Title: Why I Am Not an Atheist - Part 3
Topic: Why I Am Not an Atheist
Discussed by Mark Lanier
with Biblical Literacy (www.Biblical-Literacy.com)
Day 5
Today is the last installment of Mark’s three-part series on “Why I Am Not an Atheist.” Mr. Brain (I seriously love his name, even if he is an atheist) goes on to argue that since there are no other “gods” (like Zeus), then God must not exist, either. If God exists, then the others must, as well! This is almost too absurd to even comment on, but Mark does.
Mr. Brain admits that he has read the Bible. However, he doesn’t like the information within its pages, therefore God must not exist. Do you realize how ridiculous this is? Listen in as Mark quickly goes through several other arguments and studies which Mr. Brain and other atheists use.
Points for Home:
God exists because He has shown Himself to us.
God is Eternal, but that does not mean He will make the world perfect and without pain, disease, and suffering.
Tune in next week as Mark explains why he is not an Agnostic.

Day 4
How can you “study” prayer? As Christians, we realize that God answers every prayer – sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes it is no, and sometimes it is wait. This is a hard concept for atheists to understand. They think God’s answer should always be “yes” and there should be no pain or suffering in the world. How we wish that were true! But, it is not, and this is why we rely on God to see us through the difficult times. After all, if He wasn’t needed, He would be out of a job, right?
Today, Mark discusses more “studies” about prayer and their “outcomes”. He points out that in one particular study, Mr. Brain (remember him?) obviously never read the whole study! Listen in as Mark gives all the details.

Day 3
Mr. Brain (yes, this is a real person) doesn’t believe in prayer. Mr. Brain says prayer is a bunch of hog-wash. Mr. Brain says that if God is real, then every prayer to cure cancer would be answered. This is a valid point, but Mark Lanier has an excellent answer in response.
Atheists often pick and choose which Scriptures they quote – both for convenience and validity. However, they usually take the Scripture out of context, as is the case with prayer. God tells us through Scripture how we are to pray and what result we should expect. God has a specific reason why He doesn’t just cure all cancers. Listen in as Mark explains.
“Statistically Analyzed Prayer” is another argument which Mark has an issue with. He quotes more from Mr. Brain, who says “God never answers prayers” because there is “proof”! Mark actually says that this argument “chaps his lips” and makes him mad!
Tune in tomorrow as Mark reveals more “studies” about prayer.

Day 2
Yesterday, Mark Lanier referenced two websites with “proof” that God “doesn’t exist”. You can search our archives to hear that first segment of this series.
So many times, atheists simply say, “If you cannot prove that I am wrong, prove that you are right.” That’s the problem: atheists really don’t have any “proof” other than just simply shifting the burden of proof away from themselves.
Mark also discusses more about the first website he mentioned yesterday: God Is Imaginary – 50 Simple Proofs. He points out that the person who writes for this website (whose last name is Brain, by the way) is defining God as what he wants God to be. “We don’t define God,” Mark points out. “The God in the Bible is not our genie where we just rub the magic lamp, tell Him what to do, and He does it.”

Day 1
This is the third, and final, installment on “Why I am Not an Atheist” by Mark Lanier. You can click on the link below to watch the other lessons from Mark, or click on “Archives” above and search under “topic” for his lessons here.
This week, Mark will be looking at websites which claim that there is no God. It might be useful to have another device handy so you can look up the websites along with Mark.
If you Google “where is the proof there is no God” you will discover a lot – a lot – of links. The first website Mark mentions is:
God Is Imaginary 50 Simple Proofs.
Next, he looks at one that really caught his eye:
Finally Proof that there is no God! By News 24. He reads the entire article in this first segment today and will go into more detail about it tomorrow, so listen in.

Day 5
Mark Lanier recognizes that it is difficult for some people to trust, believe, and have faith in God. However, their argument against the existence of God just doesn’t make sense to him! Listen in as Mark explains.
BONUS: Mark spotted his good friend,
Dr. Frank Gannon, Baylor College of Medicine Pathologist, in the audience so, of course, he had to bring him up on stage to discuss atheism! Dr. Gannon states, “The more that science increases the more that faith is inescapable.”
Points for Home:
Paul says this in the book of Romans: “What can be known about God is plain to them – the people in the world – because God has shown it to them.” In other words, once merely has to look around them to know that God exists.
His invisible attributes, divine nature, and Eternal power have been clearly perceived since the beginning of time. He is consistent and science actually proves this!
There is always room for humility. Being the most intelligent person on the planet does not change the fact that God is still God and everyone needs a Savior.
Next week, Mark will conclude his lesson on “Why I am Not an Atheist”. He is going to be looking at websites which claim that God does not exist, so make sure you have an extra tablet or smart phone handy so you can follow along easily.

Day 4
Takeaway from yesterday’s segment on Atheism: Religion can be both destructive and constructive.
Today, Mark moves on to Richard Dawkins and “The God Delusion”. Short background on Dawkins: he is an evolutionist and therefore believes that atheism must be true. Dawkins also has two other arguments in favor of atheism; listen in as Mark explains just how ridiculous they are.
Mark points out that there are some Christians who believe in evolution. “Evolution itself is rather irrelevant to whether or not there is a God,” Mark states. “God can do things however He wants to do them.” Listen in as Mark Lanier uses Genesis 1 and 2 to explain his point.

Day 3
Mark continues to discuss Author and Atheist Sam Harris example in his book about a little boy and his parents. Listen in as Mark reveals three “Logical Fallacies” from Harris’s story.
Religion can definitely be destructive – 9/11 and slavery for example. “People do bad things in the name of religion,” Mark says. We all know that is true. But have you ever thought of this: Atheists do bad things in the name of atheism, too!

