Title: Psalms for Living
Topic: Psalms for Living
Discussed by Terry Lowry
with Host of the What's UP Radio Program

Today’s Psalms for Living is taken from Psalm 131   1O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. 2But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. 3O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.”

Do you remember the singer/song writer John Michael Talbot? Mark does! He recalls a song  from three decades ago based on this Psalm. Both the song and the Psalm have the same message: be humble and contemplative. They also have a third aspect in common: they affirm faith.

In many passages of Scripture, we are advised to be humble, not proud or boasting, in our faith. Mark reminds us how important quiet time is in our daily walk with the Lord in today’s devotion. Listen as Terry reads more…

Title: Psalms for Living: Psalm 18:20-21;23-24
Topic: Psalms for Living
Discussed by Terry Lowry
with Host of the What's UP Radio Program

Today’s Psalms for Living devotion is from Psalms 18:20-21;23-24

Mark admits that he struggles with this passage, and similar ones in the Bible. Not with the concept so much as the language. Verse 24 says (paraphrased) “The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness.” If He did this, I would receive nothing! I must remember that my righteousness is not based on my own deeds, but rather on His purity and obedience.

Part 1 Day 5

The lesson from Mark Lanier this week is from September 4, 2016, “Psalms for Living: Part 1.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Who holds your awe? Who would make you speechless if they walked into a room? Would it be a famous actor or singer? Would it be Jesus?

Here’s another question: Do you treat people who are wealthy, good-looking, or educated differently than you treat the poor, not-so-good-looking, and uneducated? Ouch. Chew on that for a minute…

Mark’s Final Thoughts:
1. Godspell – plus a song!
2. Pray – love – follow
3. Righteousness requires consequences
4. Jesus is the answer. Always.

Mark closes the lesson with Psalms 68:18 “When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious – that you, Lord God, might dwell there.” He also references Ephesians 4:8-14. Listen in as he compares the two passages.

Part 1 Day 4

The lesson from Mark Lanier this week is from September 4, 2016, “Psalms for Living: Part 1.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

God is a just God.

He judges His people accordingly.

He is still the same God who created the universe.

Today, Mark uses the Psalms to remind us that, as Christians, we can rest in His promise and in His righteousness – not from our own works, but because of the blood of Jesus.

Part 1 Day 3

The lesson from Mark Lanier this week is from September 4, 2016, “Psalms for Living: Part 1.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How do you maintain a joyful spirit through pain and suffering? Mark says, “When we are in those times of travail and languishing, we can be confident as we seek God and ask God to heal us that He will do so. We see in the death of Jesus, ultimate healing.”

The next Psalm…The Lord Sits Enthroned Forever. Mark finds this Psalm intriguing, scary, humbling, and encouraging. Listen in as he explains why.

Part 1 Day 2

The lesson from Mark Lanier this week is from September 4, 2016, “Psalms for Living: Part 1.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why should we ask God to be gracious to us, especially when we are in emotional pain?

Joy and Happiness are synonyms, but they are not identical. According to Webster, joy is defined as “a source or cause of keen pleasure or delight; something or someone greatly valued or appreciated”. Happiness means “good fortune, pleasure, or contentment”. Yes, they do have similar meanings, but a person can be joyful even in the midst of sorrow. Listen in as Mark uses a passage from Numbers to explain what he believes the Psalmist is trying to convey about joy.

Additional Scripture Passage: Psalm 6:2-3

with Host of the What's UP Radio Program

Today’s Psalms for Living is taken from Psalm 130:3-4   3If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.”

Mark writes in today’s devotion of one thing he needs every day. No, it isn’t coffee. It is forgiveness.

As we age, our sins change. The same was true for the Jews after the death of Jesus. In Acts Chapter 2, Peter spoke a powerful sermon. The people were terrified of what they had done to the Son of God! But there was hope in forgiveness – and there still is! Listen as Terry reads more from today’s devotion.

Today’s Psalms for Living is taken from Psalm 25:1-3  “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 2O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. 3Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame .”

These verses seem simple enough, but there is a deeper meaning behind them. Mark believes that we must view this Psalm with a “time perspective”. To see the real truth, we must look at the larger picture.

The Psalmist is finally realizing that living for yourself does no good. Living and trusting in God is the best and only way. Disappointment and heartache will always be present in this world. Aren’t you glad Heaven will be perfect?

Day 5

Jesus knew what he was up against. He knew the odds. Yet, he still chose to die in our place so we might have eternal life. How amazing is that?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Everyone will have at least one crisis in their life – some may have several or even many. The question is: Who is your rock and fortress? You? Others? Or God? Where do you turn when times are rough?

