Title: Palm Sunday Encouragement
Topic: Palm Sunday

Part 1 of 5

Imagine the atmosphere on Palm Sunday over 2,000 years ago. People were happy; it was a joyful occasion! If only that jubilant feeling still echoed through the halls of every church every Sunday – every day, even!

Pastor Fleming’s Palm Sunday sermon will inspire you and give you hope for the future. In this first segment, he talks about the rodeo (this is Texas, after all), Passover, and the behind the scenes action when Jesus came to town.

Do you know why the people waved palm branches when Jesus entered the city? Pastor Fleming says, “Those palm branches were measures of communication, to inspire courage and passion and fervor in the hearts of the people who were participating in this event.”

John 12, beginning in verse 12, is the Biblical Scripture for this sermon. You can read the passage here.  Listen in to the next four segments as Pastor Fleming discusses events throughout history which paved the way for Jesus to come and be the Savior of the world.

The crowds were shouting “Hosanna! Hosanna!” as Jesus entered the city. Hosanna means “save now”. Jesus had come to save the people! But did they really know what Hosanna meant? The people had specific expectations of what they imagined the King would be. Little did they know, he was the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The One who would save the world! Pastor Fleming uses the term “redeem” to describe this.

Jesus could have begun an armed rebellion right then and there,” Pastor Fleming points out. “He had the numbers; the crowds were for him. He had momentum.” Everyone knew that he could take control and turn the tide in his favor. But he did none of this. He stood there, letting the guards take him to his death. Why would he allow this? Listen in as Pastor Fleming retells the story, emphasizing one detail that many skip over: The Donkey.

“Easter is great reminder to us that the devil, who opposes us, has already been defeated!” declares Pastor Fleming. If Jesus had overthrown the Roman soldiers and taken over the city, what would have been accomplished? Nothing. In fact, Pastor Fleming says, “That would have been a temporary solution to an eternal problem.” Jesus knew the plan; he knew the end result. That is why he did nothing. That is why he died for our sins – for our eternity.

Pastor Fleming digs a little deeper into the story of Palm Sunday and Easter. Listen in as he sites specific passages to show the connection between the life and ministry of Moses and Jesus. (Exodus 3:10)

Biblical references in this segment: Genesis 3:15; Genesis 12; Galatians 3; John 5:46

Jesus is the Tabernacle. Not Moses. Not Jacob. Not Peter. Not Paul. Jesus is the only One. There are many connections from different people throughout the Bible who predicted the birth, life, and death of Jesus. They can’t all be wrong!

Jesus came, not to change the law, but to fulfill the law. “That was the people’s mistake,” Pastor Fleming opines. “They pursued righteousness by works of the law.” It was Jesus who came to separate them from the law as he “lived God’s expectations in perfect obedience.”

When Jesus came into Jerusalem on the tenth day, he was more than just a ruling King. He was more than their understanding. Also, Pastor Fleming points out that it was no mistake that Jesus came on the tenth day, “Lamb Selection Day”. When he rode in on that donkey, Jesus was fulfilling God’s sacrificial requirements. He was to be, forevermore, the one and only Lamb of God. “The Lamb of God, who does not cause the passing over of sin, or the covering of sin, but the removal of sin,” declares Pastor Fleming.

Biblical references in this segment: Duet 18:15; Acts 3; Matthew 5:17; Romans 10:4; Hebrew 4:15; Exodus 12:3-6

God used lambs as the sacrificial symbol for a reason. Lambs are precious, sweet, innocent creatures. For over a thousand years, people chose the most beautiful and spotless lamb they owned to butcher in the Temple to prove their love and devotion to God. It was not a pretty scene. It was gruesome. It smelled of death and blood. “That is what God sees when I sin,” Pastor Fleming reminds us. Imagine a blood stain for every sin you have ever committed. Pretty shameful, isn’t it?

Jesus was innocent and pure and spotless – the only sinless being to ever walk the earth. “Jesus did it all when he paid it all,” Pastor Fleming says. Easter is more than an event or celebration. It is a remembrance. It is in honor of Jesus, the life he lived, and the death he chose.