Day 2
When a person is an expert in a certain area, they should just stick to what they know, right? Most people follow this rule fairly well. However, it seems as though all the “experts” on Atheism should definitely not venture out of their comfort zone. If they want to appear more intelligent, they just call themselves “agnostic” instead of “atheists”. Mark Lanier calls it “logical fallacies”.
Atheists usually, if not always, use the “burden of proof” excuse to deny the existence of God. Mark discussed this in his first lesson on Atheism a few weeks ago. Today, he moves on to those “logical fallacies” and references “The End of Faith” by Sam Harris, reading a story about a man, a bomb, a couple shopping for a new refrigerator. Listen in as Mark reads the story and explains why it is an “illogical fallacy”.

Day 1
Mark Lanier is back!! A few weeks ago, he began the “Why I Am Not…” Series with Atheism and he picks up there this week with Part 2.
Mark Lanier is a lawyer – a lawyer that also happens to be a Christian. When he discusses matters of faith, he has a pre-disposed bias; he has already decided what he believes. He tries to present his faith as honestly as he can in a fair and balanced fashion.
The burden of proof…”This is what the law says you must do to make your claim,” Mark reminds us. Do atheists have “proof” that God does not exist? Do Christians have “proof” that God does exist?
The court system…”We use the court system because they are the best tool we have for figuring out the truth,” Mark declares. Courts have been around for a long, long, long time and help us every day.
Tune in every day this week to hear more on the burden of proof and the court system and how they connect to atheism and Christianity.

Part 5
Yesterday, Mark Lanier discussed the story “The Dragon in My Garage” in the book “The Demon Haunted World” by Carl Sagan. Today, he expands on this story and Bertrand Russell’s vision of a teapot orbiting around the sun and why using these two assertions to “prove” God doesn’t exist is simply absurd.
“What these people will do is take an illustration that’s not explained fully and tested and they will try to extrapolate it onto the issue of whether or not there is a God,” Mark says. It’s kind of like telling someone to use Fahrenheit to measure the amount of liquid in a cup. You can’t! And therein lies the problem. Listen in as Mark explains this theory.
Points for Home: Romans 1:19-22God says there is evidence of Him in this world, but we have to look for them. You have to understand what you are looking for.
God is invisible, but He is also divine. “He is not a genie in a bottle,” Mark says.
Be careful what you say and what you believe. Some of the smartest people have emotional and spiritual underlying issues, which all boils down to the fact that they need God in their lives.

Part 4
Atheists demand “proof” from Christians to establish the existence of God, yet atheists cannot – and will not – offer any “proof” that God does not exist! Mark Lanier is just dumbfounded as he reveals some of the “proof” that atheists think they have, when all they’ve really done is shift the burden of proof. It’s like a slight-of-hand magic trick. Listen in as he uses an elephant in the room as an example. Yes, an elephant.
Furthermore, Mark doesn’t believe that “scientific proof” is necessary in order to prove that something exists. Science is not the answer for everything. He references author Carl Sagan’s book, “The Demon Haunted World”, as an example. Listen in as he tells the story from the book, “The Dragon in My Garage”.
Tune in tomorrow as Mark explains more about Sagan’s book and the example about the dragon. He may or may not also discuss a teapot in the middle of the galaxy as well.

Part 3
Mark Lanier explains the difference between someone who is an atheist and someone who is agnostic. He uses Greek to describe what each word means, so listen in.Note: He will expand on this more in a few weeks during another class.
Mark also discusses the Four Horsemen of the New Atheism:
Sam Harris “The End of Faith”
Christopher Hitchens “The Portable Atheist”
Richard Dawkins “The God Delusion”
Daniel Bennet “Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon”

Part 2
Evidence is a key motivation behind every good lawyer – if you don’t have good evidence, you don’t have a good case. He says the rules on evidence are based on logic and argumentation theories. It’s not just “cut and dry easy stuff”; there is direct and circumstantial evidence.
Mark has discovered that many authors and supporters of atheism cannot “prove” their claim that there is no God. Mark uses a specific example from a case to explain why “good” evidence is so vital to making or breaking a case.
So, how does all this connect to the topic of this week’s lesson: “Why I Am Not An Atheist”? Mark will explain tomorrow, so make sure you listen in.

Part 1
Mark Lanier is a NEW Grandpa! I just couldn’t cut out his story of the joyous occasion from the lesson. Listen in and share with his joy of being a new grandfather.
Now, on to the new series: “Why I Am Not…” Mark encourages you to visit his class this summer if you are curious about other religions and why they are not reflective of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. If you would like to know what topic Mark will be teaching each week, click [here] to be added to the class email list.
First, Mark wants to let everyone know what he believes and why. It’s not “just because his parents were Christians”. There are specific reasons. It’s also important to realize that Mark’s profession as a trial attorney does not dim or hide his faith in Jesus. In fact, his faith strengthens and enhances how he pursues his career. Listen in as he recalls a situation from his first year in law school and how his faith and career go hand in hand.
Mark doesn’t believe that having a difference of opinion on religious matters should translate into a fist fight. As Mark focuses on “Atheism” this week, there will be many questions you may have which Mark will answer. While atheism is not a “religion” (obviously), many people today are now identifying as atheists. Why? Tune in tomorrow to hear more on how Mark’s career as a lawyer uses evidence to prove that atheists are wrong in their “unbelief” in God.
