Title: The Essentials for Reaching our Potential
Topic: Reaching Your Potential

Part 1 of 5
Today we are sharing Pastor David Fleming’s sermon from Sunday, May
22: “The Essentials for Reaching our Potential”.
The life of Sampson was a rocky one that is for certain, as recounted in Judges Chapters 13 through 16. In this first segment with Pastor Fleming, he recalls how Samson’s parents were told of the importance of their son to the land of Israel through an angel of the Lord. Pastor Fleming goes on to read further in the passage about Samson’s strength and when he first started to mess up. Obviously, we will not be receiving a how-to-guide from Samson on reaching our potential – just do the opposite of what he did and you just might have a chance!
Essential for Potential #1: Remember who you are and live up to it. Samson was born to be special; his life was for a specific purpose. He forgot that purpose, though, and that is why his life spiraled downward. “Samson had a huge gap between who he was and how he behaved,” Pastor Fleming says.

Sometimes there is a gap between our identity and the way we behave.
Have you ever heard anyone say: “That’s just the way I am”? Do you ever
want to say back to that person: “Well, that’s not the way you’re supposed
to be”? Pastor Fleming says, “That gap will keep us from every
recognizing or realizing our potential in Christ.”
Ephesians 4:1 “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life
worthy of the calling you have received.” Pastor Fleming urges everyone to
close the gaps between where you are and where you should be.

Essential for Potential #2: Fix what doesn’t fit. Usually the gap occurs when a Christian doesn’t fix things in their life – or tries to fix things on their own.
Samson was a deeply flawed individual. Pastor Fleming shares some thoughts from another scholar on what Samson was doing wrong. Listen in as he reads from Judges 14 and explains what Samson was doing wrong. (Hint: Samson liked the ladies.)

“Yes, dear” is Samson’s fatal flaw. When Samson fell for Delilah, it was the end of his life. He was unwilling to fix his flaw, therefore the flaw fixed him.
“The razor is something that in spite of your great potential, has great potential to undermine you – to undo you…If we don’t fix our flaws, our flaws will be fatal,” Pastor Fleming warns. It is temptation that you don’t say no to. How many razors do you have laying around, waiting to destroy your life?

Essential for Potential #3: Make God your first option, not your last resort.
Judges 16 shows Samson in prison, with his eyes gouged out and his head shaved. He’s lost everything and is no longer strong and mighty. He is humiliated and made fun of. Listen in as Pastor Fleming reads from Chapter 16, revealing just how bad Samson’s life had become. Only then did Samson cry out to the Lord. It was his second call for help – both times out of desperation.
Remember the third essential? Don’t make God your last resort.
What possibilities could we discover if we didn’t wait until we bottom out before we turn to Him? Have a broken attitude. Keep your eyes toward heaven. Be completely surrendered to God. Everything else will fall into place and you will be living at your full potential.