Do you “always” boast in the Lord? Really? Always? It’s hard! But it can be done. Listen in as Mark offers several more Scriptures to encourage you today. Tune in next week as Mark is back in his “Why I Am Not…” series with Part 2 on the Muslim faith.

Day 4

Mark continues his emphasis on the word “Lord” in Psalm 29.

Note: This lesson was recorded before the November 8 Election. We did not delete Mark’s comments about the election because they apply to everyone every day.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How do you hear God’s voice? Does He still speak to His people today?

What brings you down? What brings you back up?

Mark compares God’s Kingdom to a Sudoku puzzle. There are tons of different parts, but they must be put together properly or it will not work. “Free will” makes this especially difficult.

Do you really follow Jesus faithfully, with no worry or fear?

Day 3

Mark concludes his look at Psalm 29:1-2 today. We are not here to simply exist. We are not here to look to other gods. We are here to worship God and God alone.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Throughout Psalm 29, the word “Lord” is used over and over again – eighteen times, to be exact (NIV). This is obviously significant, as Mark explains, especially considering there are so many different words used for “Lord”.

Why is it also important that “gods” are lower case and God is not? The same can be questioned about “lord” and Lord.

Why do we worship God anyway? Why does He deserve our praise?

Within this same Psalm, we are shown just how powerful and majestic God really is. Listen in as Mark passionately discusses this.

Day 2

Yesterday, we ended Mark’s segment with how we are to be the salt and light of the earth. But what happens when the salt has lost its saltiness?

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark explains that someone who has no salt is comparable to a fool. They have no respect for God and His handiwork.

Why is it so important for Christians to act differently than the world? Mark uses Psalm 28:6-7. Listen in as he breaks the words in these verses down one by one.

We all know that we should fully trust in the Lord and not worry about the future. When, where, and how do you find the strength of the Lord?

Mark also begins to look at Psalm 29:1-2 in this segment, but will continue tomorrow, so tune in.

Tune back next week to hear Part Two of “Why I Am Not a Muslim”.

Note: Due to the last minute changes, there is not a handout available online this week.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Ken and Alice Starr were guests in Mark’s class last week. Ken is the former President and Chancellor of Baylor University. Listen as Mark gives him high praise.

First Devotional – Psalm 28: 3 and 5 There is truth to the saying “You become like the people you hang around.”

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Do you really treat everyone you meet equally? Really? You treat them all EXACTLY the same way? It’s hard to behave in the same manner with the homeless man at your car window as you would with the Pastor sitting at your kitchen table. Listen as Mark offers some words of wisdom.

How are Ephesians 4:8-14 and Psalm 68:18 similar?

Righteousness requires consequences. What does Mark mean by this statement?

God is a just God. He judges His people accordingly. He is still the same God who created the universe. As Christians, we can rest in His promise and in His righteousness – not from our own works, but because of the blood of Jesus.

Throughout the Bible, God used different people to reveal how the end would be played out. Did they understand what would happen? Of course not! Did they obey His commands and tell others anyway? Yep! And thank goodness they did!

This is how Mark breaks down the Psalms passage today:

Wicked people = people who forget God
Needy = not forgotten, poor people

Mark Lanier states, “Too many people think that faith exists in one dimension of life and science exists in another.” Do they really have separate places in the world? Or are they one in the same? Mark says, “That’s bogus. And it’s not Biblical.”

Mark is so smart that he thought to include a “Leap Year Day” in his new devotion book, which can be used from year to year. Why? So you can have strength to “leap ahead”. Haha

God is consistent. His rules are not going to change. He will be the same yesterday, today, and forever. Aren’t you glad for that?

In Psalm 107:4-16, the Psalmist is revealing something deeply personal. Paul even writes his own version of this Psalm in Romans 8. Listen as Mark discusses rebellion and the effects it has on us.

God does not work on our time. He works on His time. And thank God for that!

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Why do you worry? We know we shouldn’t, but it is still hard not to. Listen in as Mark gives encouragement to us all regarding this issue.

Hebrew poetry is very specific. Psalm 25: 8-9 is no exception. “Good and upright is the Lord. Therefore, he instructs sinners in His ways. He leads the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.”

“Remember” is a word used over and over again in the Bible. Why? What does it really mean?

Day 2

Some fears are unfounded and some fears are genuine. We all have burdens. Probably the biggest fear is the fear of the unknown – for Christians and non-Christians alike.

Note: We will conclude Mark’s lesson this week on Wednesday so we can bless you with Christmas music on Thursday and Friday as you gather with family and friends in a time of Thanksgiving and remembrance.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

How does Donald Trump play a role in today’s lesson? Listen in!!

