Title: Rising Costs of Chronic Diseases
Topic: Chronic Diseases

Part 1 of 2

The cost of healthcare is skyrocketing – and not just for the citizens paying for it. The cost to develop and manufacture new prescription drugs is out of control. A mere ten separate prescription drugs, for example, are expected to cost the Federal Government almost $50 Billion Dollars over the next decade. Why on earth does it cost so much?

The growing problem of chronic diseases, especially in the elderly, is becoming a serious issue. Nearly half of all Americans now suffer from at least one of the ten most common chronic diseases, and they pay five times more for healthcare than those who do not have a chronic illness.

Larry Hausner is the former CEO of the American Diabetes Association  and now serves as the Chief Patient Advocate for Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease.  Larry says, “People don’t understand the cost of medicine today. The higher costs today prevents lower costs down the road.” Larry discusses this dire issue in this segment and also gives some advice on what we can all do to lower the costs for prescription drugs. He will continue this in the next segment, so listen in!

This is even true for children.

A healthier America results in a wealthier America. When we exercise, eat right, and take care of ourselves, we won’t need lengthy hospital stays or medicine that costs a lot of money. Eat your veggies. Eat more fruit. And just say no to salt and fast food.

Listen in as Larry gives some more advice on how to stay healthy and live a fuller life – saving everyone money in the long-run!
