Jewish faith?

Part 4

Mark Lanier will be completing his series “Why I Am Not” over the next few weeks with a lesson on the Jewish faith.  Aren’t we all Jewish? What exactly do Jews believe? How does the Jewish faith differ from other Christian beliefs?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Principle Six: There is absolute prophecy.

Principle Seven: Moses is the Father of all Prophets…However, as Christians, there’s another “layer” to this. Listen as Mark explains using Scripture from Deuteronomy and John.

Principle Eight: The Torah is from Heaven. Yes!

Principle Nine: Also mentions the Torah. Listen as Mark explains the difference, however, between the Jewish belief and the Christian belief about Jesus as found in the Torah and the Bible.

Principle Ten: God is aware of our sins and does not turn away from us. This is the whole reason Jesus died for us!

Principle Eleven: God gives reward to those who follow His commandments and punishes those who do not. Romans 2:6-8 is a perfect example…

Day 3

This week, Mark Lanier is continuing his presentation on “Why I Am Not a Jew…Or Am I?  Last week, we learned the first three of Moses Maimonides “Thirteen Principles of Faith”. This week, Mark will reveal the remaining ten principles, and he will discuss other comparisons of the Jewish and Christian faiths.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

The first four “Thirteen Principles of Faith” by Moses Maimonides are: belief in a Creator, God is one, God is Spirit (not flesh), and God is absolute and existed before time.

Principle Five: God alone is worthy and praise. Luke 4:8. Jesus himself was tempted by Satan. What was his response?

Mark Lanier will be completing his series “Why I Am Not” over the next few weeks with a lesson on the Jewish faith. Aren’t we all Jewish? What exactly do Jews believe? How does the Jewish faith differ from other Christian beliefs?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Today, a good portion of Jews consider themselves “Conservative”. Listen as Mark reveals other statistics of those who consider themselves Jewish compared to 2,000 years ago. He also briefly touches on how the Jews have been persecuted over the years, even by “so-called” Christians!

Mark reviews the first two “Thirteen Principles of Faith” by Moses Maimonides: belief in a Creator and God is one. Do ALL Christians believe God is one and the Creator of the universe?

This week, Mark Lanier is continuing his presentation on “Why I Am Not a Jew…Or Am I?”  Last week, we learned the first three of Moses Maimonides “Thirteen Principles of Faith”. This week, Mark will reveal the remaining ten principles, and he will discuss other comparisons of the Jewish and Christian faiths.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark begins the lesson by telling a “lawyer story”. He tried a case some years back against a drug company whose arthritis medication was causing heart problems. His job was to prove that the drug company did not adequately warn of the dangers. What does this have to do with the lesson this week? Listen in!

Defining what a Jew is makes a drastic difference in how you view the Jewish faith compared to the Christian faith. The various “categories” of Jews are just as different as the various “categories” of Christians. Mark will talk in more depth about the “Thirteen Principles of Faith” by Moses Maimonides tomorrow, so tune in!

Mark continues with the first few “Thirteen Principles of Faith” from Maimonides.

In Colossians 1:15-17, we see that God is all things; He was before all things and He will exist after all things. God created all things and He holds all things together. This is the first principle from Maimonides.

The second principle which Moses Maimonides wrote of is this: God is one: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Jews believe this, just as Christians do. Mark cites several Scripture passages which confirm this as well. .

Maimonides also wrote of the Holy Spirit, which is the third principle. God is not flesh. He does not get tired. He does not “walk around” or do human activities. God uses language that we, as humans, can understand. Jesus even told people that we do not worship a “man”; we worship the Holy Spirit.

Mark will have more on “Why I Am Not a Jew” next week and will also continue with the rest of Moses Maimonides’ “Thirteen Principles of Faith”.

Mark Lanier continues to give an account of how the Israelites gained their freedom. He also explains how easy it is for “fake Israel news” to drown the internet. Consider Wikipedia…

What do scholars say about Israel and the history of the Jews? Are many wrong in their assertions? Again, consider Wikipedia…

Over the past two days, Mark has discussed three categories of Jews: kosher and non-kosher, genetic, and cultural Jews. The fourth is a religious Jew. What does it mean to be a “religious Jew”? How are religious Jews different than the others?

Do some Jews also identify as “other”?

When and how did the Pharisees make an appearance in the Bible? Tune in tomorrow to hear more!

Yesterday, Mark Lanier began looking into the history of genetic Jews. He believes that certain words are very important to understanding the Jewish faith and why there are different religious practices within it. Some are kosher; some are not. Some believe in genetics; some are cultural. Listen in as Mark completes his explanation concerning genetic Jews using Abraham and Sarah and their offspring’s story.

Why do so many people believe that Israel does not have the right to their own land? Why is there a movement to establish the “Palestinian State”? Why are the Jews hated by some?

Mark will be looking at specific words pertaining to the Jewish faith compared to what they “really mean”. First, though, he shares a personal story of a lunch he was honored to attend with the late Justice Scalia. The conversation turned into an argument! Uh-oh! What happened?

What famous people are Jewish?

What does it mean to be Jewish? There are Kosher and non-Kosher Jews. There are genetic Jews.

Tune in tomorrow as Mark discusses the history behind genetic Jews.