Psalm 27:4 “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord, and to seek him in his temple.”

Does the above Psalm mean you must always be in church? Must you always be around Christians?

One of the hardest aspects of life to master is “patience”. No one likes to wait. Why is patience so important in the Christian walk?

Mark is leading his 800+ member class into a deeper understanding of God’s Word.  Join him next Sunday at Champion Forest Baptist Church in NW Houston.

Day 1

Mark Lanier is taking another break from his “Why I Am Not…” Series to bring some more “Psalms for Living”. Next week, Mark will be teaching on “Why I Am Not a Mormon”.

Note: We will conclude Mark’s lesson this week on Wednesday so we can bless you with Christmas music on Thursday and Friday as you gather with family and friends in a time of Thanksgiving and remembrance.

Questions/Issues Discussed:

Mark shares a brief testimonial to his good friend and sound engineer for his class, Mike Hudgins, who passed away suddenly from a heart attack this past week. Listen as he shares his hope and assurance that Mike is now rejoicing in Heaven with Jesus.

What is the “The Law of the Lord”? The first Scripture Mark looks at today is Psalm 19:7 “The Law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing my soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making the wise simple.

Mark also looks at Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my Light and Salvation – whom shall I fear?” Listen in as he tells a story about vampires from his childhood when they lived in Memphis, Tennessee. Yes, vampires and Psalms have a connection. Listen in!

Reminder: Mark will be giving each class member a free copy of his new book, “Psalms for Living” on Sunday, December 11. If you would like a copy, make plans to attend!

Day 1

I know we promised that Michael Card would be teaching the lesson for Mark this week, but unfortunately Mark forgot to tell Michael’s “people” this. So, Michael is not here, and Mark will be teaching a second lesson of “Psalms for Living”, which will be part of his new book coming out in December.

Mark also discusses some of Pastor David Fleming’s sermon from last week, which was on Matthew 5:13.

Day 5

Who holds your awe? Who would make you speechless if they walked into a room? Would it be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton? Would it be a famous actor or singer? Would it be Jesus?

Here’s another question: Do you treat people who are wealthy, good-looking, or educated differently than you treat the poor, not-so-good-looking, and uneducated? Ouch. Chew on that for a minute…

More from this final segment with Mark:

Next week Mark will be back with his fifth installment of “Why I am Not an Agnostic”. This lesson has some powerful information in it about suffering – you don’t want to miss it!

Day 4

God is a just God. He judges His people accordingly. He is still the same God who created the universe. As Christians, we can rest in His promise and in His righteousness – not from our own works, but because of the blood of Jesus.

Throughout the Bible, God used different people to reveal how the end would be played out. Did they understand what would happen? Of course not! Did they obey His commands and tell others anyway? Yep! And thank goodness they did!

This is how Mark breaks down the Psalms passage today:

Wicked people = people who forget God
Needy = not forgotten, poor people
If you forget the needy = you forget God

Day 3

We do not live in Utopia. We live in a battleground.

I’d venture to say that all of us have experienced deep sorrow and grief at least once in our lifetime. And we probably will again – and again and again. How do you maintain a joyful spirit through the pain? It is so easy to just give up and throw in the towel. But the Psalmist warns us not to do that under any circumstance.

Day 2

Mark took a break over Labor Day weekend from his “Why I am Not…” series. He felt that too many people would be on vacation and would miss a powerful lesson which focuses on suffering and the age-old question: “Why does God allow bad things to happen?” He will be back next week with that lesson, so tune in!

Quick English lesson: Joy and Happiness are synonyms but they are not identical.

The next passage Mark looks at is Psalm 6:2-3. Why should we ask God to be gracious to us, especially when we are in emotional pain?

Mark is leading his 800+ member class into a deeper understanding of God’s Word. Join him next Sunday at Champion Forest Baptist Church in NW Houston.

He felt that too many people would be on vacation and would miss a powerful lesson which focuses on suffering and the age-old question: “Why does God allow bad things to happen?” He will be back next week with that lesson, so tune in!

Today, Mark reveals a secret. He has written a devotional book on the Psalms! It will be available after December 15 of this year. How exciting! Stay tuned for more details.

What brings you joy? Family? Money? Sports? Popularity? Success? If you can discover what makes you happy, then you will know what you are living for. Mark’s lesson this week is entitled “Psalms for Living”. He first looks at Psalm 4:6-7 “Many, Lord, are asking, ‘Who will bring us prosperity?’ Let the light of your face shine on us. 7Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound.” Tune in tomorrow for more!
